* AlternateCharacterInterpretation:
** [[spoiler:It doesn't have much bearing on the story, but your individual interpretation of exactly how smart Dimentio is can be very easily swayed if you choose not to believe his IMeantToDoThat claim after Dimension D ends up increasing your power as well as his own. This can have a little FridgeBrilliance to it if you agree with Tippi's theory that Dimentio is a psychopath. While many RealLife psychopaths are incredibly talented manipulators, they also tend to be impulsive and have trouble thinking their actions all the way through.]]
** While the majority of the fandom view [[spoiler:Count Bleck]] as a tortured soul who thought the destruction of the world would end his pain, there are a few people who view him as a selfish man who wanted to take the world with him out of spite. Or even [[TakeAThirdOption both]].
** When trying to convince the heroes with his WeCanRuleTogether speech, [[spoiler:Dimentio]] tells them that Count Bleck's true intention was to let all worlds die completely, [[spoiler:without planning to replace them with more perfect ones like he'd promised his minions he was going to]]. It isn't clarified whether he was being truthful with this or making things up to make the Count look worse, and even though Tippi does argue that he's lying afterward, she doesn't specify which of his claims are untrue, if she even knows.
* AntiClimaxBoss:
** Bonechill, the "fearsome" boss of the Skellobits in Chapter 7, is infamous for this. He can be challenging with Mario, Peach, or Bowser, but if the player uses Luigi (which they are likely to, given that they just recently unlocked him and the recent stages have required a lot of platforming) then he's a ''complete pushover''. Use Luigi's Super Jump maybe twice, bounce on his head under the ceiling, and he'll go down in ''seconds''.
** Count Bleck and [[spoiler:Super Dimentio]], the [[FinalBoss Final Bosses]], are both rather easy to beat, especially compared to the previous games' final bosses. Their attacks are already slow and easy to dodge, and their attacks don't do a lot of damage (Count Bleck's main attack only does ''3''), at a point where you likely have around 60 HP and several healing items. Unless you're [[SelfImposedChallenge deliberately underlevelled]], they won't pose much of a threat.
* ArcFatigue: A common criticism with the game is that starting with Chapter 5, the levels can start dragging on for far longer than needed. Certain levels can go on for ''triple'' the length of an average Mario level, or even the arcs in previous ''Paper Mario'' games.
* AssPull:
** After [[spoiler:Super Dimentio]] is defeated in the climax, he is said to have left behind "a shadow of his power" to continue controlling the Chaos Heart just long enough to ensure the destruction of every world. This revelation comes right out of the blue – ''nowhere'' in the story is [[spoiler:Dimentio]] (or anyone else, for that matter) implied to have such an ability, even with the power of the Chaos Heart; this is the ''only'' time it's ever mentioned in the game; it's never shown or explained what exactly "leaving behind a shadow of one's power" even ''means''; and it just feels like a flimsy excuse for the Chaos Heart to not immediately disappear ''[[spoiler:again]]'' so the scene where [[spoiler:Tippi and Count Bleck renew their love for each other]] can happen.
** [[spoiler:Luvbi]] returning in the postgame. Not even [[spoiler:Luvbi herself]] knows how it happened.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: See AwesomeMusic.PaperMario.
* BaseBreakingCharacter: For some people, Francis is so over the top he feels more like an outright insult towards nerds/geeks/otakus, rather than a parody of said groups. For others, Francis is incredibly fun and even [[TakeThatAudience cathartic]] to watch for the same reasons.
* BestBossEver:
** [[spoiler:[[FinalBoss Super Dimentio.]]]] Although he's not as hard as the previous games' [[spoiler:endbosses]], he's immensely fun to fight against, with some really crazy attacks, moves, and has [[SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic The Ultimate Show blaring in the background.]] Not to mention that you're basically fighting [[spoiler:LUIGI]] of all people, [[spoiler:even though he's being possessed by Dimentio]].
** The first major boss, Fracktail, is pretty awesome as well. It's a BackgroundBoss that, the moment it attacks you, you have to flip dimensions to jump into his back, and then you have to throw objects into its core at his head to harm it, definitely making for a fun and memorable (albeit easy) experience.
** Mr. L could be considered this based on the fact that he's [[spoiler:a brainwashed Luigi]] alone, but the fights against ''both'' Brobots are the best parts about it. You're fighting a giant [[spoiler:Luigi]]-shaped robot with plenty of weapons to throw at you, and the ways to defeat these bots are pretty entertaining in and of themselves. Special mention goes to the first Brobot fight, which acts like a boss to a side-scrolling shoot-em-up game, complete with power-up chocolate!
* BestLevelEver:
** Chapter 3, with its pixel-like art design, getting a lot of useful Pixls, and ''especially'' Francis and using him to poke fun at {{Otaku}} people.
