* AdaptationDisplacement: If you were born between 1996 and 2003, chances are good that you first learned of the story of Sagwa through the TV series. Not to say that the book has been completely forgotten, mind you...
* Adorkable: Certainly Fu-Fu and the Reader of the Rules, but Dongwa and the Foolish Magistrate also have cute dorky moments. Sagwa also has moments like this when she's very playful, such as the episode "The Tortoise And The Cat" where she's playing tag and hide and seek.
* AngstWhatAngst: A number of times, especially from Mama and Baba, who are not at all alarmed at how sad Sheegwa is to be away from her siblings when she is mistaken for a princess, nor do we see their reaction when we learn she is to be taken from home to fulfill her royal duties. In a much later episode, they don't even put their work down when Sagwa runs off to get Dongwa off her back, merely chastising his carelessness while Sagwa is very nearly taken away by a family who mistook her for a stray. Especially remarkable as they are horrified when the Magistrate once nearly gave away one of their kittens to an Italian dignitary.
* BaseBreakingCharacter:
** The Alley Cats. Despite a little some fans finding them bland due to their rude behavior, most consider them some of the funniest characters (alongside Dongwa) due to their hilariously over-the-top moments despite being jerks in most days.
** Most fans pick either Jet-Jet, Lik-Lik or Hun-Hun as the best alley cat.
** Tai-Tai and her Sleeve Dogs. Some people hate them, where as some like them (the former has more fans).
** The rat from "New Years Cleanup" and "The Return of the Rat". Some fans find him funny. Some find him mean-spirited.
* BrokenBase:
** "Princess Sheegwa". Most fans find it creative and fun to watch, while some fans find the 'plot twist' senseless.
** "Sagwa Rules". Most fans find it creative and relatable, where as some find Mama Miao to be out of character.
** "The Favorite". Some fans find it okay due to Dongwa not being grounded, whereas most felt that he got what he deserved earlier in the episode (that counts as him falling in the lake).
** "The Bees, The Birds and The Silkworms". Most people find it creative and funny. Some hate it due to Tai-Tai blaming her husband for 'her' actions. At least both of them are to blame since the Foolish Magistrate was forced into it.
** For the best episode, most people pick "Explorer's Club", "The Zodiac Zoo", "Sick Day", "The Cat and the Wind", "Spreading Rumors" or "Precious Gift".
** "Sagwa the Stray". Some people like it for the good plot, whereas some find it bland due to Lee-Wan being too dumb to notice Sagwa NOT wanting to be in the houseboat and to leave her family and Fu-Fu.
** "On the Run". Most people hate it due to being mean-spirited and overly bizarre, whereas a little some find it enjoyable.
** "Ba-Do and the Lantern Festival". Most people hate it for it's lack of a resolution to the plot, while those who like it find the ending to be a TearJerker.
* ContinuityLockout: This applies to the SequelEpisode, as fans who watch that episode before would get confused about Sagwa's connection with the Rat.
* CultClassic: The series has a small but dedicated fanbase.
* EnsembleDarkhorse:
** The Alley Cats (Lik-Lik, Wing-Wing, Hun-Hun and Jet-Jet often get this for their hilarious over-the-top moments despite being jerks), as well as the one shot characters (with the exception of the two villianous characters from "On the Run").
** Nai-Nai and Yeh-Yeh also tend to get this, especially the former.
* EsotericHappyEnding:
** "Tea for Two" ends with Dongwa and the sleeve dogs having made a monkey trainer and his monkeys hated by the entire province. But the sight of a tree supposedly means they'll be wanted at the palace again.
** In one episode, Sagwa befriends a group of cats whom she's envious of for their lavish lifestyle, only to find out they are constantly menaced by their cruel owner who treats them strictly as ornaments rather than true cats. Sagwa gives them the freedom to act like normal cats for an entire afternoon and helps renew their spirits; however, the episode still ends with the four of them returning to their owner where they are almost certain to resume the strict lifestyle forced upon them.
* HilariousInHindsight: This wouldn't be the last animation with a kind, old, and wise tortoise named Oogway.
* JerkassWoobie: Tai-Tai goes through this in "Wedding Day Mess".
** Dongwa also goes through this in "Time For Everything" and "My Fair Kitty"
* LGBTFanbase: Some fans headcanon Yeh-Yeh as a trans man.
