* AccidentalAesop:
** Penny and Dijonay's friendship shows that sometimes, you're only friends with someone because of inertia, proximity, or convenience. The first episode establishes that Dijonay and Penny were friends for years beforehand, despite Suga Mama warning Penny about Dijonay being a bad influence. The same somewhat goes for [=LaCieniga=], as despite the fact they can’t stand each other, she’s still a part of Penny’s friend group, due in part to being friends with Dijonay when they were little and because Penny and [=LaCieniga's=] parents are best friends, and the former was essentially forced to be nice to her.
** The treatment of Oscar and Penny can also be another aesop: Life's not fair, some people are indeed a ButtMonkey in real life. And if [[TheDogBitesBack they stand up for themselves?]] [[HardTruthAesop They will be punished for it.]]
* {{Adorkable}}:
** Zoe with her shyness, geeky nature, and nerd glasses.
** Michael has his moments. He is soft spoken and awkward, in a very adorable way nonetheless.
* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: Quite a bit:
** Suga Mama's obvious [[TheUnfavorite mistreatment of Oscar]] has been interpreted as her thinking she screwed up with Bobby and is riding Oscar harder so he becomes more successful. Considering that Oscar has a business, a wife, family and children that love him unconditionally compared to her other son, this could hold water.
** Suga Mama being one of the few people consistently nice to Penny despite flat out abusive towards Oscar has been interpreted as [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone her trying to be a better grandmother to Penny, Bebe, and Cece than she was a mother to Oscar]]. This is surprisingly TruthInTelevision.
** Does Papi truly not like Suga Mama or is he just put out by her romantic intentions? He has been seen to willingly spend time with her and most of his snarking usually comes out in response to her flirting.
** Some believe that the Gross Sisters are butch lesbians, due to how gruff and tomboyish they are. It helps that in one episode, Olei is implied to have feelings for Penny.
** Many believe [=LaCieniga's=] treatment of Penny is out of jealousy and wanting to be like her, in spite of having a more luxurious lifestyle.
* {{Anvilicious}}: '''Quite''' a few episodes, but it ''is'' from the Disney Channel so it's expected. Although a known episode that forced the message hard was "E-Z Jackster" which was an obvious attempt to enforce DigitalPiracyIsEvil, reaching {{Narm}} levels considering its attempts to compare it to ''Film/TheMatrix'' of all things.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic:
** The [[https://youtu.be/YH0o-zofRsA theme song]] is ''legendarily'' catchy, and fondly remembered by those who grew up with the series.
** LDPZ's hit song "[[https://youtu.be/pj9FL-RnsJ0 We Are Best Friends]]" and Penné's solo song "[[https://youtu.be/xed5pc0qZ38 It's All About Me]]".
** Some of the background music, like the chase score in "Enter the Bullies"
** Suga Mama's [[https://youtu.be/ZjE-lCo95kI rendition]] of "[[Theatre/TheWiz Believe in Yourself]]" in "Hmm... Tastes Like..."
** Dr. Carver's at once bombastic and hilarious VillainSong in the movie. [[https://youtu.be/1aQmd8E7BX8 Shown here.]]
** Any song performed by LPDZ.
** Bobby's So Dysfunctional
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Q815zu-eH4 "The Legend of Johnny Lovely"]], as sung by Papi.
** This show actually used Buckwheat Boyz's "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcIExDJ9hoo Peanut Butter Jelly Time]]" ''before'' it became associated with the Dancing Banana or ''WesternAnimation/FamilyGuy''!
* BaseBreakingCharacter:
** Wizard Kelly counts for his callousness and jerkass attitude. He also gains pleasure from bullying Oscar for his failure to win the basketball game he played against him. However, some people find his dialect too funny for him to be completely unlikable.