** Chapter 6 gets praise for being such a massive WhamEpisode: [[spoiler:its depiction of a world reduced to literally nothing [[SurprisinglyCreepyMoment still haunts players to this day]]]].
** Chapter 7 is well liked due to its depiction of the Greek Underworld and biblical Heaven, as well as just about every chapter having a memorable moment: 7-1 has you go through the River Twygz to find [[spoiler:Luigi]], 7-2 contains a boss fight that's a ShoutOut to ''VideoGame/EarthBound1994'', 7-3 has the different-colored apples and their varying effects on Princess Peach, and 7-4 has [[spoiler:an all-out brawl between the Nimbis of the Overthere and the Skellobits contained in the Underwhere, as well as one of the saddest "AlasPoorScrappy" moments in existence]], even if [[spoiler:that last one is undone in the postgame]].
** [[TheVeryDefinitelyFinalDungeon Chapter 8]], thanks to its amazing atmosphere, being one of the more challenging parts of the game, the DuelBoss fights at the end of each part, and of course, the [[FinalBoss final battle]] against [[BigBad Count Bleck]], [[spoiler:which is then followed by [[BestBossEver Super Dimentio]]]].
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment:
** Flipping to [=3D=] around Mimi in her spider form reveals ''gears'' inside of her. This is never explained, and she displays no other indications that she's a robot or any other kind of machine.
** After the first two Dorguys, you expect the 3rd one to do a quiz as well. Instead, it summons the Underchomp, a multi-colored, three-headed Chain Chomp. What's weird is the battle against it, which takes the form of a retro RPG, complete with a new arrangement of the midboss theme. There's no in-game reason for why this fight is so different, and when the Underchomp is defeated, the Dorguy lets you pass with no mention of the sudden genre shift.
* BrokenBase:
** While the release of ''[[VideoGame/PaperMarioStickerStar Sticker Star]]'' has largely subsided this, the change of gameplay from a traditional turn-based RPG to a 2.5D platformer with RPG elements originally resulted in massive base break. Even today, there is a debate on whether it’s good on its own right, tolerable due to the amazing story/in comparison to the awful gameplay in ''Sticker Star'', or still just outright bad. (The release of later games has mostly led to the fanbase falling under the first two options.)
** The art style is also commonly brought up by detractors of the game. Is the design of the [[NonPlayerCharacter Non-Playable Characters]] a cool stylized approach of computerized shape art, or just lazy and poorly made?
** In light of ''[[VideoGame/PaperMarioStickerStar Sticker Star]]'' and ''[[VideoGame/PaperMarioColorSplash Color Splash]]'s'' own divisive reactions, another debate has risen; did this game start the series' AudienceAlienatingEra, or was it its last good game before said AudienceAlienatingEra?
** The story of the game is either beloved for all the dramatic and darker than normal for a Mario game aspects or disliked for those exact same reasons. It's not uncommon to find either view points.
* CheeseStrategy:
** The game is not balanced around Bowser's damage output as a MightyGlacier, and combining him with Carrie for better movement, Thudley/Cudge for stronger hits, or Dottie to make him unseeable can end every boss fight in seconds and make the Pits risk-free. Most challenge runs discourage using Bowser so that the difficulty curve can be maintained.
** Bonechill is normally one of the tougher bosses, as he has strong freezing attacks and ignores Bowser's power by being too high for him to hit, leading to a slower fight requiring Thoreau. However, this is one of the bosses Luigi is present for, and he can super-jump into Bonechill's head at any time for heavy damage and then bounce on it several times in a row. Bonechill has no way of countering this (it resets his pattern and he only has one phase), turning the Underwhere's SatanicArchetype into a pushover.
** Wracktail can be easily defeated by having Peach use her parasol to jump on his antenna after he loops around. If you have Luigi, he's even easier, since Luigi can just use his Super Jump to reach his antenna and bounce off of it.
* CommonKnowledge: It is often believed that Dimentio [[spoiler:kills Luigi, Mario, Peach, and Bowser.]] In reality, as explained by Queen Jaydes, he just [[spoiler:teleports them to the afterlife, hence why they aren't turned into Shaydes and are allowed to leave.]]
* CompleteMonster: [[spoiler:[[MonsterClown Dimentio]] masquerades as a humorous henchman under Count Bleck's employ, while [[TheManInFrontOfTheMan secretly harboring more sinister designs]]. Dimentio [[TheChessmaster manipulates every faction towards his ultimate goal]] to use the Chaos Heart to obliterate reality so that he could create a new one [[InTheirOwnImage under his control]]. To this end, Dimentio brainwashes Fracktail and sends him out to be killed by Mario; experiments on his own subordinates with the brain-jacking Floro Sprouts; seemingly murders Mario and his friends by sending them to the Underwhere; and secretly implants a Floro Sprout within Luigi's mind to revert him back to Mr. L. After Count Bleck is defeated, Dimentio attempts to kill him, seemingly murdering Nastasia in the process. Dimentio seizes Luigi as his host in the final battle and, after his defeat, uses the Chaos Heart to [[SuicidalCosmicTemperTantrum try to destroy reality]] as an act of spite.]]
