* CompleteMonster: [[BigBad Hsiao Mi]], the titular Big Boss, is a brutal factory owner who uses his factory as a drug smuggling operation. When his workers uncover the drugs, Hsiao Mi has them murdered and later kills their cousins when they try to investigate what happened. Having a riot brutally suppressed, he [[TheCorrupter corrupts]] the hero Cheng with alcohol and women before deciding Cheng can't be trusted, having Cheng's lover killed and then having his entire family slaughtered before trying to kill Cheng in a personal duel.
* HilariousInHindsight: The original prints of this film and ''Fist of Fury'' began with the Golden Harvest logo in the form of a Warner Bros. shield, superimposed on a wheatfield. Warner Bros. would end up releasing ''Enter the Dragon'' two years later.
* MoralEventHorizon: The titular Big Boss [[spoiler: murders Cheng's entire family.]]
* {{Narm}}:
** Creator/BruceLee's screaming in the ending fight scene might come off as this to some.
** At one point, Cheng punches a guy through a wall, and the hole is in the perfect shape of the villain. Bruce fought hard against this but director Lo Wei overruled him.
** The scene of Bruce dodging the guard dogs is completely absurd, with shots of Bruce leaping interspersed with shots of (possibly fake) dogs being thrown across the camera's view.
** The leg grappling scene between Bruce and the boss comes across like two men playing footsie in the grass, and it's hilarious.
* NightmareFuel: Cheng investigating the factory and finding the bodies and/or body parts of several missing workers encased in ice, including his own friends and family. The sequence is bathed in hellish red light to make it that much more unsettling.
* OnceOriginalNowOverdone: A number of things that make it stand out - brutal violence, a hero that acts until halfway through, a flawed hero in a modern setting - had became cliches since the premiere.
* OneSceneWonder: Nora Miao (Chan Wing-man) only has very limited screentime. She's the girl working at the food stand at the beginning of the movie and it even seems like she's being set up as Cheng's main love interest. However, it turns out she's only a minor character as Chiao Mei is actually the leading lady. Even the prostitute that Cheng sleeps with plays a more important role to the plot than Nora Miao does.
* RetroactiveRecognition: Nora Miao became known to Bruce Lee fandom with ''Fist of Fury'' and ''Way of the Dragon'' and later in films with Bruce Li and Jackie Chan. Until people realized that she was already in this film (she plays a small role as the ice drinks hawker).
* TearJerker: After they lost their trust in him, the rest of Cheng's family [[spoiler: are killed off before Cheng can make amends with them.]]
