This is a Spoiler Trope, so be warned. Spoilers abound.

Sometimes, a work is so well-known, everyone knows what the big secret is already. So, sometimes the big surprise will be changed, subverted or simply removed to shock people well-versed in the work.

Examples:

  • Tom Savini's remake of Night of the Living Dead changed some of the famous elements, such as the opening bum actually being just a bum, while Barbara survives but Ben is zombified.
  • Tim Burton's remake of Planet of the Apes had a completely non-sequitur ending with an Ape Lincoln instead of the "Damn you all to hell!" Statue of Liberty scene.
  • The Deadly Bees. Hargrove was a villain in the book.
