Annoying Meme Song

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:

Internet Trope.

Upon watching a meme video, the accompanying song drills into your ear and is stuck in your head for a while. That's bad or good, depending on your tastes.

  • Numa Numa.
  • Ivvaan Pollka [sic]
  • Caramelldansen
  • Cotton Eye Joe [less known.]
  • Bananaphone
  • We Interrupt This Programme [NEDM...]
  • Miracle [Gravity Cat]

Any others?

Also known as earworms outside the net. Example: Way to many commercial jingles. More Specific: The Kit Kat theme... oh the Kit Kat theme.

Related in a way: In the Haruhi drama CD Sound Around, Haruhi creates a melody that is put on infinite loop to whoever hears it. Kyon and others end up battling a literal sound worm.

It's "Ievan Polkka" (the video's mistitled), part of which was used for the original Leekspin clip. I like this version, myself.

    Also, Nyanroll, and Serenade.

Well, it is annoying (after a while), a meme (like this one), and even a song.

Never Gonna Give You Up qualifies, people rickroll themselves just for the song.

Pretty much any and all 80's cartoon intros ever.

I still have that goddamn Filmation Ghostbusters song in my head.

Lampshaded with "annoying" by Jonti Picking (aka Weebl, aka the guy who did the Badgers flash), which has an annoyingly catchy tune about an annoyingly catchy tune:
Oh my word, this tune is annoying,
Yes I know, it's really annoying
I can't get this song out of my head!
Make it stop, this tune is annoying
I gotta go to work in the morning
Now I'm gonna be humming it in my bed!

We had a more general trope proposed here as Ear Worms for all songs that invade one's brain. Did that ever get launched?

Ear Worms sounds good. T His happens to me with non-internet songs as well, but some of these are just...gah!

I'm all over an Ear Worms trope.

Here's an especially vicious one. You're welcome.

Let's not confuse this with Stupid Statement Dance Mix, now.

    Also, the Hampster [sic] Dance.

Man, is anything sexier than a anime girl spinning celery while singing finnish polka? Yeah, baby, spin that celery...

Also, The All Your Base Are Belong To Us music. I think that one ties with the Hampster Dance in age... one of them was the first.

    Flea Market Montgomery.
  • Other songs that are notorious for getting stuck in people's heads, though not all internet-y...:

    • Low. Ride. Er. Wah wah wah wah wah wah wah waaaah!
    • Naaaaaa nah nah nanana nah na na Katamari Damashiiiii!
    • This is the song that never ends...
    • Zip-a-dee-do-dah, zip-a-dee-aye! My oh my what a wonderful day...

    • "I see things, I see them with my eyes..."
    • Wakka Laka is probably like this. I've only seen the version with Osaka once, and it surfaces every once in a while.

Otherwise, I should probably stay out of this. I get bad cases of earworm too easily. Pretty much anything I listen to could qualify as one of my earworms at one time or another (not counting while I'm listening to it).

Oh no, tvtropes is gonna Rickroll me now? Is no website safe??

@Nyperold, listening to a song is how I get it out of earworm mode. Usually.

@Seanette: Really? I find humming the Badger song works for everything, and it's faster. (Except, obviously, the Badger song. I don't know what I hum for that.)

    • Queen's We Will Rock You

    • Barry Manilow's Copacabana

    • The Jeopardy music.

    • Feliz Navidad. This troper can attest that she had this in her head for six months straight.

@Air Of Mystery, it usually works, but is not 100%.

Would some kind person define "rickroll"?

    See here.

    Also, Kreibeniki (the Tetris theme).

"Rickroll": a misleadingly-described link that takes you to a video of Rick Astley singing "Never Gonna Give You Up" instead of what you think it's going to be. Variants have also been spotted in the wild; a popular lyrics site Rickrolled people for April Fool's Day, sending the first inquiry from any given person to the lyrics for "Never Gonna Give You Up" instead. Perhaps this should get its own trope?

The Earworm title appears to have been launched, but is blank. If no one else wants to do the base description, I will.

The title is biased. Generally, tropes should not be insults. The title should be shortened to Meme Song.

  • I think that Crowning Music Of Awesome can still be head-catchy. That might even be part of the awesome. This is a Subjective Trope, after all..
