Stating the Subjectively Obvious
A character vocalizes something that is obvious to him/her but not to the audience
Sometimes characters have information about the environment or setting that the audience doesn't. In order to relay that information, the character says aloud something that is painfully obvious to them so that the audience knows what is going on. For example, a character may walk up to a door, try the handle, and say to no one in particular, "It's locked." This is especially common in video games where animations cannot convey the circumstances, and in detective stories when the detective needs to show the information they gleaned from clues requiring specialized knowledge to interpret. - In Tomb Raider, Lara will say "No" if you try to use a key that doesn't fit in a certain lock.
- In the first level of Jedi Knight II, attempting to use a console before it is powered up results in Kyle saying, "It's offline."
