* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic:
** "Green Onions" by Booker T. and the M.G.'s, which plays when the sandlot boys have their confrontation with the Little Leaguers.
** "This Magic Moment" coming on at the exact moment Squints locks lips with Wendy, followed by him getting thrown out on his butt, makes the moment both awesome and hilarious (if a little cringey).
** Ray Charles's "America the Beautiful" really makes the Independence Day fireworks scene pop.
** "Wipeout" during the first half of the chase scene between the Beast and Benny.
** The Champs' "Tequila" serves as a jamming distraction from the otherwise [[{{Squick}} disgusting]] carnival scene.
** "Spirit in the Sky" in ''The Sandlot 2'' when the model rocket lands in the yard.
** "Centerfield" and "Ballroom Blitz" in ''The Sandlot 3: Heading Home.''
* CriticalDissonance: Despite being a major CultClassic and a favorite of many, the film received pretty mixed reviews, with the Website/RottenTomatoes score very slowly creeping to a 63% fresh rating. (For comparison, the audience score is 89%.)
* EnsembleDarkhorse:
** Ham is one of the best-remembered characters in the movie, despite having relatively little screen time. It helps that he says some of the most meme-tastic lines in the film (see MemeticMutation and SignatureScene).
** Squints is very popular amongst the fans, too, even though he features in only two scenes.
* HarsherInHindsight:
** At the end of the film, Bertram is revealed as getting into the 60s and no one saw him again. Bertram's actor, Grant Gelt's final acting credit was for a made-for-TV movie called ''The Sixties''.
** Smalls' mother telling him to get into trouble during the summer (not too much, but some) becomes not so funny after the actor who played Smalls got arrested 20 years later.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** Ham is said to have become a professional wrestler as an adult, fast forward 20 years later after the movie came out and his actor Patrick Renna plays a FanBoy in ''Series/GLOW2017'', which itself takes place some 20 years after the setting of the first film.
** Wendy ends up marrying the much younger Squints in the future. Later her actress, Marley Shelton makes an appearance on ''Series/MadMen'' and sucks face with a younger man with her friend Joan Holloway Harris.
* IdiotBall: Even not knowing who Babe Ruth was or that they would lose the ball over the fence (which was something the kids tried to avoid), Scott borrowing the baseball placed prominently in his stepfather's trophy room, a stepfather he's already had a hard time getting along with and who just made him man of the house, still seems like a surprisingly reckless move for someone as cautious and intelligent as Scott. ''Especially'' since he could've just used the ball he and his stepfather used earlier to try to play catch. In his defense, he was so excited to make a (literal) baseball teams worth of friends after being relocated to the West Coast, he wanted to pay back their kindness. He may have forgotten about the ball he used when playing catch and just remembered the prominent one Bill had.
* JustHereForGodzilla: The presence of a decently athletic and fleshed-out group of girl players is one of the few parts of the sequel that distinguishes it from being a ''complete'' rehash of the original and tends to be unreservedly complimented.
* MemeticMutation:
** "[[PunctuatedForEmphasis FOR-E-VER. FOR--E--VER.]] ''[[RuleOfThree FOR---E---VER."]]''
** "You're KILLING me, Smalls!"
** The how to build some s'mores scene.
* NauseaFuel: [[spoiler:[[VomitChainReaction The fair scene]], [[VomitIndiscretionShot in all its glory]].]] Surprisingly works quite well as AnAesop.
* NightmareFuel: The Beast's backstory, if taken at face value, is unsettling for an adult and downright pants-ruiningly terrifying for a kid. [[spoiler: Of course, it's heavily implied by the end that the backstory had been warped and exaggerated over the years.]]
* OneSceneWonder: Creator/JamesEarlJones as [[spoiler:Mr. Mertle, the owner of the junkyard and Hercules aka "The Beast".]]
* SignatureScene:
** The standoff between the Sandlot kids and their rival team.
--->'''Ham:''' You play ball like a girl!
** The chase scene with Benny and the Beast.
--->'''Benny:''' Sandlot! Sandlot! Sandlot!
** The how you build some s'mores scene.
--->'''Ham:''' You're killing me Smalls!
* SpecialEffectFailure:
** The cutaway shots of fireworks during the Fourth of July game are stretched horizontally (the fireworks appear oblong), meaning non-anamorphic stock footage was spliced into the film.
** Some of the effects used on the ball are glaringly digital and stand out to the rest of the film's 1960s aesthetic.
** The animatronics used in many scenes for The Beast don't hold up particularly well. Though in a bit of FridgeBrilliance that may make them work even work ''better'' considering his mythic status among the kids.
* SpiritualSuccessor:
** You could say this is ''Film/AChristmasStory'' for the summer months.
** You could also say this was ''Film/FieldOfDreams'' for kids. It even shares two of the same actors - Creator/JamesEarlJones and Creator/ArtLaFleur - along with two assistant directors.
* SurprisinglyImprovedSequel: ''Heading Home'' was better received than ''The Sandlot 2'', but still not as well as ''The Sandlot''. It helps that the movie has a more original story while the second movie was more of a retelling of the original movie with some changes here and there.
* ValuesDissonance: Squints tricks Wendy the life guard into giving him mouth-to-mouth and forcefully homes her head down so he can kiss her. He's portrayed as ''cool'' for it, the entire scene is PlayedForLaughs, and Wendy is depicted as initially reacting appropriately yet afterwards is shown and said to have always smiled at him (giving the implication that she liked what he did and is okay with his unhealthily realised attraction) and in the ending narration Squints is said to have gotten married to and have 9 kids with the girl whom he did this to. This would be much harder to get by with modern audiences, particularly in the post-[=MeToo=] era where sexual harassment and molestation are taken far more seriously.
* VindicatedByHistory: When the film was originally released, it received mixed reviews and made a modest box office profit. Nowadays, it's considered to be both a classic family film and one of the greatest baseball movies of all-time, with many positively comparing how the film captures the spirit of summer vacation/playing baseball as kid to how ''Film/AChristmasStory'' did it for Christmas. 25 years after its release, 20 Major League Baseball teams had a "Sandlot" night where they hosted the cast members, handed out merchandise such as t-shirts or bobbleheads, and celebrated the film's lasting legacy.
