* BaseBreakingCharacter: Sette. Fans either think she's adorable, troubled, or go on long tirades about how she ruins the entire comic.
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: The (non-voiced since it's a comic) musical number during the introduction of the Deadly Nevergreen. A second one occurs later on during a flashback to Duane's soldier days when he was alive.
* CargoShip: [[http://files-cdn.formspring.me/photos/20111104/n4eb3655745a91.jpg Sette/Money.]]
* CompleteMonster: [[FatBastard Arctrit Ramora]], [[OnlyKnownByTheirNickname known almost exclusively as Starfish]], is the leader of the Red Berry Boys, a criminal gang that kidnaps people, vivisects them, and replaces their organs with First Silver, which they then smuggle across the country. The procedure leaves their victims alive, but [[AndIMustScream in a constant state of agony]], the Silver feeding off their pain and gradually turning them into a gigantic monstrosity. Since Starfish is paid by the body, not by the amount of Silver in each body, [[WouldHurtAChild he targets children for the procedure]] to stretch out his supply and weasel extra money out of his employers. Starfish has no empathy for anyone, including his own men. When one of them is grievously injured and begs for help, Starfish simply smiles and caves in the man's skull. After Quigley [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness outlives his usefulness]], Starfish goes back on his promise to release his child captives, tries to have Quigley drowned while [[ForcedToWatch forcing the man's son, Matty, to watch]], and states Matty will undergo the procedure as well. Starfish is also a child molester, and, after knifing a prostitute who interferes, attempts to kidnap the seemingly ageless child protagonist, Sette, as a SexSlave for himself.
* CreatorsPet: [[http://ask.fm/AshleyCope/answer/35147770466 The author discusses the trope on their ask blog,]] regarding Sette and Murkoph.
-->"If you come into Unsounded thinking I want you to forgive Sette her foibles because she's so cute and because I've stuck her in the lead, you got the wrong idea. But it's my fault if they get the wrong idea 'cause I'm the one givin' out ideas! Some people just can't enjoy a heroine with the issues that Sette has. And I absolutely get that. Funnily enough people have short memories and when Murk was introduced it's like they thought here's another morally reprehensible character that Glass fatuously expects us to adore. But no, dorks, he's just a morally reprehensible character."
* EnsembleDarkhorse:
** Duane's brother, Lemuel. So far he has only appeared in one chapter for two relatively short scenes, but readers have already started swooning over him and speculating about his role in the plot. It's possible that his similar appearance to Murkoph might have something to do with it. In fact, when the Duane & Sette formspring was converted into a questionnaire for Duane when he was alive, someone quickly took the opportunity to [[http://www.formspring.me/DuaneAndSette/q/486297709343428375 propose to Lemuel.]]
** In chapter 14, Captain Claggert quickly became very well liked. While at the start of the chapter he seems to be just another bigot towards the Gold caste that Duane and Lemuel are a part of -- and a FatBastard to boot -- after they all fall into a cavern, he reveals himself to be something of a ReasonableAuthorityFigure who helps Duane get his shit together, and later helps Duane get an important position in another caster unit. In supplementary commentary, the author revealed that upon learning of Duane's assassination, he was outraged and immediately returned to the capital to help in the search for Duane's assassins, and was very unhappy to learn that they had been apprehended and executed before he arrived. The fact that he's [[ComicBookFantasyCasting a dead ringer visually]] for [[WebVideo/RedLetterMedia Mike Stoklasa]] certainly doesn't hurt.
* FanNickname:
** Due to Ruck melting, messing around with, and devouring minds the fandom has taken to calling him "skull pilot".
** The First Silver monster gets called the [[PunnyName Seelver]], after its appearance as a giant eel.
*** Its second form [[spoiler:after fusing with Anadyne]] is sometimes called the "[[spoiler:Anabomination]]".
** Delicieu gets referred to as a lot of things, though Deli Meat is popular.
** Two Crescian wrights in Grenzlan got termed Cole and Gate for the color of their pymary being reminicent of a certain toothpaste. They're unlikely to get official names since [[spoiler:they were quickly set alight by Lemuel]].
** [[spoiler:Starfish]]'s corpse, reanimated by the Silver weapon, was called Silverfish by a fan, only for Ashley to reveal that's what she'd used in the script as well.
