Get on board the Quest Bus

A group of characters are on a quest, and on the way they pick up other characters who want to get to the same place.

Name Space:
Page Type:
You're on a quest. Maybe it's to defeat an evil wizard, maybe it's just to find a new home, but it's sure to be a long journey and you have to do it on your own.

However, who's that on the side of the road? It turns out he wants to reach the same place as you. Even though his reason for doing so may be different from yours, he decides to come along.

As you progress further you find yet another character, and he'd also like to come with your group. And then you meet yet another, perhaps more...

By the time you reach your destination your group may now have five members, and even though everyone has to fulfill their individual goals you can do it as a team rather than separate.

  • Star Wars, possibly inspired by The Wizard of Oz. We have Luke, who wants to be a Jedi and rescue the princess, Han Solo who just wants to be paid, and Obi-Wan who must take on Darth Vader.
  • The Wizard of Oz. It starts out as one character who must find the wizard to take her back home. However, as the journey goes on she meets a Scarecrow who wants a brain from the Wizard, a Tin Man who wants a heart, and a Cowardly Lion who wants courage.
    • This is a fairly standard formula for most Oz adaptations. In Return to Oz the characters who join Dorothy are Tik-Tok, Jack and the Gump and in Oz: The Great and Powerful we have Finley, China Girl and Glinda.

  • The Land Before Time. It starts off with just Littlefoot, but soon he is joined by Cera, Ducky, Petrie and Spike.

Isn't this covered under Debut Queue already?

Very common in video games where you have a bunch of party members.

    L Iterature
    • In Battle Royale as the students try and escape the island the protagonists encounter other students trying to do the same.

    Video Games
    • Played straight in almost every tales game, although it's quite common for characters to have to leave the party only to meet up again afterwards.

If there's a difference between this and Debut Queue it's that this trope has the characters joining the party specifically because they're heading to the same general location.

For example, Debut Queue mentions the first five members of the Straw Hat Pirates in One Piece. This is an example of both tropes because the first five are introduced in quick order, nearly all the Straw Hats are also heading into the depths of the Grand Line for their own varied reasons, believing they'll find their goal at or en route to the final island of Raftel.

The title immediately made me think of The Muppet Movie, where I believe they literally traveled by bus and picked up new muppets on their way to Hollywood.
