* AdaptationDistillation: The show is much more popular than the books they're based on, which is saying something when the show itself is pretty obscure.
* AmericansHateTingle: A lot of British fans really hate the [=DiC=] series, particularly the characters' loud voices and [[DenserAndWackier broader humor.]]
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic:
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ro73w6BuZyE The reggae-tinged theme song]] from the American series, which was often used as a {{Leitmotif}} in the show's score.
** [[https://https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oe7uKhHj-kk The swing-tinged theme song]] from the British series.
* BaseBreakingCharacter: Trash to an extent. On one hand, he's part of the Creator/DiCEntertainment series that Brits generally despise and acts like a JerkAss for the most part. On the other hand, he has his share of fans who love him for his funny, sarcastic lines and see him as an UglyCute JerkassWoobie.
* JerkassWoobie: Trash from the adaptation of the series is a "mean pitbull" stereotype with a reputation as a sarcastic bully but he's been tricked into eating fertilizer to cure a cold, nearly run over by a train, had his birthday forgotten and his owner apparently lives in squalor. Also, in one episode, he and Whatamess are captured by a dog catcher and sent to a pound. When Trash finds out that all his usual escape exits are sealed, he breaks down into a fit of tears, thinking he'll be left to die in the pound. Also, his UglyCute [[http://joenipote.com/images/whatamess_snap3.jpg?crc=319969384 character design]] only serves to amplify his "woobie" factor.
* ViewerGenderConfusion: What-a-Mess's voice is not extremely indicative of either gender, and since he's not a FunnyAnimal, he lacks any TertiarySexualCharacteristics as well. On top of that, the natural traits of Afghan Hounds tend to make them look rather [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afghan_Hound feminine by default]]. When What-a-Mess is clean and groomed (a rare occurrence), one could easily be forgiven for mistaking him as a girl.