* ContestedSequel: While most people agree that the story is good, the removal of turn-based combat didn't sit well with a lot of fans, and there are ''lot'' of arguments about whether or not the gameplay is good. Many ''Paper Mario'' fans have warmed up to it since then, especially after ''Sticker Star'' came out, but there's still quite a number of people who aren't so receptive, especially those who simply can’t get behind some of the game's more awkward ideas and obtuse puzzles.
* DemonicSpiders:
** The Hammer Brothers return to their original nightmare status with their erratic throwing patterns and solid damage. In the Pit of 100 trials, their hammers can even fly down ''through the platforms'', meaning they can still land a cheap shot from way across the room.
** Magikoopas are dangerous and must be approached with caution, because their magic attacks are uninterrupted even when you hit them, making it all too easy to get caught in trading blows with them.
** The Ninja class enemies (Ninjoe, Ninjohn, and Ninjerry). They have highly erratic movement patterns (which includes jumping), are quick, and can throw shurikens in any direction with next to no warning. And when you finally manage to land an attack on them? They love to disappear, leave behind bombs, and re-appear after the explosion. Unscathed. It is no exaggeration to say that the rooms in either Pit of 100 Trials containing these guys are harder than the rest of them combined.
** The Muth enemies have literally hundreds of HP (the variant found in the Flopside Pit of 100 Trials has 255!), have rather strong attacks, and are quite large, to the point where you need Luigi to jump over them. Fortunately, they don't appear very often throughout the game, only in two areas and the Pits of 100 Trials.
** The Magiblot enemies hide in the shadows and attack by quickly appearing next to you and firing off their spells, making them very hard to avoid and damage. Blues have 25 HP and 4 attack, yellows have 20 HP and 5 attack, and reds have 15 HP and 6 attack. And the dark variants? They have some of the highest stats among regular enemies with 40 HP and ''10 attack''.
** Ruff Puffs float in the air and hit hard with their electric projectile attack. They're especially dangerous in the Pit of 100 Trials due to the low ceilings making it tough to jump on them.
* DracoInLeatherPants: Despite his inhuman actions, Dimentio is likely one of the most popular villains in the franchise and has oodles of fans willing to excuse his atrocities because he's suave, and for that matter hilarious.
* EnjoyTheStorySkipTheGame: While the gameplay is [[BrokenBase divisive]], almost everyone agrees this game has one of the best stories of all the Mario [=RPGs=], and most of its characters are incredibly popular.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: Mr. L, despite being just a brainwashed Luigi, is one of if not the most popular characters in the game mostly for his really cool EvilCostumeSwitch as well as the fun Brobot boss fights. He also has an AwesomeEgo.
* EpilepticTrees:
** It's widely speculated that Mimi is [[spoiler:the Pixl Queen, the flawed original attempt at creating a Pixl that turned out evil]]. And also that [[spoiler:she's the result of a witch's experiments to try and create a potion that allows the drinker to shapeshift]]. Another likely contender for that role is [[spoiler:Shadoo, Bonus Boss at the bottom of the Flopside Pit of 100 Trials, who plans on killing and replacing the Four Heroes and using their Pixls to take revenge on the Ancients]].
** A theory on Dimentio is that he wrote the Dark Prognosticus (which would make him [[ReallySevenHundredYearsOld pretty damn old]]). There's also the question as to why Tippi recognizes him the first time she sees him. He's also [[spoiler:speculated to be the son of the guy who first created the Pixls, with his daughter being the one who, outraged at his treatment of the Pixls, became the Pixl Queen and led the Pixls to war against the Ancients. The son vanished as a result of this debacle]]. If all of the above were true, [[spoiler:''that means that Mimi and Dimentio are '''siblings''''']].
** It's theorized that Dimentio is [[http://mario.wikia.com/wiki/Merloo Merloo]] (or perhaps his descendant), one of the four sages in the Tribe of Ancients. Both are described as being powerful, dimension-controlling magicians. If Merloo and Dimentio are the same person, this means that Dimentio was a leader of the Tribe of Ancients, and he wrote the Light Prognosticus. Some fans even combine this with the previous theory to say he wrote ''both'' prophecies as a way of [[PlayingBothSides manipulating both would-be heroes and villains into doing his bidding]].
