The Pedophile

An adult sexually attracted to children.

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:
Trope
A pedophile is a person who is sexually attracted to children.

The term "pedophile" generally refers to someone attracted to younger children while people attracted to pre-teens or teenagers are generally called "pederasts." However, the line between the two words becomes blurred in common usage.

The pedophile will often be a villain and the target of a Pedo Hunt. They might also be a Pedophile Priest. Some works will reveal that the Pedophile was a victim of Pedophilia as a child.

Do We Have This One?? I know we have Lolicon, but that refers to a specific genre rather than pedophiles in general. We have pages for the act of hunting pedophiles and pedophiles with a particular occupation but we don't have one for general pedophiles.

This one may need a 'No Real Life Examples Please' but IDK for sure. I can imagine RL examples might start flames.

This one may need No Examples Period.

Yeah. Once this gets launched, then we can ask Fast Eddie to edit the page on Lolicon to make it about the genre (and still with no examples) than about pedophile characters attracted to little girls.

Stuff I can name off the top of my head:
    • Humbert Humbert from Lolita is a definite example.
    • Jack Woltz from The Godfather is revealed to be one in the novel, and his molestation of a Shirley Temple-like child visiting him for an audition during Tom Hagen's visit was one of the factors that led to the horse-head incident.
    • Donovan from Berserk and the pederast lord that Griffith had to sleep with.
    • Boss Matsumoto from Kill Bill, which allowed eleven-year-old O-Ren Ishii to get close enough to take revenge for her family on him.
    • Quite a few villains from Law And Order Special Victims Unit. Elliot Stabler in particular has this as his Berserk Button.
    • Noah Cross from Chinatown, who fathered a daughter upon his own daughter.
    • The title character of the Sin City story "That Yellow Bastard," a Serial Killer who raped little girls and slashed them to ribbons and loved to hear them scream, but was protected by his equally evil US Senator father from being brought to justice.

If you don't want examples at all, I'll understand.

"Pederest" isn't the correct term. That's a subtype of pedophiles.

Pedophiles are interested in pre-pubescent children (typically up to age 10).

Hebephilia is attraction to pubescent children (roughly 11-14).

Ephebophilia is attraction to mid-to-late adolescents (15-19)

Humbert Humbert is not a good example, although he can skate in under some generous definitions. He's a hebephile.

Is this actually a trope? It might be better to just have a Useful Notes page on pedophelia.

Considering they've disallowed the "lolita" trope - both the character type and the book/film - I seriously doubt this trope will fly either, as long as the site is being censored in that manner.

They disallowed the "Lolita" book. (!)

We have Evil Pedophile (or did; it was evidently cut).

^^ As I understand it, Lolita the book is probably coming back, once they've built a committee to decide what really is too creepy.

^ I remember a comment about cub scouts or something that would make Herbert a two-fer hebephile.

Having an entry on someone being a pedophile is not a trope. It would be a trope if it had any narrative significance. A pedophile being evil and a villain is covered by Pedo Hunt. Lolicon covers a different portrayal of pedophiles. This YKTTW doesn't really cover anything tropeworthy as it stands.

^Paedo Hunt looks more like the reaction to a paedophile than like a paedophile itself, though. That one prolly needs a TRS trip.

Either way, if this is launched it will need a page lock - the lolicon TRS thread mentioned that we can't allow such pages to be open for public editing.

Yes, Paedo Hunt is about the reaction to a pedophile, and is a (sub)plot/narrative-type trope rather than a character type.

With all the random cuts going on, I don't think Fast Eddie is gonna let this one slip past the censors.

I think that this could become Evil Paedophile or Paedophile Villain here. Also, I've found this old YKTTW for a paedophile trope.

Given the current policy situation, what does everyone think of, if/when this gets launched, getting a mod to lock it straight away? It might be needed to prevent creepiness before it happens.

EDIT: Okay, somehow I missed that Septimus had already said this.

I think this does have a right to exist as a trope. Indeed, it may be a flame bait, but locking it will help.

Evil Pedophile sounds like a good name. We did not have a trope with this name before, as both the page and history are empty, and the page is not locked. As far as I know, it is possible to edit a locked page via mods, or something like that -- is that right?

As a related trope, you can mention Little Kid Lover, which is about the situation when a character is mistaken for a pedophile.

I think that this trope should exist, too. I just don't know if it will allowed to.

Bumping this, since I found enough misuse of lolicon that it seems to be clearly warranted to make a trope. And if Paedo Hunt is supposed to be the trope, 1. it doesn't sound like that and 2. the description doesn't fit.

This may be a nonstarter, the main reason for the censoring is that pages about this tend to get used as soapboxes by apologists trying to "legitimise" pedophilia -- it tends to keep happening unless they're locked.

