Hates All Vegans

A character that shows nothing but disdain for vegetarians and vegans

Name Space:
Page Type:
A somewhat common occurrence in media from the 40's and 50's, this trope is invoked when a character is presented with the topic of vegetarianism, and is disgusted or mortified.

The character may say something like "Who Could Eat That?" or start ranting about how vegetarians kill the world.

A minor point: I believe that the spelling should be "vegan".

Related to Evil Vegetarian, which is about vegetarians who are evil.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World (Comics, Movie, and Game) gives us Todd Ingram, a vegan with psychic powers (It Makes Sense In Context), who is one of Ramona's Seven Evil Ex's. However, slightly subverted in that not all Vegans are evil, as there is a Vegan Police which strips Todd of his Psychic powers when he consumes Gelato, Chicken Parmesan, and Coffee with half-and-half creamer in it.

Since this trope is about characters who think vegetarians are evil, and we already have Evil Vegetarian, you should change the title to reflect that. Perhaps Does Not Live Vegans.

[up][up] That is not invoking this trope. The trope would be invoked if Ramona or Scott hated ALL vegans. Since Todd IS evil, that makes it Evil Vegetarian.

Is This Tropable, cuz it doesn't seem very tropable to me.

Ted Nugent had some nasty comments about PETA and vegetarians when he appeared on Penn And Teller Bullshit.

Regardless of my personal experience as a Veggie,It doesn't seem to actually happen often in fiction. If vegetarianism is brought up at all in a work, it's either a lightly touched upon character trait or something purported.

didn't Bob The Angry Flower reciprocate feelings of those plant-haters? Can't remember for sure. =)

This looks like Complaining About Vegan-Haters You Don't Like. In other words, not a good idea.

Maybe this trope could be broadened by including people who don't understand veganism/vegetarianism? Like, negative reactions other than outright hatred, such as confusion? I kind of get where this trope idea is coming from but I think most people who hate vegetarians actually hate the hippie/Granola Girl kind of culture that vegetarianism is associated.

e.g. on Gavin And Stacey Pam gets so anxious that any of her in-laws might be vegetarians that she buys veggie sausages when they come over for dinner. When none of them turn out to be vegetarian, she claims that the sausages are hers to avoid embarrassment and has to keep the lie up for an awkwardly long time.

There was also an episode of Sex And The City where the main characters went to a vegan raw food restaurant and made jokes about how awful the food was.

I don't know if this helps, just some ideas.

Lance Blastoff, from Frank Miller's Tales to Offend comic, has complete comtempt for all vegetarians. Of course, he's intended as a spoof of over-the-top macho attitudes.

Gav from Nukees hates hippies, vegans, and the like. Loudly.

Would it be helpful to line up this trope as an opposing counterpart to Straw Vegetarian, and call it something like Straw Carnivore, Straw Meat-Eater, or Straw Anti-Vegetarian? "Hates All Vegans" would just be one stereotypical trait of such a character. Just a thought.

    ^That could work.

Also, since this has been lying fallow since last March, I'm marking it as Up For Grabs.

    Possible page quote:
"How can I trust a man who won't eat a good old-fashioned American hot dog?"
-- Sgt. Hondo Harrelson, SWAT movie

    • In SWAT, Hondo rejects a SWAT applicant partly because he ordered a soy dog from a hot dog stand.

So... what's this supposed to MEAN?

Is it supposed to be about how vegans are Acceptable Targets? Or does it paint the character as ignorant for not liking them? Without this information this is just People Sit On Chairs.
