And the 23 enigma (which one may consider as already been mentioned by way of mentioning Illuminatus/Discordianism). It has also been pointed out that every interger can be generated by adding or subtracting 2 and 3, making it either ubiquitous to the fabric of the universe, or a complete coincidence.

The number of humans needed to rebuild Zion after its scheduled destruction by the machines in The Matrix movies is exactly 23.

"every interger can be generated by adding or subtracting 2 and 3, making it either ubiquitous to the fabric of the universe, or a complete coincidence."

It's not a coincidence, but it's not magic either. Obviously if you add and subtract 2's you can generate every even number. If you include 3, ie 2+1, you can generate odd numbers as well.

@Lee M: It's even simpler as that. :D 3 minus 2 equals 1, ergo by adding up (3-2) expressions, you can produce any number dividable by 1 from zero to plus infinity. By adding up (2-3) you produce any integer between zero and minus infinity...

    How is this a trope?

The same way One Hundred And Eight is a trope.

This should be obvious, but just for the record: you can "generate every integer" by adding/subtracting any two sequential integers by virtue of the definition of sequential integers (the mechanics are explained in Koveras' argument above). Namely, two integers are sequential if the magnitude of the difference between them is exactly 1. That is not unique to 2 and 3.

This trope is going to have a very very large Troper Tales section...

Oh, did anyone explain why any integer can be generated out of 2 and 3 already? ^^

23 pops up in Gorillaz media a lot and there's even a big mention of it in the book.

Weird Al spoofs this by including the number 27 in a lot of his songs.

The world where the new crisis in Magical Chronicle Lyrical Nanoha Force kicks off is designated by TSAB "the administrated planet #23". Coincidence?
