* AmericansHateTingle: Due to the ''Metal Heroes'' franchise being brought over ''chaotically'' out of order (''Juspion'', ''Sharivan'', ''Shaider'' and THEN ''Gavan''), Brazilians at the time thought this series was a knockoff of their beloved ''Juspion''. The dub was infamously bad and was aired out of order. Rede Globo made little advertising for the series, and it was a tv channel whose audience at the time didn't care much for toku shows which were traditionally aired on Rede Manchete.
* AntiClimaxBoss: Much drama is made in episode 14 out of Gavan's failure to defeat the fused monster in the previous episode. However, the final battle against the villain, who should be nine times stronger than a normal one in the Makuu dimension, follows the same usual routine. Later battles do a better job of selling the threat level of the tougher double monsters.
* ArcFatigue: We first learn of the torture Voicer is suffering from under the claws of the Makuu in episode 11, but the story doesn't give this the urgency it deserves at all, with only sporadic reminders of his fate and Gavan's grief over it until the two reunite on the next-to-last episode, 43. [[spoiler:It's no wonder Voicer ultimately dies after all that holdup.]]
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic:
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfjuSxTkf90 "Uchuu Keiji Gavan"]]. About as hot-blooded a song as you can have for a Toku show. What makes this more awesome is the lyrics, it's very rare to have a hot-blooded song to have such encouraging lyrics:
--->''Youth, what is youth?? It means to never look back!''\
''What is love?? It means to never stop!!''\
''Gavan! Say good bye to tears, Gavan!''\
''Say hello to courage, Space Sheriff Gavan!!''
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtmCGiJmmbc&feature=related The Laser Blade theme.]] Michiaki Watanabe knocked it out of the park the first time, making a theme that's so good it's been [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzDSsMw4eww reused several times in a handful of shows]].
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdF_5hjHJtc Chase! Gavan]] Perfect mix for the Jouchaku sequence.
** Speaking of said sequence, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qL1Sc6dL4ks Jouchaku seyo! Gavan]], possibly the coolest song in Gavan's soundtrack. Akira Kushida is absolutely ''killing it'' in this piece!
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkOPrYpiVqg Kagayaku Yuja Dolgiran]] Badass and Disco never went together so well.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpqHoZOkZfs Hoshizora no Message]] After all the GAR and Badassery, soothing and refreshing.
** The [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRYmmAlmytE music box]] [[SimpleScoreOfSadness version]] of Aoi Chikyuu wa Haha no Hoshi really helps to make Gavan and Voicer's reunion all the more poignant.
* FridgeHorror: Unlike other tokusatsu monsters of the week created by Toei, the Space Sheriff trilogy's monsters of the week are outlandishly powerful in context with a rather horrific tone. Most of them never talk or emote, but still have human level intellect, much like a serial killer, and in addition to at least one melee weapon their standard powers include size changing, teleportation, invisibility, some bodily weapon, and shape shifting. Add ReligiousHorror for more atmospheric effect.
* SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoments: When Gavan finally finds his father Voicer and raises his family picture locket, with both men just gazing at each other in silence for a whole minute, barely holding back tears, before Voicer holds Gavan's hand and acknowledges him.
* MemeticMutation:
** In Indonesia, "As big as Gaban" (Indonesian dubbed name for Gavan, or in Bahasa Indonesia, "Segede Gaban") is a popular phrase for talking about huge things. For example, "Eng: Your Bag is as huge as Gavan. Indo: Tas kamu segede gaban). [[note]]This is because there used to be a big statue of Gavan at Jakarta's theme park, Dufan. Though sadly the statue no longer exists, the phrase still sticks around.[[/note]]
** Let's just say it's like what Char is to Japan, thought not as big.
** In UsefulNotes/{{Thailand}}, the term ''Makuu Space'' is commonly used by media such as newspapers when something bad is going to happen.
* {{Narm}}:
** When Retsu is unmasked in episode 18, the BEM monster asks in disbelief "Aren't you Lord Urashima?", and Retsu replies with "Nope!". In the Brazilian dub, the monster instead goes "How could I have been such an idiot?!" and [[DubNameChange "Takeshi"]] replies, in a very smug tone, "Because you ''are'' an idiot!". It couldn't possibly [[HongKongDub mismatch the actor's mouth movements any further]]!
