Foaming At The Mouth

When due to anger or disease someone starts creating foam from their mouth.

Name Space:

Page Type:
Trope
Need some info about real life circumstances of this trope. Side effect of rabies.

It can also be used to show cyanide poisoning but this is a case of Didnt Do The Research.

See also Fake Rabies, where someone with soap or cream in their mouth is mistaken for this and Phlegmings.

Anger Examples

  • On the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "SpongeBob, Sandy and the Worm", Mr. Krabs foams at the mouth at the thought of having to pay Sandy for capturing the Alaskan Bullworm. "I'd rather have that worm come in here and eat you all alive!" Cue the awkward looks.

An anger example would be the unnamed berserker early in Belgarath The Sorcerer. The she-wolf who was accompanying Belgarath (and who will later become Poledra) assumed the berserker was rabid.

I've seen this in manga: someone has a foam coming from their mouth and faints. Usually comedic in nature. They are so angry/shocked they can't help themselves.

Railfans are sometimes called foamers, in other words they foam at the mouth out of excitement when they see rail equipment.

Also sometimes used as a visual shorthand indicating someone's been poisoned. This happens to the hit man in the Watchmen film when he expires from a cyanide capsule, even though it's not actually a symptom of cyanide poisoning.

In the Music Video for Twisted Sister's "Were Not Gonna Take It" the father starts foaming at the mouth as he berates his son, before Twisted sister shows up.

Boogeyman randomly foams at the mouth. Most likely to happen during his entrance if he is not carrying worms in there.
