* AluminumChristmasTrees:
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcniO4-CVdM Lampshaded]] with a bootleg action figure of [[Wrestling/MickFoley Dude Love]].
** Some non-British fans are surprised to find out that Noseybonk was a real character from a British children's television show and not just some horror creature he devised.
** Same thing with the Game Child. Yes, it was indeed a real knockoff of the Game Boy, although Stuart's description in ''The Quest for the Game Child'' is significantly exaggerated, particularly in regard to the fact that it was supposedly radioactive. {{Lampshade|Hanging}}d during the actual review of the Game Child when he states, "Yes, we didn't make it up for the hilarious narrative purposes of the film. This is an actual ripoff that was sold to the shops."
** During the [[BlindIdiotTranslation hilarious "violin history"]] on the box of the Chinese electronic violin, he wonders what the child of a violin and a piano would be. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoZOkGtygjk Leonardo da Vinci's "Viola Organista" would probably have been a better answer than "accordion"]].
** In the ''Series/DoctorWho'' LCD Adventure Game review, he's baffled about a stage where the Wire, an energy being living in the television network is escaping in a car... except that in the [[Recap/DoctorWhoS28E7TheIdiotsLantern episode]] the level of the game is based on, the Wire does exactly that, being inside a 50s-style portable TV.
* BaseBreakingCharacter: Dan. Some people find his melodramatic reactions to food entertaining, others find his constant retching and half-hearted attempts to be funny as irritating and capable of driving them away from the video.
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment:
** In his Huge Screen v.2 review, an advert comes on for "Breakfast Mess", [[HypocriticalHumor despite having said that his videos don't use advert breaks.]]
** The [[spoiler:Easter Bunny JumpScare]] from around halfway through his Easter Tat review.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: The Godmonster of Indian Flats seems to be very popular, as he's had to address why there haven't been more of him. It's because he was scarcely in one movie. He hopes to grow a guinea pig into a new one.
** Quincy, the Caterpillar who sings obscure [[Music/TheBeatles Beatles]] songs, is also pretty popular.
** And there's the Excellent Darkhorse himself, Chef Excellence.
** The "grass masks" from the Playmobil Advent Calender are also popular, in part to being {{surprisingly creepy|Moment}}.
** '''THE GOOSE''', of course.
* FanNickname:
** "Bort Sompson" for the nightmare-inducing Not Bart Simpson from the Huge Screen V2 review.
** He also comes up with nicknames for all the ''Series/DoctorWho'' villains during his review of the ''Doctor Who'' LCD Adventure Game.
* FriendlyFandoms: With LetsPlay/NerdCubed, due to them being good friends in real life and their collab on the Advent Calendar in 2015 and every subsequent year.
* HarsherInHindsight:
** A remark he makes in [[https://youtu.be/DHCid-GypGIhis 2013 Easter video]] regarding a set of inedible decorative Easter Eggs that look almost identical to Cadbury chocolate eggs became this when [[http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-32162409 the decorations were pulled from shelves out of fear of them being a choking hazard]].
** In his [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVBDo0t_0dA 45-Year Old Cresta Pineapple Drink]] video, him talking about the Corona fizzy milk and how the "Corona Man" would come around and deliver it is now more awkward in light of the coronavirus epidemic.
** In the Poundland Sandwich Roundup video, Barry asks Stuart if he thinks real [[Film/BackToTheFuturePartII hoverboards]] will ever exist. Stuart's response is "I think society might have collapsed before that happens. I'd say we've got about three weeks at this rate." ''Exactly'' three weeks later, the first [[UsefulNotes/COVID19Pandemic COVID-19]] case outside of China was discovered (though the disease wasn't known about at the time), and four days after that, the virus was announced to the world and [[NothingIsTheSameAnymore nothing has been the same since]]. In the very same video, Stuart laughs while eating a sandwich and briefly chokes but immediately resolves it with a cough... directly into his hands, which he later uses to handle the sandwich packages. Not a very egregious example, but a clear signifier of the pre-COVID era that the video was filmed in.
** In his "Weird Eighties Action Figures" video from 2011, he jokingly says one of [[Series/MorkAndMindy Mork's]] catchphrases is "Kill me now before I make ''Film/BicentennialMan'' and ''Film/PatchAdams''." which at the time was just a snarky TakeThat towards those films but is now in bad taste after Creator/RobinWilliams committed suicide in 2014.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** A RunningGag which appears when he mentions [[Franchise/StreetFighter Street]] [[PopStation Overlord]] is saying that, "Two men pull their arms and legs off and throw them at each other". Then ''VideoGame/MortalKombat9'' came out, and one of the challenges in the challenge towers has you doing exactly that. It's also a valid and somewhat common tactic used in ''{{VideoGame/Toribash}}''.
