[[folder: Tropes A to C]]
* AccidentalInnuendo: Naotora's deification cutscene shows her charging at a deified Lu Bu and before delivering him her kick which she missed, her bracelet activates [[{{Stripperiffic}} her deified form]]. When she gets back on her feet, she notices her outfit and feels embarrassed about it. Lu Bu's reaction to this: "This is interesting!" Of course, it could either be interpreted as his amazement on Naotora's resolve to fight him or [[MaleGaze his interest to whatever she is wearing]].
* AntiClimaxBoss
** [[spoiler:Orochi X]] in ''Warriors Orochi 3'' is less than satisfactory, considering the build-up throughout the game, including having players climb a huge spiraling staircase to get to the boss. Upon fighting it, the character's by itself without any reinforcements, and a few well-placed "[[LimitBreak Musou Attacks]]" can end this quickly. [[GameplayStorySegregation Despite shown to be capable of defeating Lu Bu with ease in the story]], ths boss is a GlassCannon - has devastating attacks, yet can't take much of a beating.
** In ''3: Ultimate'', the [[spoiler:Kyubi-no-Kitsune]], see DisappointingLastLevel. Though, character-wise, it's justified that unlike Orochi, she's not a BloodKnight DeathSeeker and is a rather cowardly manipulator who relies more on deceptions than raw powers. Not to mention that story-wise, unlike Orochi who always fights without ever getting weaker or holding back, she has an AchillesHeel.[[labelnote:Spoiler]]She's getting weaker as her tails are being destroyed. When they're all destroyed at the end, she's at her weakest.[[/labelnote]]
* AwesomeEgo: Taigong Wang, who, while frequently boasts about him being great and magnificent, is indeed an incredibly powerful individual ([[PhysicalGod being a Mystic and all]]), comes up with numerous strategies for his allies that usually succeed (depending on the player's in-battle performance). It helps in that he has a line that shows his actual stance towards evil in general in the second game, and his view of humanity is summed up thusly:
-->'''Taigong Wang''': ...I know how strong you humans are. With your combined might, there is no enemy that you cannot defeat.\
''(Talking to Xu Shu in ''Ultimate'')''\
'''Xu Shu''': I hope that one day I can become more like you.\
'''Taigong Wang''': You hope to become omnipotent? That is a pretty far goal to reach.
** Even then, it also ties into genuinely expressing surprise at something that beats his plans, [[CannotTellALie no matter what]].
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic:
** Considering that this is a crossover between ''Dynasty Warriors'' and ''Samurai Warriors'', expect a combination of rock and techno with Chinese and Japanese musical instruments. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83IuUM1TdMA "Samurai Scanners"]], [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgqVBNlbgbM "Fusion!"]], [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3g1GtWBe_7s "Welcome Back"]], [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tw2YikU3raA "Eastern Wind"]] and [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYu_kOJtCO4 "Triple Helix"]] are some of the best examples out there. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSSl8IUG_Fo Samurai Scanners is also remixed for the fourth game]] with its tempo increased.
** The music played in the character and stage selection menu, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iqz15mnQsQs "Optic Line"]], really keeps you pumping as you prepare your characters for battle. The third game's ''Ultimate'' expansion for Gauntlet/Unlimited Mode has a different version for the stage select called "Optic Line II", while fourth game brings it back as [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWGIOu7cOeE a remix to its original form]].
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8R32Fl02TiQ "Limpid Luster"]], which is played in the gallery and options menu, gives you a peaceful melody. Its successor, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hv3l6--TbbQ "Limpid Light"]], is very calm and soothing as well.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoA5S1mQ2wM "Antispecter"]] is indeed a cool song and this is even played in one cutscene in ''[=WO2=]'' where Nobunaga jumps over Fu Xi in his white horse.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4ve2MMLRwU "Incarnation of Evil"]] and [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NR1YAu0jh4g "Decisive Battle"]] are played in the final battle of ''[=WO1=]'' and ''[=WO2=]'' where you pulverized all of Orochi's force before you face the man himself.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pe8uEdYucFE "Miracle Convolution"]] from the fourth game is a fusion of rock and techno with an orchestral build. The sounds of violin and trumpets really give a sense of triumph.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCR6z9VY_CE Orochi's Theme]] from the Japan-only ''Z'' game, which is included in the PSP version of ''[=WO2=]'', is always played when you finally face him. The third game while officially bringing the said theme to the West for the first time (unless one played the PSP version of the second game), also brings in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmLDc0Ofuj8 another remix]] when you face him again in the last battle.
* BaseBreakingCharacter:
** Himiko. Some people love her personality, while some wish she was more akin to her ''Kessen II'' portrayal. This mainly due to her ''very deadly'' Musou Attack as a CPU and her possibly irritating and questionable devotion to Da Ji leading to the fact that she's technically part of the "bad guy's team"; which leads to possible awkward reception towards her when she has more "peaceful" scenarios with the resistance army in ''Warriors Orochi 3'' (as some people may not [[EasilyForgiven "easily forgive her"]]). A select amount of those who have hatred towards Da Ji would not enjoy Himiko any one bit because of this. Even moreso, there's always contrivances that made Himiko hostile to your party, and yet be a fangirl to Da Ji; as shown in ''4''. Unlike Masamune and Keiji who ended up vindicated due to Orochi being revealed to be more of an AntiVillain and it's directly Orochi that they trusted, not Da Ji; Himiko is dedicated more on Da Ji than Orochi, and Da Ji is more blatantly evil, so Himiko's fangirling over Da Ji ends up making her look like an irritating HorribleJudgeOfCharacter to her detractors. [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking And being a]] ThatOneBoss [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking whenever encountered as an enemy does not do her any favors.]] For her supporters, though, her innocence is seen as something nice or actually humanizing the otherwise evil Da Ji.
** Sun Wukong. It would be no secret in that due to him evolving into a hero in his [[Literature/JourneyToTheWest origin]], he ends up serving the villains, mainly Kiyomori out of a debt due to the evil sorcerer freeing him. He was going as far as making sure Kiyomori revived Orochi (in his debut) as well as brainwashing people (in ''3''). Needless to say, while some would find it interesting that the overpowered Monkey King of legend is on the villains' side, a few people would no doubt call him a completely ungrateful bastard due to his motivations; his casual reaction to Xingcai and Ina calling out on him in the second game at Wuhong Mountains didn't help matters either. Adding in to FridgeLogic is due to Wukong's Gold Pupil Fire Eyes, his iconic golden eyes with gave him the ability to see evil in all forms (and gave him a weakness to smoke); because of this, it would be rather foolish and enraging towards those who studied the original novel in that why Wukong can't clearly see who he's serving is evil especially [[ShownTheirWork since they had a ton if not all of his iconic abilities down to a pat with this portrayal]]. Although some of the dialogues with Sanzang implies that he hasn't completed the journey, he just ditched it due to the debt with Kiyomori who got to him first.
