!!General
* DesignatedHero: Mayerling is allegedly a good person for a noble, treating mortals with respect, but the Marcus brothers have to kill off an entire town of people he's fed on and turned into vampire slaves, and the story never really gets around to excusing that.
** In the Japanese dub of the film version, he and Charlotte talk about the incident. As Charlotte retells the story, the townspeople tried to attack them out of fear, then Meier Link lost control and killed them all in retaliation. Charlotte excuses him, but assumes the sin for herself, claiming the only reason he was even put in that position in the first place was because of their love.
* EscapistCharacter: D, an impossibly beautiful bishounen version.
* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: The series has a very prominent fanbase in North America, to the point that Bloodlust was released in America before Japan, and Resurrection is set to go through a similar process.
* GrowingTheBeard: The first novel was not very well liked, but showed some promise. The following novels began to focus on world-building, along with removing some of the more blatant cheats the Nobles used. This resulted in major improvements which made the series what it is today.
* Squick: Too many to count. One scene in Journey to the Northern Seas ranks pretty high among fans.
* SpiritualLicensee: For the longest time, the animated movies were the closest thing there was to a film adaptation of Franchise/TheDarkTower, at least until an official film adaptation was announced.
* VanillaProtagonist: D's only traits are being a black-clad vampire bishonen, an impossibly good swordsman and the host to an extravagant parasite. In comparison with many other characters, he comes across as rather unoriginal. However, while it is unknown if Kikuchi made it so in the first place or realized it along the road, it's clear that he actually exploited this to focus on side characters and world building in late entries of the franchise.

!!First movie
* BestKnownForTheFanservice: For many viewers, Vampire Hunter D was their first exposure to anime intended for a mature audience, and the shower scene involving Doris and the subsequent scene where she offers herself to D are still remembered by them.
* CompleteMonster: Count Magnus Lee is an aristocratic vampire Greater Noble feared by the local village ever since his last rampage that slew thirty villagers after he was denied his bride. A rapist who turns human women into his vampire slaves, Lee keeps them as playthings for several decades before killing them, moving on to another to alleviate his own boredom, one of these women being the mother of his only daughter Larmica, who he takes delight in taunting with this fact. When his minion Rei-Ginsei requests Lee honor his pact to turn him into a Noble, Lee simply mocks him for the request and when Rei-Ginsei rebels, brutally tortures him to death before attempting to turn Doris as his newest toy.
* EasterEgg:in the 44-45 mins of first movie among the crowd of people there is a character who bears an uncanny resemblance to Kenshiro from Anime/FistOfTheNorthStar.
* GatewaySeries: For many anime fans from the 80's and 90's, the movie was their introduction to more "mature" anime and animation in general.
* Narm: The character randomly named Greco Roman, which is played all seriously. Does he have a brother named Freestyle, for that matter?
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: Creator/SentaiFilmworks received backlash for removing the original Creator/StreamlinePictures dub from its re-release and replacing it with a new dub.
* WhatDoYouMeanItsNotForKids: Back in the 90's, the original movie was often aired on Saturday nights on Creator/CartoonNetwork, TNT, and Creator/TBS, usually in a triple feature with Robot Carnival and Twilight of the Cockroaches. This is despite the loads of blood and violence that would've made this movie more suitable for, say, Creator/AdultSwim (though in fairness, [adult swim] didn't exist until 2001). It's been speculated by Toonami and Adult Swim fans that Cartoon Network's airing of Vampire Hunter D was a test run for what would later become Toonami and Adult Swim. Ironically enough, in the blocks 10+ on-air history, Vampire Hunter D has yet to air.

!!Bloodlust
* SurprisinglyImprovedSequel: The first movie is fairly cheesy, basic and not all that distinguishable from other Gorn Gorntastic 80's movies/[=OVAs=] of the era once you get down to it. Bloodlust, however, is a lot better at atmosphere and storytelling, and the SchizoTech of the first movie meshes a lot better here, plus it has absolutely gorgeous animation.
