* CompleteMonster: [[SociopathicSoldier Colonel Arnold Hawthorne]], described by both Gabriel and Lucifer as the worst human on Earth, is the prophesied "[[HumansAreTheRealMonsters Dark Soul]]" sought after by the rebel angels during the Second War in Heaven. Once a man who [[FromNobodyToNightmare came from a poor working family]] and graduated from the top of his class at the military academy, Hawthorne rose through the ranks of the army and eventually participated in UsefulNotes/TheKoreanWar, where he committed the most grotesque war crimes ever recorded in American history. Conducting a series of ritualistic killings at the Battle of Chosin, Hawthorne turned the battlefield into a mass human sacrifice; Hawthorne dismembered his victims, impaled them, and dumped their bodies into a mass grave, eating their hearts and ordering his troops to do the same, and cutting off their faces as trophies. After his death, Hawthorne's soul was placed inside the innocent Mary, harming her body and proudly confessing to have been "[[CardCarryingVillain colder than anyone]]" at Chosin.
* HoYay: Gabriel tenderly kisses Simon's hand when they meet. Also, Lucifer's scene with Gabriel, where he ''licks his face'' before [[spoiler:ripping his heart out and eating it]].
* JustHereForGodzilla: Many cite Gabriel as the best things about the movies; Christopher Walken gives a solid dramatic performance and there is a neat character arc that he takes. Walken's presence is often cited as what elevates the first two sequels from the 4th and 5th movies.
* MagnificentBastard:
** ArchangelGabriel, BigBad of the first two films and [[HeelFaceTurn redeemed]] mentor of the third, is a ruthless angel furious at being cast aside by God in favor of humanity. Leading his forces in a rebellion to a full stalemate against the loyalist angels, Gabriel hunts down an evil soul on earth, knowing that it will turn the tide with its knowledge of war and treachery. Gabriel hunts down the soul after killing his brother Simon for hiding it, playing on his enemies' fears and insecurities before returning after his seeming death at the hand of Lucifer. Almost taking the world and Eden, Gabriel is punished by being turned into a human. After years with time to reflect and repent, Gabriel mentors the young Nephilim Danyael to guide him to stop the angel of Genocide Pyriel and end the war at last, ultimately achieving his redemption and being welcomed home by his Father.
** [[{{Satan}} Lucifer]], [[FallenAngel the first angel]] once loved above all others. Gleefully reveling in his malice, Lucifer knows that if Gabriel wins his war in heaven, he will only create another hell and Lucifer cannot allow this. Revealing himself to the heroes, Lucifer give them advice to guide them against Gabriel from the shadows so subtly that Gabriel has no idea of his former brothers involvement. Lucifer reveals the insecurities at the heart of every Angel so Thomas Dagget might be able to shake Gabriel's conviction, ultimately killing Gabriel before demanding Thomas and his friend Katherine "come home" with him. Upon the refusal, Lucifer handles it with good humor, departing to his unchallenged dominion over hell.
* OneSceneWonder: Creator/ViggoMortensen as Lucifer only shows up for five minutes, but he is utterly terrifying and one of the best parts of the movie after Gabriel.
* RetroactiveRecognition: It seems [[Film/TheLordOfTheRings Satan took up the Shards of Narsil]] at some point.
* {{Sequelitis}}: All of the sequels, especially the fourth and fifth movies.
* {{Squick}}: [[spoiler: Simon kissing a corpse and later, a little girl]]