** In the review of ''VideoGame/PacMan: The Board Game'', Ashen points out how to deposit the pellets into the player's bins by saying "Now you have to empty your balls into your bucket." [[Webcomic/{{Homestuck}} So Ashen is a troll?]]
** At the end of the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Ly6X-BrKHEE recording microscopes]] review, Ashens promptly set a fake ''Franchise/MyLittlePony'' on fire, laughing maniacally before sighing [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything *hats*]] at the end, and shortly after proclaiming "[[TakeThat Pyromania is Magic!]]". Cue two months later, in June 2012, when the VideoGame/TeamFortress2 [[http://www.teamfortress.com/pyromania/ Pyromania]] [[http://www.teamfortress.com/pyromania/pyroland/ update]] was announced.
** [[https://youtu.be/IAfx6UIpGLI There are no advertisement breaks.]] [[Platform/BlipTV This is the Internet.]][[labelnote:*]]And then Platform/YouTube itself implemented advert breaks.[[/labelnote]]
** In his ''VideoGame/HumanKillingMachine'' review, he declares developer Tiertex's ultimate fate of producing mobile games as "a fitting punishment." A fair comment in 2008 - nowadays, mobile games make more money than the console and PC markets combined.
** Also in the review of ''Human Killing Machine'', he takes a look at each fighter, pointing out how racially stereotypical and ridiculous they all are. Jump to 2015 and Capcom announces Arabian character Rashid for ''Street Fighter V'', who bares more than a slight resemblance to Sagen, HKM's penultimate opponent. Of course, HKM is nothing more than a reskinned home port of the original ''Street Fighter!''
** His comment of Stay Fresh Cheese Bags sounding like an obnoxious 80's mascot character's sigh-off catch phrase ("Stay fresh, cheesebags!") got a little funnier when "Stay Fresh" became the sign-off catch phrase of the newscaster/pop idol duo in the first ''VideoGame/Splatoon1'' - largely because of the late-80's-to-mid-90's vibe the game gives off with its visual design.
** His Game Child review has two. Either it's a [[WebVideo/AshensAndTheQuestForTheGameChild deadly weapon]] that can bring upon the end of mankind or a [[WesternAnimation/TheAmazingWorldOfGumball sentient knockoff]] bent on destroying the Earth.
** In "Bootleg Star Wars Figures: The Fake Menace", Ashens comments how cheerful the Bootleg Palpatine Figure looks, with him waving Hello to his Grandchildren. Three years later, [[Film/TheRiseOfSkywalker we learn that Palpatine does indeed have Grandchildren (namely Rey)]]!
** One of the [[https://youtu.be/2LdaKQvasKQ bootleg toys]] he reviewed featured a spaceship with ''WesternAnimation/ShaunTheSheep'' decals. Flash forward 6 years later, and we get ''A WesternAnimation/ShaunTheSheep Movie: Farmageddon'', which is about spaceships.
** While reviewing some fake LEGO sets, Stuart opens up a soccer themed one which has figurines that ''don't even have faces'' but just indentations on where their faces would be[[note]](in which he comments it's "attack of the bloody [[Series/DoctorWho Autons]]!")[[/note]], and comments that the press member has a camera that "presumably steals people's souls, because it looks like he fucking needs one!" [[VideoGame/{{Inscryption}} Hopefully they don't get inscribed on cards.]]
** Stuart's take on ''Toys/PollyPocket'''s Cutants, without delving into too much [[NightmareFuel/StuartAshen nightmare fuel]], has Polly as a "comic book villain" who repurposes animals as various inanimate object hybrids, may remind ''WesternAnimation/TheOwlHouse'' fans of [[Characters/TheOwlHouseTheCollector a certain playful character in it]].[[note]]Though it could be said that at least Polly's ''nicer'' than the Collector, seeing as those hybrids are at least able to move around, unlike the Collector's toys.[[/note]]
** In one of the ''Ideas Men'' videos, Stuart and Darren (or their unnamed characters, to be exact) are having a discussion about Bluetooth, with Darren being dismayed at his coffee cup not having Bluetooth connectivity. Fast-forward to nearly a decade later when he got his wish with products like [[https://eu.ember.com/products/ember-mug-2?variant=41371672936600 the Ember mug]].
* HoYay:
** Several exchanges with Guru Larry about the night/day mechanic of ''VideoGame/{{Minecraft}}'':
--> Larry: It's getting dark, shall we go to bed first?
--> Stuart: *Laughs* Don't you buy me dinner first?
** At the beginning of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycWd7bK_XLc Nineties Star Wars Figures Showcase]]:
--->'''Stuart:''' It's the Nineties again.\
'''Alec:''' Yeahhh.\
'''Stuart:''' Did you get the call? Did you get the old calendars out?\
'''Alec:''' I did indeed, I'm currently dressed as [[Music/SpiceGirls Scary Spice]], so...\
'''Stuart:''' I thought that was just for me... I'm a bit disappointed now.
