Unraveling The Mummy

Defeating a Mummy by grabing a bandage and pulling.

Page Type:
How did we miss this?! Seen it a million times! There's nothing on [[Mummy]] or "bandage+grab" and similar searches.

A classic "gag" that makes no sense. Even assuming that the bandages don't tear because of their age, the entire mummy is done with a single strand, and ignoring the fact that the bandages were designed to well... stay on, there is generally nothing under the bandages but dust (Isn't preventing that the point of embalming someone?).

  • Appears in the the "yes, it's real" Superman meets the Quik Bunny comic.

Scrappy Doo does this in the opening credits when he first was introduced. Odd since at the time the monsters were still just guys in suits.

A Robot Chicken skit has the Thundercats do this to Mumm-Ra. At least there was a skeleton/corpse underneath that fell apart.

Happens in Raumschiff Gamestar, except that the "mummy" turns out to be an impostor who wrapped herself in bandages to stow away on the Gamestar (it doesn't make sense in context, either, it's just that kind of series).

    • Also happens in the opening credits of Whats New Scooby Doo. We don't see what's under the bandages because there's a Match Cut from swirls of bandage to a fingerprint on Velma's computer.

    • The Dungeons & Toons supplement for the Toon tabletop game has this as a standard way of beating a mummy. The first time Cheeso Grabbins tries it, there's nothing underneath. The second time, there's a skinny old man in boxer shorts.

Don't forget: Half the time, the mummy spins like a top when the bandage is yanked.

In Wizards Of Waverly Place, this is how Max defeats the infamous mummy that enslaved Juliet.

Happened innumerable times to the resident mummy in the ''Sabrina and the Groovy Ghoulies" '70s cartoon. When completely unraveled all that would be left were the two eyes that were visible through the gap in the bandages.

    Unknown Troper
This is currently lumped with All Cloth Unravels. This sub-trope is even described in the opening of that page.

Video Games: In WarioWare: Smooth Moves, one of the games involves pulling on a mummy's bandages to reveal what's underneath, which is usually not a corpse.

I saw that happen in a movie with a variation: after the cloth is removed we see the mummy's skeleton which promptly falls to the ground.