** Tamamo-no-Mae ([[spoiler:or by proxy, her true form]]) is either a well-written sinister villain, or is someone who happens to be a complete JerkAss that is denying people who thwart her deeds [[PayEvilUntoEvil have every right to retaliate at her]] [[LaserGuidedKarma for all the horrible shit she's done]] (on top of she herself also tending to harbor grudges like so).
* CharacterRerailment:
** If you're one of those who despise Masamune's and Keiji's fanboy worship on Orochi, then rejoice because in fourth game where all the human characters' memories had been erased, both men no longer follow Orochi and fully commit themselves to the coalition. In addition to Kojuro being playable, Masamune himself becomes nicer with a {{Tsundere}} side on him. The only downside is that Keiji can only be recruited via side mission and has no role in the main storyline. Although by that time, Orochi has been revealed to be a TragicVillain and [[spoiler:formerly a virtuous Mystic (Yinglong) and his consciousness, Shuten Douji, is a good guy]], their fanboyism might have been vindicated since ''3''. And just in case you're worried that the mantle got passed down to those who served [[spoiler:Odin, the true BigBad of the game]], Koei made sure that [[spoiler:they're not really loyal to Odin, just buying time to prepare the heroes to sweep in and save the day, even if they become late-joiners.]]
** In the first two games, Sima Yi sided with Orochi just to boast his ego and intelligence and willingly made attempts to crush his former Wei colleagues only to be beaten by Shingen and joined him to once again boast his own ego and intelligence (since the first two games used the characterizations in ''Dynasty Warriors 5'', where Sima Yi was at the peak of his SmugSnake [[TheStarscream Starscream]] characterization). After being promoted as the patriarch of the Jin kingdom with his sons being playable in ''Dynasty Warriors 7'', Sima Yi has been rerailed into a dedicated Wei/Jin officer who fights for the coalition in the third game, almost similar to his portrayal during the age of ''Dynasty Warriors 4''. [[EasilyForgiven None of the Wei officers nor his children mentioned his time as an Orochi lackey.]] His son, Sima Zhao, being the one of the leaders of the coalition may have an effect in his sudden shift.
* CharacterTiers: Based on character safety, and stage completion time on a stage with proper testing conditions. In general, in a Tier list, the Top Tier upwards qualified as a GameBreaker in their own rights with the God/Broken/S+ Tier and the upper of Top tier as those considered over the top broken. Naturally, the list are reserved for the most efficient and destructive characters (1!Diao Chan, Kunoichi, 1!Guan Ping, 2!Huang Zhong, 2!Cao Ren) or a design flaw (Sun Jian).
* CommonKnowledge: In ''[=WO4=]'', a lot of players assume that [[spoiler:Loki is Odin's son]] due to the popular portrayal from Creator/{{Marvel Comics}} regarding the Norse gods. However, it was never stated in his bio or mentioned in dialogue that the two are related. In Norse mythology, [[spoiler:Loki and Odin are actually SwornBrothers]].
* CompleteMonster: [[spoiler:[[AdaptationalVillainy Odin]], from the fourth game's original version, is a ruthless god who is terrified of dying ever since he survived [[{{Gotterdammerung}} Ragnarok]]. Lured into Zeus's new world with an attempt to dominate it, Odin starts a war and tricks Ares into murdering his own father Zeus, slowly gaining more power with the intention of using the world tree Yggdrasil. Odin's intention is to [[MultiversalConqueror conquer everything in the realms]] by [[OmnicidalManiac exterminating all life]] to leave himself the one being left, gleefully trying to destroy the heroes and their armies so he can reign supreme as the [[ItsAllAboutMe one master of all existence]]]].
* ContestedSequel: ''Warriors Orochi 4'' is this to some, unfortunately. While gameplay and graphics wise it does have a step up from its predecessors, the biggest reasons it is considered arguably a step down is the cutting of features and modes that even were in vanilla 3, the complete absence of alternate colors and outfits which are listed as DLC, and the complete lack of crossover characters, which is one of the big reasons that 3 was so well received. The expansion tries to compensate it by bringing three crossover characters back and adding an Infinity Mode.
* ContinuityLockOut: Despite being a ContinuityReboot, some plot elements from ''Warriors Orochi 4'' could make newcomers scratch their heads such as anything about Orochi particularly with his origins which also counted as a LateArrivalSpoiler.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tropes D to G]]
* DemonicSpiders: ''Samurai Warriors'' characters (or characters of Japanese origin using the same moveset system) are this when you fight them, since their Musou Attack fires instantly and stuns you when activated, leaving you helpless against the ensuing attacks. Himiko deserves a special mention since her Musou does ridiculous amount of damage and can easily kill you thanks to using this mechanic. The only way to deal with them with this in mind is to force them airborne with such attacks as much as possible, or have something on hand that can one-shot them.
* DesignatedVillain: Apart from his BloodKnight attire and a few throw-away lines suggesting it in the first game, Orochi has never explicitly shown any signs of being evil. Even the average mook in his army has probably committed more unholy deeds than the Serpent King himself. Then the second game outrightly retconned him into a [[spoiler: DeathSeeker who only wishes to escape [[FateWorseThanDeath the fate of suffering for all eternity.]]]] The third game plays with this. [[spoiler:The world-destroying Hydra is essentially Orochi's power unchained, but at the same time you get to recruit the personification of Orochi's consciousness into your party.]]
* DisappointingLastLevel:
** The showdown with [[spoiler: Kyubi.]] Set in the unimpressive Odawara Castle stage, you start out with a small force to fight the enemy, who's got even fewer troops of their own. Then the battle proceeds in an uninteresting fashion with [[spoiler: Kyubi]] sending out croonies one after another, who at this stage of the game would barely pose any threat to the player. Then halfway through the battle, she starts fleeing, and gets chased all over the map while throwing out weak cronies at you again, until she finally gets soundly defeated by the humans, with no remarkable resistance given whatsoever. Not very exciting for a final level, is it?
** The final battle with Odin takes place on a Greek architecture map which actually the same map used to defeat the Olympians at the end of chapter four. What makes matters worse is that it's also the exact same map as the penultimate mission where you defeat both Orochi X [[spoiler:and the original Orochi]]. While the final battle map tries to improvise by adding the Yggdrasil tree which is Odin's place, it's very strange that the map has been used ''three times'' prior to this. When you finally confront Odin, you can easily prevent him from attacking by spamming your Sacred Treasure magic on him. Later, [[spoiler:a mind-controlled Loki]] appears but you can ignore him because defeating him is just a bonus battle objective unless you're in the chaotic level trying to get unique weapons.
* DracoInLeatherPants: A lot of fans on Twitter love Odin because of his attractiveness and edgy persona. There are even those fans who sympathize with his cause because he just wants to live.
* FanNickname: "Tron Hui", as a result of Nezha's character design to ''Film/{{Tron}}'' and resemblance in personality to and Zhong Hui.
