* AccidentalAesop: Hyper's plan in ''[[Film/ThePrincessDiaries The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement]]'' – pander to Critic's male boner tastes so he'd be into her, with him even saying he's shocked she's into this stuff and it being revealed she's not – left people thinking they were insulting “fake geek girls”. Even if it came off that way, Doug has insulted people who think those girls exist before (especially when foolish comments accuse Tamara or Rachel of it) so it probably wasn't intentional.
* AccidentalInnuendo:
** Thanks to the font Doug used in the ''Bridge to Terabithia'' review, a lot of people misread the last word in "[[https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10202091368869500&set=o.127127037353766&type=3&theater Why Call the Police When You Have Gum]]" as "cum".
** [[http://atopfourthwall.tumblr.com/post/139426103423 Even Lewis]] got in on porning up the PieInTheFace joke from ''Bloodrayne''.
* ActorShipping:
** Doug has been shipped with everyone. What makes this less uncomfortable is that he's fully admitted to pandering and being a flirt at cons and interviews.
** When it comes to reboot era, Doug/Tamara because of their characters having TheMasochismTango. Lampshaded in Hyper Fangirl's [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=286TgavfyfE vlog]], where Tamara gets pissed off because everyone asks her if she has a crush on Doug and she has a boyfriend. Though she still teases it in the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5Gsji6NhA0 Anime Midwest panel]], introducing herself as Doug's slave, and has [[https://twitter.com/TamaraLChambers/status/633481011062571009 tweeted]] she wants to make a video walking him like a dog.
** Doug and Rob encouraged shipping of themselves for a long time, with Doug stripping for Rob, Rob barging into Doug showering, and it still pops up every now and then with them asking for incest art and fanfic. There's an old interview where Rob says he wants 1000 words minimum SlashFic, and Doug thinks they don't even need anything because they do it all already.
* AdaptationDisplacement: Discussed with ''Film/TheMummy1999'' (the Brendan Frasier movie) taking the place in modern pop culture over [[Film/TheMummy1932 the original 1930s film]].
* {{Adorkable}}:
** The Past Critic's got stuffed animals in a proud place of his bedroom, and is a SarcasmBlind WideEyedIdealist geek.
** Malcolm. Even with TheResenter issues coming into play and making him do some morally shitty things every now and then, his shy revealing that he's “coming to terms” with his crush on the Critic is really endearing.
** When he's given the chance to, Shyamalan shows he's actually adorably enthusiastic about his movies, despite not being good at them.
* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation:
** When he breaks down in crossovers, is it genuine or is he pulling a WoundedGazelleGambit because he's a good actor and knows what the reaction will be? [[TakeAThirdOption Or a bit of both?]]
** Santa Christ himself is prone to this in his later appearances. Does he truly have a dark side to him? Or is he merely just screwing around with the Critic? Especially since all of his more... ''questionable'' comments are always said when NC is around. Rob talked about in the ''Devil'' real thoughts about how he still thinks Santa Christ is basically good, but lets loose his frustration on Critic.
** All the attacks on specific actors in the reboot, like Madonna still being sexual at her age, Brad Jones and Alec Baldwin apparently being overweight, the lampshaded bitching about Dakota Fanning, Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, Creator/RussellCrowe and so on. Carrying on taunting Kyle over Colm Wilkinson even though he's upset also included. AesopAmnesia of "The Review Must Go On" and what he'd already learned before? Or another middle finger to Doug, showing him again who's really in control?
** Is Critic just oblivious and very stupid when it comes to Malcolm and Tamara's bitterness of the way he treats them? He tells them immediately what he's doing to humiliate them, ignores their outright telling him that they want to hurt him back, and Doug in-universe has told him he's gotten stupider. Or does he realize how bad he's acting and wants to be punished, for views, guilt or the masochism he's always had? His depression isn't exactly secret, and Tamara was brought on just to give him pain.
** The ending of the ''Christmas Story II'' review. ShipTease? Or that StockholmSyndrome kicking in? He reminds her of the kidnapping, Doug confirmed Stockholm in said kidnapping episode, when she runs up his eyes still look scared, she's the one who cuddles into the SleepCute even after he got her to agree this would never happen, plus he's completely alone, has a thing for abusive girls and the last review had him terrify Malcolm and Tamara with some serious psychotic. Doug essentially confirmed the latter in Midwest Media Expo 2015, saying Critic was right to yell at her for what she'd done and Hyper's still a bad person.
** At the end of ''Film/ThePhantomOfTheOpera2004'', Critic's reaction to Hyper dating Devil Boner while still trying to go after him: angry, jealous, or mix of the two? He still doesn't like her at all in the review, even in that scene, but Black Willy Wonka called him out right at the start for being needy for attention. Plus Stockholm.
** In the ''Cinderella'' review, it's really up to you if you think Benny was into Hyper romantically (or if they had a thing), or just a possessive assassin taking his job very seriously.
** Was Hyper genuinely prepared to let Deadpool touch her chest in the ''Film/GreenLantern2011'' review just because he wanted to (which is [[DesperatelyCravesAffection sadly in character]]), or just trolling him because she knew Devil Boner would show up to violently defend her?
** Does the Nostalgia Critic make jokes during his reviews because he knows that the comedy will attract viewers? Or does he make jokes to prevent the bad movies from driving him insane? There are several examples where really bad movies(like Batman and Robin) are shown to drive him to insanity, so maybe he’s making jokes as a coping mechanism(sort of like how Spider-Man also makes jokes when he fights supervillains to prevent himself from going insane with fear). To make this ambiguous, there’s also the fact that several of his jokes are “unplanned” and he seems to get as genuinely surprised as the audience about them...
* AluminumChristmasTrees: Several viewers who watched [[Recap/TheNostalgiaCriticS7E9 his review]] of ''WesternAnimation/TheLorax2012'' thought the Onceler fandom aka "Oncelings", was something Doug made up for that episode. Nope, it's entirely real.
* AndYouThoughtItWouldFail:
** In the ''Pixels'' commentary, they brag that it's the second most watched review of all time at filming, and Rob sarcastically tells Doug that he 'knew' the clipless reviews would go nowhere.
** Lampshaded in the ''Film/ChristmasWithTheKranks'' review where 2007 Critic is sure clipless reviews along with anniversary specials, crossovers and a feud with the Nerd will all bomb, and new Critic tells him all of those got the biggest hits.
** Doug's said a few times that his successful career has been mostly been down to luck and Michaud having a better business mind than him, as he would have probably failed on his own.
* {{Applicability}}:
** Autistic fans have welcomed Critic with open arms, with Doug comparing him to similarly coded Peridot, and Home Alone 2 bringing back the cereal special interest, all the nerves from the episode resulting in a meltdown when it's mocked and getting forgiven when he stresses out over thinking he ruined it.
** Hyper Fangirl has her fair share of MisaimedFandom, but her most devoted audience are neuroatypical women who relate to her struggles and want to see her get better (without Critic having to forgive her).
* ArchivePanic: Over ''four hundred episodes'' and counting since 2007.
* AssPull:
** Hyper suddenly being made to be the sympathetic victim at Critic's TheReasonYouSuckSpeech in the ''Christmas Story II'' review. He's threatened to stab her, he's waved a gun in her face, he's chased her out of the studio, he's told her no and that he can't stand her a million times, but up until this point his violent refusals were just met with deluded ignoring and wanting him more. The accompanying vlog makes it better (as did Doug at a later con, saying Critic was right to yell) by turning it into a WoundedGazelleGambit, something that Critic tentatively suspected anyway by nervously telling her she was cheating when she started getting upset.
** Critic speechifying (with ''really'' sappy music) to Dante Basco about how he's trying too hard to please the fans by being Zuko comes out of nowhere, both for Critic (who hasn't even had time to think about this, running away for most of it, ''and'' didn't even have a EurekaMoment because he was in so much pain beforehand) and Dante (who never hinted this was about the fans, and even the tagline confirms is in the right). It only happens because it was near the end of the episode and Doug needed to wrap it up.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeArt: The animated segments, especially those produced by [[WebVideo/SatelliteCity Sam Fennah]], are widely seen as [[JustHereForGodzilla the most worthwhile part]] of Doug's review of ''Music/TheWall''.
* BadassDecay:
** Santa Christ in ''Film/SonOfTheMask'' can't help Critic with his movie problems and doesn't really care either, preferring instead to burn his hands for fun and leave him crying on the floor.
** While he had suicidal intentions, Critic in ''WebVideo/ToBoldlyFlee'' TookALevelInBadass, made a HeroicSacrifice and put all his friends above himself. In the reboot, he's hiding behind little girls (Chick could at least look after herself, Evilina is hell spawn but gets slapped around) and his becoming even more cowardly has been lampshaded in episodes like Film/TheLastAirbender and Film/GhostDad.
** Tamara (the AsHerself character, not Malice or Hyper) ruled everything in ''Film/TheWickerMan2006'' review, but never reached that level of awesome again. This can be explained by being under Critic's thumb afterwards, no matter how much she hates him.
** Zod goes from his ''Superman'' self, to humanized but still a force to be reckoned with in ''WebVideo/ToBoldlyFlee'', to defeated[=/=]{{groin attack}}ed at the end of the ''Film/ManOfSteel'' review, and ends up doing porn by ''Film/TheHauntedMansion2003''.
* BaseBreakingCharacter: Out of the already-contentious post-revival recurring sketch characters, Hyper Fangirl is the most polarizing. Some consider her a charming, funny parody of fangirls, while others think she gets too much screentime and find her antics annoying or creepy. This was more glaring during her initial StoryArc when she stalked the Critic; some found her cute and sympathized with her [[TragicVillain more tragic moments]], while others found it her creepy and unsympathetic and unable to forgive her even after the Critic did. Tamara is a GenreSavvy lady [[https://www.facebook.com/TamaraLChambers/posts/763741896989363 and told people]] that whether you either love or hate Hyper, you should follow the (now-defunct) CharacterBlog regardless. Eventually referenced in the ''Princess Diaries 2'' review where she's given a potential death scene, and the Critic notes that the fans' response to it will determine whether it sticks. [[spoiler: It doesn't.]]
* BestKnownForTheFanservice:
** To be as nice as possible, all people seem to remember about the "Surf Ninjas" review is either "[[WesternAnimation/TheTransformersTheMovie I died for your sins]]" or his "GEEEEEENIUS" ShirtlessScene.
** He acknowledged in following videos that all anyone remembered about the "Dumbest Superman Moments" is him looking pretty in eyeliner and mascara.
** In a non-sexual version, no matter how long it's been, no matter how many good sensible points he makes, if he has a breakdown or goes on a rant in a review then that will be all people remember of the episode.
** From the ''Care Bears'' review, most people only remember him acting out reactions of the villain lady getting oral sex.
** Same for the long bout of sex noises in ''Jaws 3D'', helped by the fact that Doug was doing orgasm noises for the man ''and'' the woman.
** When the ''{{Film/Transformers|DarkOfTheMoon}} 3'' and ''Film/Jungle2Jungle'' reviews come up, more people will remember the giant hickeys on his neck than anything else.
** [[https://twitter.com/InGeekWeTrust/status/474678705873514496 Brian is totally aware]] that all anyone will remember of the ''Future's End'' episode is the Critic/Snob cameo where it cuts off right before Critic gives Snob a blowjob.
** Angry Joe's rematch with Critic on the ''VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom'' game was fun overall, but all anyone remembers is Doug fellating his joystick. [[http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2011/058/6/4/joy____suck__by_gamemastertom-d3aj87j.gif Just look at him go.]]
** Again provides it in That Sci-Fi Guy's ''Film/The6thDay'' episode. Aside from the ending where he wants himself as a SexSlave, when he brings up Arnold wanting to 'test' the CreepyDoll out, it cuts back from TSFG to Doug miming giving a blowjob before his “a mouth is a mouth” line. Not that the review isn't good, but it's hard to get that out of your head.
** Another non-sexual example: his ''Franchise/JurassicPark'' reviews are known best for the "Motherfuckin' T-Rex" portions, especially ''Film/JurassicWorld'', for bringing in John Bailey to narrate the T-Rex vs. I-Rex fight, with the T-Rex having a voice like ''[[Franchise/{{Transformers}} Optimus Prime]]''.
** In a behind the scenes version, the ''Christmas Story II'' BTS has a lot of character stuff that clears up the episode, but for both in-universe and out, most like to focus on the part with Doug as a hot cheerleader.
* BetterOnDVD: Aside from the one editorial, Matrix Month is a lot better seen all together, as you can catch all the meta-plot moments more.
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment:
** Rachel and Malcolm's song in the ''Film/LesMiserables2012'' review. They're on the television screen, only Critic can see them, and after it's over the screen switches off and Critic – true to form doesn't care and moves on.
** In ''Old vs New: Spider-Man'', Malcolm plays a StrawFan who falls in love with Critic, gets angry with him just as fast, gets superpowers and fails to do anything with them.
--->'''Hyper''': I don't know about you but that made perfect sense to me.
** In the TMNT crossover, there are two moments where Doug/James swap voices and then glasses, but it's never explained why or amounts to anything other than a reference. If you don't know what they're referring to you'll be lost.
** In one of their Midwest Media Expo panels, Hyper crashes it and Critic/Doug has to pretend to be into her to get her out, Rob calls those few minutes a BLAM. When the audience joins in with the voice, he says “dance, puppets dance”.
** ''Film/TheAdventuresOfSharkboyAndLavaGirl'' has Critic getting afraid of a scene and calling his past self to demand an apology. There's precedent and it's a good moment, but even past!Critic lampshades that the film isn't bad/weird enough to call for this kinda thing.
** Randy Savage and Segata Sanshiro's cameo appearance and shouting match in the ''VideoGame/DragonsLair'' review has virtually nothing to do with the rest of the review. A caption in-episode even admits it's not relevant to what's being advertised at all. But it's friggin' awesome.
** The brief appearance of Creator/AmandaCelineMiller (the [[TheOtherDarrin new]] voice of [[Anime/SailorMoon Sailor Jupiter]] in the Film/JupiterAscending review. All she does is say that she doesn't feel "Jupiter" is a stupid name.
** In the ''{{Film/Blade}}'' review, the Critic suddenly partying while eating mini [=OREOs=].
** Rob starts trying to save Critic from a HeroicBSOD in a ''Lord Of The Rings'' parody in the ''Film/{{Fantastic Four|2015}}'' review and offering to carry him, but gives up and just tells Critic to finish the review on his own, and Critic recovers easily. It's even more confusing without knowing the reference.
** The "boring" song in the ''Film/{{Junior}}'' review.
** For people who aren't familiar with the ''WebVideo/SatelliteCity'' characters, the segment Sam Fennah provided for "The Trial" is rather jarring to see with Doug randomly dropped into a beautifully animated CGI landscape with bizarre anthropomorphic monsters.
* CatharsisFactor:
** Critic getting out of a depression episode (even if it realistically didn't last) with "I'm pathetic but I'm proud" was probably the first time people were glad to relate to him.
** For anyone who's been stalked, abused or harassed and didn't have the chance or courage to tell their abuser off, Critic telling Hyper Fangirl in ''Christmas Story II'' that she'll never win him over because he hates her. Also his previous speech in ''The Princess Diaries II'', trying really hard to get her to see that what she's feeling isn't love, and that he's never going to love her back.
** In "Tangled vs Frozen'', saying she's not a person she's a nuisance. Any victim will tell you, dehumanizing your stalker/abuser feels good.
** In ''Film/ThePhantomOfTheOpera2004'', Critic calls Hyper out four times for various things (her ego, her manipulations, the SelfServingMemory and [[spoiler: chasing him while she's with Devil Boner]]) [[note]]five if you count his insult that ''Theatre/LoveNeverDies'' is so awful it sounds like her fanfic[[/note]] and while she's seen as pitiable for her many issues, he never gets treated as in the wrong.
** Even in ''Cinderella: Old vs New'' when he actually wants Hyper there (just as a different opinion, not as a person) and she's officially (for now) over him, he's allowed to not be okay with her and insults her more than a few times for what she's done to him.
** In the ''Film/MadMaxFuryRoad'' review, a lot of people (especially women) [[http://thatchickwiththegifs.tumblr.com/post/129740013705 loved]] Devil Boner's TheReasonYouSuckSpeech on the {{straw misogynist}}s for this reason. It helps that Doug's said a fair chunk of this AsHimself already. It's even cathartic for the female characters in-universe, who had to deal with the meninists hurling abuse at them all episode.