** Zoey and Sticky. Depending on who you ask, they are Penny's only true friends or they are as fake as Dijonay and [=LaCienega=] (a good example would be that one episode where Cece and Bebe, Penny's siblings, grew up into teens and Zoey and Sticky, as well as Dijonay and [=LaCienega=], abandoned her to hang out with them, and even tease her about it). However, they aren't as hated, especially Zoey due to her [[TheWoobie Woobie]] status.
** Suga Mama. Some fans find her hilarious while loving the fact that she is a good grandmother to her three grandchildren. Other fans, however, find her to be too abusive and mean (towards her son Oscar) to be likable as a character.
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment:
** Al Roker melting ala [[Film/TheWizardofOz The Wicked Witch of the West]] in "Tween Town" was a bit out of left field to say the least.
** The last part of the TerribleIntervieweesMontage in "There's Something About Rene" had a woman who seemed to know what she was doing and talked about how much she loved babysitting, only to say "And I love YOU!" and then [[ExorcistHead turn her head around a lot]] while [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} generally acting like a maniac]], followed by Trudy saying "Next!" This is never brought up by anyone ever again.
** "Tiger Whisperer" features a scene where Penny and Trudy are in a car and come across Sunset and [=LaCienega=], since it is bring-your-daughter-to-work day for Sunset. Seems normal enough... until [=LaCienega=] randomly decides to ARREST Penny [[ItAmusedMe for the fun of it]] only to be stopped by Sunset. [=LaCi=] being mean to Penny [[SitcomArchNemesis is nothing new]], but this scene comes off as VERY bizarre because of how [[OutOfCharacterMoment randomly aggressive]] [=LaCienega=] (who's normally a verbal bully who just insults Penny) was being about it. Penny [[AngstWhatAngst never says anything about what just happened there]], nor is there any indication that [=LaCienega=] [[KarmaHoudini got punished for it]] other than Sunset firmly telling her to stop.
* BrokenBase: While [=LaCienega=] and Dijonay are pretty universally disliked, there is a rift in the fandom of whereas their dynamic with Penny is genuinely entertaining or if its just toxic and they should be excommunicated from the show. There’s also some debate over who is the worst, as while [=LaCieniga=] backstabs Penny a lot similarly to [=DiJonay=] and is outwardly nasty towards, she at least [[AtLeastIAdmitIt is upfront with the fact]] she doesn’t like her.
* CatharsisFactor:
** When Oscar calls Suga Mama out in "Penny Potter" for her behaviour towards him it's intended to be a KickTheDog moment. Instead, it comes off as ''incredibly'' satisfying since Oscar [[TheDogBitesBack finally stood up to his abusive mother]].
** Papi's insults towards Suga Mama as well - it's intended to be a RunningGag, but for some who think Suga Mama's treatment towards Oscar isn't funny, he's one of the only ones who actively gives her what she deserves.
* EnsembleDarkhorse:
** Bobby Proud appeared in a handful of episodes but was popular to have his own music video. That being said, the revival decided to treat Bobby as part of the main family.
** The buff, recurring [[TheAhnold Ahnold]], who has various roles, and is considered funny due to his accent and Terminator references.
** Papi for having the funniest lines on the show.
** Fifteen Cent. Just look at all the fan-art of him.
** Arsenio Hall also deserves a big mention for his performance as Dr. Carver.
** Dr. Payne, foo!
** Radika, the Muslim girl from "Culture Shock". She's a sweet and caring young girl who loves to learn new things. It helps that she's a decent representation of Muslim culture.
** Peabo for his cute design, being one of the few characters that isn't a {{Jerkass}} to Oscar(and the only one who likes Proud Snax), and being voiced by ''Creator/CreeSummer''.
* EsotericHappyEnding: "The Legend of Johnny Lovely". An actual boy named Johnny Lovely is suspended from school after dancing with Penny. She then leads a wild goose chase in search of him that ends at the intersection of Johnny Avenue and Lovely Lane. Penny then concludes that Johnny is just a legend and that he may be out there somewhere.