** "Bell-end" is starting to pick up steam with the more heinous acts General Bell commits and the more smug he gets.
* {{Hilarious in Hindsight}}: See BrickJoke on the main page. Now read that scene again. Imagine what it must seem to Duane -- it's like having a swordfight with someone, and all of a sudden they pull out a dildo and act like it's a super-powerful secret weapon.
* IronWoobie: Duane is a devout member of a religion that believes that reanimated dead are the most absolute form of degradation imaginable and are irrevocably damned. He believes this completely and thinks that his God and nature have both rejected him, yet still keeps the faith and makes a point of being a decent person. The fans don't just eat it up, they would completely disregard his being a ragdoll arrangement of stitches, leather, bones, and rotten meat to smother him with hugs if they could manage it.
-->"But of course the day is not dark, and the future is bright and the past is a pleasant warmth behind me, so what a foolish thing to ask."
* MisaimedFandom: A number of readers were upset by Duane's CharacterDevelopment in chapter 16 that pushed him away from his [[NobleBigot less]] [[TheFundamentalist pleasant]] attributes, and flooded the author's blog with comments disagreeing that his previous actions were hypocritical or immoral. The story as a whole is ''very'' blatant about its criticisms of nationalism and moral hypocrisy, so this outpouring was surprising to many people.
* MoralEventHorizon:
** Starfish crosses the line when he decides to use children for his procedure just so that he can earn extra money.
** General Bell crosses it when he [[spoiler:puts the town of Ethelmik to the sword so he can smuggle the First Silver to Alderode's capital in a bid to destroy it.]]
** For many readers, [[spoiler:Lemuel]] of all people managed to cross it with chapter 16. [[spoiler:At first he treats Duane horribly upon their first meeting in the 6 years since Duane fled Alderode, calls him a damned creature, reveals that the company of Aldish soldiers he is with is there to rape and pillage a shrine full of children (with Lemuel just being the pilot who ferries them in) with a back of plan that essentially melts the entire shrine down with everyone inside it. After revealing this, he tells Duane that it would be best for everyone if Duane simply lay down and let himself be killed along with everyone else. ''Then'' in an attempt to stop Lemuel from destroying the shrine, Duane realizes that Lemuel's copilot is in fact Mikaila, the daughter he thought had died the night he died (at Lemuel's insistence). Duane manages to put everything together (that Lemuel orchestrated Mikaila being with Duane the night he was assassinated, that Lemuel was in charge of the patrols that night and was responsible for no one being around to help Duane, and that Lemuel was able to get Duane expensive pymaric eyes shockingly fast for someone of Lemuel's status) seconds before Lemuel cuts his head off. And then to twist the knife, the very next page Mikaila hugs Lemuel, calls him papa, and (not realizing that the man Lemuel just decapitated was her father) calls Duane a madman.]]
* RonTheDeathEater: Miraculously enough, (and major spoilers), [[spoiler:''Mikaila'']] got hit with this of all people [[spoiler:during her first appearance in the current day story. A portion of the fanbase began to seriously dislike Mikaila for A:being involved in an Aldish raid that would involve the raping and pillaging of a Crescian shrine full of young girls, B:destroying Uaid and nearly killing Matty, and C:calling Lemuel, a man responsible for her father Duane's death, Papa. This is ignoring that A:she was little more than an assistant pilot for Lemuel's vliegeng. She had literally no control over what senior ranked soldiers chose to do and the mission was originally just supposed to be for scouting and nothing more, B:she didn't know anything about Uaid other than that he (presumably "it" to her) was a prototype weapon created by Aldish rebels and owned by a known traitor, and she almost certainly didn't even know who Matty was, and C:Mikaila has zero idea that Lemuel was even involved in her father's death, so she likely took to having a father figure to fill in for Duane, especially if said father figure encouraged her less socially acceptable desires(i.e. being more than a house wife).]]
* {{Squick}}:
** You can ''see [[spoiler:Ephsephin]]'s mashed brains'' stuck to the [[GrievousBottleyHarm wine bottle]] used to beat him to death in [[http://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/comic/ch06/ch06_54.html this]] page.
** After Sette [[spoiler:tricks Turas into going into Duane's room,]] we see the aftermath of locking a guy in a room with a rabid attack zombie. It ain't pretty.
