Context YMMV / Spinnerette

Go To

* {{Adorkable}}: Spinnerette is a biology major and a klutz, so this trope shouldn't be surprising.
* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation:
** Dr. Universe: evil MadScientist, or victim of the government?
** Col. Glass: textbook clinical psychopath? Or victim of the North Korean government, driven insane by experimentation to the point of being pathologically addicted to killing? His sole PetTheDog moment has left his character surprisingly hard to figure out.
* AngstWhatAngst: In Issue 31, Heather seems to handle [[spoiler:having to fight and hospitalize her mother, who was possessed by a Wendigo]] without much grief.
* {{Anvilicious}}:
** Issue 25 has a pro-choice moral clumsily inserted into it, equating superhero rights with women's rights.
** The Windigo arc ''really'' hammers in the LGBT acceptance message concerning Heather's mother. This got a bit criticized since it was hard to tell if it was the Windigo in her talking or her true feelings (nor the fact that Heather never ''considered'' the former). As well as being concluded rather awkwardly (as in offscreen with father relying what her mother said after visiting her in the hospital rather than the Heather talking to her directly after the Windigo was purged from her body) to really be satisfying. Considering this was during Christmas, it likewise flew in the face of the holiday spirit.
* ArcFatigue: Colonel Glass. Adding in breaks for Krow's convention appearances and a side-arc about Minerva's origins, it took ''over a year'' to finish the story arc.
* BrokenBase:
** Was Delta a sociopath or merely a pervy teenager who just needs to be set straight? Did his dreamhopping constitute MindRape or is that an exaggeration?
** The webcomic took a hell of a turn around issue 6 to 8, with a lot of drama and characters suddenly becoming super complex and the story showing more serious elements. Mecha Maid, for example, started off simple, but was then shown to be terminally ill, [[spoiler:in love with Heather]], and seeking revenge against a supervillain that killed her parents. Depending on who you ask, this change is either the best or the worst thing that ever happened.
** There have been heated arguments in the Comment Section over whether Sarah Megan Nicole should or can be held criminally responsible for the actions she committed under the influence of the drugs she was taking. The WRITER, at least, seems to have made it clear she isn't, as she's treated as basically nice in her reappearance, and a villain only due to foolishness, not malice.
* TheChrisCarterEffect: An inevitable consequence of it being written like a comic book is that, like most comic books, it has no signs of an ending or satisfying conclusion down the line.
* CrossesTheLineTwice: The whole of Issue 11. An aged Nazi sorcerer and his Aryan supersoldier protégé hire Dr. Universe to clone Adolf Hitler, and gets into a fight with the voodoo-wielding great-great-granddaughter of Robert E. Lee (who wants Lee cloned) over who has rights to a pile of stem cells ''harvested from disposed-of foreskins'' to get their clone made first, both sides tossing out racist rhetoric against everyone not-white and then insulting each other, while Universe and Greta look on and snark about the idiocy of racists. Ultimately neither racist gets the stem cells, which are used to clone Richard Nixon and Spiro Agnew.
* DieForOurShip: Darien was given this treatment by Spinnerette/Mecha-Maid shippers before Heather and Mecha Maid hooked up. Despite not having appeared since, he still gets shots taken at him from time to time.
* DracoInLeatherPants: Dr. Universe and Greta Gravity are quickly becoming this to the fanbase. Their DarkAndTroubledPast seems to justify nearly everything they do in the eyes of some fans.
* HarsherInHindsight: The latest arc may seem silly, what with a woman being drugged by her priest into "curing her homosexuality," but on August 9, 2016, a priest in Orlando, Florida was arrested for serving tea laced with psychedelics to his congregation.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** Greta Gravity is German-Brazilian. In a 2012 comic, she mentions looking forward to the 2014 [[UsefulNotes/TheWorldCup World Cup]]. Come the [[CurbStompBattle real life World Cup...]]