* FanonDiscontinuity: Most fans ignore ''Twins To Tweens'' because of how cruel it is to Penny. Those who don't downright hate the episode, usually pretend that Al Roker also put a spell on Penny's family and friends to help explain their behavior, even though Cece tells Penny that the reason nobody likes her anymore is because she is the oldest.
* FridgeLogic: Why did Zoey keep her outfit in "Hip-Hop Helicopter" despite her mom grounding her (and the fact that Zoey’s aunt was the one who designed the revealing outfits that the girls wore on the show)? It was because Zoey may not have been grounded for wearing the outfit. She was probably grounded because she peer pressured Penny into disobeying her parents.
* HarsherInHindsight: In a 2003 episode, Penny is watching a football game and says that Michael Vick is the man. Not so much now, after his dogfighting case lost him the approval of the public.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** When Oscar listed "the ''Series/SisterSister'' Sisters" (Creator/TiaAndTameraMowry) as some of the most famous twins he knows, the reference sounded dated when the episode first aired, two years after ''Sister, Sister'' ended. Starting the following year, the reference sounded relevant again, when Disney Channel started airing ''Sister, Sister'' reruns.[[note]]Tia and Tamera starring in the ''Literature/{{Twitches}}'' [=DCOMs=] might have also helped.[[/note]]
** Penny mentions WesternAnimation/KimPossible in "The Ballad of Johnny Lovely", but in a manner that makes it unclear whether her show is in a SharedUniverse with this one, or just a ShowWithinAShow. After the Prouds and Kim starred in [[Franchise/DisneyChannelAnimatedUniverse two separate crossovers]] with ''WesternAnimation/LiloAndStitchTheSeries'', the former now seems more likely.
** When Music/{{Beyonce}} had [[UntoUsASonAndDaughterAreBorn her twins]] with Music/JayZ in 2017, a lot of people [[https://78.media.tumblr.com/b4b127af7a193d402ae54695f91158c9/tumblr_oruxjy8kfs1ql5w9mo1_1280.jpg compared]] [[https://78.media.tumblr.com/4b6b68df4313c728f984d3ce05cdd5de/tumblr_oruxjy8kfs1ql5w9mo2_1280.jpg their family]] with the Prouds: Beyonce=Trudy, Jay=Oscar, their older daughter Blue=Penny, and the aforementioned twins=Bebe and Cece. It helps that Bey herself performed the theme as part of Music/DestinysChild.
** The episode "Tiger Whisperer", where Penny suddenly gains the ability to communicate with a tiger named Ajay, becomes this mixed with ActorAllusion after the release of the direct-to-video sequels of ''Film/DrDolittle'' five years later, in which it's revealed that Creator/KylaPratt's character inherited her father's gift of being able to talk to animals.
** "A Hero for Halloween" has a teenager given superpowers because of an invention of their dad's, even though that wasn't his intent. And the teenager becomes a superhero who saves the family from an evil ghost. Penny becoming Snack Girl predated ''WesternAnimation/DannyPhantom'' by two years.
** In "Smackmania 6: Mongo vs. Mama's Boy", Oscar has to step in a wrestling ring and always get saved by his mama. Not a bad gimmick for [[Wrestling/SheltonBenjamin someone]] to use two years later.
** In "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly", in which Music/AliciaKeys guest stars as herself, Penny warns [=LaCienega=] about bad karma when she wins a rigged singing contest. Shortly after the episode aired, Keys released a single called "Karma", which became a minor hit.
*** In the same episode, Brian Dunkleman guest stars as the host of the contest to play up his one season role as the co-host of American Idol. During the episode, Brian spills to Penny that the entire contest is rigged and completely phony. Years later, Brian would reveal this was the exact reason he left American Idol in the first place. He felt that the contest was unfair to the competitors, that it was unnecessarily cruel in making fun of people who just couldn't sing, and that the jokes written for him and co-host Ryan Seacrest were simply unfunny and lame.
