How Did We Miss This?

The moon. Of the two celestial bodies most visible from earth, it is the lesser. Its light is a pale reflection. It stands watch over the night when most people and domestic animals are asleep. Is it any wonder that, when personified, the moon is often depicted as sad and lonely?

Truly Older Than Dirt, this has been in myths for as long as humans have told stories.

  • The story of Selene from Greek myth, the moon goddess who falls in love with a mortal and ensures he stas asleep forever so she can love him without him ever nowing it's not just a dream.
  • In X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Silver Fox recounts a (possible made up) story about "why the moon is lonely."
  • In Avatar: The Last Airbender, Sokka's first girlfriend turned into the moon. That's rough, buddy.
  • Her crushing loneliness was the catalyst for Princess Luna's Face–Heel Turn in My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.

    • Chikane Himemiya from Kannazuki No Miko is strongly associated with the moon and is one of the loneliest and (purposefully) misunderstood characters in the series.

    Tabletop Games
    • Dungeons And Dragons Forgotten Realms supplement Faiths & Avatars. The moon goddess Selune often seems saddened by events millennia old, such as her eternal battles with her fellow goddess Shar.

Is this related to Melancholy Moon?
  • October 29, 2011
Definately related. Though it's when the moon ITSELF is melancholy instead of merely being symbolic.

I thought the catalyst for Luna's Face Heel Turn was jealousy/resentment?

That too, as well as some as yet unknown outside force. There's a lot that went into making her Nightmare Moon, I'm just focusing on that aspect for the page and given her portrayal in Luna Eclipsed. "They have never liked us, and they never shall," in particular.

In The Silmarillion, the Moon's orbit is out of pace with the Sun's because the Maia carrying it is attracted to the Sun and keeps trying to draw closer.

Not sure how lonely she was, but the sentient Moon from Satyrday is certainly sad enough, what with having been kidnapped by an evil owl and all.

In the Sesame Street song "I Don't Want to Live on the Moon", Ernie sings about how he'd like to visit the moon, but he'd eventually get lonely and want to go home.
