* BrokenBase: In the past, there was a basketball debate in various fanbase forums about Sakuragi's slam dunk in the Shohoku vs. Shoyo match. Was it an offensive foul by Sakuragi and that he deserved to be sent off? Was it a normal goal that should be counted, and no one actually committed a foul? Or was it actually a defensive foul by Hanagata, which means Sakuragi's goal should be counted and that Shohoku should've got a free throw as well. In-Universe, Fujima was shown yelling an order to Hanagata to stop the clock by fouling Sakuragi, an order which was obeyed without question by Shoyo's tall center.
* CommonKnowledge: A piece of trivia commonly thrown around in Latin American circles, both online and off, is that Sakuragi is based on a real Japanese basketball player; some people even claim the show is loosely biographical.
* DieForOurShip: Poor Haruko. And sometimes, poor Sendoh. But MUCH less, fandom says.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: Lampshaded. Uekasa believes he's one, but he's probably the least popular of the Ryonan players.
* Fanon: No, it's never stated that Mitsui has to repeat his senior year at any point in the manga. Fans commonly misinterpret the last chapter (Akagi and Kogure quit the team to study for exams while Mitsui stays and feels "lonesome") as meaning Mitsui having to stay at Shohoku for another year. In 10 Days Later it's revealed he's staying for the Winter Tournament (which takes place during the second semester of the school year) so that he can possibly get a scholarship to a university instead. Although it is possible Mitsui later repeats senior year, it's not set in stone in the canon itself.
* FoeYayShipping: Sakuragi, Rukawa and Sendoh are popularly shipped together in various combinations, despite that Sakuragi and Rukawa are very unfriendly rivals even while being teammates, and Sendoh is a recurring opponent in an opposing team.
* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff:
** Beloved by both of the Spanish-speaking fandoms, though the Latin-American one is more vocal.
** This show is notably popular in the Philippines as well, possibly because of basketball's popularity in that country. Many people still watch it even decades after, thanks to the several reruns of the anime in the country's biggest television networks. It is a favorite even among usually non-anime-watching demographics and the basketball community in general, to the point where a famous Filipino basketball player named Marc Pingris has been nicknamed "Sakuragi" due to his rebound skills.
** Very popular in South Korea, to the point where certain lines have been meme-fied.
* HarsherInHindsight: The one-shot prequel, Piercings (which was published two years after the series ended), milks these tropes for all they're worth.
** In one of the earlier chapters of Slam Dunk, Miyagi beats a delinquent half to death for slapping Ayako, declaring that no one should ever hit a girl. When he was eleven he slapped her for littering, got slapped back and bitten by her, and only reacted negatively when she hurt her leg quite badly.
** At the end of the one-shot, Ayako tells him to keep a picture of her on his desk so he can see her everyday; he thinks this is an absurd idea. Five years later, he not only keeps a picture of her on his desk but talks to it every morning.
** In a more meta-example, Creator/KiyoyukiYanada's role as Takenori Akagi is pretty hilarious if one takes into account he dubbed Patrick Ewing, the player whose Akagi is based of, in the Japanese dub of Film/SpaceJam.
** Even more hilariously with Kaede Rukawa who wants to go to America to hone his skills as a basketball player much to Coach Anzai's disappointment. It seems to him that he went to America minus the basketball skills in a more hilarious way.
* HilariousInHindsight: Takenori Akagi is voiced in Japanese by Creator/KiyoyukiYanada, who later dubbed Patrick Ewing, the model for Akagi, in the Japanese dub of Film/SpaceJam.
* MemeticMutation: For Filipino viewers, it's Kogure's week long three point shot.
* SelfFanservice: Many of the male characters are attractive anyway, though female fans draw them as generic pretty boys from time to time.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: Just before the nationals story arc, the various teams that will be playing are introduced, featuring the top players and even offering a much stronger rival for Sakuragi. spoiler:And so it was a shock to many fans that it turned out that Shohuku lasts for only three games, with the second one being the GrandFinale and the third (where Shohoku lost) being only mentioned right before the epilogue.
* TheWoobie:
** Yasuda's shy and good-natured which naturally means he's pushed around in a team full of alpha males.
** Uozumi (his backstory oif loneliness and school bullying is a TearJerker)
** God, does Youko need a hug when you see her flashbacks in the first movie. Thank God Oda straightened up his act.
%%** Ichiro
