* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: All of the game's dance battles, but ''A Filthy Finale'' is generally agreed to be the best of the bunch.
* CultClassic: Like its source material, it has a solid fanbase who enjoy its atmosphere and mechanics, even if it overall doesn't measure up to the original.
* {{Fanon}}: Many feel that the game makes far more sense if you assume it takes place in continuity with ''Franchise/KingdomHearts'' rather than the actual movie.
* FriendlyFandoms:
** As such, since it's pretty much a ''Kingdom Hearts'' game set entirely in ''The Nightmare Before Christmas'', many fans of that series regard the game with fondness. Some even want the game to be [[RecursiveAdaptation adapted]] into a future installment of ''Kingdom Hearts''.
** It has gained one with ''VideoGame/DevilMayCry'' due to the same developers and gameplay mechanics. It went on to the point that the ''Devil May Cry'' sequel games are inspired by this game.
* FridgeHorror: Most of Halloween Town's residents are absent from the game. At one point, it's suggested that they're just hiding from Oogie, though it's not out of the question that he double-killed some of them during his takeover.
* GameBreaker: Jack's Pumpkin King form's ability to spread flame is already handy against clearing enemies, but it is very effective against most bosses, especially if one were to use a cheat code to make it so that Jack's Pumpkin King form has infinite power.
* HarsherInHindsight: This game puts more focus on the friendship between Jack and Dr. Finkelstein, with an entire [[IKnowYoureInThereSomewhereFight boss fight]] (and musical number) showcasing how far Jack will go for the old doctor. In ''Literature/TheNightmareBeforeChristmasLongLiveThePumpkinQueen'', however, [[spoiler:their friendship falls apart when it's revealed that Dr. Finkelstein kidnapped Sally from Dream Town and erased all memory of her past, causing Jack to sentence him to 100 years of community service in Dream Town.]]
-->'''Jack:''' ''(singing)'' Your intentions are evil, your thoughts are all bad, the thing that you work for is no more than a cad! When finally I get that foul brain out of you, you'll see no more foe, but a friend that is true!
* SugarWiki/HeReallyCanAct:
** While Oogie had some menacing moments in the film, Ken Page ''really'' knocks it out of the park showing just how terrifying he can be as the game reaches the end. He sounds genuinely threatening and imposing during his ''very'' angry delivery of "A Filthy Finale".
** After having Creator/DannyElfman as his singing double in the original film, Creator/ChrisSarandon actually does the singing as well as the speaking parts as Jack, and does a surprisingly outstanding job.
* SugarWiki/MostWonderfulSound: Racking up combos gets Jack to declare such things as ''Spine Tingling!'' ''BONE CHILLING!'' There's a wonderful energy to it that makes you feel like you're doing a great job. Even better is when you get it up to ''Horror Show'' and ''Pumpkin King''.
* NarmCharm: The very basic plot wouldn't feel out of place in a fanfic, the writing and dialogue can feel very forced at times, and the game's tone never quite seems to match up with the original film. Ultimately, though, the game itself is very solid, and seeing the characters in action again is extremely satisfying.
* NightmareFuel: Not as bad as the original movie, but not without its moments.
** Oogie controls Dr. Finkelstein by replacing his brain with...something else. A green brain with eyes at the front.
** The creepy theme that plays when Jack returns in the first level, as well as most prominently during "The Vampire Brothers" is appropriately eerie. The level itself also has a creepy lead-in, as you discover a note from the Vampires that they were trapped in their bat forms, and subsequently have to walk around the dark, scary homestead where they're hiding looking for them.
** Oogie's lair. Bad enough in the film, but it's apparently been expanded into a massive combination between a casino and hell itself.
** Santa is strung up to be essentially fed to a mechanical train which will chop him up into pieces if it gets a hold of him. If the player fails, we get a cutscene where Santa cries out a BigNo - [[NothingIsScarier and we never see him again]], just Jack's horrified reaction.
** When Oogie's on the brink of defeat, he refuses to accept it, and after landing at Holiday Trash Hill roars and summons forth all the bugs and junk from the junkyard. By the time Jack arrives, Oogie has gone OneWingedAngel, transforming into a ten story high monster with a ruptured head meant to resemble a crown, his belly churning and rippling from the sheer mass of filth inside him. The only saving grace is that he's incredibly slow, but given how poorly the townspeople took his takeover, Mega-Oogie could've laid waste to Halloweentown and any other holiday.
*** When Jack defeats the first phase, Oogie ''still'' refuses to give up, still towering over Jack even when he's been brought to his knees. Then the ''real'' fight begins, and Oogie is more angry, violent, and murderous than we've ever seen him. This is personal, and Oogie refuses to go down without a fight for his kingdom.
* SugarWiki/NoProblemWithLicensedGames: User ratings are around the 7-8/10 range.
* TearJerker:
** The reprise of "Sally's Song", where Sally laments everyone in Halloween Town being deceived by Oogie and Jack tries to assure her that everything will be alright.
*** Similar to the above is a somber music box arrangement which sounds almost appropriate for a game over screen or for a sad reunion between Jack and Sally.
** If the player fails to save Santa during the penultimate chapter, Santa and Jack let out a BigNo, and Jack slumps to the ground in despair, with Santa dying a horrible death off-screen.
* ThatOneBoss: The final battle against Oogie can be particularly grating, especially the RhythmGame finale, since this time screwing up the button prompts causes Jack to lose health, resulting in death if the player screws up too often.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: Oogie kidnaps five other holiday leaders aside from Santa. No, you don’t get to see who they are on account of them being stuffed in bags the whole time. Sure, we know the Easter Bunny is one of them thanks to the original movie, but that still leaves four leaders unaccounted for.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: You also spend the game collecting Holiday doors. No, you also don't get to visit any of the holiday worlds they lead to, with the obvious exception being Christmas Town.
** The game is kicked off when Jack leaves for two months to find new and interesting discoveries to improve next year's Halloween. When he comes back, his mission is never brought up again, and we never find out if he did find anything while he was gone.
** While remixing the musical numbers from the film is part of the whole point, some fans have expressed disappointment that the game only features a single new song.