* LessDisturbingInContext: "Oh, god! It's spraying everywhere! The doctor said I wouldn't have that problem any more!" [[spoiler: He's referring to a tube of CD cleaning fluid.]]
* MemeticMutation:
** [[http://youtu.be/8asnz3E4n4o?t=6m12s AN EXCELLENT X]] (from Chef Excellence Stay Fresh bags, which feature a stock photo of a chef with the caption "Chef Excellence" 'An excellent product'). [[http://excellent.mezgr.de/ Now you can make your own!]] [[note]]Put whatever you want in the box in the top right corner[[/note]]
** "Or something."
** The degree to which he's become memetic becomes very clear in his Not 100th Video Contest showcases.
** The '''''FUCKING INFLATABLE FUCKING CROWN'''''!
*** Eventually, [=LootCrate=] themselves got in on the act by sending him a box full of inflatable crowns, along with a troll face.
** The toy violin that plays "the fucking theme to ''Angry Birds''."
* NauseaFuel:
** [[http://youtu.be/w6Nyl8Q3590?t=6m38s The "Specimen Tube" from the Halloween Sweets Special.]][[note]]Though one could argue that was half of the point, being a Halloween confectionery item and all. Not an excuse, but points for accuracy?[[/note]]
** The microwavable pizza snack gets hyped up as this as well. As Stuart himself says, "[[SincerityMode NOT RECOMMENDED]]".
** He proclaims the German creme egg-lookalikes to be the most disgusting Poundland food yet, and then whilst wondering what was going on (as he'd expected them to at least be OK because even they couldn't screw up something that simple), he notices a maggot lying on one of them. [[spoiler:It turns out to be a fake planted there by a friend, but still.]]
** Two words: [[https://youtu.be/zpIVAzPdQMo&feature=related Instant Cupcake.]]
** Three more words: [[https://youtu.be/ImZ5tums4zs&feature=g-all-u thousand-year egg]]. According to him, it is by far the worst thing he's ever tasted (he describes the taste as "Every synapse in your brain screaming that what you just put in your mouth should not be in your mouth"). [[ForeignQueasine And it looks it.]] [[spoiler: In a later video, he, rather unsurprisingly, revealed that it was rotten even by thousand-year egg standards.]]
** [[https://youtu.be/J2UsLamksB4 Bean Boozled Jelly Beans]]. In this case, the product was intentionally made as disgusting as possible. Flavours include vomit, rotten egg, skunk spray and canned dog food. Dan actually vomits due to how disgusting they are, and at the end, [[spoiler:the spitoon they used is shown on-camera.]]
** The [[https://youtu.be/rVza_AnhQ3E whole chicken in a can]] is a serious contender for the most disgusting food (especially visually) that Ashen's ever had on his channel. The meat sloughs off the bone almost instantaneously, and combined with the bright yellow preservatives, the result looks as if the chicken had decayed in the can.
--->'''Stuart''': Any vegetarians in the house? What's that? All of you now?
** [[https://youtu.be/5eJiATvy7X4 The cake made with the 25 year old microwave cake mix]] looks like "the bottom of a cat's litter tray" and is frosted with "the devil's cum".
** [[https://youtu.be/dhJvjWaz3hg The 20-year-old can of baby food]] Stuart and Barry Lewis try probably eclipses the cake and the chicken in terms of sheer nastyness. It had a top layer of white liquid and had congealed into a solid lump by the time they opened the tin.
** And then there was the [[https://youtu.be/fI9-CgA5Rlg canned scorpion]] and the [[https://youtu.be/wdeqjaHiMkE canned tarantula.]]
** [[https://youtu.be/UJDprMaEm7A Ashens & Dan eat dead insects]]. Nothing more than needs to be said.
** The [[https://youtu.be/OepMwUZCQZc circa-1836 jar of olives.]] Quite literally the oldest, most rotten food item Ashens has ever shown.
** The sugar bunnies from the [[https://youtu.be/_B4xETR65rM 2016 Easter special]]. At first it just looks like the food colouring's causing some strange spots to appear, but it turns out they (or at least, one of the ones Ashens had) have actual mold growing on them.
** A double treat of [[https://youtu.be/jJMPSmZJ5wY 30 year old Oxtail Soup and a similarly aged can of Diet Coke]]. The Oxtail was, at this point, fairly standard (disgusting, and the powder had solidified). The Diet Coke, however, provoked an extreme reaction from Stuart to the point of a VomitDiscretionShot and he labeled it as possibly the worst thing he's ever tasted; unlike even the 20 year old baby food above, there was no hint of what it once was. Not just "off-tasting cola", but ''pure, undiluted rot''.
