Inconsequential Incompetence

Let's check on Jar-Jar, how's he doing? Oh, his bumbling idiocy is actually an advantage! He only accidentally kills enemies, never allies. Good, I'm glad to see that's all working out.

Do We Have This One?... oh, and I am open to title suggestions.

This is when a character is presented as severely incompetent for comedic rather than dramatic purposes, and in turn the incompetence tends not to cause severe problems, as a way to avoid Mood Whiplash.

See also Accidental Aiming Skills and Improbable Aiming Skills for when incompetence with a weapon works out for the better.

Sounds like "The Rule of Funny." (As for Jar-Jar, however, Palpatine had planned to make him a Senator as part of his plot, so it was a sort of "contractual invulnerability").

Peter Grant, protagonist of Rivers Of London, actually isn't a terribly good policeman (at least with regular policework), since amongst other things he was too busy reading some interesting graffiti on a statue when his colleagues were trying to control a drunken crowd. it doesn't hold him back as a supernatural investigator though.

So like Crazy Awesome, only with incompetence instead of craziness?

    • Inspector Clouseau (Peter Sellers) in the Pink Panther series. His clumsiness and incompetence usually didn't have any lasting bad effects and sometimes ended up helping him.
