* AudienceAlienatingEra:
** His WCW run after unmasking. Firstly because it only happened because Wrestling/EricBischoff thought the MaskedLuchador thing was dumb, secondly because he was turned heel and put in a street punk heel PowerStable (yeah, people didn't like them much) and thirdly because people thought he made a pretty terrible heel. Damn near EVERYONE, including Rey himself, hated the move. Fortunately, he would have the last laugh by joining WWE, getting his mask back on by dropping the "Jr." from his name and staying face for his entire time with the company.
** Had another of what fans consider a dork age, lasting from about 2010 until 2015. It was around 2010 when his chronic knee problems really started to catch up to him, and while he was still a competent wrestler, he moved much more slowly than he once did. He no longer performed his signature West Coast Pop, trading it for a weak-looking frog splash, and began wrestling in a tank-top to presumably hide the muscle mass he'd lost. He started appearing less frequently until the second AudienceAlienatingEra ended in him being booed out of the building for two of the only times in his career, in an ill-fated Royal Rumble appearance in 2014 and a match with Bad News Barrett nearly three months later on Raw, his last matches with WWE for nearly four years. He recovered thanks to a well-received run on the independent scene and still-ongoing stem cell treatments in his knees, and by the time he returned to WWE in 2018 he was much more warmly-received.
* CatharsisFactor: Rey’s feud with his prodigal son had these.
** After Rey has refused to lay a hand on his son for months, he decides that enough is enough when Wrestling/Mysterio starts insulting Angie, Rey's wife and Dom's mom, and punches him flat onto his back before challenging him to a match at WrestleMania 39. Wrestling/MichaelCole's "Oh yeah!" when Rey lands the punch was on point.
** Speaking of their match, there was a lots of cathartic cheers when Rey got his belt to give Dom a proper spanking. What’s better is Rey won, celebrating with his wife and daughter while Dominik could do nothing but sulk.
** One year later, Dirty Dom decides he’s not done with Rey and heads over to Smackdown to mess with him further, joining Santos Escobar who also despises him. This leads to a tag match at WrestleMania XL where Escobar and Dominik fall to Rey and Andrade.
* FanNickname: Fans are fond of calling him "Rey-Rey". Many wrestlers are too.
* FanonDiscontinuity: His first World Heavyweight Championship run mainly due to that was the period where Wrestling/WWE was milking the late Wrestling/EddieGuerrero's name for all it was worth. Not to mention they dropped "heavyweight" from the title's name for the duration of Mysterio's reign, as if no one would notice. He second run with the title, despite being far shorter, is remembered far more fondly.
* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: Junior became a legend in Japan almost overnight.
* HarsherInHindsight: Rey Mysterio and Wrestling/Batista teamed together for many years on [=SmackDown=]. They were the two wrestlers at the center of the XPacHeat storm at the 2014 Royal Rumble.
* IronWoobie: "The Ultimate Underdog". Nobody ever had a harder road to the World Heavyweight Championship, but Rey hardly ever cracked on his way to victory.
* MemeticMutation: "I've had surgery on my knee five times..."
** Pray to Kneesus.
** The WWE'13 tweet.While promoting the newest WWE video game in 2012, Rey has released the tweet that reads "Finally got my copy of [=#WWE13=] can't wait to play it tonight on the bus & can't Waite to beat my kids as well! [=Enjoy619=]". Years later, Rey's son Wrestling/DominikMysterio has used it in a storyline against his father to paint him as an abusive parent.
* Misblamed: A type II example concerning the 2014 Royal Rumble. Rey Mysterio is one of the most popular, beloved Faces in the WWE today. Yet when he came out as number 30 in the Rumble, he proceeded to get nuclear heat from the crowd. Why? Because the fans wanted to see Wrestling/DanielBryan in the Rumble, and were pissed that he wasn't. So poor Rey had to take the brunt of their criticism, even though the fault was most definitely in the hands of the executives.
* NeverLiveItDown: While Perro Aguayo Jr's death in his tag team match with Manik against Rey and Xtreme Tiger was a freak accident and absolutely no one in the business blames him for it, the fact that Rey was the one who hit the move that ultimately led to Aguayo's death is something he'll sadly carry for the rest of his life.
* OlderThanTheyThink: According to a legend, he created the tiger feint kick (the 619) only after Ricky Marvin told him that Wrestling/DramaticDreamTeam's MIKAMI was using a tiger feint dropkick, which he still uses.