* GoddamnBats: Wolves in the 3rd game, mainly Gauntlet/Unlimited Mode. They cannot be flinched or sent flying by your attacks, unlike enemies such as tigers from ''Dynasty Warriors 8'' which, while still difficult to deal with, would at least respond to your attacks. They also come with a bite attack that acts as a grab/throw that mauls your face in with repeated damage ticks, making them a serious problem if you can't manage to take them out fast. In Gauntlet Mode, they are constantly leveling up from the Miasma, meaning that it's less likely for you to kill them quickly, and once they get powerful enough, you would be running the risk of having a pack of them hunting you down all over the map, and if you get locked into their grab, you're almost assured to die.
** Sorcerers, being absent from the Dynasty games for so long, now return in Gauntlet Mode, and become more of a pest than ever. Elemental damage aside, their projectiles are now fast and deadly accurate, capable of knocking you over, and some even slows your movement. At a low Miasma level they are simply an annoyance, but under higher levels getting hit by volleys of spells is almost assured death.
*** Charm Sorcerers are even more so since their blasts ''severely'' slow down your character, leaving them a sitting duck if you don't have a formation with Hi-Speed.
* GoodBadBugs:
** In the first game, defeating a playable officer with Xu Huang's Jump Charge locks him in the same animation, making him [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olpImvTgpdQ spin like an helicopter]] until he gets hit. Merging this with [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAQSXRaR5k0 Ginchiyo's R1 glitch]] can cause him to fly like one. Thus, in the Japanese community, his FanNickname of "Jocopter/Xucopter" was born.
** ''In Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate'', a programming oversight in the Survival challenge of Duel Mode made your growth points winnings accumulate after defeat (if you lose and gain 40,000 points, the next time would be 40,000 plus whatever you earned the next time, and so on), as long as you selected rematch right after losing. This means you can quickly get to a point of earning 200,000 growth points PER RUN, and can max out two or three characters in about five, 30-win runs of survival Duel Mode easily.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tropes H to M]]
* HarsherInHindsight:
** Let's just say that 2018 is the year [[spoiler:Loki died. However, this version of Loki succeeded in helping the heroes defeat the BigBad at the cost of his life while MCU!Loki died trying to stop Thanos but failed which [[TheBadGuyWins goes downhill from there]] if you've seen ''Film/AvengersInfinityWar'']].
** The side mission, "No One Wins a Quarrel", has Nene, Lu Meng and Zhang Chunhua stopping the battle between Mitsunari and Ieyasu and defeating Kiyomori for brainwashing them. Mitsunari and Ieyasu comment that they hope that they never end up fighting each other while Kiyomasa, Mitsunari, and Masanori agree with Nene that fighting theirs friends is foolish. Sadly, it's a ForegoneConclusion because Mitsunari and Ieyasu are fated to be enemies and Kiyomasa and Masanori joins the latter, forcing them to fight their former friend while Nene is powerless to stop it. The worst part? This mission took place in Sekigahara.
* HighTierScrappy:
** In ''4'', the God characters and ''Samurai Warriors'' characters are categorically broken. While the [[PurposefullyOverpowered gods]] are expected to be overpowered, the latter is due to their hyper attacks, which can constantly activate elements. Compared to this, the EX attacks of the ''Dynasty Warriors'' characters seem very middling (not helping are the changes to the Dynasty figures as of ''8'' which neutered their elemental activation quite a bit, especially on their EX Attacks). Thankfully, the lack of elemental activation was later fixed in update 1.05, making a majority of EX Attacks gain extra elemental activation. As a result, characters like Jia Chong benefited from this massively, including others like Lu Su and Diaochan.
** Cyborg Nezha himself had his infamous C5 neutered from ''3'', where it no longer activates elements. However, he instead makes up for it with a glitch where he can perform his Unique God Spell regardless of the current amount of either his Musou or Mana gauge, done whenever he happens to jump after a certain interval without casting another prior Normal/Charge God Spell.
* HilariousInHindsight: You'll grin quite a bit more here on realizing that after duking it out here, Guan Yu, Sun Wukong, Nuwa, Nezha, Susano'o and Daji can form a team to compete in ''VideoGame/{{Smite}}''. By ''Warriors Orochi 4'', you can also add up Zeus, Athena, Ares and Odin there. [[spoiler:So is Loki!]]. And by ''4 Ultimate'', you can also add up Terra (under her Greek name Gaia), Hades and Erlang Shen (under his other alias Yang Jian) on the list.
** Not to mention Hi-Rez Studios even came up with their own cyber-based Nezha after Koei did.
** A LOT of people were most likely confused whenever they heard both Taigong Wang and Sun Wukong's names in the Japanese on'yomi reading (as respectively, Taikou Bou and Son Gokuu), meaning they may have been thinking way too hard about [[Manga/HoshinEngi two]] [[Franchise/DragonBall different]] ''[[Magazine/ShonenJump Shounen Jump]]'' manga/anime that have their own portrayals/versions of those two very characters with their names in that popular Japanese reading (because their names are technically the exact same)...
*** In the former case, this even applies to Fu Xi, Nuwa, Da Ji and Shen'nong as well (they're respectively known as "Fukki", "Joka", "Dakki" and "Shinnou" in on'yomi).
*** Even once more regarding both Nezha and Taigong Wang, they have something from the [[Manga/HoshinEngi manga]] that's carried over to their portrayals here: for the former, a bracer-version of his universe rings weapon that can be fired like a RocketPunch; and for the latter, a straight whip named after the deity Leigong/Raikou (Thunder Duke; though it was technically used by someone else).
** It's quite hilarious to point out that this would be an earlier time that Joan of Arc and Achilles would be either fighting against each other or fighting side by side, before getting called in [[Literature/FateApocrypha the Great Holy Grail War...]]
*** Speaking of Wukong, this wouldn't be Creator/RikiyaKoyama's only role as a Monkey King; speed up to ''Manga/{{Gintama}}'' via its 319th episode, and then we have Koyama cast as Shoukaku Neptune, a MonkeyKingLite.
** Takatora's Sacred Treasure is called Dainsleif. This is a VA joke for those who have seen ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamIronBloodedOrphans'' where Takatora's [[Creator/MasayaMatsukaze voice actor]] also voiced Gaelio Bauduin, who is a member of [[BigBad Gjallarhorn]], a military organization that possessed the armor-piercing WeaponsOfMassDestruction called the ''Dainsleif''. The Dainsleif is also known for being a MemeticMutation in the show due to the BigBad's [[CurbstompBattle heavy usage of it to defeat the protagonists]].
** The reveal that [[spoiler:Perseus is actually Loki]] makes it very interesting most especially when Yu Jin has a special conversation with that guy when he confronts him. Yu Jin's voice actor, Creator/AtsushiMiyauchi, is the Japanese dub actor of [[Comicbook/TheIncredibleHulk Bruce Banner/The Hulk]] (Creator/MarkRuffalo version) in the Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse who had experience in dealing with puny gods like him.
** Likewise, [[spoiler:Loki impersonated a friendly mythical figure, played the protagonists like a fiddle and betrayed them to fulfill his one goal of vengeance against a father figure... hold on, Loki, [[VideoGame/{{Persona 5}} are you repeating the life of the guy who got you as his Ultimate Persona?]]]]