** While he still gets away with abuse, it's pretty great to see Uncle Lies get a mini BreakTheHaughty for being so condescending in the Amadeus editorial.
** Most times that Tamara or Malcolm manage to get their own back on Critic for his bad treatment of them are this, and Doug has mentioned that people not on their side creep him out a bit.
** Chester's rant at the end of ''Dreamcatcher''. Both for Critic being called out, and for people with mental issues who relate.
** In the real thoughts of ''Film/TheHaunting'', the first one after the loss of their mom, Doug says he needs to get angry at the film to get energy back, and Rob compares the hate for the film for the grief he'll feel forever.
** For some, especially those who didn't like the hounding in TRMGO, Doug's irritated appearance in ''Film/TheLastAirbender'', complaining at Critic for "why did I write you so stupid".
** Filmed before the 2016 election results but released after, the "TMNT 2" behind the scenes has plenty of Trump bashing, with Andre, Doug and James mocking his voice, Tamara gleefully calling herself a nasty woman (and Doug being called a nasty critic in the same vein) and Rob making fun of "nobody has more respect for women than I do" while being glad he's a white man.
** In behind the scenes of ''Ghostbusters'', Rob talked about liberating it is to play an asshole when he's an asshole already.
** Both Devil Boner and Critic beating up the Deadpool cosplayer sexually harassing Hyper at the end of ''Green Lantern'', with Critic moralling to not use cosplay as an excuse to be an asshole.
* CharacterRerailment: Critic was… weird in the first couple of seasons of reboot, proud to be a sexist, hitting kids and making pedophile jokes with no shame. Starting in about 2015 though he seemed to gradually get back on track, still a TroubledAbuser MetaGuy, but trying to be good even when he can’t quite manage it.
* CommonKnowledge: Some of the feedback Doug got for his Disneycember review of ''Hercules'' was that he criticized the movie for its visuals and tone being based on Las Vegas, which was met with flak as people think that critique was ridiculous since Vegas's appearance was based on Greek. What Doug actually meant was that he thinks the film was taking ideas that don't go together such as the fact that Gerald Scarfae, who was the animation director for ''[[Music/TheWall Pink Floyd's The Wall]]'' came up with the designs for the movie and thinks that his work doesn't fit a movie having a modern Vegas visual and tone.
* ContinuityLockOut:
** His show is probably one of the most character-based on the site and he's fond of {{plot thread}}s and {{call back}}s first set up from years ago. He's also in ''plenty'' of cameo appearances, which usually tell you things about the character as well. This doesn't apply to the section of fans who watch just for a trashing of a movie.
** The Hyper storyline is long and involved, but they mention that she kidnapped him in every video she's in, which in-universe is because Critic still has issues over it, but out of universe is likely to try and avoid this trope and remind people that he hates her for hurting him, not because she's a fangirl. She's easier to understand in later episodes after the kidnapping arc has been dropped, so she mostly just comes in to represent a contrasting opinion of Critic's, but her relationship with Devil Boner comes across as sudden to anybody who skipped the ''Mad Max'' or ''Phantom of the Opera'' reviews.
** In a fan-induced version, no matter how many times Doug says there was continuity from the beginning and why would you watch if you're not interested in character, you'll find plenty of people who think you can skip a load of episodes and then be confused what Critic is angsting about this time or who are these characters.
** In a crossover-related sense, the appearance of the ''WebVideo/SatelliteCity'' cast at the climax of Doug's ''Music/TheWall'' review drew a lot of confused "wut" reactions from people wondering why Doug was suddenly plunged into a surreal landscape with bizarre CGI creatures. It’s more fun to watch Lucy Lacemaker grope Critic while he looks grossed out when you know she’s a PsychoLesbian who likes to behead ''then'' snuggle.
** Lampshaded by Deadpool in the sequel clipless review, as when Devil Boner comes in, he snarks that he's probably had to follow every episode of Critic to appreciate who this is.
** An extreme example is in ''WebVideo/ToBoldlyFlee'', where one of the main villains is a throwaway character from the ''Film/BattlefieldEarth'' episode who never made a second appearance before ''To Boldly Flee'', who hates Doug for destroying his planet (which isn't even what happens in that episode). If you didn't see that episode (or if you did but forgot about the throwaway gag) and/or never watched ''Battlefield Earth'', you would have no idea who he was or what he was a reference to.
* CreepyAwesome: Tamara in the ''Film/TheWickerMan2006'' review. Critic calls her every word for crazy under the sun but ends up attracted to her, and Doug later on talked about how there's usually backlash with new people/things but 90% of audience loved her in that episode.
* CriticalBacklash:
** The ''Bart's Nightmare'' LP has a lot of issues (not seeing the Critic's face when he's breaking down, the joke was too obvious, the video was overly long, obviously done because Doug was on vacation and needed to get something out etc.), but most agree that it isn't as bad as Doug's constant apologies are making it out to be.
** Some people can't understand why the “Raiders Of The Story Arc: Transformers” episode is worth apologizing twice over either, as they thought it was funny, a sweet look back on the franchise and he ripped on Bay's sexism without ripping on the man himself like in later episodes.
* CrossesTheLineTwice:
** Critic's "Tickle Me Amy" doll in ''Congo'' manages this within the space of 30 seconds.
** Putting up pictures of starving children that could have been saved with the money wasted on ''Film/TankGirl'', and then dubbing it a "[[BigLippedAlligatorMoment Big Lipped Starving Children Moment]]".
** In his review of ''Series/FullHouse'', the Critic impersonates Danny giving Stephanie a talk about periods: "You may see your body as something unnatural or possessed... because it is. Stop it. ''Right now''".
** Some gags are just painful to watch, like the "Heil Hitler" scene parody in the Captain America video, but goes on for so long that it gets bizarre and one can't help but to let out one laugh.
** This is expected whenever [[AbusiveParents Aunt Despair and Uncle Lies]] are onscreen, particularly in ''Home Alone 2'' (Uncle Lies [[BlatantLies denying that they abandoned Bum Jr.]] because "we remember the children we abandon," then less than a minute later telling Cliff they'll abandon him just like they abandoned Bum Jr, and later in the episode Aunt Despair shares a conspiracy theory that 9/11 was done by ''Satanists'') and ''X-Men'' (where the errands they have to run turn out to be chasing a puppy who swallowed government secrets, creating [=STDs=], and bringing prostitutes back from the dead).
* CryForTheDevil:
** Critic going catatonic at the end of ''Film/TheShining''. Even Rachel and Malcolm who he abused all episode feel bad.
** While she's still doing awful and not regretting what she's done to Critic, if you're not feeling sorry for Hyper's mental illness at the end of ''Film/ThePrincessDiaries 2'', you will by ''Film/ThePhantomOfTheOpera2004''.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:D-G]]
* DesignatedHero:
** ''Turbo'' can't seem to decide whether Critic should be glorified or not. On the one hand, he's called whiny multiple times, he gets set on fire, and there's a big portion where everyone complains at him for not being honorable. On the other hand, that complaining section could be taken as ''Franchise/PowerRangers'' characters being stupidly naive, Zordon shills his criticism of the film as "restoring braincells to the viewers", and his BlatantLies of not being afraid of any movie never get called out.
** A lot of people were confused about Hyper in ''Christmas Story II'' still acting terrible (even lampshaded by Benny in the episode) but Santa Christ being on her side with Critic being forced to apologize, but the behind the scenes helps with SC just being a troll, and Doug at Midwest Medio Expo saying you weren't meant to be on her side. Hyper herself is too self-serving to apologize, but her hate comments video show she ''does'' feel guilt over that episode, [[NeverMyFault squirming she was going through a bad time]].
** Lampshaded in-universe with Critic, Nerd and Black Nerd in ''TMNT 2'', as Malcolm and Tamara save the day and they want to have the "cowabunga" moment, but know they haven't earned it.
* DesignatedLoveInterest: Lampshaded InUniverse. During ''Matrix Month'', Tamara's Trinity {{expy}} character informs that she is the Critic's love interest, despite the fact that the two have ''never'' interacted alone together beforehand. Hilariously, he's not even the first Messiah she's hit on.
* DesignatedMonkey: The Critic himself sometimes gets abused whenever he doesn't deserve it or is simply minding his own business. In the reboot, he shares (or does the designating himself) this with Rachel, Malcolm and Tamara, who Doug has tried to get people to realize that they're victims of Critic.
* DesignatedVillain: The Ghost of Christmas Future in the ''Babes in Toyland'' review is not presented as evil, but the Critic sure thinks he is. It turns out that the Ghost's entire motivation is to get the Critic to do a crossover ''Christmas Carol'' special with other Channel Awesome reviewers.
* DontShootTheMessage: Most people agree completely with his hatred of HorribleHollywood, copyright watchdogs, and executives thinking that kids are dumb. The problem comes from the overly preachy speeches regarding all this, the {{straw character}}s, and the fact that he never stops talking about it.
* DracoInLeatherPants:
** Nice to know that fangirls will forgive you anything if you're cute and cry pretty. The “forgive him anything” part was referenced in the ''WesternAnimation/{{The Lorax|2012}}'', as his straw fangirl gets mad at him for insulting what she likes but then is quick to still adore him.
** Out of universe, Doug has mocked people for thinking Critic is nicer in reboot, from being disturbed that some of fandom is on his abusive side instead of Malcolm/Tamara's, to acknowledging that "you'll be better now" was a BrokenAesop in his review of ''The Review Must Go On''. There was also the ''Kranks'' speech, where he reminds people that CharacterDevelopment isn't always positive.
** Due to an infantile personality, a [[MaleGaze tight shirt]] and abuse[=/=]{{angst}} on Critic's part, fans tend to forget that Evilina's meant to be, well, ''evil''.
** Despite Critic outright calling him a sadist, people still want to believe Santa Christ was his usual messiah-like self in ''Film/SonOfTheMask''. And again in ''Devil'' where he was even worse but people chose to believe he wasn't himself at all in the review. Doug and Rob had to joss that in the commentary, stating for the record that the devil only pretended to be him at the end.
** Because of a whole lot of {{double standard}}s (HollywoodHomely, HystericalWoman, StalkingIsFunnyIfItIsFemaleAfterMale) and because her SkewedPriorities in terms of forgiveness are TruthInTelevision, a large percent of people find the Hyper Fangirl either relatable or adorable. [[http://solowoohooinpillowfort.tumblr.com/post/119097902080/hyper-fangirl-complains-about-her-and-nc-being This post]] is a good sum-up of people ignoring all the shit she's done and hating Critic for yelling at her, something that Doug has brought up himself. On Tamara's part, she does the heavy balancing of adoring playing Hyper, identifying with her excitedness and knowing she's an utter ass who has pulled bad shit.
* EnsembleDarkHorse:
%% ** Ma-Ti, so much so that he got [[WebVideo/SuburbanKnights two]] [[WebVideo/ToBoldlyFlee movies]] where he had [[HeroicSacrifice huge]] [[WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds roles]].
%% ** Also, Orlando Belisle, Jr. who had portrayed the Critic's Guardian Angel as well as [[spoiler:[[WebVideo/SuburbanKnights Malachite]]]].
** Post-revival, we have [[{{Satan}} the Devil]] and [[{{Moe}} Evilina]], who gained a good deal of fanart shortly after their ''Son of the Mask'' appearance and possibly set the precedent for recurring characters in the reboot.
** After the ''Wicker Man'' review Tamara has become one, mostly because - as Critic lampshades - she's a FandomNod to everyone who wants to see him get punished or yelled at for acting badly. Her cosplays and story videos got her personal channel a fandom of its own. Like Jim, she got her own series, using her PopCulturalOsmosisFailure and cats to her advantage.
** Devil Boner was only in ''Film/SmallSoldiers'' for about five seconds, and already he's got swooning girls and fanart. It's Doug as a bad boy in leather though, so it should have been expected. He returns in “Ghost Rider 2”, and is even more catering to AllGirlsWantBadBoys, calling himself “snuggly and soft” and angsting that his mom never loved him. He gets his ADayInTheLimelight episode in ''Film/MadMaxFuryRoad'', and his popularity went even higher when he and Hyper turned out to be an adorably evil OneTruePairing.
** Benny the assassin, for being another (after Tacoma and the Devil) character that actually plays to Malcolm's strengths of being charming, serious when needed, and the OnlySaneMan. Doug actually mentions in the ''Christmas Story II'' behind the scenes that people loved Benny more than they did Hyper, and he was the one they really wanted back. He even comes back (though unseen) without her in ''Spawn,'' and after starring in the CatFight subplot of ''Old Vs New Cinderella'' he becomes the supporting character again in the Hyper Boner story.
** The rockstar version of Jesus in the "I FUCKING LOVE CHRISTMAS" number at the end of the critic's Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer review. The reason is because it portrays our lord and savior as a [[JesusWasWayCool badass rockstar who can shred mad riffs]].
** Curiosa, the Furiosa parody in ''Film/MadMaxFuryRoad''. Tamara is made up to look exactly like Charlize Theron, right down to the prosthetic arm, and she's a badass who manages the rare feat of arguing with Critic and ''not'' turning into a StrawCharacter. Being a counterpoint to [[FemaleMisogynist Hyper]] helps too.
** The abusive Ask That Guy-like father Uncle Lies and his wife Aunt Despair. Doug and Tamara both love writing/acting them, [[https://twitter.com/tcwtgifs/status/703630695151710208 some want a spin-off]], and it helps that they're both interesting and played in the same “mock the abuser for how evil and pathetic they are, not the victim who gets scared by them” spirit as Ask That Guy's show. Even their three kids[[note]]Hyper Fangirl eventually revealed to be a fourth[[/note]] are loved, because they all show different and realistic reactions to their trauma.
** Jim Jarosz was called "the guy that's probably better than everyone else" in the Honest Trailer parody, and he got [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9VrpRzrEDBc his own show]] with showing how he makes all the props.
** People really like when the ''WebVideo/AwesomeComics'' team shows up, Walter popular as Zac Snyder and even Tamara loved having Aiyanna and Heather around in ''Film/AlvinAndTheChipmunks''. Heather's popularity in particular skyrocketed since she runs and does most of the streaming on the Channel Awesome Website/{{Twitch}} channel.
** Doe, Chester's girlfriend. She's very {{moe}} and they're adorable together. Her being a MamaBear over her adopted daughter in the ''Home Alone 2'' review only helped her image.
** In a rarity for a RememberTheNewGuy parody, Bill. He doesn't talk, but what helps is that he's a genuine NiceGuy in a cast full of messes, and looks after Critic, served as Hyper Boner's couples therapist, replaces the Joker as Harley's boyfriend and is another EnsembleDarkhorse's (Benny's) brother. Granted, most of these are [[ParodySue jokes about his nature,]] but that's all the more reason for the fandom to joke about how he's the most well-developed character on the show.
** Chaplin, a black and white cat that Doug got in late 2018, has joined [[WebVideo/TamarasNeverSeen Ike]] and [[WebVideo/TheCinemaSnob Lloyd]] in the trio of adored cats, and Doug is a proud daddy who'll put his kitty in every episode or ad that he can. He also makes cameos in a few first viewings, popping in and out for a good stretch on Doug’s lap. Then in 2020, Doug got another cat, Buster, and he's just as beloved, especially since he was still a [[CuteKitten kitten]] when Doug adopted him.
* EsotericHappyEnding: Maybe just to spoof the film (seeing as both the review and film were dark with sappy endings) but ''A.I.''. Critic did the sappy speech and the TMZ crew got their comeuppance, but Critic came off like a homophobic DesignatedHero {{hypocrite}}, and TMZ became UnintentionallySympathetic. Doug at least somewhat realized this, admitting the episode was too cruel in commentary, redoing a better version of the speech in ''Film/AliceInWonderland2010'' and the next episode ("Master Of Disguise") putting all the focus on Critic being abusive and crazy.
* EstrogenBrigade:
** In the ''Princess Diaries II'' commentary, Doug and Malcolm talk about how intensely popular Devil Boner and Benny are, and guess it's because of this. When it comes to Devil Boner, even Tamara and Beth love him for how he's so RealMenWearPink, the former {{squee}}ing in the ''Film/MadMaxFuryRoad'' commentary about how great he is and the latter being really happy in ''Film/ThePhantomOfTheOpera2004'' commentary that he and Hyper are an OfficialCouple.
