* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: Most of the soundtrack. Remarkable in that the game's composers, Masanori Hikichi and Miyoko Kobayashi, are obscure even by video game music standards.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVAPcIzQFwc Those Who Stand In My Way,]] the boss music, deserves particular mention, as does, of course, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=774VbcSFodU Overcoming Everything,]] the FinalBoss music.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_H1PTP_w78 Inside the Door,]] which plays during the Resurrection cutscenes, is also very good.
** The overworld themes, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NFmgQqLmSo The Departure]] and [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7u4NBQGbJ6A Further Into the Wide World]] are also suitably fitting and epic.
** The music for Crysta, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8A9LGyANP8 A Place to Return to,]] is peaceful, wistful, and just slightly sad -- perfectly fitting for Crysta.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PS-p-rB_J3g Prime Blue]] is surprisingly detailed and majestic [[LongSongShortScene despite only playing in magishops.]]
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvXHXTHY4oA Hometown.]]
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oe9xpsexUUA Royd's Theme.]]
** Despite being {{That One Level}} that contains {{That One Boss}}, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8vJec2usNE Spain ~ Sylvain Castle]] is a thumping, ''badass'' song that is actually quite fitting for such the most infamous level of the game.
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: The entire Astarica sequence. [[spoiler: Some unknown voice commands Ark to drink from a goblet, which sends him into a fever dream featuring expies of various allies, culminating in a scene where Overworld Elle acts out-of-character and kills two people before mocking Ark who apparently dies from drinking out of a goblet.]] Nothing within the game hints at any of this and never comes up ever again. Ark even comments to this effect afterwards. The only reason to even watch this in the first place is to get one Starstone after it, which are key items to complete the game. Even then, it's not clear how relevant the sequence is to Ark's quest.
* CompleteMonster:
** [[spoiler:[[TheChessmaster Dark Gaia]]/[[{{Satan}} The Devil]] is the ruler of the Darkside who plans to take complete control over the world. Creating the village of Crysta and [[PlayerCharacter Ark]] to be used as his pawns for world domination, Gaia, posing as the village's Elder, manipulates Ark into opening Pandora's Box and crystallizing everybody in Crysta. Tricking Ark into awakening Dr. Beruga from his slumber in order to use his resources to start another [[TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt apocalypse]] and rule over a new world, Gaia brainwashes Elle's Darkside counterpart into killing a baby Ark, before later taunting Ark about how his entire life was a lie.]]
** [[MadScientist Dr. Beruga]] is a Nobel Peace Prize winner who has discovered the secret to immortality, which involves turning people into zombies. With this knowledge in mind, Beruga sought to [[TheSocialDarwinist eliminate the weak]] and create a world populated by those he deemed worthy of {{immortality|Immorality}}, with him as their ruler. Creating the Asmodeus virus that he used to wipe out 90% of humanity, Beruga sealed himself inside a chamber to be reawakened by Dark Gaia once the world has been restored. While in slumber, he establishes a cult that kidnaps people to be turned into zombies. Awakened by Ark, Beruga [[UngratefulBastard thanks him by killing him]] and unleashes the Asmodeus virus on Neotokio, killing everyone there.
* CultClassic: Considered by the lucky few who played it to be one of the finest action [=JRPGs=] on the SNES, if not ''the'' finest.
* EvenBetterSequel: While ''VideoGame/SoulBlazer, VideoGame/IllusionOfGaia'' and ''Terranigma'' are only loosely considered a trilogy, with the latter two being more like [[CreatorDrivenSuccessor Creator Driven Successors]] than sequels, ''Terranigma'' is widely considered to be easily the best of the three, and a big improvement over ''[[ContestedSequel Illusion of Gaia]].''
* GeniusBonus:
** [[spoiler:The resurrection of life on Earth follows the order shown in the Book of Genesis.]]
* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: In this case "Germans Love Terrangima". This game is often nicknamed as "The European VideoGame/ChronoTrigger". As in a JRPG that got some people of the other side of the Atlantic pretty jealous because it was not released there. Although the game wasn't as financially successful, it got a very devoted cult following.
* GoodBadTranslation: The somewhat good translation begins to fall apart more and more from the second half of the game, and it's debatable whether it completely shatters or [[SoBadItsGood magically redeems itself]] with Beruga's infamous "I thank you for arousing me" line.
%%* MemeticBadass: Ark.
%%* {{Narm}}: Mainly due to the GoodBadTranslation.
* OneSceneWonder: Dr. Beruga makes a strong impression as a villain despite only appearing in two scenes. [[spoiler:In the first he vaporizes the entire population of Neotokio. In the second he's subject to a brutal and karmic death when he's sucked into the propeller of his own airship.]]
* StrawmanPolitical: There's quite some confusion about Louis' political orientation. Most players call him a communist, but he has also been called a conservative. On the other hand, Jean's idea to use taxes to advance production, city infrastructure, technology, and cultural life could also be seen as a more refined communist position. One could argue that Louis simply represents populism in general in opposition to Jean's authentic and informed political decision-making.
** Jean's political position isn't "refined communist" so much as it is pretty clearly liberal Keynesianism: He isn't in favor of the state using taxes to build up nationalized or otherwise socialized production, but rather to fund private enterprise and innovation and create demand. And yes, Louis unites the populisms of the left and the right - specifically the religious right, with his rhetorics about how technological advancements don't make people happy and they should emphasize community and spirituality instead.
* TheScrappy: Perel, the [[TotallyRadical annoying stereotypical black 90s skateboarding kid]], who for some reason gets to be one of Ark's closest allies on the surface world. Meilin also annoys quite a few players, and she gets ''even more'' screentime.
* ThatOneBoss: '''Bloody Mary'''. She has higher HP than any of the bosses before her, while coupling it with [[MarathonBoss insane defense]]. Her attacks are also incredibly powerful. Fortunately (perhaps as an act of mercy), she's one of only a few bosses you can use magic on.
* ThatOneLevel:
** Dragoon Castle, with its stealth sections where guards move erratically and often block doorways so it takes forever to somehow get around them without getting caught, to its platform jumping with the game’s fiddly jumping controls. Luckily, unlike in other dungeons, you don’t lose health if you fall down a hole.
** Sylvain Castle, where spiders, skeletons, and AnimatedArmor attack you and you have to go looking for four gemstones (which are hidden almost too well). There's tightrope jumping which requires almost pixel perfect percision, with a weird momemtum gimmick leading to unnecessary damage. Plus there’s the grinding you’ll have to do in order to stand a chance against Bloody Mary.
* TheWoobie:
** [[spoiler:Both Elles; underworld Elle is frozen, has her childhood friend go on a journey that they probably won’t return from, is told to kill an infant, and then sacrifices herself to prevent Dark Yomi from killing Ark. Surface Elle had her parents and village killed by a king who then kidnapped her in the event that he can get the secret of Storkholm from her, lost her voice, killed the king and had to flee, kidnapped at least twice more, and then has the baby she’s taking care of kidnapped and almost killed by her underworld counterpart.]]
** [[spoiler:Ark - he brings back the entire surface world from dead and help it grow. But he can't be part of it as the final step of his quest involves death of him and his home world (which turned out to be nothing more than illusions).]]