** It's been speculated that Shadoo could possibly be the Pixl Queen, claiming many key details match up. As Carson states, the Pixl Queen was created by the Ancients, and tried to overthrow the Ancients with a Pixl Army after developing a grudge against them, like how Shadoo loathed the Ancients and was planning to use the clones of the 4 Heroes to save the multiverse from destruction in their place and use the Pixls to enact revenge in the process. Also, the Pixl Queen's fate was unrevealed, and she was never explicitly stated to have been killed, just beaten, implying she survived the fight (and proceed to hide down in the Flopside pit to wait thousands of years for the heroes to come for revenge). The Pixl Queen was also said to have "powers of illusion", which she used to obstruct herself, similar to how Shadoo hid the clones, the Warp Pipe, and even... Shadoo.
* EvilIsCool:
** Luigi is pretty cool on his own, but Mr. L is Luigi working for the villains after encountering Nastasia. That's ''pretty awesome''.
** Dimentio, thanks to his [[LaughablyEvil hilarious personality]] [[spoiler:and [[ManipulativeBastard manipulative skills]]]].
* {{Fanon}}:
** Some have taken the puffed up and aggressive Mr. L character from this game and mutated him into Luigi's darker, brooding alter ego, with all the standard trimmings.
** Count Bleck's father is assumed to be the chief of the Tribe of Darkness, especially in Japan.[[note]][[https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/スーパーペーパーマリオ Japanese Wikipedia page for the game]] states that Bleck seems to be the chief's son.[[/note]] It's likely because of the implication that one must be the chief in order to punish his tribesmen for rule-breaking.
* FauxSymbolism:
** Chapter 7 is full of it, such as the forbidden apple that brings trouble when eaten, the chapter boss being [[spoiler:a former Nimbi who was exiled to the Underwhere]], the Nimbis' battle with the Skellobits, and the fact that [[spoiler:the daughter of a seemingly deistic figure sacrifices herself to save the universe]].
** Heroes foretold by a prophecy as Chosen Ones. Chapter 7 pushes it even further, as those same heroes are sent to the afterlife and come back even stronger from both Hell and Heaven.
** The original Pixl created by the Ancients rebelled against her creators and tried to bring about a rebellion only to fail and be cast out. So, Pixl {{Satan}}.
* FranchiseOriginalSin: This was the first game to completely break from the turn-based ActionCommand system introduced in the original Paper Mario and expanded on in Thousand Year Door. This arguably paved the way for the experimental systems in Sticker Star and Color Splash, which have been subject of heavy critique.
* GameBreaker:
** Through a very simple and easy set-up, it's possible to reach level 99 before you even ''begin the second chapter''. By saving a Squig, you can continuously jump on top of its projectiles without touching the ground, creating a combo that racks up points that grow ''exponentially'' with each stomp. The rest of the game is completely invalidated, Bowser or not.
** In an already relatively easy game, using Carrie with Bowser (plus Bone-In Cut and other power-upgrading items) means that the game almost becomes a complete joke, since Bowser is normally a MightyGlacier, but using Carrie while controlling Bowser turns him into an unstoppable LightningBruiser, especially in higher levels.
** Bowser and Thudley isn't half bad, either, since their damage bonuses stack. With the two of them together, even major bosses (up to and including the FinalBoss) go down like chumps.
** Peach uses her umbrella as a helmet when crouching, which makes her entirely immune to damage.
** Dottie allows your character to become really small, with the bonus effect of enemies not being able to see you. What makes this a game breaker is that you retain the damage stat you have at normal size. In the Flipside and Flopside Pits of 100 Trials, this can allow you to clear multiple floors without fear of dealing with cramped corridors or enemies with projectiles, saving you a lot of health.
** Cooking is far simpler and easier to take advantage of than in the previous games. For example, the Fried Shroom Plate sells for more than how much a Shroom Shake costs, resulting in a means to make a straight profit (in addition to being a straight upgrade).
** Another easy way to make money is to make use of a Capture Card SP and capture an Amazy Dayzee card in Chapter 5-2. The Amazy Dayzee card sells for far more than what it cost to buy the Capture Card SP (100 to buy the Catch Card SP, 300 to sell the Amazy Dayzee card). Once your level is high enough, you can consistently catch them with regular Catch Cards and sell them for an even greater profit, as basic Catch Cards only cost 20 coins.
* GoddamnedBats:
** Megabites and Gigabites fly around at high speeds where you can't reach them, and can only be attacked when they swoop downward. They also take 1 damage per hit no matter how high your attack is, making them very tedious and annoying foes. They're even worse the Pit of 100 Trials, where the enclosed space and platforms can screw up their flight A.I, making them even more erratic and unpredictable.
** Shlurps can only be defeated by using Boomer to blow them up from the inside, which can take a while, especially the dark variants, which must be blown up ''thrice''.