** And of course Critic/Doug has always had a big one ever since show started, being a soft looking, animated guy with big blue eyes and who knows how to play to the FemaleGaze.
** Rob grew a full beard in late 2018, and has got numerous compliments on looking really good with it.
* EvilIsCool:
** While he gets punished with castration at the end, Zod in the ''Film/ManOfSteel'' review. Just seeing him for the first time makes Critic jump back in terror.
** The Devil. Malcom does a pretty good job acting as an AffablyEvil NobleDemon.
** Even Hyper, TragicVillain that she is, gets some cool points in the ''Cinderella Old vs New'', being respected by her boyfriend enough to be called things like "skullcrusher".
** Devil Boner. He has a sweet feminist progressive side and a violent PsychoForHire side, and manages the rare feat of both sides not clashing.
** Tamara in ''Film/TheWickerMan2006'' to the point where Critic gives her a job because of it, and any other time she brings her sadist-vengeful side back out.
* FandomEnragingMisconception:
** Referring to Doug's most well-known character as the Nostalgi'''c''' Critic is a surefire way to get yourself flamed to a crisp on the site's forums.
** After their three big conversations in ''WebVideo/ToBoldlyFlee'', “The Review Must Go On” and “The Last Airbender”, you'll be considered completely obnoxious if you still call Critic “Doug” and vice versa.
** Calling Tamara (or Rachel) a fake geek girl "who haven't seen anything" will get you mocked hard by the women themselves, Malcolm and Doug.
* {{Fanon}}:
** With the preaching to {{straw character}}s, character!Malcolm and Tamara nowhere to be found despite making him do the film (replaced instead of MagicalNegro Black Willy Wonka and [[StrawFan Hyper]]), a completely different location and the MoodWhiplash from a run of "Critic has issues" episodes, a lot of people think that (with Critic being confirmed to be a RealityWarper in Matrix Month) ''WesternAnimation/{{The Lorax|2012}}'' is his version of Santa Christ's "You're a Rotten Dirty Bastard", warping characters and things to go his way.
** A lot of people think that Black Willy Wonka enjoys being Chart Guy 2 when he wants to make people miserable through charts, and is himself when he wants to make them miserable through trolling.
** People like to think that Doe, Chester's new girlfriend, is the "Got Milk" girl from the 2013 Commercials. This would mean they met when she was at her lowest, Rachel and Heather look similar, and the woman deserved to have a happy ending.
* FanonDiscontinuity: Those who aren't fans of the reboot like to consider that the series has ended in 2012 and that nothing has come afterwards, which considering that the series has been rebooted wouldn't be too far fetched to do.
* FanficFuel:
** Critic being Hyper's terrified CaptiveDate for two weeks, with vague mentions of horrible things happening and Doug/Rob snarking later that her logic was like Christian Grey's, was custom-made for the fandom's love of DarkFic. Malcolm saying in Midwest Media Expo that Benny would also stalk Critic if he could, just made it better/worse.
** In a tumblr post, Tamara lampshaded that all her characters fall in love with a Doug character, which makes for some interesting ship options.
** The abuse family are essentially a villainous version of HeroOfAnotherStory and have plenty of opportunities for fanfic and headcanons, especially with AscendedFanon that Hyper is Aunt Despair's daughter.
** Hyper Boner's relationship. They've moved in together by ''Phantom of the Opera'' and they have must have a lot of fun that we don't see given that it's [[AxCrazy them]] and he calls her "skullcrusher". Her Q&A confirming Benny also lives with them only provides more possibility.
** Hyper Boner get married in "Chipwrecked", with Benny as Best Man and Critic as Hyper's butler of honor (with Tamara tweeting that he was pissed off with his role), leaving a ton of room for fandom to fic the build up.
* FanNickname:
** [=NuCritic=] for the episodes produced after ''The Review Must Go On''.
** Satan's nickname to the fandom is 'Mr. Zebub', after Critic called him that in one episode. It sort of stuck as an AffectionateNickname.
** Doug's father, Barney, is mostly known as "Papa Walker".
** The “sweater family” for the couple consisting of an abusive, oblivious yellow-jumper-wearing father; an aged purple-jumper-wearing, coke-addicted, chain-smoking, alcoholic mother; and their poor kids. Uncle Lies often gets named Uncle ATG (or occasionally the portmanteau Uncle Ask That Lies) because the two characters have been confirmed by Doug to be the same. Or Daddy Ask That Guy by people who like to sin.
* FoeYayShipping: Within a day of the episode showing, fangirls were shipping Mara Wilson and Critic. In their defense, he has a habit of having [[WebVideo/TheNostalgiaChick pretty women putting him in his place]] [[WebVideo/ObscurusLupa and making him suffer]].
* FountainOfMemes: Despite still doing them to make fans happy, Doug's not exactly happy about this reputation. At a con Q&A where people were particularly obnoxious with their requests, he had to plead for some actual ''questions'' instead.
** He's also so bitter about the bat credit card that it's given him a TwitchyEye, but fandom hears that and just make him do it more.
** A couple of 2012 panels (when the irritation with Bat Credit Card and company started to be explicit) would do a “meme minute”, a minute where people would shout memes, he'd do them and then no other meme questions would be allowed.
** Deconstructed in ''The Guyver'', as Sage tries to use old memes to make Critic feel more at ease, but “of course!” doesn't work because Critic's set on making “platypus bunny” a thing, and the LosingHorns nearly works, with Critic enjoying that one, but it's ruined by Sage making a “feeling nostalgic?” pun.
** Slammed again in his ''Film/JurassicParkIII'' review, as he hates this reputation so much that he's traded bad dreams for “night-memes”, nightmares about memes that he swore he'd never do again but [[PastExperienceNightmare keep popping up]], in this case Dino-Rob.
** He tells Film Brain in ''Forest Warrior'' that he can't do the Chuck Norris gag because that was the old him, and the new version wants new obnoxious memes to be associated with himself.
** One of the many reasons he hates his 2007 self (beyond homo/transphobia, whining and unwillingness to try anything new) is his overreliance on forcing crappy memes.
* FranchiseOriginalSin:
** The reboot's penchant for more offensive jokes isn't new, if you go back to 2007/2008 videos you can see a lot of casual rape jokes, homophobic jokes and sexist jokes (like the Hottest Women list calling sexual harassment fun). Thing is, he got better with that – ''Film/PatchAdams'' for instance spent a lot of time pointing out the misogyny of the film, HomoeroticSubtext increased, and there's even been reboot episodes like ''Fury Road'' that have abusive men as the villains – so people are really just confused why episodes like ''Catwoman'' and ''Anime/SailorMoon'' exist.
** Reviews on later films. The Critic did review films from the 2000s prior to the retool, but the difference there is they were usually from the earliest part of the decade (2000-2002) with a few movies occasionally being from after such as ''Film/BabyGeniuses'' (2004) or ''WesternAnimation/{{TMNT}}'' (2007). The difference was that these were either special requests or one-offs, or they were still relevant to "nostalgic" media, typically being reboots. He would also often talk about characters, films, and specials from later times in his countdown lists, but this was usually given more leeway due to still featuring nostalgic works as well being mixed in. Now in his modern videos, he primarily talks about movies from the later 2000s and 2010s and even movies still in theaters (the latter of which he promised not to review, only to break it in protest of the video takedowns), which has made some people wonder why it's still called "The Nostalgia Critic" due to it being an ArtifactTitle.
** The [[TakeThat jabs at things Doug Walker doesn't like]]. The Critic has always employed these jabs, it's just that the newer reviews use them a lot more often, and they tend to be ''much'' harsher.
** It was pretty obvious from the beginning that Doug Walker has basically no formal education in film or film analysis; going back to his first reviews, many of them had pretty shallow criticism, bad research, or him missing the point. It wasn't problematic in his early days because he was both [[FairForItsDay one of the only games in town in terms of video-based film reviews and analysis, especially considering his schedule]], and he (by nature of his format) chose films that were soft targets for criticism and not widely discussed or defended, like ''Film/BatmanAndRobin'' or ''Film/TheGarbagePailKidsMovie''. When he started doing reviews of recent or popular films, the limitations of his style and skills as a reviewer became a lot more evident, especially with the dozens of film critique and review channels by people who actually studied film professionally or as a hobby, be they students, critics, or even filmmakers, that have popped up in the intervening years - or, for that matter, Website/ChannelAwesome, becoming a hub for those people. All of this came to a head with his widely-panned review/parody of the 1982 film adaptation of Music/PinkFloyd's ''Music/TheWall'', which received plentiful criticism for providing only surface-level analysis of the movie, failing to demonstrate proper research (such as apparently ignoring the fact that the album predated the movie by roughly 3 years), and missing much of the point of the original album. Even in light of Walker making it clear that he himself enjoyed the album and simply thought the movie was a bit full of itself at times, his video on ''The Wall'' has been touted as a microcosm of several long-persisting issues with his content that made themselves more than apparent here. It doesn't help that the focus of the show has obviously shifted from laughing at the character's bad critiques to expecting the audience to take his word as gospel no matter what, nor does the fact that Doug apparently disregards his own criticisms whenever he feels like it.
** [[SpecialEffectFailure The weaknesses in the show's filming (bad special effects, amateur cinematography, cheap production values)]] are a weird case, in that [[ArtEvolution they've undeniably improved from where they were when the series began]]. But when the series began, it was one guy in front of a camera riffing on movie clips; the humor came from the movie first, the guy's jokes second, and any sketches or stuff that required actual filming a distantly third bonus. When later reviews, especially post-revival, upped the number and length of those sketches considerably (to the point of taking up the entire review in reviews of recent films, due to Doug's policy of recreating clips as sketches rather than waiting for the home release[[note]]presumably due to him not wanting to be ScrewedByTheLawyers[[/note]]), while they did improve, their lacking quality became a lot more evident. It also became a lot harder to use StylisticSuck as a defense when the Critic has become a more legitimate enterprise with a studio and an actual budget, but still uses the same cheap Halloween costumes and bad green screen.
** Doug's humor as well. While a lot of it came from the Critic reacting to the movie, being based around a ManChild who hates any film he watches, it's only gotten a ''lot'' more harsh as well since the revival. The Critic is also not the one mostly getting hurt, as ''he'' more causes pain to others rather than getting hurt himself. The Critic used to get a considerable amount of LaserGuidedKarma than he currently does for acting like an ass, but now other people do who probably didn't even deserve it. Considering most other review shows like his generally have the hosts being nice people that the audiences can latch on to, this only stands out further.
** One of the most base-breaking aspects of the post-2013 videos are the MidReviewSketchShow {{cutaway gag}}s, with many feeling that they take too much time away from the reviews. However, sketches are nothing new to the series and have been featured since the early days, and some episodes from what's considered the "classic" era like ''Film/HomeAlone3'' featuring recurring segments that wouldn't feel too out of place in the modern videos. The older series even had a few episodes that were entirely sketches, such as the Teddy Ruxpin one, though they were fewer and far between.
* GeniusBonus: In a dark version (even he thinks it's too far), Critic in ''Christmas Story II'' tells Hyper that if she doesn't leave him alone, she'll lose her head in a cornfield, in reference to a mafia group beheading their rivals in a cornfield. [[note]]google links to bestgore.com so look up at your own risk[[/note]]
* {{Glurge}}:
** There's a couple of moments between Evilina and Critic in ''Film/TheCatInTheHat'' that are meant to be sweet, particularly after his big speech (which some also considered to be this), where she tugs on his clothes and tells him she likes the book better. Problems that ruin the effect of this? He keeps calling her "kiddo" or "child", which just sound weird for him, for the most part they pissed each other off, and last but not least, he hit her in the back of her head and told her to stop crying.
** Even people who are American and loved ''WesternAnimation/SouthPark'' felt like he was projecting and going too far into {{eagleland}} at his number one pick where he said that "the country needed ''South Park'' after 9/11 because it taught them to laugh again". He could have done what he did for "[[Recap/TheSimpsonsS2E1BartGetsAnF Bart Gets An F]]", just admitted that it affected him personally, and it would have been as emotional as he wanted. The {{straw fan}}s following the common episode trend for having zero humanity for his "touching speech" didn't help either.
** ''WesternAnimation/{{The Lorax|2012}}'' review went overboard on the preachy speeches for a lot of people. ''Film/TheCatInTheHat'' had at least EvilVersusEvil and NightmareFuel to offset reboot's typical “Critic makes a cloying-music-backed speech to a straw villain” formula, and Critic being the hero to executives again felt like he was a DesignatedHero after he got called out for TookALevelInJerkass by everyone from Rachel to Sage.
** Especially for people who loved Critic's speeches to Hyper about how awful she's been and that she doesn't actually care about him, and seeing how the last time they did this he was a CaptiveDate, the piano-backed montage of them laughing about how bad ''Christmas Story 2'' is, followed by them sleeping on the couch and her snuggling on his shoulder, was way overdoing it on the cheese. The behind the scenes, with Tamara and Doug thinking Hyper would slit her and Critic's throats to preserve the moment, cuts it right down though.
* GratuitousSpecialEffects:
** In the ''Film/AliceInWonderland2010'' commentary, Doug thought these were to the review's detriment, as he had to choose between working on making the ending as TearJerker as he wanted it to be or editing the effects, and only had time for the second option.
** Most of the TMNT movie review is Critic/Nerd against interactive video game green-screens.
** ''Film/MadMaxFuryRoad'' review took ''three weeks'' of building the props and sets, which just goes to show how much they loved the film and wanted their clipless version to be as affectionate as possible.
* GrowingTheBeard:
** The early videos are incredibly slow-paced, he shouts more, the jokes aren't fantastic and the character isn't exactly interesting. But then he starts challenging the Nerd and the quality in everything improves from there.
** The Nostalgia Critic started out reviewing parts of the movies, and not the entire thing, but as his videos went on, the jokes eventually developed and the reviews eventually covered more of the story. While still fairly low by say, television standards, his production values have increased dramatically since starting the site. His review schedule has been consistent too.
** The Critic really started catching fire around the time of ''Film/BatmanAndRobin'', probably the most solid of his early reviews and one of the first done expressly for the site.
** The tail end of 2008/start of 2009, with less casually bigoted jokes (for example, ''Red Sonja'' has an apology for using the "retarded" slur so much in earlier years), more character stuff that would stick around (like love for Christmas, PTSD over childhood, issues regarding gender etc) and more interaction with other TGWTG members like the Chick.
** Before ''Film/TheGarbagePailKidsMovie'' review, the Critic was quick to caustically declare practically each and every film he reviewed as the worst film that he had ever seen. After ''The Garbage Pail Kids Movie'' review, he began to take a slightly more analytical approach to his reviews, with the reasoning being that he was ''never'' going to see a film as bad as that one again.
** Talking about ''Film/MoulinRouge'' at Midwest Media Expo and other times, Doug calls that episode the one where he realized two things: that Critic should be wrapped up and should have a good FinaleSeason, and that he never wanted to be the guy who got pissy in front of a white wall again.
** Post-revival, the show has seen a noticeable rise in production values. Doug now has the benefits of a studio instead of just a corner in his living room, a larger cast and an extra week to work on episodes since he decided to release a new review every fortnight instead of once a week.
** In terms of clipless reviews, ''Pixels'' onwards was seen as far more confident than ''Jurassic World'' (as even in that review Critic acknowledged it was all over the place), as they had Critic playing with everyone else and not just (screeching a lot) in front of a wall, expressing thoughts in more of a creative and in-depth way, being big on effects and story and less bitterness about copyright. In the ''Pixels'' commentary, Doug agrees with this sentiment.
** A lot of people dislike 2013, with more bigoted bitter jokes, Critic floating around as a character and aimless or depressing sketches. Then Tamara came in and it seemed to rejuvenate things, with clearer {{plot thread}}s, Critic knowing that he's sad and evil and Doug talking about how he's using the skits as self-help/analyzing.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:H-J]]
* HeartwarmingInHindsight:
** In the ''Double Dare'' tribute, his admiration for Mark Summers doing the show when he had OCD, becomes even nicer when Doug's talked about his own OCD a lot in vlogs.
