Physical Attraction Is Shallow

Outer beauty wrong to desire, no matter where on that person's

Name Space:
Page Type:
Physical attraction should ALWAYS be ignored and reviled. If a man likes the cheerleader or a woman likes the jock, they are either a jerkass are have a life lesson on the way.

If a work does not depict Beauty Is Bad than it is in danger of being considered Reality Is Unrealistic.

Humans seems to be required to ignore their physical desires and pursue the oily pimple covered nerd over the quarterback with the great hair and flirt with the heavy girl in the corner over the blue eyed red haired cheerleader.

Remember, if you are looking for more than a quick fling than you are much more likely to find it arms of the chubby flag girl and the chess club captain than in the arms of the pretty boy actor or the the swimsuit model.

Note: This tropes in NOT about the attractiveness of the person, but the attraction TOWARDS that person and how that attraction is regarded by others.

If you are looking for tropes about what beauty means see some of the following:

Beauty Is Bad, True Beauty Is on the Inside, Beauty Equals Goodness, or Evil Is Sexy.

Anime and Manga

Naruto - Many fans hate Sakura for this reason when it comes to her infatuation for Sasuke over Naruto. (and sorta Rock Lee)

Shallow Hal - Built on this trope.

Harry Potter - The boys, particularly Ron, that are attracted to Fluer Delacour is treated this way by many of the other girls when she is visiting Hogwarts.
  • The girls get this treatment from the boys when they show attraction towards Cedric Diggory.

Live-Action TV

Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Xander get's this treatment, both by fans and by his friends, for dating Cordelia.
  • He also treats Buffy like this for her dating Angel, though that is also influenced by Angel being a vampire.

Western Animation

Family Guy - Brian feels this way, and receives lectures for it (Quagmire's infamous rant) because of how he dates only pretty girls.

(I am sick at the moment and cannot get examples off the tip of my tongue, but I will list them tomorrow if I am able, and welcome others to list some of their examples)

BTW, I added all those tags, I want people to tell me if they think any of these apply. But I want THOUGHT put into it before. I will not dismiss this because people see a similarity in it and say for example True Beauty Is On The Inside.

It is not T.B.I.O.T.I. is about the attractiveness of a person and their personality, while P.A.I.S. (my submission) is about the attraction itself and how people treat the person that feels that attraction

So you're talking about an in-universe reaction where Bob lists the things he likes about Alice, "she's hot" is #4 on a list of eight, and Carol castigates him for mentioning Alice's appearance at all, is that a correct assessment?

Tags can only be removed by mods. Think about that next time you dump a bunch of tags onto a YKTTW because you want the people responding to it to tell you if they apply.

Ok, then I will do it anyway. Tags don't stop a launch.

We don't need a list of every examples you can think of but it would be helpful to have one good examples that says how it applies. Is the character treated as shallow in the story for the physical attraction? Does the person not care about the love interest at all beyond being attracted?

Shallow Hal is built on this trope.

Got some examples up there now.

Shallow Hal is built on this trope is a perfect examples of a Zero Context Example. The examples that have context make it sound like we're talking about jealously. He "is treated this way isn't," isn't telling us specifically telling us what this is about. What is said? What happens to tell us this?

It's not that complicated. It's when being attracted to another person because of physical attributes is treated negatively by others, being called shallow.
