* AbandonShipping:
** While not as popular as [[ChildhoodFriendRomance Shoko x Haruto]], [[OppositesAttract Shoko x L-Elf]], or [[HoYay Haruto x L-Elf]], quite a few fans shipped Saki and Haruto in the first nine-and-a-half episodes of the 1st season. As soon as [[spoiler:[[WhamEpisode Episode]] [[RapeAsDrama 10]]]] finished airing, however, some fans started avoiding this ship like the plague...or at least until the next week's episode came around. And by season two, most have returned to this shipping due to later problems concerning the Shoko x Haruto shipping, and L-Elf gaining a much more popular alternative ship with Liesellote.
** Same thing for the Shoko X L-Elf ship when it's displayed how ready L-Elf is to put a bullet through her head should she get in his way.
** [[ChildhoodFriendRomance Shoko x Haruto]] took a major hit after she[[spoiler: sold out the Valvrave pilots after TheReveal of their powers.]] Did not do wonders for her fans.
* {{Adorkable}}: Haruto's polite nature and tendency to get caught in... [[AccidentalPervert unfortunate situations]] can make for some hilarious reactions.
* AngstWhatAngst: Raizo has absolutely ''no'' angst about [[spoiler: the changes and odd powers he gets upon becoming a Magius.]] In fact, he views them as a ''bonus.''
** Same with Saki after Episode 10's ending. [[spoiler: You'd expect her to be traumatized, but Haruto shows [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone a much stronger reaction]] (granted, Saki DID know Haruto could lose his sense of reason, and possibly let it go because of that, but it's still a large stretch), and in Episode 13, when Haruto is having severe fits, she actually offers that they have sex to relieve him, though he refuses.]]
* AlasPoorScrappy: [[spoiler: To Q-vier dying in the finale.]]
* {{Asspull}}: The Valvrave [[spoiler:absorbing memories from the pilot can be seen as this, because it was never foreshadowed in season 1 since Haruto never showed any visible signs of suffering amnesia. That said, in early-to-mid season two it was mentioned that Haruto's brain did start showing some deterioration, albeit at a much slower rate than Marie did, even before he had consciously lost any memories at all, so the process might have been too gradual for anyone to notice the effects at first.]]
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic:
** The openings, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zynxSanDBzg "Preserved Roses"]] and [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNE93dieQF4 "Kakumei Dualism"]], are two of the best openings of the season. But then again, what else do you expect with two duet between Music/TMRevolution '''AND''' Creator/NanaMizuki?
** There's also the first ending theme [[http://soundcloud.com/hafifi94/angela-boku-janai "Boku Janai"]] by Music/{{Angela}}. [[spoiler: It comes back as an insert song for the season finale]].
** Don't forget about the second ending theme, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUlJ38wGdYIo "Soba ni Iru yo"]] by ELISA.
** We get another one in Episode 6, [[http://pennate.tumblr.com/post/69661455149/can-you-save-my-heart-by-kanade-momoko-kakumeiki "Can you save my heart?"]] by Momoko Kanade, which starts playing during [[spoiler:Saki's SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome]].
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y41FbRNrFJs "Mother land"]] by Yuuka Nanri. It was first heard at the end of Episode 8, but it truly gained this status in Episode 21, really adding to the emotion of [[spoiler:Kyuma's HeroicSacrifice]].
** Momoko Kanade gives another with the second ending theme of Season 2, [[http://hidden-inthesound.tumblr.com/post/71368779500/akai-memories-wo-anata-ni-momoko-kanade "Akai Memories wo Anata ni"]].
** ThemeMusicPowerUp occurs ''very'' frequently in this series. And every time it does, something awesome happens.
* BaseBreakingCharacter:
** After Episode 6, reactions to Saki resulted in this due to a sequence of rash and selfish actions she takes such as abandoning her humanity without a second thought, manipulating Haruto so that she could take over his body and use his fame to boost her ''own'' fame, and leaping into the fray of battle only to get cold feet when she faced opponents who weren't easily to defeat. The outcome of her first solo fight did not help this. Afterwards, fan reaction split between those who consider her TheScrappy for the previous mentioned actions, and those who actually ''enjoyed'' watching this development unfold throughout the episode and grew to like her newly discovered character even more.
*** Ironically, season two pretty much ups her status to EnsembleDarkhorse as fans continue to [[TheWoobie feel bad for her]] for always getting screwed over in some way (imprisonment, embarrassment on national TV), and for her shipping with Haruto making a comeback.