** This is, in fact, the very reason he initially refused to open a can of surströmming, no matter how many times he's sent the stuff. But eventually, as a goal for the crowdfunding campaign for his second movie, he (and Barry) [[https://youtu.be/hIVTIwvJttg finally tried surströmming]]. Suffice to say the smell alone lived up to this trope.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSuUnuohFwY The 50-year-old canned ox tongue.]] It looks particularly nauseating, having been tinned in some milky substance, and Stuart takes care to show the tongue close-up to the camera to show off the visible taste buds and such.
** The [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVBDo0t_0dA 45 Year Old Cresta Pineapple drink]]. Looked like fermented urine, had stuff floating in it and it smelled of sewage. Stuart's reaction to its taste was also quite something; he's had bad reactions to food before but nothing has made him essentially '''panic''' like that.
** The [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JqUGH0_Lf8 Hangrees]] toys. They wouldn't be ''too'' if it weren't for the [[Franchise/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles Donatello]] CaptainErsatz having ''disturbing realistic'' diarrhoea and [[VideoGame/FiveNightsAtFreddys Freddy Fazbear]] Ersatz having slime that resembles vicera, which, depending on your interpretation, can be anal prolapse (like Stuart himself), placenta (like the majority of commenters), or a ''liquefied child'' (other commenters, taking FNAF lore into account). And at the end [[spoiler:Stuart drapes Not!Freddy's slime over Not!Donatello's face.]]
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSYBZE4ndx0 This bottle of Diet Pepsi]], which was left abandoned and exposed in the elements for several years, and was covered in pigeon poop (which Stuart had to clean). The taste was described as [[{{Understatement}} "not very nice"]].
** [[https://youtube.com/watch?v=73Y7qjM--zo The 20-year-old Spider-Man cake]]. Already smelling horrific and falling apart due to age, the icing had turned unusually hard, to say nothing of the cake itself. The pastry had decomposed horribly, and the buttercream had left an odd dusty substance behind. And the edible figurine of Spidey himself had essentially turned to stone, being almost completely immune to being cut. [[KnowWhenToFoldEm Stuart wisely decides to not even taste it]].
* NightmareRetardant: [[https://youtu.be/pemR-dApMV0 The 16mm film's]] graininess and lack of sound makes it seem creepy, but paper signs that he encounters says that four new videos will be posted each month in the near future. [[spoiler:Subverted at the end, when [[NightmareFuel Noseybonk makes a loud and unwelcome reappearance]].]]
* OnceOriginalNowCommon: Although his channel remains popular, this trope still applies to an extent. He’s one of the oldest [=YouTubers=] still active on the site (his first video was uploaded in February 2006) - given that this era of [=YouTube=] was generally marked with the likes of WebVideo/{{Fred}}, WebVideo/{{Smosh}}, and WebVideo/TheNostalgiaCritic, who generally had a loud, willingly obnoxious style of comedy that (intentionally or not) appealed largely to children, Ashens stood out for his super-dry humor and laid back style that generally skewed towards an older audience. Nowadays, while kid-oriented, obnoxious comedy is still popular on the platform, the style of dry humor that made Ashens unique has become much more common since.
* ReplacementScrappy: Max Hoffman[[note]]Who is fake, in case you're wondering[[/note]], who replaced Chef Excellence on the "Stay Fresh x Bags".
* SugarWiki/SweetDreamsFuel: A lot of viewers mention in the comments how soothing Ashen's voice is, despite his snarkiness and the occasional disgusting foodstuffs.
* WhatDoYouMeanItsNotForKids: His two early ''Magic Meadow'' videos are animated cartoons similar in style to the 1970s British children's cartoon series ''WesternAnimation/{{Bod}}''. The first one ends in a gruesome head injury and a brain damaged character. The second ends in the violent murder of another cartoon character by Ashens for stealing Ashen's credit card and using it to buy a MailOrderBride.
* TheWoobie:
** Stuart, when he was turned into a bread oven in the Stock Clearance Special.
** The cheap, borderline demonic, Poundland puppy toy. It starts out creepy and annoying, but Ashen's brutal NeckSnap activates the "yap" squeaker in its neck, making it sound like it's ''yelping in pain'' as it dies. Somewhat negated by its still-lit eyes after death, though.
** In similar case, the dancing Jar Jar Binks. The way it falls at some points makes hime look like ''he's trying to shield himself from the hammer blows.''
** The beady-eyed, stringy-haired treetop angel from the 2013 Christmas special. Stuart felt so bad for her, he even went to the trouble of making a short, sad film of her looking off into the distance against a grey sky. [[https://youtu.be/0BJVfRRDhIc A fan on YouTube]] gave the poor girl a makeover, and the results are breathtaking.