* ReplacementScrappy: The fans were upset that it was him who was the no. 30 entrant in the 2014 Royal Rumble and not Daniel Bryan. The sad part is, Rey is a fairly popular wrestler, but he just wasn't the person people wanted to see. Let's repeat that: Rey Mysterio got booed. That should give you an idea of how serious this is.
* ShockingMoments:
** Rey Mysterio winning the 2006 Royal Rumble at Number 2.
** Hoo boy, his first "I-Quit" match with Wrestling/Jr on SmackDown. And the biggest "holy shit" moment of the match was that Chavo actually won, by hanging Mysterio upside-down from the set and smashing his knee with a chair until Mysterio screamed the words.
** Only for a rather nasty case of HistoryRepeats to come into play later on with Mysterio hanging Chavo upside down on a turnbuckle and doing the exact same thing to Chavo. Unsurprisingly, Chavo quit that time.
** Come 2018, Mysterio hasn't been seen on WWE programming in 4 years, and was last seen doing work on Wrestling/LuchaUnderground, so people convinced his time with WWE was over. And then he comes out at the famed #27 spot at the Royal Rumble. Cue global scale mark out.
** Rey Mysterio being on the receiving end of his son Dominik's beatdown after the younger Mysterio's FaceHeelTurn at the 2022 Clash at the Castle.
* SignatureScene:
** Everything about Rey's appearance at the 2006 Royal Rumble: the entrance on Eddie Guerrero's cars as #2, him surviving to the final 2, and then eliminating Randy Orton (#30!) with a headscissors to a roaring crowd.
** Him and his son Dominik double-teaming against Wrestling/BrockLesnar at Survivor Series 2019 culminating with a Stereo 619.
** Punching his son after Dominik insulted his wife on the March 24, 2023 edition of [=SmackDown=].
** Him taking his belt off to punish his son in their [=WrestleMania=] match.
* SpecialEffectsFailure: His "eye injury" in his "eye for an eye" match against Wrestling/SethRollins at the 2020 Extreme Rules. The eye is blatantly fake and the lack of any blood whatsoever makes it impossible to take seriously. The way Rey awkwardly covered his face in an attempt to hide the fact that said injury was fake didn't help.
* TearJerker: Rey's storyline with Dominik, who pulled a FaceHeelTurn and joined Wrestling/TheJudgmentDay, is him trying to convince his son to step out of the dark and admitting his flaws as a parent. Throughout it all, he's doing his best not to lay a finger on his son and ultimately refuses to fight him...until Dominik decides to insult Angie - Rey's wife and Dominik's mother - which finally pushes Rey too far and he gives Dominik a well-deserved punch. He proceeds to yell at him for forcing his hand and especially for disrespecting his mother.
* TraumaCongaLine: After finally getting out of his contract after a year of being forced to do nothing, Rey makes his triumphant return to Mexico... and then in a horrific freak accident Perro Aguayo Jr. dies shortly after taking some moves from him.
* VindicatedByHistory: When WCW closed in 2001, the then [=WWF=] initially passed on Mysterio's contract because they had no interest in him. They changed their minds and hired him in 2002in addition to him wearing a mask again. Now he's a 3 time World Champion.
* TheWoobie: Rey has been betrayed by three Guerreros, , and most recently his own friend Santos Escobar. His own flesh and blood turning on him and joining a group of rotten heels takes the cake. He openly declared he hated Rey and physically attacked him. Rey refused to fight back no matter how much he deserved it, and in fact that’s why Dominik beat him. This feud would cause their family a ton of grief. Rey moved to Smackdown, but Dom refused to leave well enough alone. Eight days before WrestleMania 39, Rey finally knocked his son on his ass and accepted his challenge for the event.
* XPacHeat: Believe it or not.
** Never in the USA, but after he unmasked in WCW, he got some seriously negative reactions in Mexico. It looked even worse because he was at the time feuding with (surprise) Psicosis, who was a holdout against unmasking. As it turned out, the conclusion of the feud was supposed to be Psicosis winning Rey's mask, but since Misterio had already unmasked, CMLL's governing body refused to allow Misterio to wrestle masked. This forced a rebooking to a much less meaningful stipulation, and Misterio ended up winning, which didn't make the CMLL fans happy. Fortunately, WWE were able to get the mask back on through some LoopholeAbuse, and the Mexican Athletic Commission let it happen because they hated the unmasking as well. The WCW stunt became CanonDiscontinuity and the bad taste of it quietly faded.
** Also, as mentioned above in MisBlamed and ReplacementScrappy, Rey, got insane nuclear heat when he came out as the 30th Royal Rumble entrant instead of Daniel Bryan, who fans were expecting.