** Crazy Dayzees have a long range sing attack which puts you to sleep, which is a big reason why 3-3 is ThatOneLevel.
* GoddamnedBoss: Francis' attacks are pretty easy to avoid, but the small window of time he's visible and vulnerable, combined with the fact that you can only tell where he is while invisible by flipping and can't see to the left while in 3D mode, means you may be fighting him for quite a while.
* HarsherInHindsight:
** If you beat [[spoiler:Shadoo]] in the Flopside Pit of 100 Trials, you get a post-battle comment, unique to whichever character you were using. Luigi's line is "Even if he was a fake... [[spoiler:I don't ever wanna fight my Bro]] again!". All well and good if you go through the Pit after completing the game, but, though difficult, it can also be completed ''before'' [[spoiler:fighting Super Dimentio.]]
** As demonstrated by ''VideoGame/PaperMarioTheOrigamiKing'', [[spoiler:Bleck & Tippi wouldn't be the last BigBad and ExpositionFairy duo to sacrifice themselves for the greater good at the end of their game]].
* HilariousInHindsight:
** ''VideoGame/SuperMarioOdyssey's'' main plot invovlves ''another'' arranged marriage between the Bowser and Peach. Seems as if Bowser didn't learn from this experience.
** One of the items on Francis' wish list is a [[VideoGame/SuperMarioBros3 Tanooki Suit]] with real tanooki fur. When the suit made an official return in ''VideoGame/SuperMario3DLand'', [=PETA=] threw a hissy fit over [[FurAndLoathing wearing tanooki fur]]. Of course, normally, this would be Harsher, but this is PETA we're talking about.
** In some of the levels, there are cracks that appear to be scattered over the universe. Skip to 2010, and cracks in the universe are featured in ''Series/DoctorWho''.
** One of the [[https://www.mariowiki.com/images/thumb/a/a0/DimentioSuperPaperMario.png/200px-DimentioSuperPaperMario.png official portraits of Dimentio]] has him making a pose oddly similar to a dab.
** In the Sammer Kingdom, each samurai that the player faces has a bizarre, borderline nonsensical name. The ninth opponent is named "Screaming Mantis". The very next year, ''VideoGame/MetalGearSolid4GunsOfThePatriots'' would release, and name its QuirkyMinibossSquad leader "Screaming Mantis".
** Around the time of ''Series/TheSuperMarioBrosSuperShow'', there was an anti-drug PSA of Wrestling/CaptainLouAlbano as Mario telling people that if they did drugs, they'd "go to Hell before [you] die". In this game, [[spoiler:Dimentio sends Mario, Luigi, and Bowser to the Underwhere, the game's equivalent of Hell, but Queen Jaydes notes that none of them are actually dead]].
** At the time of the game’s release, the Pixl named “Boomer” had his name taken at face value: a reference to his exploding ability. But after the explosion of the “Okay, Boomer” meme in 2019, modern players are more likely to think of “Okay, Boomer” jokes upon hearing his name instead.
** At the end of the game, Mimi vows to turn over a new leaf and start up her own cafe. Seems she was very successful, as "[[https://www.mimiscafe.com/ Mimi's Cafe]]" is a chain of restaurants in America.
** At the end of the Swoon.exe sequence, Francis specifically calls out Peach for having broken his graphics card. At the time of the game's release, it was just another thing to distinguish Francis as a nerd, but in the 2020s, the combination of the rise of custom-built computers, infamous problems with graphics card scalping, and repeated oversaturation of the market with high-quality options over cheaper graphics cards means that Francis' frustration suddenly feels a ''lot'' more reasonable than it was meant to be!
* HoYay: In the finale, Dimentio tells Luigi [[IHaveYouNowMyPretty he has him now]] and [[spoiler:seemingly]] takes him with him. He takes it further by [[spoiler:his FusionDance with him]].
* ItsEasySoItSucks: Aside from the unexpectedly changed gameplay, this is one of the two main complaints thrown at this game. While the previous games weren't particularly hard (unless you apply {{Self Imposed Challenge}}s) they weren't exactly easy either, as they had several difficult moments and generally tough boss fights. In ''Super Paper Mario'', enemies have relatively low health, your attack power is tied directly to your level instead of Boot and Hammer upgrades like in the previous games, there are many GameBreaker techniques (most of them tied to Bowser) and items, most bosses are [[AntiClimaxBoss pushovers]] (which means that their creative designs and fun gimmicks barely get to show themselves), and the lack of badges meaning that there's no easy way to do a SelfImposedChallenge beyond only playing as Mario for most of the game and not using some Pixls. The removal of the turn-based RPG gameplay also means most fights simply won't last more than a few seconds, since you can deal with most enemies and bosses by simply chaining the GoombaStomp, to the point that even the ''FinalBoss'' can be taken down in under a minute this way once the fight gets going. That said, the levels themselves can be fairly challenging at times, [[HardLevelsEasyBosses especially in comparison to most bosses]].
