One of my favorite aspects of the original comic series was the development of Ozymandias; Adrian Veidt. When first introduced, Veidt seemed like a pretentious fake whose only power was self-promotion. When he claims to be able to catch a bullet, no one thinks he's serious. Gradually he is revealed to be a brilliant businessman, then an outstanding athlete, and a formidable hand-to-hand combatant.

I thought he was a fool for letting Rorschach and Nite Owl into his lair. I needn't have worried, he demolishes both vigilantes without either of them laying a blow on him. Then Laurie pulls a gun and shoots him... And Ozymandias snatches the bullet out of midair! I read that over twenty years ago and still remember my astonishment.