** The titular character is [[SpiderManSendUp an obvious pastiche of Spider-Man]]. In 2016, Marvel produced ''ComicBook/TheAmazingSpiderManRenewYourVows'', a alternate reality story in which Spider-Man's wife becomes a spider superheroine named Spinnerette. This led to them getting mixed up by an artist hired by Marvel to do a variant cover featuring various Spider characters.
* IronWoobie: Marilyn Seong aka Mecha Maid. She's bound to a wheelchair when outside her armor and has only a few years left to live, but spends her time trying to make the world a better place for everyone else.
* LesYay:
** Evil Spinnerette/Alexis kisses a girl that is taunting her and makes up some fake story about how a Drider's kiss creates a magical bond of romance. One week later, the girl practically throws herself at Alexis. Alexis admits to Heather that she was probably a closet lesbian her entire life and now has an excuse to come out. [[spoiler:It's all part of Evil Spinnerette's cunning plan to fool Heather into helping her with her latest drider-creation ritual]].
** Alexis gives Heather [[CleanPrettyReliable mouth-to-mouth]] and has the girl from earlier film it.
** 2010 Spinnerette and Silver Age Spinnerette have a lot of subtext. The former [[RescueRomance risks her life to save the latter]] from being lost in time and space, and when they have to part ways, Silver Age Spinnerette [[PleaseDontLeaveMe even pleads for 2010 Spinnerette to come back to her universe]].
* LGBTFanbase: Since Heather is revealed to be a lesbian fairly early, it got a lot of homosexuals on board pretty quickly, especially as Marilyn and her's relationship has blossomed over the run.
* MemeticMutation: When Katt throws a car at Dr Universe, take a look at the car's license plate. [[http://www.spinnyverse.com/comic/06-06-2011 The strip in question]]. [[spoiler:YS-SRUS=[[Film/TheDarkKnight Why so serious?]]]]
* MoralEventHorizon: "Adastraea" officially crosses it when she throws the lid of a stem cell container to send Dr. Singh falling over three stories presumably to his death, and pats herself on the back for it, only regretting that she didn't make him suffer more, for actually having the gall to restore her ability to walk, and then wants "justice" against Mecha-Maid because the latter was actually hoping for a cure for her condition. All because she assumes Dr. Singh is responsible for her ALS in the first place.
* {{Narm}}:
** The strip that shows why Tiger decided to pursue superheroing is either really sad or too melodramatic. Hey, "Vary" is the key word here.
** After [[spoiler:Mecha Maid gets electrocuted and can't breathe, she tells Heather to take her to the "superhero hospital".]] It's a serious moment, but the way it was worded just made it seem silly.
** When Marilyn lets out her [[spoiler:AnguishedDeclarationOfLove for Heather]], it's meant to be a huge DramaBomb... but the sight of Heather's nipples poking through her suit can kind of deflate it.
** A lot of character and plot drama in general gets ruined by the gratuitous {{Fanservice}} and the heroes' silliness. With names like "{{Mecha}} Maid", it's hard to take anything they say seriously.
* RomanticPlotTumor: To an extent, the Mecha Maid plot becomes this... but only AFTER she and Spinerette get together! Generally, most of the issues post-Glass have focused on Spinerette's relationship with Mecha Maid, with most of the supervillain fights tied into this. Even the CrisisCrossover had this be a big deal.
* SeasonalRot: Some controversial changes to the characters, the poorly handled political themes, and the increasing focus on Spinerette and Mecha Maid's relationship has put off a lot of fans.
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: Some feel that [[spoiler:Minerva being turned human has done this to her, as well as made her less unique. Doubly so as she actually turns smaller (less than a head taller than Heather) and less strong and muscular in human form.]]
* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: Tiger's Canadian ex-wife comes off as selfish and unreasonable when she left and divorced Tiger for being a superhero. It's no wonder he has an irrational prejudice against Canadians.
* ViewerGenderConfusion: Green Gable and Katt o' Nine Tails, WholesomeCrossdresser and {{Bifauxnen}}, respectively.
* WheelchairWoobie: Mecha Maid, outside her armor, due to being an orphan twice over and suffering from [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amyotrophic_lateral_sclerosis ALS]], meaning she's got only a few years left to live.