** In episode 34, just before Makuu Space is activated Gavan gets the villain stuck on a tight spot, turns the opposite way and starts doing ''backwards punches on the guy's butt''. It looks positively ridiculous.
** When Gavan starts riding on Gavion in the latter half of the series, what we see is an obvious figure of him standing on a toy car, just like with Doru. Thing is, at one point we see Gavan -- the actual actor -- from behind just motionlessly holding his right fist foward the whole time like that can sell the effect any better.
* RetroactiveRecognition: Western newcomers to tokusatsu may be surprised to find that [[Film/KillBill Hattori Hanzo's mouthy assistant]] is a popular superhero in his homeland. [[Series/BattleFeverJ Thrice]] [[Series/DenshiSentaiDenziman over]], actually.
* SpecialEffectFailure:
** Every time we saw a shot of Doru in combat with Gavan standing on its head, it's pretty obvious that it's just an action figure of Gavan standing there motionless. Another example of obvious figurines is when the victims in an early episode are miniaturized and put inside bottles.
** Not to mention the fact that it was always the exact same few stock shots of Doru, somehow making a cybernetic space dragon boring to watch. Occasionally they shook things up by changing the order, but it's hard not to ask what ever happened to the more varied Doru scenes from early episodes such as him actually fighting kaiju up close and lifting a ship into outer space.
** When Gavan first arrives on Earth, his head is briefly covered by the background as he runs towards the camera.
** Many scenes featuring Gavan performing [[InASingleBound incredibly high leaps]] are simply a recording of him jumping down played in reverse. This can appear very unnatural depending of the actor's posture while jumping. There are also similar scenes where Gavan and an antagonist are seen awkwardly rolling upwards on a slope while grappling each other.
** When vehicles crash against a wall and explode, the effect used is very unconvincing. We can see them braking to a stop and blinking out of view as explosives are detonated just ahead of them.
** In episode 38, Gavan stops a speeding truck with his bare hands... except we clearly see the vehicle slow down and stop on its own before the hero pushes it.
** When characters are BlownAcrossTheRoom by attacks, this is portrayed as repeated quick cuts of them falling backwards into the distance. This one effect [[NarmCharm actually looks rather stylish]].
** Whenever Gavan is dragged into Makuu Space and calls for Cyberian, he starts stumbling backwards while shaking his arms to act like he's being pulled away, and it is particularly silly when instead of doing that he [[SpinningOutOfHere spins away]] with both arms raised.
** Episode 2 makes it very obvious that [[https://twitter.com/tokugifs/status/1394818231286829056 Dai Nippon Maru's boosters are actually lights thanks to the reflections]].
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: Hunter Killer is a former space sheriff who betrayed Voicer, but he's only ever seen standing around looking menacing with his corny makeup rather than actually fighting Gavan. It takes most of the series for him to do anything significant, and that is sabotaging warriors who are better than him. Hunter Killer is tossed into outer space for that betrayal and dies several episodes later. Annoyingly enough, his replacement San Dorva is built up to be a bigger threat but is really more of the same to the point Don Horror actually berates him for slacking off and relying on the double monsters to do his job.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: In episode 38, the Sun Sword is revealed to be a living blade of justice that starts flying around to slash San Dorva. Gavan does NOT dual-wield it with his Laser Sword in the following fight scene, and neither does it do anything until Gavan brings it back from the Makuu Space.
* {{Woolseyism}}: Regarding the Brazilian dub:
** They notably change the "Gavan Dynamic!" shout to the hero yelling [[{{Battlecry}} "Gavan will win!!"]] at the top of his lungs. After the first few episodes, the narration about Makuu Space tripling the power of monsters is also replaced by one about the Makuu and Gavan being equally determined warriors on a vicious fight for the fate of the world, and it is worded differently every time.
** Rather then calling out "Mechanical Space-Beast Dol", Gavan says "I need help, Dol[[SpellMyNameWithAnS u]]!", which sounds rather catchy.
