Canon Wank

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:
Trope
Much like Fan Wank where Fan Fic writers get their jollies from retconning the original material to suit their desires, Canon Wank is where people get their jollies fighting holy wars over what parts of an Expanded Universe are canon or not canon.

    Doctor Who. Just... Doctor Who.

The Legend Of Zelda is a variation, in that it's not what's canon that's the problem, it's what order it's in.

I'd prefer this to be called Canon Wank. Can Wank sounds like a dirty verb, at least in the UK.

Can Wank sounds like it has to do with toilets.

Never mind star trek doors - we already have star trek photo frames (the ones that you slot a media card in or drop files onto via USB and they cycle a slideshow)...

True. But Canon Wank is less ambiguous.

I'm renaming the trope now that I've heard the community opinion. I just called it Can Wank to rhyme with Fan Wank, but Canon Wank is close enough.

This name sounds more like something wankish that ends up finding its way into the canon.

    Isn't this Continuity Porn?

I'd say the divide between Continuity Porn and Canon Wank is the divide between writers of actual Expanded Universe material and the writers of Fan Fic and forum/fanblog/wiki posts.

If it's a work of fiction, it's Continuity Porn. If it's an attempt to document the minutia of the internal continuity of a series, fitting in everything including the directly contradictory stuff (or, simply, figure out a self consistent dating schema for the UNIT stories in the case of Doctor Who) it's Canon Wank.

Any attempt to work out how Sonic's (and so on) work in relation to phyiscs (albeit a distorted set of physics due to the conceit of a universe with seven Green Rocks which when their powers are combined becomes an Infinity Plus One Sword) probably counts. Now, if only a log of that conversation actually survived.

This sounds like Dis Continuity to me.

Dis Continuity has to be officially canon, doesn't it?

I think this is more the debates (which can veer into Holy War territory) caused by fans of various aspects of the Expanded Universe, or trying to figure out the continuity in the mess that is Doctor Who (and, presumably, series running over a similar length of time), with or without the Expanded Universe stuff.
