* DesignatedVillain: Sakiko’s father is a villain because Ryo needed a love interest.
%%* EvilIsCool
%%* SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome: Quite a few.
%%** Ryo crushing Sugawara's fist with his skull.
%%** Ryo after his fight with Black Monkey where you see him in one scene after he completed his ki training.
%%** Ryo defeating the Thai boxer.
* MoralEventHorizon: Ryo crosses this in Chapters 65 and 66 when he [[spoiler: rapes Moeni Funato, Sugawara's girlfriend]] for the purpose of trying to set up a match between them, and to make matters worse, he [[spoiler: calls Sugawara and makes him listen to her being raped]]. While prior fights were ''maybe'' examples of him being a victim of circumstance, Ryo outright plans on [[spoiler:flying to the island she was doing a photo shoot at for the expressed purpose of raping her]], making it entirely on him.
* NightmareFuel: Ryo tries to cremate [[spoiler: Rangah]] on a funeral pyre after the latter apparently dies from injuries. Turns out he wasn't quite so dead.
* TooBleakStoppedCaring: The series is unrelentingly bleak and gritty, with the number of characters who aren't psychopathic or otherwise mentally damaged being small enough to count on one hand.
* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic:
** Ryo is supposed to represent how far society can push an individual, but honestly, he is a nasty piece of work who comes off as being closer to a VillainProtagonist than a ByronicHero. Made especially apparent at his MoralEventHorizon, which was entirely his own decision.
** This is taken even further for after the introductions of Sakiko. She and Ryo are meant to be BirdsOfAFeather given she has a crippling fear of her father. Her father is shown to be a loving and caring man who was willing to spend every dime had when he thought that Ryo had kidnapped her. Unfortunately, the people he hired turned out to be psychopaths. Yet Sakiko has an unexplained fear that he will kill her, to the point that she stabs him.
*** Also, for all her talk about wanting freedom she just latched on to the first person who likes her art. Making her come across more like an EntitledBastard angry at her father for not understanding that TrueArtIsIncomprehensible
** Ryuichi Yamazaki is this too -- his FreudianExcuse for turning to crime is that an umpire at a ball game he was playing in at the age of 16 made a call he didn't like.
* TheWoobie: A very dark type in Ryo. He is almost every type of Woobie on the list. Including JerkAssWoobie, IronWoobie, WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds and StoicWoobie (not to say he is stoic in the least, however, he never ever complains about his life, he simply rages against it and just to complete the list, his manager and sister are {{Wheelchair Woobie}}s. Now, ''that's'' a lot of woobie.