Regarding Paedo Hunt, I would probably use this for situations where someone is Mistaken For Pedophile, but the situation is Played For Drama instead of laughs, as well as Witch Hunts on pedophiles in general and parodies of such. And Chris Hansen and the "Why don't you have a seat over there?" thing from To Catch A Predator needs to be brought back -- that is the classic example that comes to my mind when I think of Paedo Hunt in media.

^^Lolicon, Shotacon and Paedo Hunt are all locked and doing fine.

    Several remarks here:
    1. Name is a bit wide - should we go for something to point out that it's an evil paedophile?
    2. I am quite sure that paedophilia is sexual atttraction to pre-teens, so the description might need help to find the proper definition.
    3. This needs to be properly distinguished from Paedo Hunt
    4. The examples for the old Evil Paedophile trope might be reused here, but they need some refining:

    Anime

    Comic Books
    • The Violator from Spawn is rather true to his name, though he's also of a case of "anything that moves."
      • Also from Spawn is Bill Kinkaid. He becomes Spawn's first victim and goes straight to hell, later getting recruited to Malebogia's army of the damned. He also makes a cameo in Grim Tales From Down Below.
    • The Toymaker in Lex Luthor Man Of Steel is portrayed as a villainous pedophile and child rapist. Luthor manipulates this public image to disgrace Superman when he saves his life.
    • Yellow Bastard from Sin City.

    Film
    • Two in Mystic River. The first features into the backstory of Dave. The second is killed by Dave, which makes Jimmy think that Dave killed his daughter.

    Literature
    • Baron Harkonnen in Dune has a strong preference for young boys around the age of 15 or so and finds it a pity that he'll have to kill Paul.
    • Humbert in Lolita, the book that originated the term Lolita Complex. Unfortunately, there are a large number of people that miss the point of the book. However, there are other pedophiles in the book who may be even worse.
    • In Elenium, Baron Harparin is a pedophile, and despised by almost everyone.
    • Demmin Nass, The Dragon from the first Sword Of Truth book. He was dispatched in a manner regarded by the protagonists as fitting.

    Live Action TV

    Video Games
    • There's a secondary quest in Dragon Age II where you track down a pedophile serial killer named Kelder. He actually begs you to kill him and it's portrayed as entirely the right thing to do. He admits no responsibility for his actions, however.

    Western Animation
    • South Park: When the boys join the Mountain Scouts their parents discover that the Troop Leader is Big Gay Al. They go on a small-scale Pedo Hunt on the supposition that since Big Gay Al is gay he must be an evil pedophile[[hottip:*:he is neither evil nor a pedophile]], and force him out. BGA is replaced by the manly man Mr. Grazier, who it turns out is an evil pedophile. Mr. Grazier eventually gets arrested, but there's no Pedo Hunt-style outrage.

I would prefer to keep the name "The Pedophile" rather than "Evil Pedophile". Is a pedophile evil because he is a pedophile? If yes, then "Evil Pedophile" is a redundant name. If not, then does that imply that there are less-evil pedophiles that would not be covered by this trope? For example, where would we put Herbert from Family Guy, whose pedophilia is Played For Laughs?

In this case, "evil" is too vague a term and should be left out.
  • If it's simply "Pedophile" then it's kind of sitting on chairs. I can't find an entry for "Murderer" and "Thief" just goes to the game.

It should be Evil Pedophile so that nobody would think we're endorsing it. Sorta like what led to Rape Is Okay tropes being renamed. (/sarcasm)

But I really think it should be Evil Pedophile because (1) pedophilia is a disorder, not a crime in itself; (2) "evil" is a more convenient way to say "agressive/criminal" -- i.e. an actual child rapist/molester.

Aaaand I just checked the Ephebophile page. All examples have been nuked by the Fast One as of yesterday. We might as well come up with a good description then, since this is likely going to remain a stub.

Ah, someone dug up my old YKTTW on the matter. If you ask me, the title and description need to indicate that it's about villains and not just pedophiles in general. You also need to get in contact with Fast Eddie to see if he's okay with this. Earlier, he stated that this trope is redundant with Paedo Hunt.

Just Pedophile is People Sit On Chairs IMO, but a Useful Note on pedophelia and related terms could work, as could an index of works featuring pedophilia (which would be functionally equivalent to having Pedophile as a trope, as the trope per se contains zero information - so why not make it an index?).

That's not how indexes are usually used. An Useful Notes page is better

    • In The Etched City, Raule has an affair with an underage boy. EDIT: It's been a while since I read it, but I seem to remember he was somewhere between 10 and 14 years old.