** ''Warriors Orochi 4'' was announced a month prior to the release of ''VideoGame/GodOfWarPS4'' which also deals with Greek and Norse mythologies[[note]]Those who played the previous games know that the entire Olympians pantheon is dead because Kratos killed all of them[[/note]] and incorporates the HackAndSlash gameplay. And like ''[=WO4=]'', Odin is the BigBad who also wants to escape Ragnarok but this version is a ruthless, tyrannical jerk who is a TortureTechnician and committed genocide on his enemies which makes WO!Odin look like a pansy. Likewise, the twist about [[spoiler:Loki posing as a Greek hero]] is already pulled by this game where [[spoiler:Kratos' young son, [[AssistCharacter Atreus]], will be Loki in the future because his late mother, who was also Kratos' second wife, was actually the giantess Laufrey. So yes, this Loki is half-Olympian and half-Giant]]. More hilariously, one of the random Olympian officers is named ''Kratos'' (though more likely named after the minor God that shared the same name, not the Ghost of Sparta). Some people noticed the similarities and joked if KOEI's staff played ''VideoGame/GodOfWarPS4'' and Kratos is going to be a guest character.
** Though minor, one of the [[Main/GiantMook Gyuki Clones]] is named [[Characters/JumpForce Galena]]
* HoYay:
** Zhao Yun & Yukimura, due to being the poster boys of their home franchises and sharing the same passion of determination and loyalty.
** Cao Pi & Mitsunari. Da Ji herself pairs them together and calls it in her words, "a match made in heaven" which ironically is very true after these two men realize that they share the same goal of bringing down Orochi from within. They both also have special dialogue for each other.
** Cao Pi and Ares are paired together a lot on Pixiv, because they have a special dialogue to each other which is usually about their daddy issues. Ironically, Cao Pi is mostly portrayed in fanarts as [[{{Ukefication}} the bottom of the pairing]] in contrast to several of his slash pairings where he's the top.
** Himiko and Da Ji are pretty cute also... [[spoiler:In one particular mission in the second game, you overhear a concerned Da Ji desperately screaming for Himiko to escape from the Shu forces. Himiko expresses concern toward Da Ji taking this battle all for herself. And, in the last chapter, Himiko will pray for Da Ji's safety if she engages in battle.]] In the third game, if, after you've gotten them as player characters, you take them back to battles where they're the enemy, special dialogue is triggered where they ''flip out'' at the thought of fighting each other.
** Ding Feng and Okuni bring romantic/flirtatious undertones to most of their dialogue, no matter who they're talking to.
** In the fourth game, Naotora encounters Lianshi for the first time and gushes on her beauty until she reminds herself that she's on the battlefield.
** Also in the fourth game, Yukimura is ''very close'' to Perseus ever since the latter saved him from a deified Nobunaga. When Perseus goes missing in the middle of the story, Yukimura is very dedicated in searching for him. [[spoiler:But when it is revealed that he's Loki and has been using him and the others since the beginning, Yukimura is very devastated; however, he insists that there's still some goodness in him regardless of his actions. Near the end, Loki eventually helps Yukimura in stopping Odin and even begs him to kill him after Odin controls his body which the young warrior comply]].
** Because of [[AmbiguouslyRelated their ambiguous relationship]] in the game, Odin [[spoiler:and Loki]] are also paired together. This is very evident in the game where after forcibly controlling the latter at the final battle, the former exclaims that they will rule the universe together. This is even FridgeBrilliance if you realize in Norse mythology, the two gods are SwornBrothers.
* IKnewIt:
** Fans have been speculating that asides from the poster boys, Zhao Yun and Yukimura, 6 popular characters from ''[=DW=]'' and ''[=SW=]'' would get the Deification forms for ''Warriors Orochi 4''. As expected, Mitsunari, Cao Pi, Guan Yinping, Naotora, Lu Bu and even, Nobunaga were chosen to have Deification forms.
** In relation to popularity, several fans guessed that Lu Xun would be one of the eight characters with deified forms as he is constantly in the top 10 popularity polls of ''Dynasty Warriors''. Though he didn't made it in the final cut, the opening cutscene of ''[=WO4=]'' shows one of the bracelets landing near his location which many suspected that he's intended to be part of the deification. Turns out that they're right; WordOfGod confirmed that he was supposed to have a Deification form but was held back because he's a strategist not a "frontline warrior".
** Fans hoped that Diamondback would be playable for ''[=WO4=]'' after he appeared in the group picture of the game. Koei made some joke out about it on April Fools' Days where he's centralized as the "hero". Then a day before the game's release in Japan, he's finally confirmed to be playable.
** The official trailer actually teases the new playable character, Yang Jian, and the game producer acknowledged that only the Eastern players are able to guess Yang Jian because of the appearance of his dog as one of the new Sacred Treasures. Then, the Sony Playstation page for ''4: Ultimate'' revealed his name which confirms all suspicions.
* ItWasHisSled:
** Orochi [[spoiler:used to be the Mystic general, Yinglong, who was corrupted by the Mirror]]. His origins became a LateArrivalSpoiler in the fourth game, no thanks to Fu Xi.
** Perseus [[spoiler:is actually Loki in disguise]]. This is very well-known because the marketing for the 2019 Musou Festival, where Perseus's [[Creator/HiroShimono voice actor]] is one of the hosts, spoils it. The Platform/{{Steam}} trading cards [[spoiler:featuring Loki, but not Perseus]] and ''4 Ultimate'' [[spoiler:adding the ''real'' Perseus as a separate character]] also don't help matters.
* ItsEasySoItSucks: The fourth game seems to have a bit of a difficulty drop, especially with the sheer power of the Sacred Treasures' God Spells which also [[{{Nerf}} makes Musou Attacks quite redundant]].
* MagnificentBastard: From ''Warriors Orochi 4'':
** Zeus is the king of Olympus and a charismatic, bold god who creates a new dimension to manipulate the warriors of the world into battle. Presiding over the chaos, Zeus turns out to have a very specific purpose: to lure the evil OmnicidalManiac god Odin to his new dimension to destroy him. While initially killed by his son's betrayal, Zeus later returns and is able to see Ares' defeat through, revealing he also intended to manipulate his own followers and children to make them realize the importance of mortals.
** Loki takes the form of Perseus, manipulating the heroes to steal the magical bracelets for Odin's sake. Helping to bring the heroes close to defeat by his ruthless cleverness, Loki seemingly advances Odin's goals all the while while few ever managing to suspect him. By the end however, Loki reveals his newfound care for humanity and that he manipulated Odin as well, seeking revenge for those he loved slain by Odin during Ragnarok.
* SugarWiki/MostWonderfulSound:
** In ''3 Ultimate'': Get a Scroll Of Enlightenment (makes every enemy drop an experience scroll for a limited time) go to a large group of enemies and unleash a Musou or a similar crowd clearing attack and just listen to the stream of level up "dings".