** Episode 21 pretty much splits Shoko's fanbase after [[spoiler:selling out Haruto (and the other Valvrave pilots) and L-Elf to ARUS]]. Many former fans have reversed their positions declaring that she's crossed the MoralEventHorizon while her defenders argue that her actions were justified. During the final episodes, [[spoiler:Shoko openly cried within Unit 1's cockpit once she learned that Haruto had renounced humanity for her sake. Unfortunately, she had to keep up appearances in public and didn't let Haruto go past the hangar when he came back to the shuttle. Shoko never had the chance to personally apologize to Haruto before his death, though he did at least learn about her real regretful feelings from Pino. Shoko was also shown to be sad upon learning about his death and reflecting about it aftewards. In the end, fans remain divided over how her actions should have been addressed and there is polarization concerning how she eventually became the next Valvrave pilot. Some see that as being disappointing, escaping from her responsibilities and going against Haruto's wishes of protecting her from the curse, while others see it precisely as Shoko's way of making up for her fears and distrust by assuming Haruto's role in a period where the curse is now seen as a blessing.]]
* BrokenBase:
** The second season got hit with this hard after the airing of the last episode; split between those who thought it was a [[SurprisinglyImprovedSequel major improvement]] for toning down on the random craziness that drove viewership away throughout the first season, and its detractors who state that the second season was weaker ''because'' said craziness was what originally brought people back to continue watching the show.
** The scene showing [[spoiler:a Valvrave controlled Haruto raping Saki]] has many fans divided on whether that scene was appropriate or not. And the subsequent [[spoiler:handling of the "morning after"]] and [[spoiler:Haruto's marriage proposal]] is not going over well with people who expected a different treatment of the subject.
** The final episode has a split of its own. Either people are satisfied with the conclusion, or it was a rush-job leaving too much unanswered that a third season of material was needed. The resolution has been felt to be too forced as it ignored all the negative consequences of the characters' actions such as [[spoiler:Haruto's death]] in favor of happy events. That's not even mentioning the lack of unresolved mysteries and the epilogue scene.
** The death of [[spoiler:Haruto also got this.]] While some found the scene was well done, others saw it as unnecessary or just a cheap excuse to give the viewer a sad moment considering [[spoiler:Marie had previously survived losing all her memories once. Plus the fact his story ends on a very sad note, as he never made up with Shoko orachieved his dreams of coexisting with humans, and his biggest fear of Shoko being cursed came true.]]
* CatharsisFactor: [[spoiler: Q-vier getting killed in the finale]].
* CrossesTheLineTwice: The show goes so far in its ridiculousness and absurdity that it slides right back to understandable.
* DesignatedHero: L-Elf attempts to kill Haruto early in the series (as well as several innocent people) and later [[spoiler:shoots Marie in the face just to keep her from distracting Haruto]]. Everytime a member from the team is in problems, L-Elf won't care and in early season 2 it requires everybody's voice to convince him to save a young girl. It's amazing Haruto ends up becoming his friend.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: Cain definitely counts. See EvilIsCool below for details.
** H-Neun has also reached this status with time, being compared to [[Manga/FullmetalAlchemist Roy Mustang]] in terms of his effect on the plot. [[spoiler: A lot of fans were sad to see him bite the bullet.]]
** Akira also has fans for being an {{Adorkable}} PlayfulHacker and for staying consistently likeable.
* EvilIsCool:
** Cain as of Episodes 11 and 12 has become one of the most popular characters in the series particularly for being the first person to genuinely outsmart L-Elf in combat. The ongoing mystery regarding what the hell his character is, [[spoiler:which turned out to be a fatherly ultra-{{Badass Normal}} who was possessed by a Magius]], also helped.
** Senator "Moses" Figaro has become this almost entirely based on his famous line "Call me Moses, for I am about to part this sea of students before your very eyes?". How does he accomplish this feat? [[spoiler: WITH GUNS!]]
* EpilepticTrees: The series ends without giving us answers on who's child the unnamed Prince is, and his appearance and a [[http://31.media.tumblr.com/9200b1e3de059e1dbad7eef241be324b/tumblr_mygbpgEYIZ1shjazqo1_r3_500.png suspicious magazine article about him]] have lead many fans to guess that he's a clone made form a combination of Haruto and L-Elf's DNA.