* LessDisturbingInContext: Not only is the game is about an OmnicidalManiac trying to destroy the ''multiverse'' as a DisproportionateRetribution, but an entire chapter of the story is also dedicated to the heroes' murder and their descent into the underworld. It's actually presented in a humorous tone, and the characters actually make it to heaven before continuing on with their quest.
* LikeYouWouldReallyDoIt: Even when [[FridgeHorror looking at]] the [[{{Deconstruction}} darker plot]] implications, it would be a hard sell to have a Nintendo game where the main Mario cast actually [[KilledOffForReal dies]].
* LoveToHate: [[spoiler:Dimentio]] is widely regarded to be one of the most evil and depraved characters in the Mario franchise, but his [[FauxAffablyEvil charming personality]] is what makes him so memorable to fans, with many wanting him to return in a future Mario title.
* MemeticBadass:
** Mr. L, the masked HumongousMecha-riding villain, beloved for his showiness and for [[PaperThinDisguise definitely not being Luigi]].
** Luigi himself gets this, as his super jump deals ''double damage'', gets anyone into high places, and can be used to give a quick CurbStompBattle to Bonechill. The game also takes note this to some degree, as the description leading up to 8-4 calls him, "the brave Luigi" showcasing he TookALevelInBadass after being constantly portrayed as the franchise's CowardlyLion. It's probably why Dimentio decides to take him off the party by fusing with him in the FinalBattle, otherwise it'd be too easy! All summed up by a [=YouTube=] comment.
-->'''Bonechill:''' [[Film/TheAvengers2012 I have an army.]]\
'''Mario:''' We have a Luigi.
* MemeticLoser: Bonechill, due to his cool design and backstory being undermined by [[AntiClimaxBoss a boss fight that can be ended in less than half a minute]]. Nearly every fan sees him as a joke.
* MemeticMolester: In the Japanese fandom, Dimentio is perceived as one to Luigi likely because of his line that he has him now [[spoiler:and his FusionDance with him]] in the finale.
* MemeticMutation:
** Who is Mr L? [[labelnote:Explanation]]Given that Mr. L is obviously Luigi and no one knew his secret identity until Dimentio said that Luigi is Mr L, people joked that they never revealed who he is.[[/labelnote]]
** "My first love was an anime character!" [[labelnote:Explanation]]A question in Francis' quiz, which you must answer "Yes" to. Often used to mock Waifu fans.[[/labelnote]]
** BOWSER'S ARMS! [[labelnote:Explanation]]Popularized by {{LetsPlay/Chuggaaconroy}} when he notices how fast Bowser flails his arms when he's surprised. See [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYW9MuRO5lA here.]][[/labelnote]]
** [[spoiler:Count Bleck]] is a {{Yandere}}. [[labelnote:Explanation]]Often used in the Japanese fandom because his motives for being an OmnicidalManiac was [[spoiler:[[LoveMakesYouEvil the loss of his love]]]].[[/labelnote]]
** Dimentio has a VillainousCrush on Luigi. [[labelnote:Explanation]]Due to the HoYay aspects of the game, Dimentio's interest in Luigi is [[{{Flanderization}} Flanderized]] in the Japanese fandom, turning him into a MemeticMolester.[[/labelnote]]
** Breadward.[[labelnote:Explanation]]A fake Pixl made up by Mimi as a bribe when in disguise. [[{{WebVideo/Vinesauce}} Vinny of Vinesauce fame]] is convinced that it's real and has a distinct ''determination'' to get it.[[/labelnote]]
* MoralEventHorizon:
** Dimentio crosses it when [[spoiler:it's revealed that he [[ManipulativeBastard manipulated everyone]] so he can [[OmnicidalManiac remake the universe]] and when he's defeated, tries to destroy everything as an act of spite]].
** [[spoiler:Blumiere's father]] ''kickstarts the entire plot from behind the scenes'' far on the other side of this trope before the game begins. [[spoiler:When his attempt to end the relationship between his son and Timpani failed, he cursed her to wander between dimensions as a last resort, almost killing her in the process]], simply to [[spoiler:keep his tribe's magic pure and strong]]. His actions are so atrocious that [[spoiler:his son]] snaps and becomes the WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds he is today.
* {{Narm}}:
** The end of Chapter 7 is easily one of the saddest, most heartrending scenes in the game. When presented with the Pure Heart, each of the four characters has an appropriate response to the scene, except for Luigi, who simply exclaims "OK, Grambi!" and "Okey-dokey!" It comes off as though he wasn't even paying attention and didn't notice any of the events that just unfolded. What makes it particularly bad is that the boss preceding this moment is an absolute pushover if you fight him as Luigi, meaning he's the one most players are likely to have out when this happens.
