* AdaptationDisplacement: More people are more familiar with the film adaptation than the original book.
* AngstAversion: One of the most infamous examples in film media. The scene in which [[ShootTheDog Travis has no other choice but to shoot his beloved dog]] (who contracted rabies from a rabid wolf) is just so ''excruciatingly'' heartbreaking for so many potential viewers that they shun the film for their own hearts' benefit.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: The theme songs for both [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uG-J7dYweU Old Yeller]] and [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfecSEuE9N0 its sequel]] are pretty fun and catchy.
* ItWasHisSled: Even people who haven't seen the film know that in the end, Old Yeller contracts rabies and Travis decides to [[MercyKill put him down]] personally.
* MisaimedMerchandising: Since 2005, Disney and Kroger have been selling Old Yeller Dog Food. The strangeness of marketing pet food as a tie-in to a movie infamous for ending with a dog being put out of his misery goes without saying.
* NightmareFuel: It can be pretty terrifying to see Old Yeller when he's infected with rabies.
** Worse still, when Arliss (who doesn't understand the danger) ''nearly lets Old Yeller out''.
** Arliss messing with a bear cub, leading to a literal MamaBear jumping out of nowhere and charging at the little boy. Had it not been for Old Yeller, Arliss would’ve been dead on the spot.
** Travis getting mauled by a herd of wild hogs is extremely unsettling. Again, if not for Old Yeller, Travis would have been a goner. Their bloody injuries are definitely not for the faint of heart.
** Old Yeller’s fight with the wolf is rather jarring, especially with their snarls. Travis is reluctant to shoot the wolf since Old Yeller is right in the middle and putting up a fight. When he does pull the trigger, both Old Yeller and the wolf fall down. One {{Beat}} later, Old Yeller walks up, wounded a lot, but seemly fine. Until Travis’s mother correctly deduces the wolf must be rabid, since no wolf in its right mind would never leap towards the fire and so close to people. And since Old Yeller’s been bitten…
* {{Sequelitis}}: Savage Sam (the movie at least) is not as well-regarded as Old Yeller.
* SignatureScene: Travis putting down Old Yeller. Context? See below.
* TearJerker:
** Travis shooting Old Yeller after he succumbs to rabies. Need we say more?!
** Earlier, Travis checked on his loyal dog, only to be met with a snarling and near foaming beast. He lied to his mother that Old Yeller is doing fine, but it doesn’t take long for the ruse to fall apart after Arliss almost releases Old Yeller. The way he falls apart is heartbreaking, knowing what’s about to come next. Travis tells his mother since Old Yeller is his dog, [[StakingTheLovedOne he should be the one to do it, but it still doesn’t stop him from crying.]] It’s a decision no dog owner should be put through.
** Even his mother is just as heartbroken as her eldest son, but knows there is no other option for them that to MercyKill Old Yeller.
-->'''Mama:''' There's no hope for him now, Travis. He's suffering. You know we've got to do it.
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: While the dog in ''Savage Sam'' is still decently lovable, there's a lot of unhappiness about how Sam has the appearance of his bluetick hound mother rather than his mastador father, despite what was previously depicted.
* ValuesDissonance: It can be very difficult for modern parents to stomach the idea of a mother letting her son be the one to kill his beloved pet, rather than doing it herself and sparing him the trauma. Sure, back then he would have been expected to "man up" and do it himself, but in the 21st century, few people would dream of even allowing their child to witness the euthanasia, let alone commit it.
