Infant Envy

When a woman wants a baby, can't have one, and goes to extreme measures to procure one.

I was watching American Horror Story and this is a major thing for two of the characters. Similarly, but not as dark in Raising Arizona. I don't have other examples at hand, but I know I've seen it before. A woman either cannot have a baby or had one taken from her somehow. This preys on her so that she will do incredible and sometimes terrible things to get this baby.

The pre-existing term for this, AFAIK, is "baby lust". It is not limited to women who can't have children; that is probably too specific.

The Hand That Rocks The Cradle had a malevolent nanny trying to imprint herself on a couple's children (and plotting to kill their mother), because she was incapable of having a baby (due to an emergency hysterectomy), and also for revenge on the mother of those children (whom she blames for that).

    • One Midsomer Murders episode has a couple who just lost their child, when one of the neighbor's kids (who'd been attacked by bullies) shows up with amnesia. They quickly convince him he's their son and get him to live in the basement, and impress on him that he must never go outside.
    • There was an Agatha Christie where the murderess had lost her child years prior because the victim had (unknowingly) infected her with measles, causing her to miscarry. Only when the victim revealed this (or rather, recalled how she had visited the murderess despite being sick) did she make the connection.

The title is a bit unclear, as it could apply equally to an older child envying the attention that a new baby sibling is getting.

On The Simpsons when Manjula Nahasapeemapetalan had octuplets it made Marge want another baby...despite the fact that they already have a baby.

Can we change the title? it sounds like "jealous towards the baby," like a formerly only child resents their new sibling because the baby takes up his parents time, instead of "jealous towards someone who has a baby"

In Eastenders, when Ronnie Mitchell's newborn son James died of SIDS she swapped it with Kat and Alfie Moon's living baby, Tommy, of the same age. Eventually Ronnie confessed and Tommy was returned to his rightful parents.

(Whatever category scripture should go under)

The Judgement of Solomon in the Old Testament makes this trope Older Than Feudalism. Two women, both mothers of babies, came to Solomon for a judgement. One claimed that the other, after accidentally smothering her baby while sleeping, had exchanged the two infants. The other woman denied this and both claimed to be the mother of the living baby. Solomon declared that the baby must be cut in two, each woman receiving half. The real mother cried out, "Oh Lord, give the baby to her, just don't kill him!" Solomon gave the baby to her.
