Context YMMV / RoverDangerfield

Go To

* AccidentalInnuendo: If you don't know what was being discussed beforehand, "I'll never do it on a Christmas tree" sounds like Rover is talking about how he will never have sex on one.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeArt: Even those that dislike the film admit that the animation looks really good at times.
* BestKnownForTheFanservice: The Vegas showgirls; suffice to say, it's quite jarring to see so much skin and such suggestive poses in what was rebranded as a family-friendly movie.
* CrossesTheLineTwice: The death of the turkey really shouldn't be as funny as it is.
* FanPreferredCutContent: Many fans wished that the movie would've been R-Rated like it originally was, not only due to the potential it has as a movie like that, but also due to how [[WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids certain scenes]] makes more sense when viewed in an R-Rated lens.
* NarmCharm: "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smAKMcg7QfQ I'll Never Do It On A Christmas Tree]]", which has arguably become the movie's SignatureScene. In the middle of a FishOutOfWater talking dog movie, the protagonist bursts into a random, super classy song about how he doesn't do his business on Christmas trees out of principle. As far as [[BigLippedAlligatorMoment Big Lipped Alligator Moments]] go, it's so stupid it's hilarious. At the same time, there's something surprisingly sweet about Rover being extra silly just to amuse Daisy, and Daisy rolling with said song with little more than an eyeroll. Not to mention, Rover really gets into his improvised little ditty with gusto.
* NightmareFuel: It has a few moments:
** Just the morning after [[spoiler: accidentally ruining Rocky's deal with the mafia]], Rover wakes up, for some reason, wearing black sunglasses, making him dizzy, having some problems with his sight and acting weird. It almost looks like he's having a hangover after a night of alcohol... or drugs. The whole scene is delivered in a creepy and unexpected way.
** The turkey's [[DiesWideOpen face]] when Rover [[spoiler: finds out that she's dead]].
* PopularWithFurries: Rover's a bit too Rodney Dangerfield-looking for most furries, but Daisy has her set of fans due to her cute design and personality.
* RetroactiveRecognition:
** One of the animators was Seth Kearsley, whose feature directorial debut would be [[WesternAnimation/EightCrazyNights another animated movie based on a famous comedian's schtick]].[[note]]Incidentally, [[Creator/AdamSandler that comedian]] was a huge Rodney fan. And Rodney was featured in [[Film/LittleNicky one of said comedian's films]].[[/note]]
** Another person who animated on this is Jeff Smith. Yes, [[ComicBook/{{BONE}} THAT Jeff Smith]].
** And Raffles is voiced by Ned Luke... aka '''[[VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoV Michael de Santa]]'''. That's one big leap.
** In the Latin American Spanish dub this was one of the earlier voice acting roles both Creator/VictorUgarte and the late Enrique Mederos did as Danny and Raffles respectively.
* SoOkayItsAverage: If you like puns and one-liners, at least.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: Can you imagine what this movie would have been if it remained the R-rated comedy it had originally been conceived as?
* UnintentionalUncannyValley: Rodney Dangerfield's FishEyes caricatured onto a cartoon dog might've looked funny as a still drawing, but in motion, he just looks disturbing, as if he's constantly stare into space. Rocky, meanwhile, is drawn with a sort of "hard edged" look, giving him a drastically different look from the other characters, and making him look like a ghoul.
* VindicatedByCable: It enjoyed a second life on Creator/CartoonNetwork and Creator/{{HBO}}, and is nowadays popular among parents who want to introduce their children to Creator/RodneyDangerfield.
* WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids: As you can see under "ExecutiveMeddling", this movie was originally intended for adults. Suddenly the scantily clad showgirls, the mob hitmen, the turkey's death and perhaps the Christmas tree song make a bit more sense.