* HoYay: In "The Adventures in Bebe-Sitting", Dijonay asks if Penny "loves" her, and Penny confirms this. Penny calling Dijonay "her girl" as she always does becomes a little more poignant.
** In "Romeo Must Wed", Dijonay's observation of Kwok's fiance goes further than simple admiration.
** In "The Camp, The Counselor, The Mole, And The Rock", Penny imagines kissing Tory, when in reality she puckering her lips at Dijonay's face.
* {{Jerkass Woobie}}:
** Dijonay in "Surf and Turf", when Sticky refuses to kiss her in front of a lot of people. There’s also the fact that she is stuck raising her nine annoying younger siblings and her parents pretty much ignore her while she does the parental work.
** It's a little hard not to feel bad for [=LaCienega=] when she starts living with the Gross Sisters' parents in "Culture Shock". It would be one thing if she was living with a tougher family, but she's put into child labor the minute she's introduced to their mother.
** Suga Mama in a few episodes, in regards to episodes seeing her much more softer side, such as the episode where she falls in love with a man who Oscar believes is a GoldDigger, but is actually [[spoiler: suffering from Alzheimer's and can’t marry her after all]]. There’s also the fact that she has lived in the shadow of her {{Jerkass}} sister, Sista Spice, who openly insults and belittles her more than she does with Oscar.
** Oscar. While he can be a jerk sometimes, and often brings his misfortunes on himself since he's TooDumbToLive, he still suffers the most abuse out of all the characters. He is constantly made fun of by his arch-rival Wizard Kelly for missing the shot at the basketball game. He puts up with a lot and not a single person bats an eye or cares when something bad happens to him or he gets hurt. Trudy can be really hard on him, and Suga Mama gives nothing but abuse and contempt to him, even cheering ''against'' him when he was a basketball star as a teen and hoping he loses.
** The Gross Sisters hide their true feelings and regularly beat people up because they're frustrated at how bad their home life is and how everyone else hates them. [[SelfFulfillingProphecy Which is actually pretty]] [[TruthInTelevision typical of some bullies.]] However, Olei is mostly just TheWoobie.
** Trudy has her moments, particularly in "There's Something About Rene" when she starts to feel useless or in "Romeo Must Wed" when her sister keeps upstaging her and Penny rejects the dress she made for her.
** Sunny Stevens in "Hooray for Iesha." The reason why she was acting like a snobby diva was because of how unhappy she was with her celebrity lifestyle. She even reveals that she has issues making friends due to it. She just wanted a regular life.
* JerksAreWorseThanVillains: As far as antagonists go, the Gross Sisters are the closest this show has to villains, [[LoveToHate yet they are still enjoyable to watch due to Nubia's sass]] and had even tried to help Penny out whenever she was in a difficult situation at times (such as trying to get back at [=LaCienega=] in the first episode). Compare that to what Dijonay, Penny's own friend, has done to Penny many times: stab her in the back along with the rest of Penny's friends whenever Penny was in a pickle. Some fans have even argued that the Gross Sisters treated Penny more like a friend than the latter's actual friends.
* JustHereForGodzilla: Due to the amount of celebrities who have guest starred in the series, a lot of people tune in for them.
* LauncherOfAThousandShips: Penny has been paired up with practically every character on the show.
* LoveToHate:
** The Gross Sisters are well...gross, but Nubia's sassy remarks make it too hard not to enjoy them.
** Dr. Carver is just too evil and hilarious for words. Thumbs up to Arsenio Hall for really nailing the role.
** Wizard Kelly is a callous JerkJock, but he is a hilarious one and it's hard to imagine the show without him, y'all!
* MemeticMutation:
** [[https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/oscar-proud-running The scene where Oscar is chasing down a car]] has recently become this while juxtaposed in rather humorous edits.
