* SugarWiki/HeReallyCanAct: {{Music/Common}} has a [[OneSceneWonder fairly brief appearance]] but in that short amount of screentime he is absolutely ''[[NightmareFuel terrifying]]''.
* HilariousInHindsight: One of the Korean gangsters that Ludlow insults goes on to play Jim Morita in ''Film/CaptainAmericaTheFirstAvenger'', while [[Creator/ChrisEvans Cap himself]] is Ludlow's new partner.
** So that's how [[Film/JohnWickChapter2 John Wick and Cassian]] first met, huh?
** Fans of Series/NineOneOne will also be surprised to see Chewy as one of Korean gangsters that Tom meets (and later kills).
* MagnificentBastard: Captain James Biggs is the scheming head of InternalAffairs in the Los Angeles Police Department who feels slighted by Captain Wander, his former partner, being promoted ahead of him. At the behest of the upper echelons of the police force, who worry that Wander has become too powerful, Biggs provides Detective Ludlow with clues about the corruption within his unit, calculating that he will do whatever it takes to dismantle it. At the end, with Ludlow as the SoleSurvivor and many people having gotten caught in the crossfire, Biggs reveals the truth to Ludlow while admitting that he and the men he works for have some use for his ruthless CowboyCop tactics.
* MoralEventHorizon: [[spoiler:Captain Wander]] crosses this when he reveals his true colors, coldly ordering the deaths of both Washington's widow and Ludlow himself.
* SpiritualAdaptation: This film is probably the closest anyone will ever come to making a decent ''VideoGame/{{Max Payne}}'' adaptation, especially considered the official but [[VideoGameMoviesSuck much maligned]] film adaptation that came out [[Film/MaxPayne the same year]].
* TearJerker: The death of [[spoiler: Diskant, the only unambiguously decent cop in the film, who dies a lengthy, painful death after being shot in the throat]]. Ludlow himself looks like he barely holds back tears witnessing it.
* TooBleakStoppedCaring: Given the gritty nature of the film, it can be hard to root for the cops themselves, up to and including Ludlow and Biggs. [[spoiler: Washington and especially Diskant are two of the more moral police officers, and both end up dead before the end of the movie. The latter in particular gets an especially drawn-out death with Ludlow unable to save him in time.]]