* MemeticMutation: Depending on whose YouTube Poops you watch, you may have heard Sagwa saying "Don't forget your umbrella!", multiple times before.
* Moe:
** Sheegwa due to being very friendly and the kindest character of the series. Helps that she's the youngest of the Miao family and a kitten.
** Sagwa has her own moments of adorableness, mainly when she's very playful and upbeat. Especially since Creator/HollyGauthierFrankel puts as much energy into her performance as she can in certain episodes. Not to mention the cute meows she makes throughout the series (notably the episode "The Tortoise And The Cat" where she meows in pain after getting a thorn stuck in her paw).
* Narm: In one episode Sagwa neglects to write the rules needed for a boat race being held in the village due to problems with Baba, and the Magistrate refuses to carry on without them in hand. When urged to carry on he declares "No rules, no race!" Somehow, this one line prompts him to start a musical chant that prompts the boat riders to join in, with the entire village soon getting in on the fun.
* NightmareFuel:
** To some fans, the fact that Sagwa was almost (accidentally) taken away from her own family in "Sagwa the Stray". Doubles as TearJerker.
** Near the end of the episode "Sick Day", the story scene where Sagwa gets captured and has a scared reaction because of Sheegwa telling her that she didn't play with her. Throughout the episode, Sagwa is heard screaming in fear. There's something creepy about hearing your favorite character scream with fear, especially since they rarely show fear at all.
* PeripheryDemographic: While NostalgiaFilter has given it older audiences, it's also a show with a unique setting, good animation, score and writing, and well-written characters with good choices of voice actors.
* RetroactiveRecognition: Mung was voiced by Steven Crowder, who in the late 2010s and early 2020s would gain fame as a conservative political commentator.
* TheScrappy:
** The Cruel Magistrate and the Cat Catcher from "On the Run" due to their mean-spirited behavior and the fact the former doesn't want any cats in his village and the latter wanted to catch Sagwa and Fu-Fu with his net for the puppet show.
** A few fans consider the Sleeve Dogs to be this due to their troublesome behavior and a lack of character development they have, and consider them Alley Cat clones. At least they do have redeemable qualities, but not as much as The Alley Cats and Dongwa.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: Tung, Fam, Haiyo, Ping-Wing, the other two daughters, Tai-Tai's bird...there are quite a few. Somewhat justified as the show only ran for 40 episodes and the writers still had time to do more with the characters if they had made more episodes.
* ToyShip: Fans often ship Sagwa with either Jet-Jet or Fu-Fu and Dongwa with Hun-Hun.
* ValuesDissonance: In one episode, the Magistrate is expecting the delivery of a prized pigeon gifted to him by the Emperor, whom Fu Fu befriends when she escapes her cage. The Reader chastises the wagon driver for taking so long with the delivery, not stopping to acknowledge that the man is clearly mute and trying to use explain his troubles with his body language.
* TheWoobie:
** Since Sheegwa is the youngest character in the show aside from the baby panda that appeared once, who is the youngest character to ever appear in the show , it's logical that she is this quite a bit. The most notable examples are in "Princess Sheegwa", "Precious Gift", and "Sick Day".
** Haiyo (the bird that Dongwa befriends in one episode) would end up like this when the alley cats make fun of him.
** The cats from "Cats of a Different Class" have an owner who sees them as decorations instead of pets. He makes them wear painfully tight booties all the time because he thinks they look good and feeds them nothing but rice because he doesn't want their breath to smell bad.
** Baba Miao can be viewed as this, such as the episode where he comes to terms with aging.
*** He crosses into JerkassWoobie territory too. In "Time for Everything," he punishes Dongwa for being late to write his first solo rule by assigning him tons and tons of scrolls to write. At one point, Dongwa falls asleep on the job, and Sagwa, being unable to rouse him, finishes them for him. Later, Dongwa decides to ask Sagwa for help again. Sagwa accepts on the condition that Dongwa tell Baba how he feels about having to do so much work. The kittens wind up getting scolded by their father after he overhears (even going as far as accusing Sagwa of helping Dongwa deceive him). Later in the episode, Baba starts having a nightmare/flashback about his own youth, with his father pressuring him to write all hours of the day. The next morning, he apologizes to Dongwa and tells him that he was a little too hard on him.