** For the series in general, it can be pretty cool since that the Warriors/Musou series is well-known for some rather bland attack animations and nothing too over-the-top or unique, to hear that awesome altered classic Musou attack sound effect when you hit the R1 button and thus are treated to a cool-looking attack called the 'Type Action', with possibly rewarding effects; the sound was mostly for Power-types (and a few select Speed and Technique-types) only in the first two games and ''[[NoExportForYou Z]]'', but was added for all character types in the third game.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tropes N to S]]
* {{Narm}}:
** As with most of Koei's products via "hit-or-miss", the series is rather awkward in its script for treating characters as they were from separate worlds when technically, they're all mainly from different timelines. This gets even more blatant when characters introduced in the third installment come from universes that are ''literally future-versions of their original land'' (e.g. Ayane, Ryuu and Kasumi coming from a future version of Japan). On that note, Ayane even knows who Yoshitsune is via him being a historical figure, and that part is never touched upon again.
** In Wei's final stage in the first game, the only actual Wei officers are Cao Cao and Cao Pi. The other allied officers are Mitsunari and Samurai generics. This makes Cao Pi's line "Show them the might of Wei!" unintentionally laughable.
** The opening cutscene of ''[=WO4=]'' has Zeus reviewing the events that transpired from the previous games which includes the Sun family defeating Orochi from ''[=WO1=]''. It's very weird that the ''[=WO1=]'' cutscene shows Sun Quan's ''[=DW5=]'' version who is bearded and yet, ''[=WO4=]'' uses ''[=DW8=]'' design's of Sun Quan who is clean shaven.
** The fact that generic Greek and Norse officers are named after famous heroes and minor gods such as Kratos and Forseti can either make any fan of mythology cringe or laugh on its ridiculousness. Kratos especially since it's easy to confuse the name with the protagonist of ''VideoGame/GodOfWar''.
** When Bao Sanniang explains to the coalition that Zhao Yun and the younger Shu officers are forced to serve the Olympians because [[IHaveYourWife Athena held Liu Shan as a hostage]], Liu Bei is shocked on this revelation. This is the first time outside in-game quotes where Liu Bei shows ''[[PapaWolf actual]]'' [[PapaWolf concern to his son]]. After Liu Shan is rescued which causes Zhao Yun and the Shu officers to defect from the Olympians at the end of chapter 3, Liu Bei welcomes back Zhao Yun and his swore brothers' sons (Guan Suo and Xing and Zhang Bao) to the coalition. The problem is that he never asks his son if he's okay after being imprisoned in Odani Castle for a long time, as if he forgot about him.
* OnceOriginalNowOverdone: As time passed and both ''Dynasty'' and ''Samurai'' added more characters, the games are slightly dampened in quality since it will not allow you to play as other historical officers who debuted ''afterwards''. Thankfully this would be averted in ''Warriors Orochi 4'', but as long as Koei kept introducing new characters in the original Dynasty or Samurai Warriors games, it seemed inevitable to happen again in the future.
* PanderingToTheBase:
** The games themselves are meant for those who are familiar with ''Dynasty Warriors'' and ''Samurai Warriors''. The first game is, at least, tame for casual players but the fourth game levels it up since it expects the players not only to be familiar to the characters but also to the plot from the three previous games.
** The main reason the eight characters got deified in the fourth game because they're very popular among the fanbase. The most blatant examples would be Cao Pi, Guan Yinping, Mitsunari, and Naotora.
* PlayTheGameSkipTheStory: In the fourth game, players enjoy the gameplay and the gimmicks but they find the main storyline to be very linear and less engaging, particularly with the last chapters due to Zeus' flimsy excuse of rebuilding the world [[spoiler:despite his for good intentions]] and Odin's motive of wanting total annihilation being rather generic. Likewise, many characters, such as those who played big roles in the previous games, are pushed aside near the closing chapters which is the reason several players prefer the side missions where these characters have their moments to shine.
* PortingDisaster: While the Wii U version is by no means ''bad'', it does have some draw-distance issues that make soldiers seem to pop up right out of nowhere. Similar problems exist in the Vita version of ''Ultimate'', and are much less excusable given that similar issues are ''not'' present in the more-advanced port of ''Dynasty Warriors 8 XL''.
* RootingForTheEmpire: It's not surprising that many players find Orochi to be very badass and some considered him as some sort of an AntiVillain who is trying to test humanity's potential to beat him [[spoiler:and kill him so he can be put to rest]]. ''Ultimate'' adds his backstory which many players see him as a TragicVillain. It even helps that his faction has a set of colorful characters including his generic playable mooks.
* ScrappyMechanic:
** An automatic game over occurs if the character being played dies. What's grating about this is that the other two should be still available.
** The first two games forced your co-op partner to use the same team as you. Thankfully changed in ''Z'' (albeit [[NoExportForYou not released internationally]]) and ''3''.
** The Musou Battlefields in ''3'', due to them being pretty limited to what you can create, such as having a limit to the edits you can do, unable to type in your own dialogue for units, and overall being very limiting with the ways you can customize each battle. Thankfully ''Ultimate'' fixed practically all these issues, making the mode much better.
** The relationship mechanic in 3 can be this, simply because specific characters are needed to reach a specific relationship level to unlock some extra levels. It doesn't help that these characters often include hard to play characters. Thankfully, the teahouse makes this much easier to do (especially when you reach chapter 4).
** In ''4'', the presence of clones in the battlefield breaks the immersion when you're playing most especially when you thought the character that you have selected to play is important in the mission because they're the ones leading this mission except you ran into their clone in the battlefield instead of their generic replacements. So imagine you're playing as Lu Xun because you're doing his mission except that there's his clone running around instead of his generic son. Of course, there's the recommended characters guide which would prevent you from encountering that but most players choose to ignore it and rather play their favorite characters instead. It gets worse that regardless which character you played, there's no special conversation initiated whenever you encountered other characters on the battlefield as if the player characters are merely spectators. It's only in some side missions where the player characters get to talk for a bit.
*** Ultimate is even worse about this, as it has stages where the recommended characters will have clones anyway, making it impossible to avoid this kind of immersion break.
** Doing the Unity Magic in ''4'' is cool but if you're doing it in a middle of a conversation, you're going to miss out because the dialogue box doesn't appear which is a huge hassle for players who don't understand Japanese as [[NoDubForYou this game doesn't have an English dub]]. You really have to go to the history log to check what's going on.
** Completing the battle objectives in ''4'' which is just a bonus if you want crystals for camp upgrades, growth and skill points for leveling up your character is a huge hassle most especially with the time limit objectives that require you to defeat or reach a certain character or defeat a number of officers or monsters within minutes. It's even more stressful if you're rushing to beat the time limit because some of the events are timely scripted and some characters tend to talk very long. Unless you're equipped with the right weapon or weapon elements or have a character equipped with [[GameBreaker the DLC Nemea's Lion]], you're going to fail those objectives.
