Do We Need This? Do We Have This One?? Needs a Better Title? Up for Grabs Alternative title: "Like A Hot Knife Through Butter".

Flaming Sword is a sword with...you know...flames. But it's more of a fantasy concept really, since if there is flame there is combustion and that would waste a lot of fuel for relatively low temperature effect. Enter the Hot Blade for your more sci-fi oriented fictions out there. It's a blade that is heated red-hot that gives us all the Power Glows goodness with an added touch of Kill It with Fire and quite a rational explanation of why it is deadlier than just a regular blade. An alternative or a variant of the Absurdly Sharp Blade, that cuts better not for it's sharpness but because of it's temperature.

Needs More Examples:

Examples

Anime and Manga
  • The Zaku's heat tomahawk, the Gouf' heat sword and heat rod, and the Dom/Rick Dom's heat saber from Mobile Suit Gundam.
  • Guts from Berserk used this once against a giant water snake.

Film
  • Optimus Prime from the Transformers movies uses some of these to cut Decepticon's heads clean off.
  • The Golder Army from the second Hellboy film had two of this, one on each arm.

Tabletop Games
  • Many Warhammer swords (at least in the way they are visually depicted), both Warhammer Fantasy (Archaon) and Warhammer40000 (THE GOD-EMPEROR OF MANKIND), even when some flames might flicker depending on the artist, verging into Flaming Sword territory.
  • Mutant Chronicles.
  • Call of Cthulhu supplement Cthulhu Companion, adventure "Valley of the Four Shrines". The East shrine is dedicated to Cthugha, a deity made of fire. A sword found in a secret room can be made to glow yellow-hot, which will do damage to creatures vulnerable to fire.

Video Games
  • The Heated Cosmic Knife from the Dead Money expansion of Fallout: New Vegas is this. It's an indestructible Absurdly Sharp Blade that has been heated with a heating pad and apparently retains its heat for a ridiculous amount of time, giving it even more destroying power.
  • One of the bosses from Chrono Cross uses a Steampunk version (a Nigh Invulnerable, Humongous Mecha), but this is technically a fantasy setting.