** [[https://youtu.be/zCEm_zbzBh4 "Stop spreading those rumors around, stop spreading the lies"]] from "Rumors" has been making the rounds on social media platforms.
** Expect this exchange to happen as soon as someone quotes Dr. Payne:
--->"QUIET FOOL! RESPECT YOUR SWEET LITTLE SUGA MAMA!"
---->"Thank you, Dr. Payne."
----->"Anything for you, Sugar Bear."
* {{Moe}}:
** Penny is cute, loud and she's got it going on.
** Radika. She is a sweet and caring girl who is curious about everything, and is a fan favorite for being a good example of Muslim representation.
** The Chang Triplets are AsianAndNerdy {{Cute Bookworm}}s.
* MoralEventHorizon:
** Al Roker not only is a JackassGenie, but he tricked Penny into signing the adults over to him so he can enslave them in his sweatshop and then he tricks Penny into betting the twins to be his slaves as well.
** Helga from "Thelma and Luis" is revealed to be running a slave labor camp for elderly people.
** Sista Spice at first seems like a typical con artist, until she reveals that she was gonna have Oscar take the fall in her scam.
* SugarWiki/MostWonderfulSound: Any time Papi Boulevardez laughs.
* OlderThanTheyThink: No, contrary to what its detractors believe, Season 2 of ''WesternAnimation/TheProudFamilyLouderAndProuder'' wasn't the first time ''The Proud Family'' has tackled heavy subjects relating to racism. "I Had a Dream" did that 21 years before by having Penny be whisked back in time to 1955 and join the then-nascent Civil Rights Movement.
* OneTrueThreesome: LPDZ being a poly relationship is quite popular with the fandom. Their song, “We Are Best Friends”, even seems to have double-meaning in it.
* TheScrappy:
** Dijonay and [=LaCienega=] are this, due to how they treat Penny. Although [=LaCienega=] became a LovableAlphaBitch, she still slips back to being a {{jerkass}} and constantly bullies and belittles Penny and other characters. Dijoney meanwhile is constantly disloyal and backstabs Penny, and cannot keep a secret. This is so egregious that one of the most remembered aspects of the show/one that’s brought up frequently is how terrible Penny's friends are (Zoey and Sticky are base breaking in terms of how loyal they really are considering they, while nicer, also frequently ditch Penny).
** The Talking Red Nosed Baby is also hated. He constantly tortures Oscar for no reason but for his own amusement and has never gotten any punishment for it. Unlike other characters that tormented Oscar like Wizard Kelly and Dr. Payne where they're considered hilariously entertaining to make up for it (and in Dr. Payne's case, Oscar usually provokes him, which makes it harder to root for Oscar in these scenarios), the Talking Baby however has no such qualities to redeem himself with.
* [[SugarWiki/HeReallyCanAct She Really Can Act]]: Creator/KylaPratt has incredible range when delivering Penny's lines when the character is angry, upset, scared, or annoyed.
* {{Squick}}: A reminder in one episode, Dijonay ''flirted with a baby'' after Penny already told her he was only 10 months old.
* StrawmanHasAPoint:
** Oscar's treatment of Suga Mama. While it's made clear that they do love each other and most of her reprisals are triggered by Oscar's refusal to watch his mouth, it's not hard to see why he snarks at her like he does. She's openly treated him like TheUnfavorite since childhood (he once boredly corrected her that he was absent from several family outings when she brings them up), insults him nonstop, responds to ''his'' insults with excessive physical violence, shows a sense of entitlement about being allowed over (coming over uninvited, helping herself to food, complaining about getting kicked out of the guest room despite having her own house) and is a {{Hypocrite}} in that she was TheUnfavorite to her own parents but treats Oscar the same way. Oscar is astounded in one episode to find out that his mother even likes him.