* SurprisinglyImprovedSequel: Warriors Orochi 3 is probably the best Koei "Warriors" game ever made, highly rated even by reviewers who usually say they hate the repetitiveness of the franchise. For the Orochi sub-franchise especially this is significant because [=WO2=] got only middling scores at best. Why? A variety of little reasons; inclusion of many characters beyond just Samurai/Dynasty Warriors (like Ryu Hayabusa and Joan of Arc.), better combat variety between characters in general in the form of giving different charge attacks to everyone so that the only shared move between characters that use the same weapon is their basic combo, the hundreds of unique conversations in the camp between your characters, and most likely the mission progression. Instead of having a few story modes for different sides, everyone the player controls is on one side and you add more and more guys to your collection with each stage you conquer, leading to an addictive GottaCatchEmAll mentality.

[[folder: Tropes T to Z]]
* TaintedByThePreview:
** Removing Guest characters in ''Warriors Orochi 4''. Some are okay because it will let KOEI focus on the ''Dynasty'' and ''Samurai Warrior'' characters and the mystics while the guest characters fit into ''VideoGame/WarriorsAllStars''. Some are aghast that they removed what made [=WO3=] great, and removing characters have always been a reviled action which caused [=DW6=] to be looked down upon and since ''VideoGame/WarriorsAllStars'' was considered by many as not-so-stellar, they fear that they won't see the guest characters anymore. Subverted with the announcement of ''Warriors Orochi 4 Ultimate'' has Ryu Hayabusa, Achilles and Joan of Arc returning.
** Some fans are not pleased with the eight characters chosen to have Deification forms for ''[=WO4=]'' as it tends to rely on PopularityPower. The most aggravating example would be Guan Yinping and Ii Naotora who are chosen because [[PanderingToTheBase they're popular]] and [[WolverinePublicity had been used in so many promotional materials]]. And despite that these eight characters represent their faction,[[note]]Zhao Yun and Guan Yinping (Shu), Cao Pi (Wei), Lu Bu (Others), Naotora (Tokugawa), Nobunaga (Oda), Mitsunari (Toyotomi), Yukimura (Sanada)[[/note]] Shu has ''two'' characters who have Deification forms which infuriated many Wu and Jin fans, particularly with the former who felt that their favorite faction is being sidelined ''again'' by Koei, as well as those who felt other specific characters would've had a better chance [[note]]e.g. Guan Yu being actually worshiped as a god in real life, Sun Wukong achieving Buddhahood at the end of ''Journey to the West'', etc[[/note]]. It gets worse that WordOfGod mentioned that Lu Xun was supposed to have a Deification form but didn't make it in the final cut because he's a strategist, not FrontlineGeneral. However, many Wu fans find that excuse hypocritical because Mitsunari, who is also a strategist, gets a Deification form and the opening cutscene of the game shows the bracelet landing near Lu Xun's location.
* ThatOneAchievement: The "Complete every request in Gauntlet Mode." There are 80 requests and they all boil down to "Kill X number of generics, officers, famous officer, otherworld invaders, troop types, or a particular officer." The only problem is only 5 requests can be accepted at a time and very few can be stacked together, thus adding a ''huge'' degree of FakeLongevity. It's very telling when trophy progress tracking sites showcase this one as having a lower completion percentage than the one for collecting all the Mystic Weapons[[note]]It also helps that Mystic Weapons can be more-easily obtained within some of the DLC stages for Gauntlet Mode too[[/note]].
* ThatOneAttack: Many Musous can count as this, namely ones that do a lot of damage with one strike, since on higher difficulties they can very much OneHitKill you, and Musous that juggle you since the opponent has invincibility frames during this and can't be hurt by assists. While the ''Ultimate'' expansion alleviates this with midair R1 Type Actions that can be used just like midair Musou Attacks, it still depends on which character's Type Action you're executing, and what kind of attack you're getting hit by in the first place.
** Special mention goes to Himiko's musou; as a CPU it somehow does RIDICULOUS damage with DPS up one's ass in an instant (since it stunlocks you like crazy since it forces you to crumple and/or has little airborne-hit knockback). If you're caught in it despite the rest of her awkward moveset, prepare to just give up.
* ThatOneBoss: Susano'o in ''3''. Unless if your prepared you will probably get wrecked by his high damaging attacks and Musou which is nearly always a OneHitKill by that point in the game. The first time he appears, one of the allied officers even has a "do not pursue"-like warning.
** Himiko is the bane of many; for her far reaching, hard to dodge, attack that can quickly chip away health and her Musou that comes out instantly and can stunlock you as aforementioned.
* ThatOneLevel:
** ''3's'' Battle of Ueda Castle has a disproportionately high number of allies you need to protect which tend to be positioned far apart from each other, and since it's the second actual stage in the game not counting the intro level, you really don't have many leveled-up or otherwise overpowered characters to help you out, which can easily lead into one of the allies getting killed while you're busy trying to save another one. Wang Yuanji in particular seems almost suicidal; after you reach her and clear out the surrounding enemies, she wanders off by herself while you're dealing with Yuan Shao's newly-arrived forces. Next thing you know, she's alone, surrounded by five enemy officers, and on the verge of defeat on the other side of the map.
** Another level from ''3'' is Battle of Xuchang, due to how easy it is to lose if you don't know what happens beforehand: one of the main objectives is capturing Shuten Doji, and the second you kill off Dong Zhuo, he'll start fleeing. Since he's positioned very close to an escape point, it's extremely easy to fail to get to him in time before he runs away which causes you to lose the mission.
** ''1's'' Rescue at Osaka Castle from Wu's campaign is unanimously hated among players. Basically, you need to rescue Sun Jian and a few other generics, who are kept separately in each of the castle keeps. Sounds easy enough, except that the keeps are scattered all over the castle, have multiple levels and are barred by closed gates, meaning that you have to circle around all the way from one end to another just to get to them. What's more is, once Sun Jian has been rescued, you still need to escort him to the escape point, dealing with incessantly appearing ambushes and seal off ''every'' enemy entry point along the way, or else he refuses to move a single step, adding unnecessary frustrations and overall just makes the level look like a blatant Fetch Quest. Not to mention that after all the hard work you've done to get him out, Sun Jian still manages to get himself re-captured at the end of this level, essentially giving the player the finger for his efforts. To add insult to the injury, finishing the stage in Story Mode does ''not'' unlock any new character at all!
** Wu's other levels are no better, either. Half of them are filled with overly long banters that do little more than delaying scripted events (Gate opens, route cleared, etc.) thus slow down your progress, while the other half throws in egregious amounts of Escort Missions or stages in flames/filled with poisonous air that gradually eats away your health, earning lots of resentments from players.
** Battle of Itsukushima from ''Ultimate''. Most of the terrain is engulfed in poisonous fog, which drains your health down to about 30%, leaving you vulnerable to enemy attacks. And it causes more problem to allied [=NPCs=] since this makes them very vulnerable due to their reduced health, which forces you to stick close to your commander so he doesn't give you a game over. But you have ''two'' commanders; your stated initial mission is to help Fu Xi reach whoever is causing the mist, but while you're doing that Kaguya is off by herself very, very far away from you and you can't lose either of them. So you have to either race back and forth between the two (next to impossible) or blast through every officer in Fu Xi's way in record time. (And just to make things even more interesting, the enemy officers are concealed on the map by the poison mist.)
