Void of Despair

Depressed anime character falls into darkness (metaphorically).

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:
Trope
Do We Have This? This is an Anime Trope. Sometimes, if an anime character becomes extremely depressed, the background will fade to a very gloomy black and the character will appear to sink into the infinite Void of Despair. This tends to happen when someone points out a particular physical trait that the character in question is not proud of; or an emotional trauma occurs in the Love Triangle.

There is often a follow-up shot using Corner of Woe and/or Color Failure, demonstrating the character did not fall into a literal Void.

Needs More Examples! Needs a Better Description. Up for Grabs.

I think is tropable and I don't believe (IIRC) that we have this one. Jeez, this happens too many times in anime. Unfortunately, nothing is coming to mind at the moment.

A non-anime example might be in the scene in Sirkkas home (from 3:10 and about one more minute) in The Adventures of Picasso.

Well we have Corner Of Woe which is either the same as this or closely related.

Agree, though I think there is a separate trope here. Maybe this should be limited to the presentation aspect?

Ie, when the difference in mood for a character or situation is reflected and reinforced by visual or auditory story-telling means? My example (Sirkkas home) is one. Sudden dramatic lightning or cloudy skies appearing/disappearing is another. Getting a small raincloud over the character. And so on.

Edit: we have those: Empathic Environment, Mood Lighting. Scratch my example and proposals.

Honestly, just because it has the word "Despair" in it, it's too similar to another trope name? By that logic, isn't Despair Event Horizon way too similar to Moral Event Horizon?

(We aren't going to watch a 20 minute episode just to find your example, give a time stamp.) Most examples I remember from Ouran are Corner Of Woe, with Tamaki in a dark corner growing mushrooms.

I recall a variation where a character falls out of sight into a field of darkness, sometimes vanishing with a twinkle. But I can't bring up any specific examples.

^^^^ No, because "dark void" paired with "despair" does this.

Noir Grimoir, the timestamp is in the URL. It should take you to the proper spot when you click the link (1:40 for the Azumanga clip, 9:25 for the Ouran clip)

Huh, doesn't for me. Maybe because I'm running Firefox 4.0 beta. (That's a weird one, lightning? Where did that come from?)

That Ouran example is a combination of this trope and Thunder Shock.

In the Ouran link, I think the fact that there's an ad before the video breaks the timestamp url. It's happened to me before, and I'm running ol' IE.