** His thanking ''X-Men'' in his top 11 Nostalgic Animated TV Shows for giving hope to kids who were different becomes more powerful when Doug said in vlogs that he used to worry about being so different that he'd be hated by everyone.
** Over on the old forums, Doug and Rob regretted Critic’s He-Man episode, thinking it lazily homophobic and it was after this episode that Critic ended up gayer and more feminine. Years later, in his Grading Intros, Critic made a joke implying He-Man was his ClosetKey.
** In ''Mortal Kombat Annihilations'', Chester asks Critic and Ask That Guy to be his friends and Critic disgustedly refuses. It's just nice when it's revealed Critic ''did'' look after Chester by giving him jobs and change.
** While ''[[SillyLoveSongs That Kind of Song]]'' from the ''Les Miserábles'' review already had the RealitySubtext of Paul and Elisa already being engaged when it was made, the part where they mention picking their first baby's name and come up with name suggestions becomes even sweeter with the birth of their son Grey.
** Dr Smith expressing concern in ''It'' over Critic's drinking becomes better after you find out [[spoiler: that he's Critic's dad and the woman he married was an AlcoholicParent]].
** The first commercials special with Critic being comforted from a breakdown by commercials gets more weight when you hear Doug in cons talk about having a DVD of commercials that genuinely calmed him down when he was feeling bad.
** For ''WesternAnimation/AdventureTime'' vlogs, there's something sweet about how in ''The Limit'', Doug says his wife never watches the vlogs, but not long after there are a lot of times when she actually goes with him to Jason/Jori's house.
** As twisted as it is, Tamara giving Malcolm the boost to get back at his boss in ''Film/TheWickerMan2006''. While she's just being manipulative at this point and might not have cared about previous abuse, as soon as ''Disney Afternoon'' she's legit concerned about the way Critic treats him.
** In the ''WesternAnimation/TheSwanPrincess'' review, the Critic says that he would probably stop making [[TakeThat Take Thats]] toward Creator/BlueSkyStudios if they made something good. Come November 2015, Doug [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6E4sTpp8JMU positively reviews]] ''WesternAnimation/ThePeanutsMovie''.
** In the real thoughts on ''Freddy vs Jason'', filmed before Cubs won in 2016, Doug being pleased if they win and shyly going "it's a honor to be nominated" if they don't.
** The first couple of Devil Boner's appearances where he prides himself as being "snuggly and soft" play that off as an ironic joke (since he says it after blowing someone up), but after he starts dating (and eventually marries) Hyper, we see [[UnderstandingBoyfriend there is truth]] [[SickeninglySweethearts to that statement.]]
** In one of the Commercials reviews, he parodied the [[MoodWhiplash sheer bluntness]] of a Canadian rape awareness PSA by doing a similarly benign PSA where Malcolm's character casually revealed having Pancreatic Cancer. Whether you thought it was tasteless [[CrossesTheLineTwice or not]], it takes an interesting turn when he ends his ''Old vs. New: Franchise/EvilDead'' with a shout out to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
** In their failure date, his breaking down and asking WebVideo/TheNostalgiaChick if she cares about him. She doesn't answer and they both run off by the end of the episode, but by this point we know he's basically the only guy who she unselfishly cares for.
** The Critic released an episode on his review of ''Film/ScoobyDoo''. The episode ended with [[spoiler: the Critic playing poker with Rob, 80s Dan, and The Ghost of Christmas Future]]. While this in itself is a touching moment, it becomes even more heartwarming with Doug's announcement that this was the final regular episode of the show (until it resumed in Febuary of 2013). The Critic also gets a very touching send-off in WebVideo/ToBoldlyFlee.
** In the ''Film/BatmanVSupermanDawnOfJustice'' review, Angry Joe goes on a rant about how Superman's death is unearned due to him being mainly used for only 2 movies while being OutOfFocus in both of them, making it obvious that the drama from [[BackFromTheDead his death is nothing more than cheap melodrama and he is going to come back in the future]]. He then goes on about how if TheHeroDies is going to happen, he has to undergo CombatBreakdown while fighting the battle of his life instead of an AntiClimax which gives the audience tension that their hero is really going to kick the bucket this time, the funeral has to be surrounded by his family, friends and colleagues while having a connection built with the audience over many movies. [[spoiler:''Film/AvengersEndgame'' would have Iron Man fit every one of those criteria, meaning that Angry Joe got what he wanted and it's a heartwarming one to see it become a reality. Angry Joe himself even lampshades it in his own review of ''Avengers: Endgame'' stating its what he hoped for Superman's funeral to have been.]]
** In the ''Film/BluesBrothers2000'' review, Critic talks up the Hollywood Blvd Cinema with the Blues Brothers statue on the roof as a huge symbol of Chicago. In 2017, the clipless reviews of ''Film/SuicideSquad2016'' and ''Film/It2017'' were shown in that theater.
** Hyper has a rambling speech in her Q&A about how she and Devil Boner were obviously gonna get married. [[https://www.instagram.com/p/BZhGx6FFla6/?taken-by=thetamaracamera She was right!]]
* SugarWiki/HeReallyCanAct:
** Not just probably being the most in-fully-fledged-character on the site and disregarding ''WebVideo/{{Kickassia}}'' and ''WebVideo/SuburbanKnights'', Doug ''really'' did well in the first commercials special. He even produced [[TearJerker/TheNostalgiaCritic tears]].
** There's something to be said for how many people believe he's really suffering badly in real life when it comes to some of the movies he watches. He's also made fun of people who think he genuinely has any feelings on ''Doug'' or the bat credit card.
** All the more apparent when he interacts with con-goers. Nobody's taking it seriously, but while he's in-character making woobie faces or whatever the situation calls for, if the audience is meant to be - say - an angry mob, they'll be laughing instead.
** The ''Film/ScoobyDoo'' review worked precisely because Doug is excellent at being an emotionally manipulative little bastard. The meltdown at the beginning was so convincing that some people thought at least parts of it were semi-autobiographical.
** Tamara in the “Princess Diaries 2” review. Hyper Fangirl is awful, manipulative, pathetic and scary all at once, and when she's having a breakdown post-AlmostKiss about Critic needing to tell her what he likes so she can like it too, it's genuinely painful to watch.
** Aiyanna in real life has done plenty of stage shows so of course she can act, but Film/MaryPoppinsReturns casts her as a prominent villain (Reboot Mary) for the first time and she’s amazingly SugaryMalice NightmareFuel.
* HoYay:
** Spoony/Critic/Linkara in the ''Film/AloneInTheDark2005'' review. There's one such moment when Spoony forces Critic's computer voice to say "I like wearing women's clothing" (serving as lulzy foreshadowing to [=SWS2=] where he made Critic dress up like a dirty ballerina) and Linkara looks rather interested.
** Partly because Critic/Malcolm has power issues and partly because fangirls/the LGBTFanbase just desperate to have some of the love they got pre-comeback, Critic ''technically'' being subservient to the Devil starting from ''Film/TheCatInTheHat'' got grabbed as the only non-{{Foe Yay|Shipping}} pairing available.
** Zod/Critic got some fuel after ''Film/ManOfSteel'', just because the former made the latter scared and held him hostage at the end. Like the Devil/Critic example, it's all about Critic being subby and suffering because of ''someone''.
** More than a couple of people were expecting Critic-Batman and Joe-Superman to make out when they were gripping each other in ''Film/BatmanVSupermanDawnOfJustice''.
** Analyst 1 (who Doug has already confirmed as gay) gets a pretty flirty tone with Doug's Michael Bay at the end of ''Film/AlvinAndTheChipmunks''.
* HollywoodPudgy:
** In "Nostalgia Critic Talks Transformers 4", Critic asides that he eats junk food and pats his non-existent double chin saying he's not the skinniest guy.
** PlayedForLaughs in ''Film/TheMonsterSquad'' with Jason, as he's supposed to be the fat kid but Critic complains he's supposed to weigh fifty more pounds. Rob then takes his role, and while he's bigger than Doug, he's still a fairly reasonable weight.
** In ''Film/ChristmasWithTheKranks'', Santa Christ pointedly calls 2007-Critic overweight when he isn't really. The behind the scenes push harder, with Doug saying he needed other clothes because he couldn't just double chin it all the time, and he would have got baggier jeans if he'd had more time.
* HollywoodHomely: In the ''Film/ScoobyDoo'' review, young!Critic is supposed to look like a stereotypical teenage boy with spots and everything. Except this is Doug in a black t-shirt and for once an actual decent wig, so it comes as more he just needs a rest and those measles will go away.
** His and young!Critic's comment on pre-fame Creator/IslaFisher in the same film give off this impression as well. Okay, she doesn't look the same as she does post-fame, but it does give that impression.
** Doug tried to make Tamara's Hyper Fangirl as pathetic-looking and unwashed as humanly possible, giving her a mentally ill HystericalWoman personality to match. Didn't quite work, as a load of men (missing the point of the whole ''stalking is bad even when it's female on male'' thing) are calling her adorable or sexy.
* IdiosyncraticShipNaming: With Doug's post giving approval, "internet reviewer boyfriends" is essentially the accepted name for Critic/Snob.
** "Team Critic Kidnappers" is also the tumblr tag name for Benny/Hyper/Devil Boner as a threesome.
* IKnewIt:
** Everyone who thought that Critic was still having job issues and was getting more depressed over the course of 2012 was validated when the big ''Film/ScoobyDoo'' rant came. And after validation arrived the sad, as it was a huge TearJerker.
** When it was announced that he would do a review of the Uncanny Valley movie, fans assumed/hoped that he would go easy on ''Dark Side Of The Internet'' because with producers talking about genuine threats sent to them, Doug would look like a complete prick making fun of that, especially when he's got a lot of fandom issues himself. Sure enough, when Allison talks about the abuse she's received, he's too depressed to do any mocking.
* InformedWrongness:
** He acts like Canada are killjoys for a MoodWhiplash rape PSA, but never acknowledges that, for a statistic as bad as "1 in 2 girls will be sexually abused", getting that message out was far more important. Fixed in "Battle Of The Commercials", where he acknowledges that it's horrifying and he hated the PSA because the subject matter gave him nightmares.
** Critic himself gets this stick in the ''Christmas Story II'' review, telling his stalker kidnapping fangirl that he can't stand her, but she gets upset and he's the one who feels guilty, getting told by Santa Christ that he was a douche (even when he tries to say she did awful things to him) and the ending of the episode implying that he likes her. Notably, as revealed in the behind the scenes, Rob messed up his "you're a douche" line because "I'm so used to her being the douche", and the original Santa Christ scene was considered even meaner. Doug sort of cleared things up in a Midwest Media Expo panel, saying Critic was in the right to yell at her.
* IronWoobie:
** Mainly because of Doug's [[SincerityMode delightful]] obsession with making him look like a pathetic failure most of the time. No matter how many breakdowns, [[GoMadFromTheRevelation rages]] and [[AbusiveParents general crap]] he's [[StalkerWithACrush gone through]], he's strong willed and will always eventually come back fighting.
** Doug says that the Critic is "pathetically proud and proudly pathetic".
** ''Showcased'' in the Film/BabyGeniuses review. He randomly attacks pedestrians for no reason, but we're also hearing his InnerMonologue at the time, and he's ''seriously'' in need of a hug.
** The Cartoon Allstars commentary adds another element to it: he yells at things because he's desperate and scared, not necessarily because he's "rargh, angry".
** Almost ''calculatingly'' done in the promo the Game Heroes did. He's kidnapped, tied up, treated badly, manhandled and is terrified to the point of tears. When was this released? The day ''WebVideo/{{Kickassia}}'' premiered, where the sympathy-inducing bits wouldn't start for a few days yet.
** Reboot!Critic is far more jerkass than woobie (ironically, given the joke that he's on the woobie page in "Why Is Loki So Hot"), but he managed to hit both in ''WesternAnimation/{{Foodfight}}''. On the one hand, as he only did the film for money it's deserved that he didn't get as much as he wanted. On the other, his disgust with being the CashCowFranchise has been made explicit since ''Film/ScoobyDoo'' and it's only fair that he has a tantrum about failing at that too. There's also the Hyper storyline in which he's MasterOfTheMixedMessage for various reasons and has been violent in his refusals, but he's been stalked, hurt, kidnapped (and got very close to StockholmSyndrome) and nobody around him is on his side even though they dislike her too.
** Hyper Fangirl is a creepy, egotistical, melodramatic stalker to the Critic who tries to guilt trip him when he won't sleep with her and is so ''happy'' at the thought of {{mind rape}}ing him, but she's been abused, is taken advantage of by men with more power, has evil voices in her head, is desperate for friends and on that note is severely delusional. Doug has compared her to both Christian Grey and Harley Quinn, characters that mixed together sums this trope up.
** Tamara herself (the character, not the real person). While dangerous and sadistic, she's right a lot of the time about Critic's issues, gets just as much abuse from him, is treated like a wet blanket by Hyper, and in ''Film/TheMonsterSquad'' ''really'' wants to be included, even defeats the monster that was making Critic and the others depressed, and is still called worthless.
** Doug in-universe for a one-off joke in the FreezeFrameBonus book Jason is reading during “The Best Avatar Episodes”. He gives whoever is reading it TheReasonYouSuckSpeech for pausing the video, telling them to die alone because they're awful wastes of life, but then switches, complaining that he's had no food or water for five days, shouldn't be alive and that he loves whoever he's reading this, he's just so tired.
** Aunt Despair, as she's a horrible mother/aunt, but all the behind the scenes talk about her imply that she's a broken down alcoholic who has a reason for giving up on being a decent human.
** In reboot, Santa Christ. TookALevelInJerkass to the extreme, especially when it comes to Critic, but he's a paranoid alcoholic who according to Rob is getting too old, and seeing him get tortured in ''Film/ThePassionOfTheChrist'' is still pretty hard to watch.
* ItsNotSupposedToWinOscars: A common reaction to "Nostalgia Critic Talks Transformers 4". Unlike most uses of this excuse, they've got somewhat of a point, as he acted like anyone who liked it had no interest in the movies he deemed better and had formed their identity based on this franchise. A lot of people watched both this and X-Men, and just felt like seeing things explode for a few hours.
* ItsPopularNowItSucks: An unfortunate consequence of being the headline of the site, with haters saying that "he'll get lots of hits from the [[YesMan lickspittle]] no matter what".
* JustHereForGodzilla:
** Even Doug thinks the main reason why people watch the Critic is to see him work himself into a tantrum, cry and/or get victimized. But he learned the hard way that this is not necessarily the case, as his Let's Play of "Bart's Nightmare" (featuring him playing the horrible SNES game complete with cursing and palpable frustration) was met with... well, less than widespread approval. Thankfully, the next review, ''Film/JamesAndTheGiantPeach'', got it right again with jailtime, meekness and gun-induced HappinessIsMandatory.
** Lampshaded in ''Ghost Rider 2'' when WebVideo/MikeJ says that the Critic is actually quite mediocre at his job, but he's happy to do a video with him because the Critic still pulls in a ton of viewers regardless.
** Noted in “The Uncanny Valley”, as he says [[WebVideo/DemoReel certain shows]] need him in them to survive or the audience won't be able to cope.
** Boasted about in the ''Transformers 4'' crossover, as he reminds Erod that he's the Nostalgia Critic, the original basher of bad nostalgic movies, and his face was the site's logo.
** Also acknowledged in the Don Bluth ad at the end of the ''TMNT Christmas Special'', as he says if everyone who watched him would donate the Dragon's Lair indiegogo, they could make it happen.
** The ''Film/GreenLantern2011'' review is mostly considered significant because of [[spoiler:Hyper Boner's engagement]], which happens at the very end and is mostly unrelated to the rest of the review, rather than the review in general.
** Just count how many people care more about Critic's review of Chipwrecked and not the wedding bookends. Or even the 2018 intro debuting. Not many.
** A lot of people who don't feel much either way for TMNT watched his Rise Of The TMNT video for ''WesternAnimation/AdventureTime'' and ''WesternAnimation/StevenUniverse'' love (with added ''WesternAnimation/GravityFalls'' and ''WesternAnimation/StarVsTheForcesOfEvil''), with an apparent shipping of Lapis/Peridot.
** Most find the surrounding episodes great too, but look in the comments for (mostly) 2019 episodes and you’ll see loads begging for a compilation of Doug’s wacky commercials.