** '''''[[http://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/comic/ch08/ch08_39.html That hand.]]''''' This one gleefully skips across {{Squick}} and lands ''deep'' in NauseaFuel territory. Even better: [[http://glassshard.tumblr.com/post/52843484329/see-the-untouched-flats-above-it-i-always-colour the author posted a closeup of that panel a few months before it appeared in the comic.]] Not for the faint of stomach. Shortly after its comic page was posted, Cope actually ''[[http://glassshard.tumblr.com/post/68288483943/glassshard-see-the-untouched-flats-above-it-i reposted the blog entry]]'' because "[[TrollingCreator You needed a larger view of this in your life.]]" While it is undoubtedly overshadowed by '''''that hand''''', the top panel of that page is no walk in the park either. The Aldish sure do enjoy their ColdBloodedTorture.
** [[http://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/comic/ch10/ch10_41.html Starfish subjects]] Sette to an IHaveYouNowMyPretty, which manages to be even more disturbing than most stuff on here already because of the very real possibility of it happening to someone in real life.
** [[http://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/comic/ch10/ch10_90.html In this strip, (which was enough to sicken even the hardened beta reader, so fair warning)]] while fighting off Murkoph in the Khert, Duane gets fed up and [[spoiler: ''RIPS MURKOPH'S SKIN OFF.'' And when we say skin, we mean ''everything'' covering his upper torso, including his scalp.]]
** Seeing [[spoiler:Stockyard]] strung up [[http://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/comic/ch10/ch10_94.html solely by the skin of his hands]] is pretty viscerally unsettling, especially when he tries to move.
** Duane has a fever dream where his upper torso bursts open in a river, causing hundreds of bugs to spew out and drown.
** The details of Bastion's sexual abuse under Delicieu are relegated to [[AllThereInTheManual the author Q&A blog]]; which is a good thing, because they are ''horrifying''.
--->When he first went to study and room with Maur after Delicieu’s death, he assumed Maur would require sexual service the same as his last master. He offered himself the first night and scared the socks off his new teacher.
** Lady Ilganyag apparently has full sexual control over her Black Tongues, and has a very poor understanding of consent. The author depicted this in a short story that was deemed so explicit it had to be moved from Tumblr to Patreon.
* TooBleakStoppedCaring: Chapter 15 portrays our two protagonists Duane and Sette at their least sympathetic due to indulging in their worst impulses. Duane is once again wallowing in his contempt for Cresce and the Gefendur, nearly kills Mistress Lori, the woman in charge of the shrine (though she herself is also kind of unsympathetic due to her involvement with secret Crescian experiments on the waterwomen children of the river), assaults a teenager, is completely blind to his hypocrisy and disturbing behavior as he attempts to convince the twins to abandon the shrine, and proceeds to apparently lose his mind as he rips an owl to shreds with his bare teeth. And his actions are partially influenced by Sette, who for the first time uses the amulet she was given by Bastion to truly mind control Duane repeatedly into doing what she wants for selfish (if somewhat sympathetic) reasons, culminating in her directing Duane to make a fool of himself on stage to throw a wrench in the Gefendur Creation play dressed up as Ssael. She also poisoned another girl at the shrine so that her new friend Sara could play her role opposite of Sette who got the other major role. By the end of the chapter, one can only imagine how the two will rebuild relationships with all the people they've alienated, much less with each other. That is if they even can.
* TrollingCreator:
** Ashley loves to claim that she's going to kill off [[CheerfulChild Matty]] (and, more recently, Quigley) next update/chapter/etc. However, he's still alive and well...thus far.
--->"I’ve long planned on gruesomely killing off Matty but maybe I should move his date of execution up. PULL YOUR WEIGHT, BOY."
** Years before it was revealed in the comic, an anonymous poster on [[ImageBoards /co/]] correctly guessed that [[spoiler:Mikaila]] was responsible for Bastion's injuries after [[spoiler:assassinating Duane]]. [[https://unsoundedcomic.tumblr.com/post/673730730976804864/ill-have-you-know-that-unless-it-was-you-under That was Ashley.]]
--->"Now you have to pay attention to every insane post made in the /co/ threads ‘cause you just never know~"
* ViewerGenderConfusion: Timofey is actually a guy, despite certainly looking like a CuteGhostGirl. That he's a [[spoiler:pymaric construct crafted from First Light by Bastion, and modeled on his sister]] might contribute to the confusion.
%%* TheWoobie:
%%** Everyone feels sorry for Cara.
%%** Jivi.
%%** Matty, later on.
%%** Saya went down.
%%** Also, Ruffles.