* FanonDiscontinuity: Many fans choose to ignore what's in canon and stick to the light novel, as it offers a better closure to the most controversial parts from the anime's second season. [[http://pastebin.com/hJaPCJqD Just check it out for yourself.]]
* FanNickname: As the show careered further and further OffTheRails after initially appearing to be a generic RealRobot story, fans began to affectionately refer to it as '[[Anime/MobileSuitGundamSEED Gundam]] [[ThisIsYourPremiseOnDrugs WEED]]'. Fans also call it VVV as a shorthand ("'''V'''al'''v'''ra'''v'''e").
** Kakumeiki Valv[[spoiler:rape]] or [[spoiler: Vulvarape]] (optionally complete with "The Penetrator"), due to the events of episode 10.
** L-Elf is pronounced as Eru-Erufu.
** A-Drei's name is commonly written as "Audrey".
*** And H-Neun is known as "Hannah" or "Honey".
*** Q-Vier is called "Q-chan"
*** X-Eins is "Megan", because of his [[{{Megane}} glasses]].
** Japanese fans have a particularly cruel nickname for Aina: Fire Maiden.
** Valvrave-tan or OS-tan for the Valvrave AI Girl.
** Senator Figaro is often called "Moses" instead.
** [[spoiler: "Space Vampire Illuminati"]] for the [[spoiler: Council of 101]], Due to their OneWorldOrder ambitions.
** Misha and Liz for [[spoiler:L-elf]] and Lieselotte.
* FanPreferredCouple:
** While at first [[ChildhoodFriendRomance Haruto/Shoko]] was popular, Haruto/Saki started taking over due the former having less interactions and being [[ShipSinking rejected by the narrative]].
** [[FoeYayShipping Haruto/L-Elf]] is the FanPreferredCouple in Japan.
** Then L-elf/Shoko was also popular but the revelation of his feelings for Lieselotte resulted in major shipping.
** Needless to say the series sank almost all ships. [[spoiler: ...with the exception of the student council members, [[BetaCouple Satomi X Takahi]], who got married in the epilogue.]]
* FridgeHorror:
** [[spoiler:If the Valvrave can turn Haruto into a vampire, what else is that mecha capable of doing to its pilot? It turns him into a body snatcher!]] Also, if it doesn't accept the pilot, [[spoiler: the robot makes the person explode.]]
*** Appparently, [[spoiler: '''possess her designated pilot and use his body to attack people and rape innocent women.'']]
** The entire finale is one big BrokenAesop: [[spoiler:While Liselotte wanted Magius and humans to coexist, L-elf's actions caused a Magius genocide (though the Council of 101 were the main casualties). In the end Shoko became Valvrave 01's pilot. What was Haruto's biggest fear? Having Shoko pilot it!]]
* GeniusBonus:
** The Jioran flag and the Valvrave actually seems to allude to the legend of Yatagarasu, as explained [[http://eruharu.tumblr.com/post/50844286799/valvrave-and-mythology here.]]
** The name "Valvrave" seems to be a reference to the [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valravn Valravn]] of Danish folklore.
** It seems particularly notable that one description of the valravn is that it can take the form of a knight after consuming the heart of a child.
* HarsherInHindsight:
** All the way back in Episode 5, when Saki kisses Haruto, the Valvrave AI asks if they were having sex. [[spoiler:Guess what Haruto does to her when he's possessed by the Valvrave in Episode 10. [[MadnessMantra During the act, the AI spouts a continuous "SEX SEX SEX SEX..."]]]]
** There's also the scene where Haruto goes into vampire-mode and attacks Takahi; Saki kicks him back to his senses, and he brushes off the incident by claiming she was so sexy he couldn't control himself. [[spoiler:Aneurysmed, as above, by the rape scene.]]
** The Valvrave AI showing a rather clueless curiosity about sex in Episode 5. In Episode 10, it decides to find out.
* HesJustHiding: Considering the logic from this series it would be weird if [[spoiler:Haruto was somehow alive. Then there is Cain but in a lesser intent.]]
* HilariousInHindsight: In episode 7, the scene where A-drei and L-elf have an argument about revolution. It's basically [[Creator/JunFukuyama original]] [[Anime/CodeGeass Lelouch]] arguing with new Lelouch.
** The students' final solution to holding off ARUS and Dorssia (independence now!) is one thing, but then you have the Valvrave ''seperating their part of the country'' much like an old cartoon [[WesternAnimation/LooneyTunes with Bugs Bunny, a saw and Florida.]]