** The UnusualEuphemism of [[NeverSayDie referring to death as "ending your game"]], while amusing in comedic scenes, severely undercuts serious moments like [[spoiler:Bleck expressing regret that Tippi must perform a HeroicSacrifice alongside him]] in the ending.
* NeverLiveItDown: Dimentio is often played up by the fanbase as the only ''Mario'' villain who's succeeded in [[spoiler:killing the heroes, when he sends Mario and his friends to the Underwhere]]. Setting aside the fact that villains like Bowser have come about as close, this is ignoring the stated fact that [[spoiler:''Dimentio didn't even kill them''. As Queen Jaydes reveals, he only transported them to the Underwhere under the guise of killing them, but they were all still very much alive.]]
* PlayAlongMeme: No-one InUniverse is able to recognize the real identity of Count Bleck's enigmatic minion Mister L. And despite the fact that [[spoiler: he's obviously a brainwashed Luigi]], neither are fans of the game.
* RonTheDeathEater: [[WebAnimation/Supermarioglitchy4sSuperMario64Bloopers SMG4]] turned Francis from an awkward nerd who just wanted friends to a mass-kidnapper of [[Franchise/{{Splatoon}} Inklings]] [[ItMakesSenseInContext so he could use their ink to power a device that can create real life anime characters so it could make an island full of them]].
* ScrappyMechanic: Unlike the previous two games, the interface takes no heed of whether there are any enemies nearby concerning when you can use attack items. This can cause you to unintentionally waste these items if you try to use them in the wrong scenario, since they’ll still disappear from your inventory despite that they didn’t actually do anything.
* SelfImposedChallenge:
** If you really wanted to, you ''could'' earn back the rupees for Mimi's vase in the way that she wants you to rather than the much easier and faster way that the game provides for you. [[PoopSocking It is not recommended]].
** Doing a low score/level run of this game, which means avoiding anything that can give you points as much as possible. This includes not defeating enemies unless required for a puzzle, not collecting power ups, not destroying enemy projectiles, not performing tricks, and not using items that give you points when used. Some of the trickiest parts of this challenge are moving away all the enemies near Bowser's fort in 3-1 before blowing it up so that they don't get defeated and give you points, the Brobot boss in 4-4 which can only be damaged by the missile power up due to its defense exceeding your attack, and the Underchomp boss in 7-2 if you don't use items or Piccolo.
** Completing the Flipside Pit of 100 Trials as soon as you get Boomer. Made easier depending on how many levels you grind for beforehand, but still tricky nonetheless with the limited characters, pixels, and items you have.
* SequelDifficultyDrop: The first two games weren't that hard, but ''Super Paper Mario'' has a noticeable drop on difficulty compared to them since most enemies die in very few hits and you can easily bypass them thanks to the Flipping mechanic. There are also several things that can make the game much easier than usual, such as controlling Bowser while using Carrie for a speed boost. The bosses also require less strategy than in the previous games, with many of them being merely using the GoombaStomp on them over and over, even the final bosses. Even [[{{Superboss}} Shadoo]] can be a complete joke as it's no different from any other boss except for having much higher stats, while the [[VideoGame/PaperMario64 Final Master]] and [[VideoGame/PaperMarioTheThousandYearDoor Bonetail]] could become a nightmare for the unprepared.
* {{Squick}}: Mimi's neck snapping in her transformation to turn into a spider, which has similar sound effects. It's even an InUniverse one, as Tippi and Merlee feel very disturbed.
--> '''Tippi''': YUCK!
* ThatOneLevel: There are two sections in the game that involve a lot of {{Padding}}, much like Chapters 4 and 7 in the Thousand Year Door. Although this time one can circumvent these events through [[GuideDangIt looking up the combinations on the internet ahead of time]], doing these the intended way is still a time sink, and not in a good way.
** Chapter 2-3's Rubee grind. You're assigned to gather one million Rubees to pay off a debt in the mansion. You do this by doing mundane tasks such as hitting an item block or running on a hamster wheel. You're meant to gather enough Rubees to pay off some informants regarding [[spoiler:passwords to the hamster wheel room and the secret safe of one million Rubees]] to complete the chapter properly, but it still takes a while to gather the required Rubees for those tasks.
** [[TreeTrunkTour Chapter 3-3.]] One false move and you're back to the bottom. It's also crawling with Crazee Dayzees, which have a bit of a MortonsFork in their song attack; take it and you get sent to sleep and take damage, but block it with Peach's parasol and you're very likely to get knocked down some distance.