** "Culture Shock" brought both Oscar and Suga Mama in the fold, while it was wrong that their initial attitudes to the Zamins were "Those People", they had a point in saying that they wouldn't allow their kids to stay over at the house of people they don't know very well. It's hard to believe the whole school okayed this cultural exchange program, with what seems to be little to no vetting, and is likely a liability to happen if a kid was switched to a abusive family or a family that doesn't care to respect the student's own cultural customs or beliefs or even some medical issues (say a family with parents who are food allergy skeptics with a kid from another family who has deadly food allergies). And it should be a given that most parents wouldn't want to entrust their child's safety to a family they don't know very well.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSong: In "Election", Penny and Lil' Wizard have a mash-up of Music/WhitneyHouston's "Greatest Love of All" and Music/{{Chic}}'s "Good Times", of course with altered lyrics to suit their presidential campaigns.
** "It’s All About Me"'s instrumental sounds very similar to Music/BritneySpears's "Oops!…I Did It Again".
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: There were several one-shots that could've been good regulars.
** Kwok, Penny's love interest from "Romeo Must Wed". He and Penny seemingly become a couple at the end of the episode, but he just vanished and was never seen again, aside from brief cameos in "Poetic Justice" and "Tween Town".
** Radika's debut episode was about the characters learning to look past her nationality and getting to know her. However, the show got cancelled before they could further develop her as a character. It helps that she's one of the nicest characters on the show. Same goes for the rest of her family. The fact that there was no opportunity in the episode to expand on Radika's own life and her feelings was touched on in a [[https://www.vice.com/en/article/mbk4mp/the-proud-family-muslim-representation Vice article]] where a viewer revisited the episode.
* ToughActToFollow: The studio's follow-up to ''The Proud Family'' was ''WesternAnimation/DaBoomCrew'', which was met with an acidic response.
* UnintentionallySympathetic:
** Oscar in "Penny Potter". The viewers are supposed to side against him when he finally gets fed up with Suga Mama's harsh treatment towards him and he finally stands up to her. While Oscar did go overboard, Oscar is meant to be seen in the wrong despite Suga Mama never being called out for her abusive behavior towards Oscar.
** Penny in "The Party". While she came off as bratty and the viewers were supposed to side against her, she wasn't wrong to be upset about her friends ditching her for [=LaCienega=]'s party. Dijonay even crossed the line by saying that Penny was desperate to take anybody. Also, Penny was right to not want the Gross Sisters to come to her party, considering that they are bullies; the fact that they tell Penny that they found all the invitations she sent out ''in the trash'' probably didn't help either.
** Penny in general when it comes to her family members. She would forcefully recant her statement of how she can't stand her family members (Oscar, Trudy and Suga Mama) when she's overheard in certain scenes due to how irritated she gets with their attitudes. With the way Oscar and Trudy act (the former with his ManChild ways and the latter with her self-centered and domineering attitude), it's hard to not blame Penny for her feelings towards them. Many fans especially hate how Penny is always forced to watch the twins, either having to take them with her to events or having to cancel her plans last minute, arguing just because Penny is the oldest it’s not fair for her, a teenager, to have to take care of them, and if child care is such a constant need her parents should hire a babysitter.
* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic:
** Penny's friends in "A Star Is Scorned". In the episode, Penny decides to go solo and dump her friends after LPDZ becomes famous, until she realizes she misses her old life and quits. While this episode was obviously trying to give an aesop about how it's not nice to dump your friends for fame, fans of the show found it hard to sympathize with Penny's friends [[ChronicBackstabbingDisorder due to how fake they can be towards her]] as Suga Mama points out. It also helps that Dijonay even admits at the end that if it was her she wouldn’t have given up her fame and money.
** [=LaCienega=] in "Love Thy Neighbor". While it was cruel for the other kids and teacher to laugh at her big feet during the swim test scene, [=LaCienega=] is too much of a jerkass to be seen as sympathetic since she's always cruel to others (and she continued to whine and cry about it long after everyone else moved on, making her come across as {{wangst}}y). Had it been anyone else being bullied for a similar reason, she more than likely would've joined in.
