Mouth Of A Cave

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:
Trope

A cave's opening that is a literal mouth or looks like one. Both a Visual Pun and Exactly What It Says on the Tin. Do We Have This One?? I'm blanking on examples but here's some to start:

  • In Aladdin, the cave shaped like a lion (I think it was a lion)'s opening is a big mouth with sharp teeth.
  • In Spongebob Squarepants, Sandy goes into what she thinks is a big pink cave and punches out what she thinks is the Alaskin Bull Worm. She had actually walked straight into its mouth and beat up its tongue.

    • The Aladdin example, the Cave of Wonders was a panther, if memory serves.
    • And how many islands have caves in the mouth of a mountain that looks like a big skull?

In both Mighty Max and The Tenth Kingdom the cave entrance is not just a dragon's head, it's an actual dragon's head.

In Disney's The Little Mermaid, the front door of Ursula's lair is the mouth of a sea-dragon. Does that one count as a cave?

Also, in Fantastic Voyage Plots it often shows up that the mouth is like entering a big dark cave. ???

I think The Little Mermaid example counts.

There's at least one real life example floating around; a chamber in Virginia's Luray Caverns has an entrance like this, for example.

IIRC in the Fantastic Voyage Plot "inside Ralphie's body" it was like a cave. One of them. ...

...or was that an episode of Dragon Tales?

You might consider the image link below for a page image? Mouth Of A Cave is fine -- or perhaps simply Cave Mouth for the title?

    • In Erfworld, the entrance to the caves leading to Gobwin Knob has a sinister resemblance to a mouth [1].

In The Light Fantastic Twoflower's kidnappers inadvertantly settle in the mouth of an enormous troll, mistaking it for a cave. They probably would have been fine if they hadn't lit a fire inside it, ironically to ward off trolls.
