My Underwear Grows On Me

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:
Trope
In a game where you can change clothes, you and others will always wear something that cannot be removed and isn't represented by an item in your inventory. Examples include:
  • Too many to count games where men are stuck in generic white underpants and women are stuck in generic white bikini
  • In Fallout I and II protagonist wear iconic blue jumpsuit with number 13 on it.
  • In Gothic you wear some sort of rags unless you wear something else. Oddly, NPC do wear aforementioned underpants and bikini
  • With the help of mod you can avert this in The Elders Scrolls

    Fable. All three of them.

Do we want to include "you can't take off pants (and shirts if you're female), only replace them" in this?

Probably not as it something completely different. We talking about something that grows on your skip, apparently.

You can walk around flashing your privates? Seriously? That's cool

As I recall, in first Neverwinter Nights when that drow assassin chick from Underdark was in your party as a temporal member, she would revert to her default armor. Once joining permanently she would go around in a sort of two-part black swimsuit. Aribeth and Deekin, too, have a default outfit instead of underpants.

    • Enforced hard with the Create A Soul system on Soul Calibur IV. Even if you design a character who has skin clearly visible, if their armor is broken, underwear will spontaneously appear on them.

Dragon Quest IX has this as well. The "naked" outfit is actually significantly more than the usual unremoveable underwear, to the point where you can equip many, many items that show more skin than if you hadn't equipped anything.

The reason why should be obvious: Ratings. IMHO, I think this is already covered by Virtual Paper Doll and not splittable.

Due to Moral Guardians and Media Watchdog this is normal for games.

    • In Ever Quest when you died you would wind up at your bind point "naked", which would really be wearing skimpy underwear that a starting character begins with, no armor. However, later on they changed it so your armor and items always stay with you. Of course, you still start out with only a newbie tunic and can remove your armor and walk around in your underwear if you wish.

As for titles, perhaps Unremovable Underclothes.

Those two words make for quite the oxymoron.

Star Wars Galaxies certainly had this for all characters.

@Stratadrake yeah thats why I come up with it. Short and sweet and funny. As bonus, its fairly clear on what trope is.

    • The game Everquest, everyones starts out with rags.

    Generality
    • Guild Wars does this. In public areas you'll typically see a handful of people dancing in their underwear.