[[folder:L-O]]
* LauncherOfAThousandShips: In the fic world, nearly everyone on the site (even WebVideo/DiamandaHagan, and because they don't want to take away her lesbianism, they just make Critic a girl) has had a go with him. And it's not just limited to the site either.
* LesYay: Tamara and Rachel at the end of the ''Nutcracker 3D'' are sitting next to each other (knowing the internet, that's enough), appear affectionate, and Tamara even leans her head on Tamara's shoulder.
* LGBTFanbase: As {{shirtless scene}}s, HomoeroticSubtext and rants against gay stereotypes increased, so did his LGBT audience. Genderqueer and trans especially had hearts in eyes for his misgendering rant in ''Film/PatchAdams'', and the {{fanon}} that he's genderfluid but is overcompensating towards male because of issues (or is just a trans man) doesn't hurt either.
** He lost a lot of it thanks to some homophobic remarks early in the reboot, but got a fair few back with how gay ''WebVideo/PopQuizHotshot'' is, more Critic/Snob and Critic/Nerd ShipTease, and Doug's comments in vlogs with how gay/trans representation is just ''more fun'' to put in than to leave out. Plus the Chart Guys got rescued from Straw Scrappy Heap by making them an OfficialCouple, and introducing lesbian {{distaff counterpart}}s over on ''WebVideo/AwesomeComics''. Also aside from hurtful missteps (like ''Catwoman'' or ''A.I.''), the positivity about how often crossdressing is in his show also helped.
* LikeYouWouldReallyDoIt:
** Leading up towards ''WebVideo/ToBoldlyFlee'', many people didn't think Doug would really retire the Critic and some even held out hope until he [[http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/thatguywiththeglasses/video-updates/36516-no-more-nostalgia-critic officially stated that it was the end]].
** And then a few months later, [[http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/thatguywiththeglasses/nostalgia-critic/38009-the-review-must-go-on he did this]], playing this trope straight.
* LoveToHate:
** Uncle Lies. He has no redeeming qualities and terrorizes his children, but because the comedy comes from how horrifying he is and not how scared he makes his kids, he's popular. The fact that he's like Ask That Guy if he were a parent doesn't hurt. Aunt Despair for the same reasons, helped by the fact that a lot of people know moms like that in real life, and so hating her is cathartic. And even if you don't, the scenes involving them [[CrossesTheLineTwice cross the line so many times]] it becomes deeply entertaining. Even Corey Taylor [[https://twitter.com/CoreyTaylorRock/status/1102975346259849216 does breathless tweets]] when they’re due to make an appearance.
** The meninists. Especially for female viewers (including Tamara) who find them true to life and think it cathartic when they get their comeuppance.
* MemeticBadass:
** Not only is Santa Christ both Santa and Jesus, he rides a rocket ship (and a Harley!), hangs out with Creator/MrT, played bass guitar for Music/{{Aerosmith}}, and reads stories to sick kids.
** He also atoned for all our sins, saved puppies from a fire, goes surfing in space, makes really good fondue, shoots lasers from his eyes, mends your curtains for free, fights monsters for fun and he also likes pancakes.
** In the review for ''Film/EndOfDays'', he shows up and gives the Critic a Sega Genesis... or a board game, or another awesome random present! No real reason, he's just that awesome.
** He even turned ''[[{{Satan}} the Devil]]'' into a box of [=HoHoHos=].
** Chuck Norris was one for a while. In ''Conquest Of The Commercials'', he's replaced him with Segata, as the latter is “Chuck Norris without the homophobia”.
** The Motherfucking T-Rex from Film/JurassicPark.
* MemeticLoser: While he abuses other people too, Critic himself. Played for laughs in that he’s a ButtMonkey, {{fanservice}} in that views go up when he’s in pain, and tragedy in that he DesperatelyCravesAffection.
* MemeticMolester: Hyper, given her penchant for creepy faces and the fact that any man she's interested in is freaked out. Not to mention the ending of ''Film/SmallSoldiers''.
* MisaimedFandom:
** Some fans seem to forget that the Critic's a manic-depressive, tantruming manchild who reviews crap because he has nothing else in his life.
** It's not just fan''boys'' who are guilty of this. The worst case scenario for fics is that he'll just be an [[BrainlessBeauty air-headed]] [[{{Bishonen}} pretty boy]] who does nothing but [[TheWoobie cry]] and be in [[DistressedDude need of saving]].
** While humor is always subjective, the point of the LP was that Critic thought it was going to be the easiest thing he ever did and so failed miserably like he does at everything. If he did it perfectly, it would have been out of character.
*** Confirmed gently as "Critic's an idiot who has no common sense" by Doug in his commentary.
*** Speaking of the LP, after ''Film/JamesAndTheGiantPeach'' people wanted even ''more'' punishment and apologizing, ignoring that the basic gist of the video was "why is there so much bile for one bad review?".
** Also, his show isn't meant to be about a professional critic, it's humor and reaction first and foremost, and thus complaining about the Nostalgia Critic "not being a real critic" misses the point.
** Critic said very nicely at the end of the first fuck-ups video that you can criticize his mistakes as much as you like, just don't be a jackass like Douchey (who was a parody of the kind of fans who treated the mistakes like they were inexcusable). So what did fans do? Kept on screaming at him, just tagged the messages with "Douchey [=McNitpick=] moment".
** ''Film/Catwoman2004'' (and especially the male academia rant) got him a lot of MRA fans who were then disappointed to go back in pre-comeback Critic/Doug videos and find that both persona and actor thought the idea of being a "[[http://blip.tv/bum-reviews/doug-s-review-of-paranormal-activity-3-5667598 menimist]]" hilarious. Even in comeback years he thinks the same, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlaaisqtv74 saying]] he doesn't care what they're called and that he just thinks they're idiots, and complaining that men do genuinely face issues but [=MRAs=] never talk about them. And in the ''Film/MadMaxFuryRoad'' review, [=MRA=]s are the villains, and the ''Film/{{Ghostbusters 2016}}'' review also portrays them unflatteringly.
** ''WesternAnimation/{{Foodfight}}'' ends with the very spelled out HoistByTheirOwnPetard of Critic's greed for views being his undoing, but most of the comments are calling him a hero for watching it, showing that they either skipped the character bits or just completely missed the point.
** Despite him really not wanting her, and sort of proving his point about fangirls not actually caring about his feelings, just how cute he is, Critic/Hyper Fangirl was shipped as a OneTruePairing from her first appearance. Because of this, Doug stated at [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=by7omfZa3V4 MomoCon]] that he was going to make the storyline as miserable and awful as he could.
** Most of the time, Critic's cruel treatment of Rachel, Malcolm, and Tamara is meant to be seen as disproportionate and abusive, even if it's PlayedForLaughs. Some people believe that Critic's underlings deserve his abuse, even in episodes where they didn't do anything to warrant it, and get mad when they fight back. Doug points this out himself in the "Disney Afternoon" commentary, saying that Critic deserves every comeuppance he gets from being awful to his underlings.
** Film Brain was [[https://twitter.com/FB_BMB/status/535366258540441600 surprised]] and [[https://twitter.com/FB_BMB/status/535366835320156160 disappointed]] to learn how many people wanted to defend Chuck Norris' homophobia. Evidently, Doug was expecting it, writing Critic “supporting” Chuck but being in firm AntiRoleModel land.
** In “Blue Brothers 2000”, Critic's first huge rant about how the movie sucks in comparison to the original takes place while an actual problem is happening in the background (a woman dying, and because he's so wrapped up in bashing he refuses to help) to show how a bad sequel doesn't matter in the long run. [[note]]plus remember his editorial on "When Is A Movie Just A Movie"[[/note]] But because fandom has always had a SuckinessIsPainful problem, they ended up agreeing with his nerd rage.
** Some fans find scenes of his not intended for FanService to be quite visually appealing, such as in his review of ''Purge'' where there was a scene of him in his underwear parodying the SignatureScene from ''Series/BreakingBad''.
* MisaimedMarketing: Of a sort. [[https://www.teepublic.com/stores/channel-awesome You can get]] cutesy pink Hyper t-shirts with the caption “original fangirl”, which is odd as Doug compared her to ''Christian Grey'' and has complained at people for leather pantsing her.
* MisBlamed:
** After Mara Wilson took the Critic down a peg for bitching about ''Film/ASimpleWish'', fans acted like she had been pissed off at Doug for disliking her movies, when in reality she was angry at the ''fans'' harassing her with "lol Critic hates your stuff!"
** People who don't like [[WebVideo/DemoReel where they came from]] will blame Rachel and Malcolm for everything (often in sexist and racist language), even though unlike in Demo Reel, they have no input in the scripts and Rachel said they just show up and get told what to do. Tamara gets the same, even though she wasn't even in the show, just auditioned for it.
** People who hate any particular episode will solely blame Doug and ignore the fact that he co-writes (excepting editorials and the very rare main episode; Rob was quick to point that Doug did ''Anime/SailorMoon'' by himself) everything with Rob, who tends to get selectively ignored quite often.
** Doug and even former producers who don't like him much have to keep telling people that Doug has nothing to do with the management, that it's all Rob and Michaud, and Doug often says that he thinks he's dumb and Michaud is what helps him not go broke. WebVideo/MarzGurl's post [[https://extramana.tumblr.com/post/167217298612/marzgurl-extramana-interview-transcript even mentioned]] relief that Doug being seen as head of CA is less prevalent, because while he and Rob have done bad things, Michaud is the cause of most problems. And Doug was the [[https://www.salon.com/2018/04/22/the-triumph-and-tragedy-of-channel-awesome/ only one]] to say literally anything, not Rob or Michaud, even if it was just apologizing for sets (something definitely solely his fault) and proving they've got better.
* {{Moe}}:
** Cute? Check. Big eyes? Check. Subby? Check. Weak generally? Check. Socially awkward? Check.
** And the young!Critic shown in ''Film/ScoobyDoo'' fits the bill even more, as he's innocent, has high hopes for the future, stores his cuddly toys proudly on his top shelf and shows traces of his older self's PapaWolf tendencies.
** Evilina, especially when she's in cutesy fangirl mode. In ''Ghostbusters'', the meninists exhibit EvenEvilHasStandards and find they can't sexist-trash her when she's excited about the reboot.
** Doe, a cheery GenkiGirl homeless woman who is Chester's girlfriend, and can only insult him by saying he's the prettiest in the world instead of the universe.
** Bum Jr, who goes from TheWoobie when she’s tormented by her parents (including telling her her idol Critic is dead) to homeless but smiley when she’s adopted by Chester and Doe.
* {{Narm}}:
** All the backed-with-sappy-music speeches against straw villains in the reboot. Lampshaded in ''The Master of Disguise'' when he says the movie music's more invested than the actor, and ''Franchise/PowerRangers'' when a monster cuts him off, but the speech in the latter still happens anyway.
** Speaking of speeches that didn't have the benefit of lampshading, they could get a little ridiculous in ''WesternAnimation/{{The Lorax|2012}}''. Like "fad is one letter away from fade" is not exactly a great argument, and for Doug's many talents, he's really not that great at delivering sappy morals [[https://thatchickwiththegifs.tumblr.com/post/85247738473/maybe-they-should-be-confused-hell-maybe-what over shots of trash expanding]].
** Part of the backlash against his review of ''Film/TheWall'' is because of this. Much of it is seen as ridiculous - for all the wrong reasons. The obvious green screen and subpar CGI (especially in "The Trial", where Critic interacts with the ''WebVideo/SatelliteCity'' characters) is perhaps unavoidable, but the effect of Sam Fennah's [[SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome beautifully elaborate and creative animation]] is mostly ruined by the fact that Doug seems to be [[DullSurprise barely summoning up the effort to pretend he's not looking at a green screen.]]
* NarmCharm: Many many episodes of the reboot show that Doug has a big ol' cheesy side. Sometimes it's {{glurge}} when it comes off like Critic’s talking to a cardboard cutout, other times it works cos everyone is passionate as hell.
* NauseaFuel: The ''Christmas Story 2'' eggnog made in the beginning of said review. As the disclaimer says, the boys really did taste the concoction, so Doug is genuinely about to vomit into the sink before credits roll.
-->'''[[WebVideo/CinemaSins Jeremy]]:''' Well, what other reaction would you have expected?
** With the faster cuts, the EnforcedMethodActing screaming from ''Film/TheWickerMan2006'', Tamara's gored hands and the various clips of Rachel and Critic getting beaten, the ''Film/GhostDad''-starting opening theme can get this reaction.
* NeverLiveItDown:
** He only really did "shouting and shooting in front of a camera" for the first couple of years, toning it down for the last couple of prime seasons, and even less after the first season of reboot, but he'll always be associated with "violent yelling" comedy no matter what else he does. This has been addressed in-universe, with Critic scared and insecure that the only reason why anyone watches is because he can swear a lot, and considering himself a bad shouty critic is one of the reasons why he's suicidal in WebVideo/ToBoldlyFlee.
** The "Bat Credit Card" freakout, which everybody treats as the quintessential Critic freakout moment and constantly brings up to Doug. Doug has admitted to regretting this because having to do the joke constantly does a number on his voice and he felt he could have done better with the episode. But unfortunately it'll be a cold day in hell before Critic/BCC stop getting associated with each other.
%% ** "Why Is Loki So Hot". Even Rob brought it up in ''WesternAnimation/{{The Lorax|2012}}'' behind the scenes footage as one of Doug's mean-spirited jabs at fangirls.
** Critic hitting Evilina in ''Film/TheCatInTheHat.'' It was played as a joke, Evilina had hit ''him'' first, and Evilina's face fell completely flat after he told her to stop crying, yet even entries on Website/ThisVeryWiki used it to paint Critic as a horrible child abuser.[[note]]This was at least acknowledged in ''Film/AliceInWonderland2010'', where he does the same to Malice and she threatens to stab him.[[/note]]
** His creepy SlutShaming of fourteen year old girls in the ''Anime/SailorMoon'' review. While it was played as concern that they wore such skimpy outfits, it got him a lot of backlash from ''Sailor Moon'' fans. Even though later reviews would feature less slut-shaming and address women's issues, and he even had Heather properly review ''Sailor Moon'' in his ''Toonami'' review, some fans still perceive him as a misogynist.
* NoSuchThingAsBadPublicity:
** ''Anime/SailorMoon'' was hated so much that it got [[http://henshinjustice.com/2013/08/07/nostalgia-critic-takes-a-stab-at-sailor-moon/ two]] [[http://shojopower.com/blame-it-on-the-sluts-nostalgia-critics-review-of-sailor-moon/ articles]] detailing the UnfortunateImplications, but it hit a million views pretty fast. Doug also bragged that he's met the ''Sailor Moon'' cast and they noticed him trashing it so he's happy.
** In "Real Thoughts on Bridge to Terabithia", Doug smugly tells everyone who didn't want him to do it that “it's about to hit a million views so nyah” ([[https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=846024212130708&id=127127037353766 and when it did was overjoyed at people being as sick as he was]]), and “little girls dying equal good comedy”. And later on he giggles about the “incredibly mean-spirited” title card and how it's one of the nastiest things he's ever done.
** Also pointed out his change in attitude [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLOA0WNJdGU succinctly]] in this interview.
--->'''Doug''': That [not doing Matilda] was in early days when backlash meant I wouldn't do something, nowadays if there's any backlash it means I will do it.
** In a Momocon interview, he mentions ''Film/ManOfSteel'' review getting people angry, and thus it's the one of the most viewed videos.
** In the "Soos and the Real Girl" vlog, Rob mentions the ''Anime/SailorMoon'' backlash and wonders if there's anyone Doug hasn't pissed off. Doug just laughs that the only reason people watch him now is to get angry.
** Bragged about in "Real Thoughts on Nostalgia Critic Reviews: The Matrix", as Doug says he reviewed a movie that a lot of people liked because it gets good hits, and Rob tells every negative comment that you gave them a view so they don't care what you're saying.
** In the "real thoughts" review on ''Film/{{Signs}}'' he calls this his favorite thing, where people don't want him to bash something because it meant a lot to them but it still got a ton of views.
** In the "real thoughts of ''Film/AliceInWonderland2010''", they talk about that review and ''Film/JurassicWorld'' getting all their hits from angry people who like the films, and specifically says for the latter that he's not going to apologize for it because it got him views.
