I'd tell you to link to Neocon Newscaster since this is a trait of that character type, but we're in the process of renaming it. I'll get back to you later.

Well, there's Patriotism and there's Nationalism. Patriotism is loving one's country, where Nationalism is seeing one's country as better than others (there might be other semantics but that's the laconic version). Usually Patriotism is seen as good and Nationalism as bad.

There would have to be a balancing Patriotism is Good trope if this trope exists.

Is this any different from Democracy Is Bad?

@ Dennis Dunjinman Actually patriotism is the love of ones country while nationalism is the love of ones cultural group. And yes I made a YKTTW called Patriotism is Good.

@ Lexicon It's possible to be patriotic towards a country that isn't a democracy.

Well you should mention how Democracy Is Bad is connected to this in the description. Do you have any examples?

The jingoistic Colonel Flag from MASH is one example.

I presume lexicon is referring to the way the U.S. and other western countries have a tendency to equate patriotism with a belief in democracy. Countries like to do that with the ideology espoused by the government. Being patriotic under a monarchy means believing in the divine right of kings. Being patriotic in the Soviet Union meant believing in communist ideology.

But what's the point of this trope? If it's about depicting negative examples of patriotism, then isn't it covered by Patriotic Fervor and My Country Right Or Wrong?

@ Random888 Perhaps your right. Maybe I should just make a heavy edit to the Patriotic Fervor page splitting the types into Patriotism is good and patriotism is bad.

As I also stated in the Patriotism Is Good YKTTW:

"Patriotism" has come to be a kind of loaded term, and also a term people are going to disagree on the meaning of. Some will take it to mean never questioning or disagreeing with the actions of one's country or its government (especially so in time of war); while others will take the view that a true patriot can care enough about one's country to actually question it or its government's actions critically, for the sake of the betterment of their country. (I tend to take the latter view.) And then of course, among patriots who allow for such questioning, what or who (or which party) is questioned is often dependent on what values the "patriot" thinks are "patriotic values"--which of course will happen to coincide with their political worldviews.

As such, the term is almost meaningless--more often used as a term to "righteously" distinguish one or an "us" from a "them", than to express a sincere love of country which maybe both have.
