Cavemen were huge

Up For Grabs. When a cave man is depicted (especially if it's a character being subject to a "de-evolution ray") they will invariably be the Big Guy, having more muscles and stature than their contemporary descendants (along with lots of hair and a sloping brow, of course).

I know only cursory anthropology, but this is Did Not Do The Research. Our ancestors were much smaller than us, partly due to diet and partly due to genetics.

Occasionally, they are only shown having some Super Strength or being savage fighters, which isn't quite so preposterous.

This perhaps means that they based the caveman, rather than off Cro-Magnon humans, off the Neanderthals.

Averted in Earths Children series. Ayla is notably taller than any of the Clan (Neanderthals).

Joe(?) the neanderthal man and friend of Mark Twain in Philip Jose Farmer's Riverworld.

Joe was actually a Gigantopithecus, and thus justified as huge.

@somerandomdude, that would explain the strength, but I think neanderthals were still a little shorter then modern-day humans.

In Real Life, trolls may have been based on folk memory or skeletons of short, stout Neandertals. Then again, we seem to be wired to believe in Elves Vs Dwarves, whether it's aliens, foriegners, or what-have-you.

Real Life. It was either they were tall and able to run your ass down a million times over, or short, stout, and willing to bash your head.

In the original Star Trek series episode The Galileo Seven, there was an episode where there were giant alien cavemen threatening a shuttlecraft.

Possible subtrope: a mild version of this simply a result of the fact the easiest way to depict a caveman on Live Action TV is to add brow ridges, fake hair, animal skin clothing, etc., to an actor, so the resulting Rubber Forehead Alien will be slightly larger than a human, and largish actors are often cast in the part.

Real Life: Homo heidelbergensis 'was tall, 1.8 m (6 ft) on average, and more muscular than modern humans.'
