* AudienceAlienatingEra: Almost universally agreed to be this for the Ultimate Universe, due to taking DarkerAndEdgier up to eleven and killing off several characters.
* CatharsisFactor: After causing worldwide destruction and the deaths of many beloved characters, nobody complained when Magneto dies courtesy of Cyclops burning his head off. It was even more cathartic in its day if you had been following ''ComicBook/UltimateXMen'', as he has had his own share of terrible crimes during that run.
* HarsherInHindsight: Thing kills Dr. Doom because he feels Reed doesn’t have it in him to do it. Years later, this exact Reed becomes a genocidal villain that even manages to escape the Ultimate Universe and terrorize the mainstream Marvel Universe.
* {{Narm}}:
** The random deaths, all gory, become [[BloodyHilarious sort of funny]] after a while.
** One of Wolverine's lines to Magneto during their fight is the utterly ridiculous, "I got news for you -- if you're God, then God is dead!"
** Probably the crowner is the moment where Doctor Doom demands to know how the Thing managed to enter ''through an open door''.
* NarmCharm: Captain America showing up with no explanation even from himself to help Thor take on Hela's army of the living dead because [[SugarWiki/MomentofAwesome we get to see Captain America and Thor take on Hela's army of the living dead.]]
* OlderThanTheyThink: Magneto's evil plan is to screw with the Earth's magnetic poles? The [[ComicBook/NewXMen last time]] he thought of this, he was under the heavy influence of drugs... which were actually the essence of a sentient bacteria... while apparently not actually being Magneto but a Chinese mutant with a star for a brain. Look, just don't have Magneto mess around with the planet's magnetic poles.
* OvershadowedByControversy: Creator/JephLoeb's decades-long career was overshadowed by a highly visible CreatorBreakdown he underwent in the late 2000s following the sudden death of his son. Not only did the overall quality of his writing take a hit during this period, but his stories would frequently deal with disturbing topics such as incest and display a level of violence unusual for the superhero genre. In particular, he wrote ''ComicBook/TheUltimates3'', which was not up to the quality of the first two miniseries written by Creator/MarkMillar. It was followed by this story, a CrisisCrossover that killed half the cast of the ComicBook/UltimateMarvel universe, mostly in gruesome ways. He has written several other comics: ''ComicBook/TheLongHalloween'' (two Eisner Awards), ''ComicBook/DarkVictory'' (one Eisner Award), ''ComicBook/SupermanForAllSeasons'' (two Eisner nominations, one Wizard Fan Award), ''ComicBook/BatmanHush'', ''[[ComicBook/TheDeathOfCaptainAmerica Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America]]'', etc. He also created the characters ComicBook/XMan, ComicBook/RedHulk, Sam Alexander and Jimmy Hudson, all of whom, although divisive, have been fairly prominent at times. And even in the Ultimate line, he also wrote follow-up work such as ''New Ultimates''. Still, for many fans he's the one who ruined the Ultimate line with ''Ultimatum'', and nothing else. Eventually, he decided to work in TV full-time.
* SignatureScene: The Blob eating the Wasp, graphically biting flesh out of her ribcage while muttering "tastes like chicken" in a graphic splash page is the image by which ''Ultimatum'' became notorious and proverbial.
* {{Squick}}: The scene of Blob eating the Wasp's corpse. It was universally agreed to be incredibly tasteless.
* TooBleakStoppedCaring: The comic was so bleak that many readers either swore off the Ultimate Marvel continuity or were discouraged from getting into it. It doesn't help that an interlude features a dead pool ([[ComicBook/{{Deadpool}} not that one]]) suggesting the whole thing is nothing to be concerned about.
* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: Sue Storm calling Reed out on abandoning her is meant to be a WhatTheHellHero moment calling Reed out for being too logical and not caring for his loved ones. The reason Reed abandoned her was to ''save the entire world'', making Sue come across as extremely narcissistic to believe that Reed should prioritize her over the world.
* TheUntwist: The author of the great flood is only revealed at the end of the first issue. However, the "Road to Ultimatum" comics had already been building that Magneto intended to enact a vengeance against everyone.