** The HopelessSuitor relationship between H-Neun and Kreimhild becomes funny when their voice actors share an official couple in [[Anime/CrossAnge another series]]. With [[Franchise/LyricalNanoha Nanoha Takamachi]] and [[Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica Sayaka Miki]] in the mix.
* HoYay:
** Haruto and L-Elf ''in spades.'' In the first scene we have L-Elf's aparent obsession with getting Haruto to serve as his right hand. At the start of the second season, we have [[spoiler: L-Elf agreeing to become Haruto's main source of runes whenever he needs to bite someone, L-Elf's promise to "use him until he has nothing left" which refers to how Haruto will eventually run out of runes and become an empty shell, but could also be taken a very different way,]] and the ending includes a sequence in which they're both free-falling and attempting to grab hold of each other. There's also episode 22's infamous "Waifu Fight," the "promise" and [[spoiler: the fact L-Elf's main love interest has kicked the bucket, and how the prince from the future seems to have L-Elf's hair and Haruto's eyes.]]
** A-drei and L-elf is quite popular in the Japanese probably due to their charged relationship.
* LikeYouWouldReallyDoIt:
** [[spoiler:Haruto getting stabbed and shot to death in the stinger. You didn't ''really'' think he'd stay dead, did you?]]
** [[spoiler:Also, Shouko.]] Though, considering this writer's [[Anime/CodeGeass previous]] [[Anime/GuiltyCrown works]], this one was actually somewhat believable.
* LesYay: Marie fondling her teachers boobs.
* MemeticBadass: Cain, [[spoiler:for repeatedly humiliating former MemeticBadass L-Elf.]]
* MemeticMutation: [[Memes/ValvraveTheLiberator Has its own page.]]
* MoralEventHorizon:
** It's not hard to lose respect for the Valvrave's OS after Episode 10. [[spoiler:After all, the machine possessed Haruto and ultimately had him rape Saki, a girl who already went through enough in her life and, until that episode, was pining for the guy.]]
** Figaro crosses it when he [[spoiler:tries to abandon JIOR with Haruto captive]].
** Multiple members of Dorssia Empire cross it almost everytime their appear, [[spoiler:especially when they use forbidden poison gas against unarmed students in Episode 12.]]
** [[spoiler:L-Elf gets his moment of crossing when he shoots Marie just because she was delaying the mission and was about to discover the secret of the Kamitsuki.]]
** [[spoiler:The ARUS president ordering the massacre of students upon the reveal of Haruto and the others being Magius.]]
** [[spoiler:Shoko selling out Haruto and L-Elf to ARUS partly because of the reveal that he was a Kamitsuki and partly because he forgot their childhood promise.]]
* {{Narm}}: Kyuma's screaming in anger in episode 8 wasn't originally narmy, but one group's subtitles of that scene--translating "chickishou" as [[PrecisionFStrike "fuck"]]--and also having the font gradually increase in size as he screamed made it into this.
* OvershadowedByControversy: Aside from plot writing and characterization issues, many viewers who watched Valvrave mostly remember this series [[spoiler:for it's infamous rape scene]].
* PanderingToTheBase: The [[http://www.valvrave.com/special/#s7 five most popular characters]] survived in the finale while the others aren't so lucky.
* TheScrappy: Q-Vier is one of the least liked characters, no doubt thanks to his lack of any sort of HiddenDepths compared to the other Karlstein Graduates and [[spoiler: his direct and/or indirect murders of Yamada, Aina, and Liselotte.]]
* SecondSeasonDownfall: More of a first season downfall, but WordOfGod once confirmed that they wanted this series to go on for many seasons. However, due to how controversial the first season was, the series took a massive hit rating-wise, and had to conclude much earlier than was originally planned when the second season came around.
* SoBadItsGood: Enthusiastically described early in its run as the 'best worst anime' of 2013. [[{{Camp}} There are enough moments of self-awareness]] [[StealthParody to suggest that this may be entirely intentional.]]
* ShipsThatPassInTheNight: Despite the former being the arguable reason for [[spoiler: her public execution]], and that they don't really seem to have any sort of friendship with each other, A-Drei x Saki is surprisingly popular amongst some fans.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter:
** Many viewers were disappointed with the fact that [[spoiler: Liesellote was killed so suddenly after all the build up for her introduction. Shippers actually appreciated for how she made L-Elf more likable and appeared in lots of fanarts.]]
