Holding One's Ground

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:
Trope
I had this before as "I Will Not Flee", but it didn't go so well, but I want to try again.

A move or ability that prevents the user from being switched out.

The inverse of You Will Not Evade Me.

Examples:

Video Games
  • Pokémon:
    • The ability Suctions Cups
    • The move Ingrain, in addition to restoring HP at the end of every turn, roots the user to the ground, preventing the opponent from switching the user out. Unfortunately, it also prevents the user from switching out itself.

Real Life
  • Stalin's "Not One Step Backwards!" order to the Red Army at Stalingrad - which worked; and Hitler's "last man, last bullet, no retreat!" order to his Army - which dismally failed.

The title Hold Your Position sounds like a line of dialog and is forbidden under No New Stock Phrases.

It's also likely to be confused with a military order to "hold your current position".

    Cant Be Switched Out?

    Unswitchable?

    Zulu
    • Lt. Chard (Michael Caine)'s ineffectual bleating of "hold them, hold them!" as his command faces being overwhelmed at Rorke's Drift: Stanley Baker's character, Lieutenant Bromhead, returning from being treated for a slight wound, sees the problem straight away. (The British soldiers are being grappled at close quarters by Zulus and thus cannot reload their single-shot rifles).
Bromhead summons his few reserves, has the men form ranks, and uses disciplined volley fire - the British strength - to drive off the attack, force the enemy out of close quarter fighting, and drives the Zulus out of the British perimeter.
Front rank - fire! Rear rank - advance! Front rank - fire! Rear rank - reload!

I did confuse it with the military command, and immediately thought of the "Zulu" film example! Maybe this YKTTW example can encompass this?

Another Real World example would be Stalin's "Not One Step Backwards!" order to the Red Army at Stalingrad - which worked; and Hitler's "last man, last bullet, no retreat!" order to his Army - which dismally failed.

If there aren't a lot of examples, they could just go under Switch Out Move as Defied.

^ I guess the mechanic of not out-switchable should go there, then.
