Knight of Cerberus

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:
Trope
Reboot of old topic.

Basically, a villain in a formerly light or comedic series who is played completely straight, in order to display a mood shift toward the dramatic. He may Kick the Dog or Rape The Dog in order to show he means buisiness. In webcomics, this may be a symptom of Cerberus Syndrome (not sure if that topic survived either)

Typically the Big Bad or The Dragon of a series.

Examples:

Legato from Trigun.

Not to worry, it's spelled Cerebus and both topics survived.

Lockhart in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" after he get ahold on Ron's wand. ("Say goodbye to your memories!")

Miko in Order Of The Stick. This troper believes it contributed to the controversy over her character.

Damien from El Goonish Shive was such an example that he was killed off by the author (not in a fourth wall breaking way) to reverse it as he didn't like the direction it was heading. It seems to have worked, No Ontological Inertia indeed.

Megabyte in Re Boot got WAY more serious after season 2, to the point that anyone who saw a later episode first would never believe (as in, I Am Not Making This Up) that he gave Enzo a guitar in season 1.

@ Unknown Troper: I would hardly call Harry Potter a "light or comedic series".