** Shoko got a lot of backlash as a result of her questionable actions in the second season. Most FixFics tend to completely change this.
** Relatedly, many were upset at Saki’s lesser plot importance in the second half, with her being separated from the main heroes for several episodes being a huge criticism of it.
** X-Eins. [[spoiler:As someone who ''finally'' learns the truth about Cain's secret and H-Neun's death, a majority of fans feel that he got the short end of the stick regarding screen-time/importance due to suddenly getting killed off in the series finale and not having any payoff for his character. At this point, he had every reason to hate Cain due to being seen as a heroic figure to X-Eins that turns out to be an EvilMentor, and for being the cause of one of his companions (H-Neun) dying.]]
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: After [[NonIndicativeFirstEpisode Episode 1]], you might be thinking that the show, at least in the best case scenario, could be something like ''Manga/{{Bokurano}}'' meets ''[[spoiler: Manga/{{Hellsing}}]]'' [[JustForFun/RecycledInSpace in a]] ''Franchise/{{Gundam}}'' [[JustForFun/RecycledInSpace setting]]. But the idea of seeing a straightforward exploration of that potential was apparently ditched with the second episode, and the series puts more of an emphasis on the resulting mess of {{Narm}}tastic anime cliches and plot twists derived from that mix of elements.
* TooBleakStoppedCaring: Some viewers are finding it increasingly hard to care about the series because the majority of characters are either {{Jerk Ass}}es, TooDumbToLive or is TooGoodForThisSinfulEarth. The episode where [[spoiler:the majority of the Module 77 students are massacred]] essentially turns the series into a ShaggyDogStory, and the 200 year timeskip shows certain characters' survival as a ForegoneConclusion.
* VanillaProtagonist: Haruto is a fairly normal character without any outstanding quirks compare to other characters.
* SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome: The Valvrave battles are very well-animated.
* TheWoobie:
** Haruto. The series starts with him [[spoiler:becoming a Magius, in attempt to avenge Shoko]]. Then, one by one, several of his friends and classmates undergo the same transformation, despite his desire to be the only one so cursed. And then his [[spoiler:urge to attack people culminates in VVV-tan taking control of his mind and making him rape Saki, which he most assuredly had no desire to do.]]
** [[BaseBreakingCharacter Mixed reactions from viewers aside,]] Saki easily qualifies as this. [[spoiler:Already coming from a family of abusive parents, she's trying her hardest to leave her past behind her. Things get a ''whole'' lot worse for the poor girl in Episode 10, when Haruto, a boy she's been interested in for much of the first season, rapes her. Regardless of your position on Saki, '''no one''' should have to suffer the horror of being raped. '''NO ONE.''']] And while there's a further BrokenBase regarding that last part due to her [[AngstWhatAngst extremely downplayed reaction to what happened]], that kind of reaction does indeed happen in Real Life to some [[spoiler:rape victims, especially those with a long history of abuse in their lives (which Saki qualifies), or who come from cultures where rape is seldom seen as "wrong." Considering how the Jior students reacted to Akira's back story of being bullied and mentioned that "she brought it on herself," Saki may well have both]]. Top all that off with [[spoiler:being stabbed through the heart by Cain in order to out the Valvrave pilots as immortal beings]] in the second season, and it sure sucks to be Saki.
** Shoko gets quite a few woobie points after [[spoiler: having to decide between giving up the Valvraves in order to save her father and residents of module 77's families (but abandoning the rest of Jior), or letting him die so they can make it to the moon and continue to fight.]] In the end, [[spoiler: he's killed when Haruto wipes out the much of the Dorssian fleets, unaware of how Shoko's father was on one of the them.]] Nobody blamed her when she broke down sobbing.
** Akira warrants a mention as well, [[spoiler:mainly due to her severe social anxiety, which was brought on by some horrendous past bullying]]. Later, episode 14 reveals that [[spoiler:the bullying came about as a result of being shamed and mistreated by '''everyone''' because she was guilty of hacking into the network of a prestigious school in order to obtain the questions for its entrance exam. It was a good-intentioned, but misguided attempt to help her brother gain passage into said school, as he was severely exhausted and nearing a mental breakdown from studying for the test, all thanks to the extreme pressure their parents were putting on him to get into the best school possible. The fact Satomi refused to acknowledge Akira had done this for his sake broke her, and then how he kept turning a blind eye to her bullying despite repeatedly reaching out to him for his help broke her even more.]]
