* AluminumChristmasTrees: Doctor Barber may be both a doctor and a barber, and may be a MadScientist, but as outlandish as his character's profession may seem, they were very, very real in Medieval Europe, not too far from where Stormalong would be in history.
* BaseBreakingCharacter:
** Flapjack himself. Either fans love him for his adorable nature and innocent personality and find his annoying antics toward K'nuckles funny, or detest him for his obliviousness, high-pitched girly voice, and AnnoyingLaugh a la SpongeBob.
** K'nuckles also gets this treatment due to being a pitiful ButtMonkey yet also a conceited Jerkass motivated by self-interest.
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: The show enjoys using these, often using them in conjunction with MoodWhiplash to throw the viewer off.
** K'nuckles selling fish heads in "Fish Heads."
** K'nuckles and Flapjack's seawater-induced hallucinations in "How the West Was Fun." Though they are hallucinations...
** "Pun Times with Punsie [=McKale=]" features a moment where Flapjack finds himself surprisingly holding his own against Punsie [=McKale=] in a pun-off....and then Punsie assaults poor Flapjack with a series of color-based puns as he transforms into a hideous rainbow creature that is so intense it causes Flapjack to faint.
* CrackShip: Yes, there are in fact a number of Flapjack/K'nuckles shippers out there....and let's just leave it at that, alright?
* DesignatedMonkey: Though K'nuckles can be an unpleasant person, some of his more humiliating moments can be either overblown or just uncalled for.
* EnsembleDarkHorse:
** Lolly Poopdeck is quite popular, despite his limited screentime.
** Sally Syrup is this mostly to shippers who find her and Flapjack adorable together. The writers attempted to deflate this in her second appearance by making her a lot meaner.
** Dr. Barber is definitely this, mmmmm, yes.
** Candy Wife has amassed quite a following due to her CreepyCute design, to the point where SelfFanservice of her is rather prevalent on the internet.
* FriendlyFandoms:
** With WesternAnimation/Chowder, as both shows are centered around excitable young protagonists named after food with older mentor figures, and are often considered to be the highlights of the infamous CN Real era. There's also a little with WesternAnimation/SanjayAndCraig due to the producer of that show being Thurop Van Orman himself as well as WesternAnimation/AdventureTime, WesternAnimation/GravityFalls, WesternAnimation/RegularShow and WesternAnimation/OverTheGardenWall as the creators of those shows all worked on Flapjack before moving on to their own things.
** Fans of the show are also friendly with fans of Jimmy Two-Shoes, as both shows are centered around young uber-optimistic, blonde-haired protagonists with lazy best friends, and both live in WretchedHive Cloudcuckoolands. Both shows aired on Teletoon in Canada and Cartoon Network in Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
* GeniusBonus:
** The town they live in is called Stormalong Harbor. Stormalong was a tall tale about a giant who became a sea captain.
** Dr. Barber's profession. Barbers were often relied upon for medical treatment such as bloodletting (still represented by the red stripe on the barbers' pole outside their shops) because they were often the only ones with sharp instruments to hand.
* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: The series was quite popular in Romania and Hungary and had many reruns. Probably because Romanians and Hungarians love BlackComedy as well as SurrealHumour. They also tend to like stories set in the past. Hungarian dub consists of Woolseyisms..
* MemeticMolester:
** Dr. Barber is commonly depicted in fanart and fanfics as a pedophile, often in regards to Flapjack. His generally creepy behavior doesn't help.
%% ** To a lesser extent, Captain K'nuckles and Lolly Poopdeck are subject to this trope as well.
* MemeticMutation: The scene of Captain K'nuckles being impressed by the dog Colonel doing a backflip has been become a meme, such as it being set to the tune of Shooting Stars.
* MisBlamed: It's a common opinion that the overuse of Gross Up Close Ups were shoehorned just to rival Creator/JohnKricfalusi's WesternAnimation/RenAndStimpy. However the gross-out theme in Flapjack is trope since the characters are pirates, whose lowest priority is hygiene.
* Moe:
** Flapjack himself is the biggest example on this show. He's an innocent and cheerful little boy who genuinely loves everyone and is very adventurous. He has adorable rosy cheeks and an effeminate voice to boot.
%% ** Sally as well, especially since she and Flappy make a very adorable ToyShip.
** K'nuckles and Bubbie as kids as shown in some of the show's flashbacks.
* NauseaFuel: Stormalong getting infected by the plague. And that might not even be the grossest scene if the "Blood Gnats" episode didn't exist.
* RetroactiveRecognition: As noted on the main page, this show has become more recognized in recent years for launching the careers of Creator/PendletonWard, J.G. Quintel, Patrick [=McHale=], and Creator/AlexHirsch, all of whom would later go on to create several famous and critically-acclaimed series.
* TheScrappy: Peppermint Larry is easily the least popular character on the show, due to his Jerkass behavior towards the main protagonists, which may be justified in the case of K'nuckles but in the case of Flap, not so much, especially given all the times that the little fellow has stood up for him. Also due to being far too childish and delusional to stand, being generally very unfunny and his annoying as hell laugh.
* SpiritualSuccessor: The cartoon can be a adaptation of Film/CabinBoy. Both are about pricey boys who are placed in crazy outlandish adventures in the high seas.
* UglyCute:
%% ** The Plant Man, who has an awesome little song.
** Captain K'Nuckles. In one episode, his love interest left him because she found him unattractive, when in actual fact he's got a very simple, even cute design -that is aside from the frequent GrossUpCloseUp which may show what he looks like in-universe.
* VindicatedByHistory: Like most of Creator/CartoonNetwork's shows made after 2004 but before the advent of WesternAnimation/AdventureTime and WesternAnimation/RegularShow in 2010, this one was branded as one of the reason's behind the channel's AudienceAlienatingEra (along with putting live-action shows alongside the animated shows). Only now do people see it as a decent show that didn't get the respect it deserved. It helps that Pen Ward, J.G. Quintel, Alex Hirsch, and Patrick McHale all worked on the first season of this show and all became successful in their own right.
* WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids: The series is ostensibly meant for a young audience, and at first glance it really doesn't look like it's not. After a few episodes though, the large quantities of SurrealHorror, graphic BodyHorror and dark humor were and still are more than a bit unnerving for its target demographic.
%% * TheWoobie: Flapjack has his moments, usually whenever he's sad.