** [[{{Prehistoria}} Chapter 5-1's]] block puzzle. You run into a series of blank blocks. You're meant to head back to the village and ask one of the citizens for the password. [[{{Padding}} He will only give it to you after you manually type "please"]] ''[[{{Padding}} five times]]''. To add insult to injury, the password itself is ''incredibly'' long, often requiring it to be written down. To say you're better off looking up the password online is an understatement.
** Chapter 7-3. Not only is it a vertical level like 3-3, it's [[MarathonLevel much longer]], takes place [[LevelInTheClouds in the sky]] (so there's the risk of BottomlessPits wearing down your health), and the scenery is little else but clouds, making it both boring aesthetically and easy to lose your place if you fall.
* ThatOneSidequest: The Flopside Pit of 100 Trials. Same concept as the Flipside Pit, but with dark, tougher versions of the enemies encountered there. You also have to complete it twice in order to face its boss. You better bring the best healing items along with you, because facing the boss while being low on HP and with no opportunities to heal is not recommended.
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: Those who wanted the usual [=RPG=] [[BrokenBase weren't exactly happy with this game]].
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: Bonechill has much potential to be an EnsembleDarkhorse ThatOneBoss: being a ShownTheirWork SatanicArchetype, invoking a HellInvadesHeaven NearVillainVictory, and following in the footsteps of [[VideoGame/PaperMario64 the Crystal King]] and [[VideoGame/PaperMarioTheThousandYearDoor Magnus von Grapple 2.0 (Lord Crump)]]. Instead, he's an AntiClimaxBoss who's all but forgotten as soon as he's defeated. Granted, The Void is far more pressing at the moment; but it still feels like a complete waste of a VillainOfAnotherStory.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: Sadly, Sammers Kingdom in Chapter 6 goes mostly unexplored in the game, especially since [[spoiler: it gets destroyed and doesn't get restored until you beat the game]] but even by then you still only have the 100 Sammer Guy challenge, and what makes it especially painful is that {{Wutai}} is a relatively unique level theme for a Mario game.
* UnderusedGameMechanic:
** The second phase of the boss fight with Mr. L in Chapter 4 returns to space, meaning you use Squirps to shoot, but it also throws in unique arcade-style powerups like increased speed, missiles, and clones that mimic the original Squirps. This boss battle is the only time these powerups ever appear.
** The Underchomp battle in Chapter 7 is the only time that the game switches from a platformer with RPG elements to a full-on turn-based RPG (albeit more reminiscent of Earthbound and Dragon Quest instead of previous Paper Mario games). As neat as the fight is, once the Underchomps are defeated, there are no more battles like it for the rest of the game, even in the extra side-content.
%% UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: Count Bleck and his minions have been deemed not an example [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=15194292110A03429900&page=6#comment-131 here]]. Don't add back without approval.
* ViewerGenderConfusion:
** Some people on Website/YouTube say they mistook Dimentio for a female at first.
** King Croacus. It's implied that Floro Sapiens have no sexual dimorphism. All four paintings of the former rulers look exactly the same except for coloring, the second of which is confirmed as female.
* VindicatedByHistory: This game was met with a BrokenBase when it was first released, mainly because not everyone was pleased with its choice to ditch turn-based battles and the reduced difficulty. Nowadays this has mostly died down, ''especially'' with the release of ''Sticker Star'' which caused many people to start to appreciate the ways in which ''Super'' still felt like a true ''Paper Mario'' game (particularly the humor, charm and story), and people who once loathed the game tend to generally view it as a different but enjoyable game with a great story, almost like a spinoff of a spinoff series.
* WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids: The story involves stopping the destruction of reality, one villain who is a WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds and another who is the ''Mario'' equivalent of ComicBook/TheJoker. There is also a surprising number of {{Disney Death}}s. It's all presented in tongue-in-cheek style.
* TheWoobie:
** Tippi/[[spoiler:Timpani]]. [[spoiler:When she was still human, she and Blumiere were StarCrossedLovers, complete with her being banished by Blumiere's cruel father from her home dimension. What's worse is that unknown to her, her love transformed Blumiere into Count Bleck to avenge her supposed death.]]
** Squirps. After spending most of Chapter 4 being a nuisance, upon reaching the center of the Whoa Zone, you learn that he's [[spoiler:the young prince of a long-dead kingdom, who was sealed in a hibernation capsule to ensure that the heroes would find their way to one of the Pure Hearts. Essentially, he forfeited his chance for a safe, easy, normal life -- all to prevent a threat that would have been hundreds of years after his time.]] And unlike [[spoiler:King Croacus, Luvbi, or Timpani and Blumiere, he doesn't receive an automatic ResetButton happy ending once the game is over. He's left entirely on his own in the depths of space, with only the hope that he'll be able to restore his kingdom someday.]] And he's ''a little kid'' through all of this.