** Oscar and the other parents get this for kicking their kids out of the house for [[DisproportionateRetribution refusing to do their chores]] unless they receive a higher allowance. Besides the fact that kids can't earn money-- Zoey gets fired from being a movie theater usher when it turns out she lied about her age-- it's basically child abuse. Also, Oscar waits until Penny is worn down from marching alone and screaming at the top of her lungs for hours before he bribes her to come home with homemade gumbo, and promising to listen to her. And he was the ''only'' parent that compromised; everyone else accepted their kids and the status quo while Penny got ten dollars. It also doesn't help that the beginning of the episode revealed Oscar used Penny to do all the stuff Trudy asked ''him'' to do, like changing the oil in the car. Not only did Penny only receive five dollars after working her ass off for the entire day, ''Trudy actually agreed with Oscar that Penny should only get five dollars''.
** Suga Mama herself - considering her treatment towards Oscar as TheUnfavorite (see StrawmanHasAPoint), Oscar is well within his rights to want nothing to do with her.
*** Viewers were also supposed to sympathize with Suga Mama in the episode "Behind the Family Lines" when Trudy’s family members consistently looked down on her (along with Oscar). However, since Suga Mama treats Oscar the exact same way, it backfired and Trudy’s family’s treatment of Suga Mama felt like LaserGuidedKarma.
** Even Trudy has her own moments of this - in one episode, Penny has a broken leg and Suga Mama has a revoked driver's license. When Trudy has to drive Suga Mama around while taking care of bedridden Penny, she snaps - and even tells Oscar that while she can handle "Your daughter", she can't handle "your mother" at the same time. While being stressed ''is'' understandable, this is one of only two times Suga Mama is ever called out on her behaviour, and instead gives the impression Trudy is just fine with Suga Mama [[WhatTheHellHero as long as Suga Mama isn't bothering HER]].
* UglyCute: Zoey and the Gross Sisters.
* ValuesDissonance:
** While the show is still popular, viewers have noted that certain aspects have not aged well. The show has been accused of being colorist, as Penny, who has light skin and a thin though shapely build, is portrayed as pretty, desirable, and has an overall good moral compass, compared to Dijonay, who's darker, plump, and a gossipy backstabber, who has nine rowdy younger siblings. It doesn't help that she was originally named "Delinquetta". While it’s the most apparent with Dijonay, this issue also applies to other dark skinned characters like Oscar or Suga Mama being portrayed negatively/as unattractive while light skinned characters, like Trudy, are portrayed as level headed/attractive. Additionally, the Gross Sisters are portrayed as blue-skinned because they're ashy, and the Chang Triplets are stereotypical AsianAndNerdy characters. When the Chang Triplets finally reappeared in the second season of ''Louder and Prouder'', they got {{retool}}ed to be less stereotypical and more individualized.
** There is also how the parents handle their kids politely refusing to do chores unless they get an increase in their allowance: ''kicking them out to the curb''. Penny takes it in stride, encouraging her friends to become self-sufficient, but her friends bail when they see their parents ''hired other kids'' to do their chores and pay them for it. Oscar is the only parent who compromised by treating Penny to gumbo as an ApologyGift, carried her home since she was marching all day, and doubling her allowance. It's meant to be an analogy for strikebreakers but looks like blatant child abuse instead. In the 2020s, the television journalist would probably be making a discreet call to Child Protective Services while covering the "strike".
* ViewerGenderConfusion: Some viewers mistook [=BeBe=] for a girl up until "Twins to Tweens", where he and [=CeCe=] are magically turned into teens.
* TheWoobie:
** Penny. She usually suffers misfortune via her friends or family.
** Zoey. She's a ShrinkingViolet who is Penny's only real friend, and fears Dijonay and [=LaCienega=] more than Penny.
** Puff. The poor dog takes so much abuse from [=BeBe=] and [=CeCe=].