** There's also a Huffington Post [[http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/mat-greenfield/nostalgia-critic_b_5691825.html interview]] where he said "I find usually the videos that get the most views are the ones that have the most complaining in the comments."
** In the Channel Awesome Midwest Media Expo panel, just moments after he was talking about nice fans saying he helped with depression, he said one of the best fans to have were the “I don't like what you're doing but I can't leave” kind.
** In the ''WesternAnimation/StevenUniverse'' vlog ''Space Race'', he says that his job is “offending people, no regrets”.
** In “Real Thoughts On Film/JurassicPark”, Doug complains about people liking the ''Lost World'' sequel because he doesn't get it, and thinks that those people are the ones making the JP reviews popular.
** Brought up in ''WesternAnimation/QuestForCamelot'' as Doug talks about the backlash the ''It'' review got but it's also one of the highest viewed, and they mention “more complaints, more hits” again.
** In ''Rising Tides Crashing Skies'', while they hate Ronaldo, they respect the show for deciding to piss the fanbase off by doing episodes around him, because they've done videos that just exist to troll people too. Rob also talks about not minding hater comments because “aw, we gave you a reason to exist”.
** A little more even handed in this [[https://video.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t42.1790-2/13437920_1735086386730073_1215012200_n.mp4?efg=eyJ2ZW5jb2RlX3RhZyI6InN2ZV9zZCJ9&oh=b12908a08b9ccc2e40655d7ce02b7ae5&oe=575CB427 Barnes and Noble]] clip, as he likes people getting mad because passion, but he also says you have to know what you're talking about and can't be a shock jock.
** In the real thoughts on ''Anime/PokemonTheFirstMovie'', he says he genuinely doesn't care about the franchise, but tells the threatening HePannedItNowHeSucks fans to please never stop.
** To a lesser extent, Tamara used this belief to promote Hyper Fangirl's CharacterBlog, as she said that even if you hate the character you should follow her anyway. It worked, considering Hyper has more Facebook followers than Tamara's page.
* NoYay: Critic goes between hitting on ''WebVideo/ThatSciFiGuy'' (wanting to see him naked in ''Film/TotalRecall1990'', invading his personal space in ''Franchise/StarTrek'' month) and treating him like a son who's unable to respect a parent's authority. It could just be to mess him around, but it's a pattern that doesn't happen with anyone else.
** Of all the people fangirls wanted to use Critic's tie as a leash and get in close, Santa Christ had to be pretty bottom of the list.
** There are a couple of people who missed the point and made cutesy art of it, but Critic/Rachel in ''Film/TheShining'' slip way too easily into abusive husband/abused wife roles. And aside from the people in MisaimedFandom, most really don't want Critic/Hyper Fangirl to ever be a possibility. Thankfully for the latter, Hyper/Devil Boner very quickly became the OneTruePairing, with both the actors and the fandom.
** Shipping of Devil Boner and Lady Love Embrace popped up on Tumblr pretty quickly, which is a little disturbing as he blew her up after five seconds of meeting her.
** In ''Cats And Dogs'', Aunt Despair's using Critic as clickbait basically involves pet-play when she's making him get a ball and bring it over with his mouth. He lampshades it by being disturbed with how much he apparently needs attention.
* OffendingTheCreatorsOwn:
** On Facebook, he got complained about for a pretty transphobic joke about Orlando Bloom and Justin Bieber being women {{catfight}}ing. His [[https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=723145877751876&id=127127037353766 response]] was to mostly excuse it with he's really feminine as well, calling himself "Queen Doug".
** Some (mostly Christian Americans) get venomously offended about the 'blasphemy' of Santa Christ, maybe forgetting that both Doug and Rob were raised Catholic but are now agnostic.
** In their co-vlog "Unlimited Beers", Rachel and Tamara talk about Doug being more nervous about potential sexist lines than they are, always asking if the script is okay for them and them going "yes Doug it's comedy".
* OlderThanTheyThink: Because ''Scooby Doo'' came out a few days after the ''Ultima'' finale and both dealt with some pretty intense issues of self-esteem, some overzealous fans accused Doug of ripping off Spoony. They missed out on the fact that Critic breaking down completely over how bad his life was had been set up since at least ''My Pet Monster''.
** What he said in the ''Theatre/RomeoAndJuliet'' editorial. While there are plenty of essays on the subject, soon after the video came out, [[WebVideo/BrowsHeldHigh Kyle]] tweet-recommended Creator/JohnGreen's [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4kz-C7GryY much]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9J4hoAatGRQ more detailed deconstruction]].
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VViTfSmpYtI Burton Land]] is not a new concept.
** Even he said in “Top 11 Things You Never Noticed About Ghostbusters” that this was in no way a new idea, or that most wouldn't already know the things he was pointing out.
** WebVideo/MikeJ did [[http://blip.tv/mikejtv/shameful-sequels-in-defense-of-episode-1-6566971 three]] [[http://blip.tv/mikejtv/shameful-sequels-in-defense-of-episode-2-6580607 whole]] [[http://blip.tv/mikejtv/shameful-sequels-in-defense-of-episode-3-6586282 videos]] in defense of the ''Franchise/StarWars'' prequels, and they got very little attention in comparison to Critic's “Top 11 GOOD Things from the Star Wars Prequels”. Mike himself pointed it out on Twitter. Even in 2016 Doug thought he was the only reviewer to ever talk about the "few" good things of the prequels.
** In “Is Sleepy Hollow Brilliant”, he explains how the movie is a tribute to Film/HammerHorror films like it might not be intentional and this is his own theory, but Burton had confirmed all this in his commentary.
** While the reboot sketches have plenty of issues and are a lot shinier in production values, people act like sketches at all is new to Critic. To give a big example that isn't just him being a character who was developing first and foremost (see Doug's big speech in ''WebVideo/ToBoldlyFlee''), the end of the Garbage Pail Kids movie had him travel in time, meet his older selves, become a TalkingPoo and show off a ridiculously cool singing voice. Critic tried to point this out himself in ''Christmas With The Kranks'', mentioning the Nerd rivalry, the crossovers and how the anniversary movies tied in with the show specifically. Plus 2008's Halloween special was an entire skit dedicated to him being tormented by Teddy Ruxpin, with maybe five seconds of review.
** To everyone amazed at how ''Film/ThePurge'' review got Rob Paulsen (and Maurice [=LaMarche=]) to do a skit for Doug, they'd already been introduced [[http://blip.tv/nostalgiacritic/demo-reel-annoys-rob-paulsen-6426918 because]] of WebVideo/DemoReel. Doug explains this himself in the commentary.
** [[Series/BillNyeTheScienceGuy Bill Nye]] did a Top 11 countdown (of his own music videos) over 20 years before Critic began going "one step beyond."
** In the ''Pixels'' commentary, while complaining how oblivious people are to the fact that clipless reviews of rebooted properties are still talking about nostalgia, Doug points out that they tell him to go back to the [[NostalgiaFilter old days]]... when he talked about ''Franchise/{{Transformers}}'', ''Literature/HarryPotter'' and ''Film/{{Cloverfield}}''.
** While not even disparaging ''Pokémon'', Ash vs Ash in "Freddy vs Jason'' got the usual fans accusing him of being unfair, but it's a battle (and outcome) that's been done plenty of times before.
* OneSceneWonder:
** The cameo from [[spoiler:Creator/RobPaulsen and Creator/MauriceLaMarche]] at the end of the ''Purge'' review. They even [[spoiler: reprise their roles as WesternAnimation/PinkyAndTheBrain.]]
** While the review of ''Music/TheWall'' as a whole was almost universally excoriated by the internet as a whole, it's generally agreed, even (or especially) by people who hated the rest that Sam Fennah's segment for "The Trial" (featuring the cast of ''WebVideo/SatelliteCity'') stole the show.
* OneTruePairing: At the end of ''Film/MadMaxFuryRoad'', [[PortmanteauCoupleName HyperBoner]] going off together got a really positive reception, given that unlike with Critic, she wasn't horrendously inappropriate to him and he actually likes her back. [[http://archiveofourown.org/works/5497085 There's also fanfic]].\
Even Doug loves them [[note]]which makes sense considering RealitySubtext and it's Hyper going off with someone else[[/note]] and says in the ''Phantom'' commentary that he'll be writing more of their relationship, much to Beth's (and fandom's) delight.
** Bay/Snyder at the end of ''Freddy vs Jason'' was met with wide approval.
** Nerd/Critic was the pairing to start the slash fandom, and after a long while of teasing "Nerd on Critic Action", ''Film/TheSmurfs'' confirmed hate-sex.
* OpinionMyopia:
** His video on HypeBacklash is tinged with this, as he assumes everyone who had backlash against (mainly) ''WesternAnimation/Frozen2013'', ''Franchise/StarWars'' and ''Film/AChristmasStory'' liked them to begin with and just got tired of the media pushes rather than how the trope usually goes with people believing the hype and being let down by the movies themselves. This is more in-line with ItsPopularNowItSucks anyways, but similar sentiments are expressed for a second in a later Vlog on one of the shows he does those for.
*** It's also ironic, since Doug himself, and the Critic, as well as Rob have reviewed films as the Critic that had ''massive'' hype around them, due to either high audience scores suggesting more people like them or had high critical ratings. The review of the Disney film adaptation of ''Literature/BridgeToTerabithia'' was even partially fueled by Doug and Rob hearing nothing but praise for the film, but couldn't see what others did in it. Seemingly, Doug's cherry picking which films don't deserve any backlash and which films ''do'' based on his opinions of them, when he shouldn't be surprised if anyone feels that way, considering some of the films he's reviewed.
** “The Dark Age Of Movies” is him complaining hard about the summer movies of 1996-2001 and ending it by saying “be grateful about most of the movies of today”. While he has a point, it's still somewhat hypocritical considering he was the one who made a big deal about wanting no cut-off date.
** In the video on whitewashing, the Critic references this happening with Hollywood films changing the races of some characters in them to white people and how this is more engrained than we think because trans people/dwarves/POC have almost never got roles they deserved in popular media.
** In the ''Film/AvengersAgeOfUltron'' Sibling Rivalry, they (especially [[https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=807242466013191&id=119355004801944 Rob]]) saw any complaint about the movie as FranchiseOriginalSin and critics “realizing” that they hyped up the first film too much so "have to correct themselves".
** In the vlogs/sibling rivalries, Rob has said he's the only one allowed to crap on Doug's different opinions. Like in ''Film/JurassicWorld'', he even did a [[https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=825775937493177&id=119355004801944 preview]] on Facebook of some of the insults he gave Doug for not liking the movie (and as shown in the video, Doug spent his time being loud on the film and barely mocked Rob for anything), and also tells him that he really is Douchey [=McNitpick=].
** In an example that is just general and not about movies, in the vlog ''On The Run'' Doug relates to Pearl in that he knows he's naïve and thinks people will automatically see things the way he does. Rob teases him and Doug sarcastically thanks him for being so kind and pointedly says "there are naïve things that you miss too".
** In the ''WesternAnimation/{{Moana}}'' review, Doug gently calls out all the emails that said the film was referencing his "sparkle sparkle sparkle" meme, saying it's super unlikely.
** In the review on the 2016 live action ''The Jungle Book'' remake, the Critic for some reason thinks that people who like the film like it for being more "adult" than the animated film rather than what the remake did well in its own right and regard the animated film as "for kids" and not worth taking seriously. Not only is this ''not'' a prevailing opinion of ''any'' of the Disney live action remakes of the 2010s and 2020s, but it comes off more as a weird stawman argument for Doug to use to rip on the remake than anything.
* OvershadowedByControversy:
** The ''Manga/SailorMoon'' review is remembered mostly from the backlash it received from fans of the series, for several jokes that were viewed as sexist, using the obsolete Optimum dub instead of the original Japanese version, and the fact that he focused on the ages of the characters, than for any of its actual merits. The controversy drove Creator/DougWalker to refrain from creating more anime-related reviews outside of crossovers.[[note]]When he did review ''Film/DragonBallEvolution'', he brought onboard anime fans Creator/LittleKuriboh and Creator/MasakoX as co-hosts to help explain the source material.[[/note]]
** His fourth commercial special is mainly remembered for the Canadian Rape [=PSA=] (he criticized it for being [[MoodWhiplash tone deaf]], but a lot of people mistook it as not liking the message) and the DoubleStandard sexual harassment RunningGag, in which he openly stated that men don't suffer from harassment because they can't tell who's interested in them or not.
** His review of ''Film/JurassicWorld'' is mainly remembered for the fact that it came out while the movie was still in theaters,[[note]]He bypassed a lack of footage from the film by having the cast reenact certain scenes.[[/note]] breaking the Critic's promise back in ''The Review Must Go On''. Critic mocked this in his TRMGO review, saying that he already broke a promise when he brought back the show.
** The LetsPlay of ''Bart's Nightmare'' is far more well-known for the backlash it received than for the video itself, to the point where the following review of ''Film/JamesAndTheGiantPeach'' had NC apologizing for it in character at the start; in a sketch where he got sent to prison for it, [[Film/TheGarbagePailKidsMovie placed next to the State Home for the Ugly, no less]].
** The Walkers themselves got caught up in controversy in late March 2018 when complaints of mistreatment by their upper management, up to and including allegedly turning a blind eye to sexual harassment committed by one of the site's producers, came to light. Doug has at least apologized for IgnoranceIsBliss and set breakdowns in vlogs and commentaries, but Rob/Michaud have said nothing (Doug's only comments during the actual scandal were [[https://www.salon.com/2018/04/22/the-triumph-and-tragedy-of-channel-awesome/#.Wtzn79jlyB4.twitter acknowledgements of the mistreatment claims in the past, but noting that he had not received complaints from the in-house crew in recent years.)]] The NC reviews released during the heat of this scandal got bombarded with dislikes and comments addressing the scandal more than the review, beginning around ''Woody Woodpecker'' and only calming down after ''The Emoji Movie'' review was released. The ''Jack and Jill'' review was delayed until Friday around 8PM EST due to it coming shortly after a very controversial statement on the issue, and Channel Awesome social media refrained from posting until around mid-May.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:P-S]]
* {{Padding}}: Doug's been known to occasionally make a few jokes about a movie, and then stretch them out a tad too far.
** The worst was him laughing with the outfit of one of the protagonists in his review of "Saved By The Bell", which kept going and going and going...
** The phone conversation between him and Adam Sandler in the ''WesternAnimation/EightCrazyNights'' episode goes on for over two and a half minutes. In the “real thoughts” review, Doug notes that he gets that people think it's an OverlyLongGag, but needed it as “catharsis”.
** In the ''Film/ThePurge'' commentary, Doug admits that the Pinky and the Brain sketch is a lot like the overly long skits they do on ''WesternAnimation/FamilyGuy'', and that he wrote the whole review around that joke.
** The 'Coen Brother's Garfield' and 'Character who looks NOTHING like its namesake' in the ''{{Film/Garfield}}'' review. ESPECIALLY the former, which not only bookends the review, but also goes on for 4 minutes at a time.
* ParanoiaFuel: [[https://twitter.com/michaelltd/status/726616015451222016 Hyper will never stop watching you]].
* PeripheryDemographic: Let's be honest, a fair amount of fangirls ([[EvenTheGuysWantHim and guys]]) just watch him 'cuz he's cute and suffers in an appealing way, not because they care about what he's reviewing. Lampshaded at the end of ''Film/TheWickerMan2006'' where he casually brings up that he always gets more views when he's suffering in a fetishy way.
* PopularWithFurries: Film/TheWall has plenty of comments saying Fennah’s creatures (who are aliens with furry bodies) awakened something in them (“scaroused” is a popular feeling). Helps that the female creatures move their HartmanHips and everyone shoves [[MemeticLoser Critic]] around.
* PortmanteauCoupleName: [=HyperBoner=] for Hyper Fangirl/Devil Boner. Helps that it's just a ''fun'' word to say. It's also made the official ship name by Doug in the ''Phantom'' commentary. Tamara has a folder entitled Hyper Boner, and the tech guy who fixed her computer congratulated her on her creative name for her saved porn. Hyper herself settles on it as their best possible ship name in her Q&A. The ''Chipwrecked'' review spends at least half of their wedding scenes making dirty puns about the ship name.