** Also from ''Ultimate'': The level to access Stage 2 of Gauntlet Mode. Not only is it the first level where you need to go through three sets of battlefields but the last one is a forced battle against Nobunaga and his forces in Honnouji. The problem is that he's all the way on the other side of the map from you and midway through, Mitsuhide appears with several officers and creates a fire while locking the doors until they are defeated, severely draining your health and wasting precious time while the Miasma level rises. Not to mention when you finally get to Nobunaga, he is surrounded by several other famous officers and is quite resilient, especially if the Miasma levels are high.
** Yet another from ''Ultimate'': Battle of Yan Province. Upon meeting up with [[spoiler: Kasumi]], the stage proceeds to push objective after objective on you. Not only do you have to protect two important generics, (both of whom are separated from you by gates; and one's on the exact opposite side of the map!) but Kiyomori and Sun Wukong will also crash the party. Even if you've defeated every enemy general at this point, the enemy reinforcements are scripted to arrive anyway and will make a beeline for the NPC farthest away from you. Plus, if Kiyomori catches up to [[spoiler: Kasumi]] ([[StupidityIstheOnlyOption which due to the planned assault, they are almost guaranteed to run into]]) and is able to say his trigger lines, you lose immediately with absolutely no warning unless you're right next to them. Oh, and your generics will probably last a grand total of one minute before warning messages herald their doom. So to recap, Enemies are targeting [=NPCs=] in your main camp and you can't stop them because of Gates making the stage linear, you have a lot of ground to cover in a limited amount of time; and an important enemy can one-shot you off-screen. This means that to win, you need to go against the conservative instincts the game has trained you to follow and blindly pull a LeeroyJenkins on Kiyomori and Wukong, hoping you can win before your [=NPCs=] kick the bucket. Hope you made an in-battle save!
* ThatOneSidequest: Getting Lu Bu on your team in ''3''. Unlike nearly every other character, which are unlocked either automatically through completion of stages; Gaiden stages; or Redux stages, Lu Bu requires you to go back to a stage, with Diao Chan, where he fights [[TheWorfEffect Nezha]]. The most reliable stage for this is one in Chapter 3. However, he is behind two strongholds that you need to beat a general to unlock, wasting precious time if the game decides to throw a lot of messages at you while you wait for the gates to open, and when you do reach him, you need to defeat Nezha before he can defeat Lu Bu. The problem? Until Diao Chan finishes a conversation with him, he is ''still aggro'd against you''! Meaning that you could very well accidentally kill Lu Bu by mistake or Nezha could kill him before Diao Chan's conversation finishes.
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: Some fans dislike the Trinity Remixes of the songs from the fourth game. While some of them are good, others sound very different and unrecognizable as if it could be mistaken for another song.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter:
** Two ''VideoGame/DynastyWarriors 9'' characters, Zhou Cang and Xin Xianying, have gotten their [=DW9=] moveset converted into a [=DW8=] moveset format (via ''VideoGame/WarriorsAllStars'' and ''VideoGame/DynastyWarriors Unleashed'') and with ''[=DW8=] Empires'', there will be some weapons from ''8'' in general that will end up unused. Yet Koei stuck with their principles to not include anyone from [=DW9=] at all. Likewise, ''VideoGame/SamuraiWarriors Spirit of Sanada'' used the same moveset as [=SW4=], but none of the characters from that game got involved. This is justified because ''[=WO4=]'' had been in development since 2016 which explains why the [=DW9=] and ''Spirit of Sanada'' characters are not going to be in the game. Then, it gets weirder that their generic NPC counterparts don't show up in the game itself. WordOfGod confirms that the expansion would not include them because they want to develop and focus on the available characters in the game.
** We never go to see the rest of the Olympians and the Norse gods, not even a cameo or flashback. Thor? Tyr? Heimdall? Frigga? Freya? Baldur? Hel? Died before or during Ragnarok. Poseidon? Hades? Apollo? Hercules? Hera? Hermes? No debut for you. Outside of her hair being mentioned as the second ingredient used to create the Deification bangles, Medusa never showed up either. At least, Gaia and Hades show up in the expansion.
** With the reveal of [[spoiler:Loki]] as one of the main antagonists of the fourth game, his backstory and characterization could have gone better. [[spoiler:Except the Ragnarok storyline is shoehorned in the last chapter which is explained by Abe Seimei. It would be interesting how Ragnarok went and how it affected Loki after being depowered by Odin. While it did explain Loki's motives of wanting revenge, it was never explained properly particularly with Odin killing his friends. Though he did mention that Freya, Tyr and possibly Thor are his comrades, his story of revenge would make more sense if they introduced his family members from Norse mythology such as his wife Sigyn who is said to be very loyal to him, his son Jormungandr who faces Thor during Ragnarok and his grandsons Hati and Skoll who are the major players of Ragnarok]].
** Not adding the ''Dynasty Warriors: Strikeforce 2'' characters (other than Cai Wenji, who debuted in that game) like Qin Shi Huangdi, Xiang Yu and Ji Man/King Mu is a missed opportunity because they are historical figures from the Zhou and Qin dynasties, considering that there were four Heian historical figures (Kiyomori, Yoshitsune, Benkei and Seimei) in ''Warriors Orochi''. Also, Xi Wangmu and her EvilCounterpart Huang Quan could serve as powerful Myatics. Likewise, for the ''Godseeker'' characters, Lei Bin and Lixia, because the latter has magic powers that suit her as a Mystic character. It also would bring a lot of interesting dynamics among the DW and SW characters.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot:
** Again, a "hit-or-miss" when it comes to how Koei handles their script writing. Despite how much effort and content the series has, even up to the third installment, some character interactions either make no sense, weren't included or could've been expanded upon outside of the final products. The characters who come from the modern day time period (e.g. the ''Dead or Alive'' characters) don't even realize they're fighting alongside historical people, nor do the said Three Kingdoms and Sengoku figures alike (along with a few others) realize their new companions are actually from the far-distant future (and not just another dimension). Ayane so far is the only one who catches on the fact that she's encountered Minamoto-no-Yoshitsune, and even said herself "I've read about you in my history books"; that point isn't ever touched upon onwards. Fortunately in the fourth game, this matter is touched upon by some characters in their camp conversation particularly with Motonari who is an avid historian and gushes upon meeting Dian Wei, Cao Cao, Lu Meng etc.
** Arguably even more stages are reused in the fourth installment's story compared to the third, as well as characters upon being recruited in certain chapters instantly getting the shaft during the plot until during the few final stages. There are even certain stages that are missing across both ''Dynasty Warriors 8'' and ''Samurai Warriors 4'' in-spite of all the recycled assets.
