Helicopter pilots will always die if they attempt to save the protagonist(s) during a scene where they are overwhelmed.
Let's say that the main characters are fighting off overpowering odds, such as, say, a horde of zombies, and while they're doing well, they can't last forever. A helicopter is called in with a legitimate pilot who has, until now, been previously unheard of, but is immediately likable. If the pilot assists the main characters in any way besides simply extracting them, such as opening fire on the enemy, eventually the chopper will inexplicably be shot down, or the pilot will exit the chopper and sacrifice himself while covering the protagonists, willingly or unwillingly. Resident Evil 4 and 5 provide examples of this trope.