** "Cryper" is sometimes used as shorthand for Hyper Fangirl/Nostalgia Critic, usually by people who hate the ship (the joke being it makes people cry).
* TheProducerThinksOfEverything: The Nostalgia Critic was officially retired in the last part of ''WebVideo/ToBoldlyFlee''. For viewers who didn't or chose not to watch the anniversary special, the Scooby Doo review also serves as finale for the character.
* RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap: Analyst 1 and Analyst 2 were wispy {{straw character}}s in ''Film/TheCatInTheHat'' and ''WesternAnimation/{{The Lorax|2012}}'', but in ''Film/ThePhantomOfTheOpera2004'' and ''Jem'', they're still pathetic and chart-obsessed, but given more depth and are actual effective villains.
** Hyper became a lot less of a BaseBreakingCharacter from ''Film/MadMaxFuryRoad'' where she got over Critic (with relapsing, and he's allowed to still hate her), entered a really cute relationship with Devil Boner and people could enjoy her {{tragic villain}}y without having to worry about Critic being pressured into liking her.
* ReviewsAreTheGospel: Some of his fans believe that his word is law, [[PraisingShowsYouDontWatch praising]]/[[ComplainingAboutShowsYouDontWatch complaining]] about movies because he did likewise. Doug has said that his character [[AccentuateTheNegative Accentuates the Negative]], and even encourages people to watch the movies he riffs off -- but ironically, those law-taking people tend to ignore him on that one.
** In the video commentaries, Doug will often say that many of the movies reviewed aren't that bad or maybe even watchable and entertaining, it's just that as the Nostalgia Critic, there's little incentive to point out the strengths of the film. His criteria for choosing movies isn't so much based on the quality (or lack thereof), but on what he can target to make an entertaining review, which he outlines in a few videos including a Top 11 "movies he will never review."
** [[https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=10151357686407634&id=361014072633&stream_ref=10 Nella]] actually slammed the people who responded to her calling ''Film/OzTheGreatAndPowerful'' sexist with “but Doug liked it!”
** [[https://twitter.com/TheOmegaGeek/status/504614434904743937 Was also mocked by Omega]] (Diamanda's wife), who wonders if Doug knows that his fans use his opinions to try and bully other producers.
** It's not uncommon for ''Korra/Adventure Time'' trope entries to coincidentally appear on this site as there's a vlog where Doug expresses that opinion (like for Korra, WinBackTheCrowd got added as soon as he said he liked season three). Note that this is a guy who has been yelled at a lot by Rob or friends for hypocrisy and not remembering anything.
** Reprimanded by Critic himself in the ''Film/LesMiserables2012'' finale song, with “will you form your own conclusion, or give up and follow me?”
** At the end of Doug's ''Film/ItFollows'' review, he strongly asks the people who'll just agree blindly with him not to comment, as he wants to find out if he just didn't understand something obvious, because he knows he does that a lot and can't seem to help it.
** While there are quite a few movies Doug has reviewed that he really can't stand and he's glad that he got more people to hate them, for the most part he and Rob get really uncomfortable with people coming up to them and saying in a positive tone “I liked this movie before you reviewed it and now I hate it”.
** In a variation, he made a mistake in ''Film/ThePurge'', calling the polite leader “Henry” when that was the boyfriend's name and he even showed that clip. Cue fans deciding that the polite leader ''had'' to be called Henry to let the CRF off.]]
* RonTheDeathEater:
** The example of his care for children being turned into pedophilia is just one instance of people making him out to be far worse than he is.
** Despite Evilina not doing anything to Critic after he hit her except for crying, some adamantly say that she deserved it in advance.
* RootingForTheEmpire: For all the people irritated by how one-sided the ''Film/ManOfSteel'' review was, Zod was the best thing about it; making Critic scared, linking back to the WebVideo/ToBoldlyFlee and mocking his crappy speech. EvilIsCool helps too.
* SeasonalRot:
** A lot of people have this opinion after the series was uncancelled, due to more controversial statements, actions and criticisms people feel are hypocritical when old reviews are taken into consideration, an {{Anvilicious}} tone, sketches that go nowhere, an over-reliance on StrawCritic and the fact that his character arc's resolution was undone.
** Some of the people who liked the revived series began to quit it come mid-2014, where they felt that the Critic had become more mean-spirited, more hostile towards anyone or anything he doesn't like to the point of insulting people who disagree with him (some even feeling he's become a StrawCritic himself), had skits that overstay their welcome, and ridiculous amounts of BiasSteamroller.
** 2015 has been even worse. In addition to several of the above problems persisting, many have been turned off by several of the videos being little more than an AuthorTract rather than an actual review, spouting off viewpoints that are clearly supposed to be Walker's rather than the Critic's in-character, and the Critic now getting much worse when it comes to reviewing very recent material, including breaking his previous restriction and looking at ''Jurassic World'', ''Pixels'', and ''Star Wars: The Force Awakens'' while they were still in theaters, leaving the "Nostalgia" part as an ArtifactTitle.
* SelfFanservice:
** Appreciated in the ''Film/OsmosisJones'' behind the scenes when they look over bookmark fanart, and Tamara and Doug both like the artist made them thinner and with a better chest respectively.
** Played for laughs in one of the Geek Fight promos, as he praises the art for making him look strong and masculine.
** Doug really likes gender-swapped fanart of himself, and thinks he looks hotter like that.
* ShallowParody:
** ''Sharknado'' has a parody of ''Series/MythBusters'' where they act like Kari Bryon is just meant to be the hot chick who makes bad puns. She actually took out the engine block of the phonebook bulletproof van, cut a tree in half with a Gatling Gun, and certainly does more than the skit lets on.
** Doug's review of ''Film/TheWall'' film has been routinely criticized for this. Just one example involves him mocking "Goodbye Blue Sky" as an "[[AwardBaitSong Oscar bait song]]," despite it originally coming from the Music/PinkFloyd [[Music/TheWall album]].
* ShipsThatPassInTheNight:
** Malcolm's Devil/Ask That Guy. Reasoning being that Ask That Guy has canonically has had sex with the TGWTG version of the devil (who can change form).
** Hyper's been shipped with Aiyanna's portrayal of Harley Quinn for their [[MadLove similar]] [[AxCrazy traits]].
* SoBadItWasBetter: Rob in the ''Boss Mabel'' vlog accused fans of having this mindset, saying they'll put so much effort into an episode or a show, and fans will respond with they'd rather the half-assed crap in front of a wall. To add insult to injury, apparently when Doug does a simple breather episode, those get far less hits and far less positive comments.
* SpecialEffectFailure:
** While it can be argued this happens a lot with his low budget effects, a glaring example is in the ''Film/TheGarbagePailKidsMovie'' review towards the end. When the DVD is floating in the air, much of the DVD's edge has green screen residue on it. While unintentional, the commentary by Rob and Doug seems to indicate they thought the effect worked better that way considering how much they hate that movie in particular.
** This makes the ''Film/{{Devil}}'' review somewhat awkward, as it all takes place on a badly green-screened elevator and a lot of the times you're distracted by how fake it looks, not helped by Critic often sounding glitchy.
** At the end of ''Did Tom And Jerry Kill Themselves'', when Critic is on the train tracks with Tom, you can still see a bit of Jerry below Critic's arm.
** Most of ''Film/HocusPocus'' is good, but there's a noticeable rim around Doug's wig when he's in front of a green screen background.
** In his review of ''Film/ChristmasWithTheKranks'', the Critic gets locked in a closet and can't get out. [[https://youtu.be/y4ePe_Xh3n4?t=22m57s The latch is on his side of the door]] Then again, he could be just that stupid.
** The shots of the phones during "Texts" in ''Film/ThePhantomOfTheOpera2004'' are clearly photoshopped, as the screens aren't parallel to the shape of the phone.
** The shot of Creator/KathleenKennedy's door at the end of the ''WesternAnimation/BatmanVsTheTeenageMutantNinjaTurtles'' review doesn't put much effort into making the plaque of her name on the door look anything more like some text overlay on top of the door image.
* {{Squick}}:
** As hilarious as the "[=NeverEnding=] Story 3" meltdown was, we really didn't need that close-up of his spitting into the ripped-up DVD cover.
** Did Rob ''really'' have to do the Santa Christ voice for the first commercial pedophile call?
** Vomiting onscreen in ''Star Trek V''. To make matters worse, a bit of whatever liquid he used stays on his chin for the rest of the video.
** The beginning of ''Film/PearlHarbor'' has a porn scene where a submissive DumbBlonde actress rises up onscreen after a "pop" noise. That she's played by Doug's ex, who he's [[WebVideo/SuburbanKnights exploded]] and [[WebVideo/ToBoldlyFlee chained up]], doesn't help the exploitive feeling.
** During the ''Film/AIArtificialIntelligence'' review, the ''TMZ'' logo is shown over footage of [[VomitIndiscretionShot people vomiting]].
** Even the people all up for Doug's tendency to give crotch shots {{fanservice}} have bad memories of the talking dick scene in ''Anime/SailorMoon'' review.
** While the effect is clearly fake, if you don't like EyeScream then you're not going to like the end of his ''Film/MammaMia'' review.
** While thankfully clean, Critic sticking a diaper on his face in "Rise of the Commercials" is still pretty gross.
* StoicWoobie: Benny. He has elements of jerkass as he's an assassin who wanted Critic too, but he saves his wibbling for private time.
* StrawmanHasAPoint:
** The people complaining about the wall are roundly mocked in ''WesternAnimation/TheKingAndI'', but ones with genuine complaints manage to get in (like "didn't he say he wanted to do something new", or stuff that Doug outright admitted to doing later on; such as hiding behind the pretty production values, trying to cater to his 2008 audience, or that there's more insensitive jokes) and he says nothing about them.
** The "male academia" line in ''Film/Catwoman2004'' gets treated like some huge StrawFeminist moral of the movie that's worthy of Critic proudly calling himself a sexist, but really it's just one line that's a clumsy attempt at addressing the real issue of male-dominated fields ignoring the accomplishments of women.
** Analyst 1 in ''WesternAnimation/{{The Lorax|2012}}'' gets a few accurate digs in, like telling Critic he knows what it's like to pander to the base and dreading the inevitable speeches.
** The time travel FramingDevice for the ''Film/ChristmasWithTheKranks'' review is supposed to convey how much the show has improved since its early days, and tries to paint anyone who prefers the classic style as simply being afraid of change by having [[IHatePastMe the Critic's past self]] make easily-refuted complaints about the modern episodes. However, as WebVideo/LadyEmily explained in her video on modern NC, the attempts to show how much better the new format is only highlight why it doesn't work. For instance, when the modern Critic attempts a classic-style review, he's surprised that his short quips no longer segue into lengthy skits that are only tangentially related to the review and add nothing to the initial joke -- and this is treated as a ''bad'' thing.
** Corey Taylor in the ''The Wall'' review gets portrayed as whiny and a punchline for saying "it's a review!" at the tail end of the video, even though the entire video isn't a review, so much as a long music video for poor parodies of Pink Floyd's songs from the album and movie. More people have ended up agreeing with him than not.
* StuckInTheirShadow: Beth for ''Film/ThePhantomOfTheOpera2004'' wrote most of the songs (all but "Texts” and “Point Of Epic Burns") and had worked on the episode with Doug for over five months. She also made both these things very clear. But when she's not being blamed "for making him do it", she's getting ignored.
* SurprisinglyImprovedSequel:
** If one considers ''WebVideo/TheUncannyValley'' review a sequel to the "Critic Reloaded" reviews (which would make sense as they're both Doug reviewing his own work), then it has got this reaction, having far more character moments (including ''two'' hope spots where he tries to fix himself but can't) and better criticisms than having gimmicky amnesia and relying on insulting the FemaleGaze of ''WebVideo/SuburbanKnights'' and ''WebVideo/ToBoldlyFlee'' instead of any plot issues they had.
** Regarding clipless reviews, ''Film/JurassicWorld'' had a lot of work put into it, but was very BetterByADifferentName (as Doug had only just done a Sibling Rivalry on it, albeit with Rob mocking him the whole way through), DontShootTheMessage and was kinda all over the place. ''Film/{{Pixels}}'' and especially ''Film/MadMaxFuryRoad'' had a lot more creativity, interaction and both those things helped the videos be more like fun video essays and not just a vent by Doug and Rob. ''Pixels'' is also seen as far nicer than ''WesternAnimation/EightCrazyNights'', as the latter was criticized by a lot of people for being really mean-spirited to Sandler and his fans, and the former just wants Sandler to give a shit like he used to.
** ''Film/BatmanVSupermanDawnOfJustice'' to ''Film/ManOfSteel''. It helps that Joe and Critic are essentially on the same side, so Joe doesn't get turned into a StrawCharacter like Doug acknowledged last time.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:T-Y]]
* TakeThatScrappy: Doug has gone as far as to [[https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=10152187063309508&id=127127037353766&stream_ref=10 recommend]] torture scenes stretched out even longer for anyone who can't stand Critic in the reboot.
** In Maven's “Monster Mash”, he's cast as the zombie that nobody can stand, he's late because he killed a little girl, Maven calls him a “reanimated dead guy” and he leaves sad and defensive.
** At the end of ''The Uncanny Valley'', while Diamanda also blows up Nash and Rob, Critic (he wasn't in the scene, ''just so happened'' to be behind the camera) is the only one she wants to see burn in hell for a while before she reverses time.
** The ending of ''WesternAnimation/{{Foodfight}}'' cuts off one of his patented self-righteous speeches to tell him that he wasted his time being OnlyInItForTheMoney (something that he's been openly admitting since ''Anime/SailorMoon'') because people are fickle enough to be bored already, and ''that's'' what breaks him enough to have a Selina-style meltdown, not the movie itself like everyone first thought.
** In the BadFuture montage of Last Angry Geek's ''Future's End'' episode, he's the only one to get really punished, having all his craved-for power taken away from him and crying as he kneels down to give Snob a blowjob.
** In the ''Christmas Story II'' review, Critic reminds Hyper of everything gross she's done to him, asks her why the hell would she thinks her actions would win him over, and goes on a rant about how much he hates her. Stalking victims who hate her too were relieved.
* TestosteroneBrigade: Since the {{gaze}} changed from Prime!Critic's and WebVideo/DemoReel's [[FemaleGaze female]] to [[MaleGaze male]], if comment sections were any indication, some guys just watched to make creepy come-ons at Rachel and hope her last name was prophetic. Now that Rachel has left, the brigade moved onto Tamara. Gross comments and complaining about "armpit cleavage" in the latter's review of ''Film/JurassicPark'' forced her to make a tweet about having to [[https://twitter.com/TamaraLChambers/status/754899826236588032 wear a sleeve t-shirt]].
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: Among the many legit criticisms of the show since its return, there's also the rather baffling ranting and raving over the different wall behind the Critic. This eventually even got written into the show as Doug was simply bemused at why so many people had an issue with a completely irrelevant bit of set dressing, though he also said in an interview that people complaining about the wall thing was actually more reassuring than the aforementioned valid criticisms.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter:
** Brentalfloss in the Les Misérables review. He's undeniably hilarious, but he gets very little screen time, and he doesn't even get to show off his impressive singing due to forcing his voice to resemble Creator/RussellCrowe's.
** A lot of people thought that [[spoiler: Greg Sestero]] in ''Dawn of the Commercials'' was wasted as just being a punchline to a sexual harassment joke that got a ton of backlash.
** Not that there weren't interesting or good things (the meta section especially) about the plot in “Top 11 Best Avatar Episodes”, but according to Doug, there were a few complaints from people who wanted more discussion from Dante about the show he was on than just fighting for most of the episode. He complains about this while somehow comparing himself to Batman.
-->'''Doug:''' When you get Superman and Batman together, you don't want to see them discuss what it's like to be a superhero. You want to see them fight.
** The witch in "Dawn of the Commercials" and the Happy Madison audience in the WesternAnimation/EightCrazyNights review could have become reoccuring characters, but they were only used in those reviews, and since Rachel left the Nostalgia Critic and the Happy Madison audience were killed off in the Eight Crazy Nights review, it’s unlikely that those characters will ever appear again.