** Some fans felt that the selection of the eight characters who have Deification forms are for marketing and popularity purposes. While some characters have these forms due to their impact and importance in the story (such as Nobunaga, Yukimura, Lu Bu and to the lesser extent, Cao Pi and Guan Yinping), others are shoehorned for the sake of having it. Mitsunari's case makes little sense because Hideyoshi is the one who made a deal with Ares which should make him a bracelet holder just like Cao Pi who is also offered the same deal. Naotora's role is [[DemotedToExtra reduced in the last three chapters]] regardless of being a bracelet holder and despite declaring herself as Perseus' friend, the game never shows her reaction [[spoiler: of Perseus being Loki]] unlike Yinping and Yukimura who are also his friends and are distraught with the truth. Even Zhao Yun who only met the guy once after joining the coalition is saddened of this and at one point, asks him his true intent. And speaking of Zhao Yun, he's only a supporting role to Yinping's arc and doesn't do much after joining the coalition.
** The showdown between Orochi X and the original Orochi was hyped in the trailer for ''4'' but in the game itself, it met a lot of disappointment as it didn't add much to the story. Likewise, his return wasn't fully explained in the story aside from a blink-if-you-see cutscene [[spoiler:when Odin turns Shuten Doji into Orochi X and another light flies out which is hinted to be the original Orochi]]. Many players find this missed opportunity when it's revealed that the original Orochi [[spoiler:still has Yinglong's presence in him and you can only recruit him via camp upgrade which gives a possiblity to bring Yinglong back and killing him is already pointless since Da Ji and Kiyomori would still resurrect the poor guy ''again'']].
** The lack of non-canonical Deification forms for the other characters. Seems to be justified in this case as designing for all '''''170''''' characters would be a colossal nightmare. For comparison, the reason the last time ''(Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce)'' the SuperMode trope was fully implemented was only due to the roster being limited to ''Dynasty Warriors 6's'' and several OriginalGeneration characters which totals only around '''''50'''''.
** ''4'' initially appeared to be shaping up to be a three-way DivineConflict between the Greek, Norse and the Mystics (who were comprised of the Chinese/Shinto pantheons) with the human warriors caught up in middle to pick a side or form their own faction after the mess left by Orochi. Sadly when the game story was revealed, [[spoiler:Zeus was just the conflict starter and is on the side of humans while Odin is the BigBad, allowing the Greek and the Mystics to ally against him.]]
** Another issue in ''4'' happens to be each character only having a total of 2 different characters they bond with only 2 camp conversations each one. While some unique conversations not done in other installments have been done (e.g. Guan Suo and [[spoiler:Kyubi]] of all things), it seemed to be another way for Koei to cut corners in accordance to the increased roster.
* ToughActToFollow: Odin in the fourth game. While he's established as a huge threat to the heroes and has one of the most awesome movesets which also makes him the most overpowered character in the entire game, his characterization and portrayal is very flat. While his endgame [[spoiler:which is to destroy life because he wants to eliminate anything that threatens his life after surviving Ragnarok]] may justify his villainy, it comes off as very generic as he keeps acting how evil he is despite that most of his actions are done [[OffstageVillainy offscreen]] and had his agent, [[spoiler:Loki]], do his bidding. It doesn't help that you encounter and defeat him two times in the last chapter which makes [[VillainDecay all the grandeur of being a threat look like a big joke]]. In the final mission, [[AntiClimaxBoss you can easily defeat him in a few minutes]] once you have leveled up your team well and used the right weapon attributes and Sacred Treasures. In contrast to Orochi who established himself as a threat at the beginning and Tamamo [[spoiler:who is responsible for kickstarting Yinglong's downfall to Orochi]], Odin is not very compelling as a dangerous villain. A lot of players even consider Hundun, who is just a {{Superboss}}, and Zeus, who is actually one of the good guys, as a difficult opponent to beat with than Odin. At the very least, Koei has acknowledged this and announced that ''4: Ultimate'' will give more details on Odin's characterization.
* UnexpectedCharacter:
** After Zeus' and Athena's addition on the ''[=WO4=]'' roster, many fans expect that several Olympians are going to be playable with the exception of Apollo, Hermes and Poseidon who are marked as Deification forms of Zhao Yun, Mitsunari and Cao Pi respectively. Everybody were caught off guard when Perseus made an appearance, making him the first and only Greek demigod character in the roster. [[spoiler:Then, it turns out that he's not really Perseus but he's Loki]].
** While it was hinted by the producer that a Norse character would be included in the roster after several Norse mythological items were included as Sacred Treasures and Guan Yinping's Deification was based on the Norse goddess of fertility, Freya, no one expected that Odin, Zeus' Norse counterpart, would join the game. Hell, no one even expected that he is the mysterious character beside Zeus on the official ''[=WO4=]'' poster and that he is portrayed as a {{Bishonen}}.
** When it was announced that there would be another character who would have a deification form for ''4: Ultimate'', many assumed that a Wu or a Jin character would finally get one. Then, it turns out that Yang Jian, one of the new characters for the expansion, would get one despite being a Mystic himself, much to the dismay of Jin and Wu fans.
* WinBackTheCrowd: A tendency started to happen whenever ''Dynasty Warriors'' had [[TheyChangedItNowItSucks radical changes to its formula that didn't sit well with fans]], leading to a numbered ''Warriors Orochi'' installment being on the horizon - ''2'' was announced after the divisive ''Dynasty Warriors 6'', ''3'' was after ''Dynasty Warriors 7'' (while considered a step into the right direction, there were complains on the structure on the overall Kingdom Mode), while news of ''Warriors Orochi 4'' was released less than two weeks since the less-than-stellar ''Dynasty Warriors 9'' was released (note that there was no Orochi after ''8'', seeing as it's the most praised DW installment of the time). That this series retains the usual ''Warriors'' HackAndSlash elements is a reason why this {{Crossover}} is heavily favored compared to other ''Warriors'' contemporaries. Additionally, ''Warriors Orochi 4'' was also announced to cater to the fans who were not amused with the toned down crossover elements of ''VideoGame/WarriorsAllStars''.
* {{Woolseyism}}: In the Japanese version of the game, the Orochi Army's generic Demon officers are all named after famous monsters or supernatural beings from Chinese and Japanese mythology. The English version gives the generic fanged demons names of various snakes, while Gyuuki-type demons have names of minerals and Dodomeki-type demons are named after different types of spiders. Similarly, the Mystic generics in the third game are named after constellations, as opposed to Chinese and Japanese mythology figures in the original script.
** Several if not all of the "X" examples (such as the X weapons) are actually called "Shin" (true) weapons in the Japanese versions. This also includes [[spoiler:Orochi X, who's actually called "Shin" (True) Orochi.]]
** The kanji for the Wonder type in the third game actually translates to "flash", meaning that the purple typed characters were literally called the "Flash" type. However, in the original Japanese version, the type is still referred as "Wonder" via GratuitousEnglish.
** Mystics in the Asian versions of the game are also more accurately dubbed as "Hermits" or "Sages".
