A variation on Oh Crap
, and available to all characters, not just villains. This is when the character realizes he's screwed, but groans instead of gasping. This is followed with the lucky character just lowering their head and bulling through the punishment (or bending over and taking it, if they're really screwed). If they come out on top, the result is nearly always a Crowning Moment of Awesome
, but this trope specifically refers to the "Oh, great" reaction before the pain begins. Best illustrated if I describe the Trope Namer
- Blade of Tyshalle, by Matthew Woodring Stover. The main character, Hari, is a paraplegic. Hari has been trapped in a burning building due to an assassination attempt. His 200-lb. companion has been knocked unconscious and must be dragged along, the air is full of dust and smoke making it hard to breath, his wheelchair is unavailable and before he can find an exit he has to bypass several stories of staircase anyways. "This, thought Hari, is gonna suck."
- Don't worry though, he does make it out. He in fact could have left his companion (an old, hated rival) in the building for dead, but rescued the man instead just to prove that he could. Serious Crowning Moment of Awesome material in the end.
I can't think of any other examples right now, though, so this may not be a trope quite yet.