** Malice in ''Film/AliceInWonderland2010'' was CuteAndPsycho, had WhatBeautifulEyes, held a knife up to Critic whenever he annoyed her, called him out on his insanity and was with him in the studio at the end, but never appeared again. She comes back for a quick cameo in "Freddy vs Jason" (in a Dorothy vs Alice imagining), to the happiness of a lot of people. She did come back for a major role in ''Film/AliceThroughTheLookingGlass,'' though that review was topped off with a GainaxEnding and she hasn't been seen since (unlike her companion Carrotjuice who returned for ''Film/{{Hop}}'').
** Getting WebVideo/JonTron in the intro for 2014's Nostalgia-Ween to say just one line. Despite using the intro for every video that month. It could have been a CouchGag where Jon saids something different each time but nope, Jon just attacks Critic every week for reviewing ''WesternAnimation/{{Foodfight}}''. No mention was made of the fact Jon had also reviewed ''Film/TheLostWorld'' either.
** Tamara's Cruella De Ville [[https://instagram.com/p/3jVW4dPMkr/?taken-by=thetamaracamera looked]] and [[https://vine.co/v/eM5brqzTe1a sounded]] far too perfect just to have a five second cameo in the Film/JupiterAscending review.
** Sadness in the ''WesternAnimation/InsideOut'' parody parts of the ''Film/OsmosisJones'' review. Critic's version of sad really ''should'' be able to say more related to him than two comments about people who complain about the wall and ''Film/JupiterAscending'' fans.
** People like them, but the Aw Girls are intentionally wasted, as Critic calls them "underrused cameos" in the Alvin sequel.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot:
** The Critic Reloaded reviews of the anniversaries. Instead of being cruel because of amnesia, how cool would it have been - with all his CharacterDevelopment amassed - for him to react to realizing Chick was trying to kill him in ''WebVideo/{{Kickassia}}'' when he trusted her so much, or to express guilt over how badly he treated Film Brain?
** There were a couple of nods, but "Why Is Loki So Hot" could have been a lot more fun if it went full meta ([[http://aunt-zelda.livejournal.com/325175.html#cutid1 as both Doug and Hiddleston are attractive and charming]], and both Critic and Loki get fangirls as well as ICanChangeMyBeloved fangirls) instead of making HaveIMentionedIAmHeterosexualToday jokes and insulting women for their tastes. He made up for it quickly and efficiently in “When Did Marvel Villains Get Good” though, celebrating Loki, relating to him and encouraging the fangirls to keep their love going.
** The ''Anime/SailorMoon'' review was also considered a missed opportunity, as ''Sailor Moon'' has many occasions that the Critic could've used for comedy, and yet he never bothered, and also decided to forgo research, despite help from Lewis.
** ''Film/GhostRider2007'' features the devil and his child prominently, along with plenty of deals, but maybe because Rachel is gone and Evilina can't appear, neither Malcolm's devil or Critic's contract with him even get a mention.
** Snob going crazy in ''Bloodrayne'' was well-acted by Brad and interesting, but just kind of ends in the middle of the episode with no resolution other than him wanting to know why nobody is paying attention.
** In terms of jokes, [[https://channelawesomeconfessionsblog.tumblr.com/post/93407728828/a-missed-opportunity this confession]] gives a good reason why it should have been ''Pinky'' ranting at Brain at the end of ''Film/ThePurge''.
** The review of the Garfield movie was 23 minutes long, with 5 of them devoted to a Coen/Cohen sketch. Yet Garfield is as much a nostalgic item as Scooby-Doo or Dr. Seuss are. A great review could have been made, talking again about how nostalgia gets betrayed by terrible film adaptations, and expanding on this and making sketches based around this. Instead we get a very long skit rising solely from their knee-jerk reaction to finding out how Bill Murry misread the name of the director as his decision for accepting the role.
** One could prefer [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BWz8p8_YJ4 the trailer]] for ''Film/TheForceAwakens'' rather than the actual review, the former coming off like the ''Fury Road'' episode and the latter having Snob and Critic sitting down and talking over re-enacted clips.
** Lampshaded in ''Film/AlvinAndTheChipmunks'' where they're all let down that Critic has to do it on his own with no comedic debate or other identities. Though they make up for it with a song number at the end.
** The intro to Nostalgiaween 2014 features [[WebVideo/JonTron Jon Jafari]] breaking into the Critic's house to kill him [[DisproportionateRetribution for reviewing]] ''{{WesternAnimation/Foodfight}}''... and it stays Jon for the rest of the month. Many have noted the wasted opportunity of having the intro rotating through other online personalities in place of Mr. Jafari.
** In the ''Batman Vs Superman'' review, they threw away the perfect chance to bring back Rob Scallon, who not only played Supes in the Man Of Steel review opening sketch, but is Tamara's real life boyfriend.
** Some fans thought the Hyper Boner wedding should have either been its own video or at least more present throughout the review, not just relegated to a few minutes bookending the ''Chipwrecked'' review, especially with all the hype it and the cameos got the week before. What we do see of it did generally please the fanbase, however.
** Many people felt that the 10th year anniversary episode felt just like a regular NC episode without much hurrah and that this episode should've taken the opportunity to review the 2007 ''Transformers'' movie which would've tied in perfectly with the very first NC episode ever done.
* ToughActToFollow:
** While ''Theatre/LesMiserables'' got comments like "best episode of the reboot", it was never going to top ''Film/MoulinRouge'' with all of that review's character-driven songs.
** People tend to like his review of ''Film/HowTheGrinchStoleChristmas'' more than ''Film/TheCatInTheHat'' or ''WesternAnimation/{{The Lorax|2012}}'' for a few reasons, like how it was more focused on Critic almost learning a lesson than treating Seuss as a SacredCow, it didn't hate people who enjoyed the movies, [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking and the rhyming gimmick was cute]].
** While it wasn't trying to be anything but a BreatherEpisode, ''Scooby-Doo 2'' was filled up with mostly idiocy played for laughs, while ''Scooby-Doo'' was a character-driven ContinuityPorn SeriesFauxnale that a ton of people cried over and related to.
** Some people were disappointed with the tenth year anniversary episode turning out to be a meh animated film rather than the big clipless EnsembleCast episode of ''Film/WonderWoman2017''. Lampshaded when Malcolm and Tamara play video games throughout because they need a rest after that review.
** On the subject of clipless reviews, many people tend to like his review of ''Film/MadMaxFuryRoad'' more than the other ones, like ''Film/HocusPocus'' and '''especially''' ''Film/TheWall''. The reasons are because it puts Critic in the middle of the movie's action, has amazing special effects and had a good excuse for being a clipless review, as ''Fury Road'' was still new at the time.
* TransAudienceInterpretation: The bit in the ''Nickcoms'' review where Critic mentions he was RaisedAsTheOppositeGender is interpreted by the LGBTFanbase as Critic being UsefulNotes/{{transgender}} (or at least transmasculine and nonbinary). The episodes where he is very protective of his masculinity gain extra meaning under this interpretation.
* UnintentionalPeriodPiece: In the review of “Doug’s 1st Movie”, The Critic complains that building robots isn’t a normal thing high schoolers do. Cut to the present, and its learning how to build and program robots is now quite common to learn in high school.
* UnintentionallySympathetic: The TMZ crew in ''A.I.'' review. They're so straw, Critic is being a hypocrite because even Doug noted in-commentary that he does the same thing now, their "crimes" are so embarrassingly done (like male crossdressing being seen as worse than racism), plus the whole reason they exist is down to immature RealitySubtext [[note]]Like the real TMZ or not, it's fairly reasonable for them to ask the [=YouTube=] video of "The Top 11 South Park Episodes" to be reuploaded without the screaming rant at their fans[[/note]], that you just end up feeling embarrassed for them in the end.
* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic:
** [[invoked]] Hyper in ''Christmas Story II'' pulls a load of {{wounded gazelle gambit}}s (as proved in the accompanying vlog, and Doug in the Midwest Media Expo panel seems to think he pulled the [[UnintentionallySympathetic opposite trope]]) like grabbing Chester's coat so she can look pathetic, mournfully waving at Critic and then looking angry when he rejects her, proves she doesn't know him and doesn't leave him alone like he's asked repeatedly, but the plinky music, PuppyDogEyes and her getting what she wants in the end all suggest you're meant to be on her side.
** The Critic himself comes off much less sympathetically as he's likely intended to in many of the post-revival episodes. Even in the above-mentioned ''Christmas Story II'', him ranting at Hyper about how much he hates her would be warranted in most instances, but for him to do it during the Christmas season, meant to be a time for love and peace and togetherness as he himself ranted about in just the previous year's ''The Christmas Tree'' review, and when Hyper actually had far less malicious intentions behind her harassment of him than before, can make him seem mean-spirited, cruel and hypocritical to even people who are against Hyper and her actions towards him.
* TheUntwist: It was obvious that Critic wasn't dead in ''Film/GhostDad'', because if he had been he would have been immediately getting tortured in hell for the deal he made in ''Film/TheCatInTheHat''. Might also count as RewatchBonus because you're expected to remember that plot point and be glad at the end that Doug's actually remembering it too.
* ValuesDissonance:
** Being a more secular country than America, UK viewers are often confused by the lampshading that the Santa Christ concept is apparently offensive blasphemy when they see it as a harmless joke.
** Another UK based one: in his review of ''Film/{{Garfield}}'' the critic gets upset and offended that John would put Garfield outside. The phenomenon of cats being strictly house pets is much less common in the UK (thanks to no declawing and lack of animals dangerous to cats) where it's often seen as cruel ''not'' to let your cat go outside regularly.
* VanillaProtagonist: Now that his [[WebVideo/ToBoldlyFlee character arc is done]], some might say Critic is the least interesting thing about the revival. Lampshaded in ''WesternAnimation/TheKingAndI'', he finds out people are more interested in complaining about his wall than listening to what he has to say, and used to his advantage in the ''Film/LesMiserables2012'' musical; after the disastrous ''Anime/SailorMoon'' and the divisive reputation of Nu!Critic in general, Critic (while still technically the main character) takes a backseat to all the other producers and is only in the spotlight when he starts the crowd songs, so becomes easier to take as a result. Also lampshaded gleefully in ''Film/TheMonsterSquad'', as when Critic says he's the WhiteMaleLead so only he can do the review, Malcolm counters that the other character-tokens are far more interesting. Critic doesn't exactly disagree.
* SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome:
** Jim Jarosz made all the sets and models of the ''Film/MadMaxFuryRoad'' review himself, including Tamara's Furiosa arm, and the three weeks the crew took to work on it really shows.
** In ''Film/ThePhantomOfTheOpera2004'' commentary, while he wishes he could have asked Michaud for another week so there could be even more visual tricks with the episode, Doug calls "Point Of Epic Burns'' his favorite green-screen effect because it really looks like there's two of him.
** The 2016 ''WesternAnimation/GravityFalls'' opening, with beautiful SceneryPorn time lapse shots of Chicago and seamless editing on a low budget.
** The GrandFinale to the Christmas intros had corny but much better effects than the reviewed "Rapsittie Street Kids", with a spaceship and a Christmas demon.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KANQoNDdDKM The trailer]] for his review of ''Film/TheWall'' with the assistance of [[WebVideo/SatelliteCity Sam Fennah]], even the thumbnail looks beautifully NightmareFuel-ish. And the review itself is full of SurrealHorror and SceneryPorn.
* VocalMinority:
** Most people who find him attractive wouldn't dream of A) hurting him B) being a creeper C) insulting his wife. Trouble is, a few would do all those things and they're the loudest. Sort of thankfully, according to Doug, his wife has no problem snarking about his con creepers or looking after him, and Doug always reassures that when he talks about gross people or fangirls who go way too far, he knows majority aren't like that and you're allowed to do dark fic/art about Critic and others.
** Following the reboot of the show, there's a BrokenBase between those that prefer the skit-based reviews with a larger supporting cast and those that want the original style of the Critic just yelling at the camera. Doug has said in commentaries that while he occasionally does the latter to appease such fans, it's the skit-based reviews that get more hits.
** Noted by Doug in the season 1 ''Daredevil'' finale vlog, talking about ''WesternAnimation/StevenUniverse'' vlogs, as he wonders if there's actually a large audience who'll watch them or if it was a loud minority. Then both him and Rob say to get more people watching so they'll go through the episodes faster.
** In "Too Short to Ride", when Doug talks about how great ''VideoGame/PokemonGo'' is, Rob jokes that they brought the internet outside, but apologizes, saying the bad shit is probably only a minority.
* {{Wangst}}: Played for laughs when he gets news that a friend of a very distant relative has just died.
-->'''Critic''': [crying] Feel bad for me!
** His complaining and tears in ''Film/SonOfTheMask'' got less sympathy and more people asking why he came back from the PlotHole when he was happier there.
** Critic's depressed complaining in ''Film/BloodRayne'' about the tradition he's forced to do (have Linkara and Spoony review an Uwe Boll movie with him) is treated as such, with Tamara/Malcolm being tired of it and Linkara/Spoony forcing him to slapstick with a pie in the face. It doesn't help that YouKeepUsingThatWord is in play. It'd be better if he was just depressed about PanderingToTheBase, as “I did an Uwe Boll movie with Linkara and Spoony once and have to do it again” does not a tradition make.
** Hyper Fangirl started off like this, acting like a friendzoned EmoTeen drenched in self-pity because Critic didn't want to fuck her, but as soon as the voices told her to stalk him harder, she became a deluded StepfordSmiler who took Critic's death threats as him showing his love, making her far creepier and trainwreck-like.
* WhatDoYouMeanItsNotDidactic: In the ''Sailor Moon'' review, the Critic goes on a tangent discussing the transformation sequences, interpreting it as something squicky due to its "fanservice", and going into detail about Japanese laws and value differences. This comes out of nowhere and feels he was just reading too far into it. Add the fact the intended demographic of the show (like the young female demographic) didn't take much notice, and the fact he himself admitted they didn't even look 14 (and even including her in a earlier list of hot anime girls) and it becomes even more confusing.
* WhatDoYouMeanItsNotForKids: He himself is apparently an example of this, much to Doug's distress, as in the ''Fight Fighters'' vlog he says he's met a couple of ten year olds at cons and tells them he really wishes they wouldn't watch him. Critic references it in-universe at the beginning of “Why Lie About Santa”, where saying that makes a ton of children cry and he gets upset because they shouldn't be watching him.
** At a Fan World panel talking about it:
-->'''Kid!Doug''': I watch all your stuff!
-->'''Doug''': Please don't!
** He still takes pictures with kids cosplaying as him and puts on them on Facebook, however.
* TheWoobie:
%% ** Dark Rob.
%% ** Ma-Ti and Dr. Smith, although Ma-Ti's woobie-ness got played out far more in a certain [[WebVideo/SuburbanKnights special]].
** Rachel's characters. They're usually either there to be sexualized, slapped around and made to cry, or both. Plus in ''Film/TheShining'' review, she admits in commentary that Doug really did scare her.
** Malcolm (the character, not the actor) is pretty WeakWilled, cowardly and happy for extreme payback, but Critic abuses him horribly for no reason a lot of the time, and he's particularly shaken after bearing the brunt of it in ''Disney Afternoon''. He was also kidnapped by Critic to be his friend/lackey [[note]]''Film/TheSmurfs'' review[[/note]], and Critic installed a chip in his head so that he'd explode if he ever tried to leave Chicago [[note]]''Film/SpeedRacer'' alternate scenes[[/note]].
** Bum Jr[[note]]Tamara's little girl character with the big bow in her hair[[/note]]. She's practically a chew toy for Aunt Despair and Uncle Lies to traumatize. When she's a little bratty in ''Labyrinth'', she gets punished with horrifying 80's movies and ends up rocking in the corner. She later gets left out to freeze in "Rise of the Commercials" and is the constant victim of emotional abuse and eventual abandonment in the ''Balto'' review. She does at least get a happy ending, being HappilyAdopted by Chester and Doe, but her original family still treats her terribly and [[{{Gaslighting}} denies abandoning her.]]
** Cliff is more of a JerkassWoobie, but Melody[[note]]Tamara's little girl character in the backwards baseball cap, only named in the ''Hulk'' review[[/note]] is desperately trying to be the sensible one of the family while trying to stave off a breakdown, and she gets forced to watch animals being hurt, gets further tortured by Critic [[DisproportionateRetribution for writing a bad script]] in the ''Monkeybone'' review, and vents about her DaddyIssues and grows into a sad and damaged adult with her brother according to the ''Hulk'' review.
